Guinea pig epidermis generates putative anti-inflammatory metabolites from fish oil polyunsaturated fatty acids

Bioactive metabolites of OMEGA-6 and OMEGA-3 fatty acids are associated with inflammatory cytokine concentrations in maternal and infant plasma at the time of delivery

BACKGROUND & AIMS

Inflammation is necessary for a healthy pregnancy. However, unregulated or excessive inflammation during pregnancy is associated with severe maternal and infant morbidities, such as pre-eclampsia, abnormal infant neurodevelopment, or preterm birth. Inflammation is regulated in part by the bioactive metabolites of omega-6 (n-6) and omega-3 (n-3) fatty acids (FAs). N-6 FAs have been shown to promote pro-inflammatory cytokine environments in adults, while n-3 FAs have been shown to contribute to the resolution of inflammation; however, how these metabolites affect maternal and infant inflammation is still uncertain. The objective of this study was to predict the influence of n-6 and n-3 FA metabolites on inflammatory biomarkers in maternal and umbilical cord plasma at the time of delivery.

METHODS

Inflammatory biomarkers (IL-1β, IL-2, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, and TNFα) for maternal and umbilical cord plasma samples in 39 maternal-infant dyads were analyzed via multi-analyte bead array. Metabolites of n-6 FAs (arachidonic acid and linoleic acid) and n-3 FAs (eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid) were assayed via liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Linear regression models assessed relationships between maternal and infant inflammatory markers and metabolite plasma concentrations.

RESULTS

Increased plasma concentrations of maternal n-6 metabolites were predictive of elevated pro-inflammatory cytokine concentrations in mothers; similarly, higher plasma concentrations of umbilical cord n-6 FA metabolites were predictive of elevated pro-inflammatory cytokine concentrations in infants. Higher plasma concentrations of maternal n-6 FA metabolites were also predictive of elevated pro-inflammatory cytokines in infants, suggesting that maternal n-6 FA status has an intergenerational impact on the inflammatory status of the infant. In contrast, maternal and cord plasma concentrations of n-3 FA metabolites had a mixed effect on inflammatory status in mothers and infants, which may be due to the inadequate maternal dietary intake of n-3 FAs in our study population.

CONCLUSIONS

Our results reveal that maternal FA status may have an intergenerational impact on the inflammatory status of the infant. Additional research is needed to identify how dietary interventions that modify maternal FA intake prior to or during pregnancy may impact maternal and infant inflammatory status and associated long-term health outcomes.

Changes in bioactive lipid mediators in response to short-term exposure to ambient air particulate matter: A targeted lipidomic analysis of oxylipin signaling pathways

BACKGROUND

Exposure to ambient air particulate matter (PM) is a risk factor for cardiometabolic diseases. The knowledge of the underlying mechanisms is still evolving, but systemic inflammation and oxidative stress are central to the ability of PM to induce cardiometabolic effects. Oxylipins derived from polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) are bioactive lipid mediators that have fundamental roles in the signaling of inflammatory events. However, the associations between oxylipins and short-term exposure to PM in humans are unknown.

METHODS

Using targeted lipidomic analyses, we measured 16 oxylipins derived from lipoxygenase (LOX), cytochrome P450 (CYP), and cyclooxygenase (COX) pathways and their parent PUFAs in serum samples of 110 adults enrolled in a panel study in Beijing, China. Each participant completed 2-7 clinical visits from 2013 to 2015. PM with aerodynamic diameter ≤ 2.5 μm (PM_2.5) and ≤ 0.1 μm (ultrafine particles, UFPs) were continuously monitored at a station. Linear mixed-effects models were applied to examine the associations between changes in lipid mediators and exposure to ambient PM during the preceding 1 to 3 days before the clinical visit.

RESULTS

Serum concentrations of PUFAs, including omega-6 arachidonic acid (ARA) and omega-3 eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), were significantly increased in association with interquartile range (IQR) increases in PM with different exposure windows (i.e., 1-3 days). Regarding oxylipins, significant PM-associated changes included increases in LOX-derived leukotriene B4 (LTB4), 12(S)-, 15(S)-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid (HETE), 12-hydroxyeicosapentaenoic acid (HEPE), and 17-hydroxydocosahexaenoic acid (HDHA); an increase in CYP-derived 5,6-dihydroxyeicosatrienoic acid (DHET); and a decrease in COX-derived prostaglandin E2.

CONCLUSIONS

Short-term exposure to PM was associated with PUFAs and oxylipins derived from LOX, CYP, and COX pathways in humans. Our findings provide mechanistic insight suggesting bioactive oxylipins might be used as biomarkers and have important implications as mediators of PM-associated systemic cardiometabolic effects.

Oxylipin Profiling of Alzheimer's Disease in Nondiabetic and Type 2 Diabetic Elderly

Oxygenated lipids, called “oxylipins,” serve a variety of important signaling roles within the cell. Oxylipins have been linked to inflammation and vascular function, and blood patterns have been shown to differ in type 2 diabetes (T2D). Because these factors (inflammation, vascular function, diabetes) are also associated with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) risk, we set out to characterize the serum oxylipin profile in elderly and AD subjects to understand if there are shared patterns between AD and T2D. We obtained serum from 126 well-characterized, overnight-fasted elderly individuals who underwent a stringent cognitive evaluation and were determined to be cognitively healthy or AD. Because the oxylipin profile may also be influenced by T2D, we assessed nondiabetic and T2D subjects separately. Within nondiabetic individuals, cognitively healthy subjects had higher levels of the nitrolipid 10-nitrooleate (16.8% higher) compared to AD subjects. AD subjects had higher levels of all four dihydroxyeicosatrienoic acid (DiHETrE) species: 14,15-DiHETrE (18% higher), 11,12 DiHETrE (18% higher), 8,9-DiHETrE (23% higher), and 5,6-DiHETrE (15% higher). Within T2D participants, we observed elevations in 14,15-dihydroxyeicosa-5,8,11-trienoic acid (14,15-DiHETE; 66% higher), 17,18-dihydroxyeicosa-5,8,11,14-tetraenoic acid (17,18-DiHETE; 29% higher) and 17-hydroxy-4,7,10,13,15,19-docosahexaenoic acid (17-HDoHE; 105% higher) and summed fatty acid diols (85% higher) in subjects with AD compared to cognitively healthy elderly, with no differences in the DiHETrE species between groups. Although these effects were no longer significant following stringent adjustment for multiple comparisons, the consistent effects on groups of molecules with similar physiological roles, as well as clear differences in the AD-related profiles within nondiabetic and T2D individuals, warrant further research into these molecules in the context of AD.

Synthesis and Identification of AceDoxyPC, a Protectin-Containing Structured Phospholipid, Using Liquid Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry

Fatty acids have many health benefits in a great variety of diseases ranging from cardiovascular to cerebral diseases. For instance, docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which is highly enriched in brain phospholipids, plays a major role in anti-inflammatory or neuroprotective pathways. Its effects are thought to be due, in part, to its conversion into derived mediators such as protectins. 1-Lyso,2-docosahexaenoyl-glycerophosphocholine (LysoPtdCho-DHA) is one of the physiological carrier of DHA to the brain. We previously synthesized a structured phosphatidylcholine to mimic 1-lyso,2-docosahexaenoyl-glycerophosphocholine, named AceDoPC® (1-acetyl,2-docosahexaenoyl-glycerophosphocholine), that is considered as a stabilized form of the physiological LysoPtdCho-DHA and that is neuroprotective in experimental ischemic stroke. Considering these, the current study aimed at enzymatically oxygenate DHA contained within AceDoPC® to synthesize a readily structured oxidized phospholipid containing protectin DX (PDX), thereafter named AceDoxyPC (1-acetyl,2-PDX-glycerophosphocholine). Identification of this product was performed using liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry. Such molecule could be used as a bioactive mediator for therapy against neurodegenerative diseases and stroke.

Advances in Our Understanding of Oxylipins Derived from Dietary PUFAs

Oxylipins formed from polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) are the main mediators of PUFA effects in the body. They are formed via cyclooxygenase, lipoxygenase, and cytochrome P450 pathways, resulting in the formation of prostaglandins, thromboxanes, mono-, di-, and tri-hydroxy fatty acids (FAs), epoxy FAs, lipoxins, eoxins, hepoxilins, resolvins, protectins (also called neuroprotectins in the brain), and maresins. In addition to the well-known eicosanoids derived from arachidonic acid, recent developments in lipidomic methodologies have raised awareness of and interest in the large number of oxylipins formed from other PUFAs, including those from the essential FAs and the longer-chain n-3 (ω-3) PUFAs. Oxylipins have essential roles in normal physiology and function, but can also have detrimental effects. Compared with the oxylipins derived from n-3 PUFAs, oxylipins from n-6 PUFAs generally have greater activity and more inflammatory, vasoconstrictory, and proliferative effects, although there are notable exceptions. Because PUFA composition does not necessarily reflect oxylipin composition, comprehensive analysis of the oxylipin profile is necessary to understand the overall physiologic effects of PUFAs mediated through their oxylipins. These analyses should include oxylipins derived from linoleic and α-linolenic acids, because these largely unexplored bioactive oxylipins constitute more than one-half of oxylipins present in tissues. Because collated information on oxylipins formed from different PUFAs is currently unavailable, this review provides a detailed compilation of the main oxylipins formed from PUFAs and describes their functions. Much remains to be elucidated in this emerging field, including the discovery of more oxylipins, and the understanding of the differing biological potencies, kinetics, and isomer-specific activities of these novel PUFA metabolites.

ω-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids-derived lipid metabolites on angiogenesis, inflammation and cancer

Epidemiological and pre-clinical studies support the anti-tumor effects of ω-3 PUFAs; however, the results from human trials are mixed, making it difficult to provide dietary guidelines or recommendations of ω-3 PUFAs for disease prevention or treatment. Understanding the molecular mechanisms by which ω-3 PUFAs inhibit cancer could lead to better nutritional paradigms and human trials to clarify their health effects. The ω-3 PUFAs exert their biological activities mainly through the formation of bioactive lipid metabolites. Here we discuss the biology of cyclooxygenase, lipoxygenase and cytochrome P450 enzymes-derived ω-3-series lipid metabolites on angiogenesis, inflammation and cancer.

2-Polyunsaturated acyl lysophosphatidylethanolamine attenuates inflammatory response in zymosan A-induced peritonitis in mice

In the present study, the anti-inflammatory action of lysophosphatidylethanolamine (lysoPtdEtn), orally administered, in zymosan A-induced peritonitis was examined. Oral administration of 2-DHA-lysoPtdEtn (ED(50), ~111 μg/kg) or 2-ARA-lysoPtdEtn (ED(50), 221 μg/kg) was found to inhibit the plasma leakage in mice treated with zymosan A. In support of this, 2-polyunsaturated acyl-lysoPtdEtn diminished the formation of LTC(4), a lipid mediator responsible for vascular permeability. Next, 2-DHA-lysoPtdEtn (ED(50), 110 μg/kg) or 2-ARA-lysoPtdEtn (ED(50), 123 μg/kg) effectively inhibited the leukocyte extravasation into the peritoneum. Consistent with this, each polyunsaturated-lysoPtdEtn diminished the formation of LTB(4) and 12-HETE, potent chemotactic factors. Additionally, the level of pro-inflammatory mediator (IL-1 β, IL-6, TNF-α or NO) was lowered remarkably in contrast to the augmentation of anti-inflammatory interleukin IL-10. Furthermore, 2-(15-HETE)-lysoPtdEtn and 2-(17-HDHE)-lysoPtdEtn, 15-lipoxygenation product of 2-ARA-lysoPtdEtn and 2-DHA-lysoPtdEtn, respectively, were more potent than corresponding lysoPtdEtn, suggesting the action of 2-acyl-lysoPtdEtn might be expressed through 15-lipoxygenation. In support of this, the formation of 15-HETE and LXA(4) was upgraded in accordance with an increasing dose of 2-ARA-lysoPtdEtn. Separately, anti-inflammatory actions, 2-polyunsaturated acyl-lysoPtdEtns also drastically diminished leukocyte infiltration in a later phase of zymosan A-induced peritonitis, indicating that these lipids also possess pro-resolving activity. Taken together, it is suggested that polyunsaturated lysoPtdEtns and their lipoxygenation derivatives, could be classified as potent anti-inflammatory lipids.

Systematic review of herbals as potential anti-inflammatory agents: Recent advances, current clinical status and future perspectives

Many synthetic drugs reported to be used for the treatment of inflammatory disorders are of least interest now a days due to their potential side effects and serious adverse effects and as they are found to be highly unsafe for human assistance. Since the last few decades, herbal drugs have regained their popularity in treatment against several human ailments. Herbals containing anti-inflammatory activity (AIA) are topics of immense interest due to the absence of several problems in them, which are associated with synthetic preparations. The primary objective of this review is to provide a deep overview of the recently explored anti-inflammatory agents belonging to various classes of phytoconstituents like alkaloids, glycosides, terpenoids, steroids, polyphenolic compounds, and also the compounds isolated from plants of marine origin, algae and fungi. Also, it enlists a distended view on potential interactions between herbals and synthetic preparations, related adverse effects and clinical trials done on herbals for exploring their AIA. The basic aim of this review is to give updated knowledge regarding plants which will be valuable for the scientists working in the field of anti-inflammatory natural chemistry.

Mechanisms for anti-inflammatory effects of 1-[15(S)-hydroxyeicosapentaenoyl] lysophosphatidylcholine, administered intraperitoneally, in zymosan A-induced peritonitis

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE

Lysophosphatidylcholines (lysoPCs) with polyunsaturated acyl chains are known to exert anti-inflammatory actions. 15-Lipoxygeanation is crucial for anti-inflammatory action of polyunsaturated acylated lysoPCs. Here, the anti-inflammatory actions of 1-(15-hydroxyeicosapentaenoyl)-lysoPC (15-HEPE-lysoPC) and its derivatives were examined in a mechanistic analysis.

EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH

Anti-inflammatory actions of 15-HEPE-lysoPC in zymosan A-induced peritonitis of mice were examined by measuring plasma leakage and leucocyte infiltration, and determining levels of lipid mediators or cytokines.

KEY RESULTS

When each lysoPC, administered i.v., was assessed for its ability to suppress zymosan A-induced plasma leakage, 15-HEPE-lysoPC was found to be more potent than 1-(15-hydroperoxyeicosapentaenoyl)-lysoPC or 1-eicosapentaenoyl-lysoPC. Separately, i.p. administration of 15-HEPE-lysoPC markedly inhibited plasma leakage, in contrast to 15-HEPE, which had only a small effect. 15-HEPE-lysoPC also decreased leucocyte infiltration. Moreover, it reduced the formation of LTC₄ and LTB₄, 5-lipoxygenation products, as well as the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines. The time-course study indicated that 15-HEPE-lysoPC might participate in both the early inflammatory phase and resolution phase. Additionally, 15-HEPE-lysoPC administration caused a partial suppression of LTC₄-induced plasma leakage and LTB₄-induced leucocyte infiltration. In the metabolism study, peritoneal exudate was shown to contain lysoPC-hydrolysing activity, crucial for anti-inflammatory activity, and a system capable of generating lipoxin A from 15-hydroxy eicosanoid precursor.

CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS

15-HEPE-lysoPC, a precursor for 15-HEPE in target cells, induced anti-inflammatory actions by inhibiting the formation of pro-inflammatory leukotrienes and cytokines, and by enhancing the formation of lipoxin A. 15-HEPE-lysoPC might be one of many potent anti-inflammatory lipids in vivo.

Poxytrins, a class of oxygenated products from polyunsaturated fatty acids, potently inhibit blood platelet aggregation

Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), an important component of marine lipids, exhibits anti-inflammatory activity related to some of its oxygenated metabolites, such as neuroprotectin/protectin D1 [NPD1/PD1; 10(R),17(S)-dihydroxy-docosa-4Z,7Z, 11E,13E,15Z,19Z-hexaenoic acid] produced through the 15-lipoxygenase pathway. However, other metabolites from DHA can be produced through this pathway, and other polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) of nutritional value may be oxygenated as well. Their biological activities remain unknown. Isomers of protectin D1 were synthesized using soybean lipoxygenase and tested for their ability to inhibit human blood platelet aggregation. A geometric isomer called PDX, previously described with the 11E,13Z,15E geometry, instead of 11E,13E,15Z in PD1, inhibited platelet aggregation at submicromolar concentrations when induced by either collagen, arachidonic acid, or thromboxane. The inhibition occurred at the level of both the cyclooxygenase activity and thromboxane receptor site. Interestingly, all the metabolites tested exhibiting the E,Z,E-conjugated triene were active, whereas E,E,Z trienes (as in PD1) or all-trans (E,E,E) trienes were inactive. We conclude that PDX and other oxygenated products from PUFAs of nutritional interest, having the E,Z,E-conjugated triene motif and collectively named poxytrins (PUFA oxygenated trienes), might have antithrombotic potential.

Differential expression of fatty acid transport proteins in epidermis and skin appendages

Epidermis and sebocyte-derived lipids are derived both from de novo synthesis and through uptake of fatty acids from the circulation. Plasma membrane proteins can significantly contribute to the latter process. In particular, fatty acid transport proteins (FATP/solute carrier family 27) are integral transmembrane proteins that enhance the uptake of long-chain fatty acids into cells. Using specific antisera against all six mammalian FATP, we found that both human and mouse skin express FATP1, -3, -4, and -6. In adult skin, FATP1 and -3 are expressed predominantly by keratinocytes, whereas FATP4 is strongly expressed by sebaceous glands and FATP6 by hair follicle epithelia. Sustained barrier disruption leads to increases in FATP1 and -6 levels as well as a robust increase in CD36 protein. Notably, expression of FATP1 by embryonic keratinocytes at day 18.5 was lower, and FATP4 increased in comparison with adult epidermis. Together, these findings indicate that FATP are not only expressed by different cell types within the skin, but also that their localization is dynamically regulated during development.

Dietary CLA and DHA modify skin properties in mice

This study investigated the influence of PUFA on the properties of mouse skin. Mice (3 wk old) were given free access to oils high in linoleic acid, CLA, or DHA for 4 wk. At the end of the experiment, their skins were compared by both biochemical and histological methods. No significant differences in lipid and collagen contents were detected among treatments, although the FA composition in the skin was altered depending upon the FA composition of the supplemented oils. Electron microscopy revealed that the subcutaneous tissue layers in the CLA and DHA groups were significantly thinner than that in the high linoleic acid group, whereas no differences in the thickness of dermis layers were observed among the three groups. These results suggest that skin properties in mice are readily modified by dietary FA sources within 4 wk of dietary oil supplementation.

Local application of n-3 or n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids in the treatment of human experimental gingivitis

BACKGROUND

Polyunsaturated fatty acids have the potential to attenuate inflammation by the synthesis of mediators of the 15-lipoxygenase pathways, which show opposite effects to the pro-inflammatory arachidonic acid metabolites such as leukotriene B4 (LTB4).

AIMS

The aim of this clinical study was to evaluate the effects of topical application of n-6 or n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids in patients with experimental gingivitis.

METHODS

In each subject, similar teeth served as experimental and control over a 21-day non-hygiene phase and a 9-day resolving phase. Efficacy assessment was based on the bleeding on probing frequency (BOP) and the gingivocrevicular fluid volume (GCF). GCF was determined by inserting a filter paper strip for 30 s and measurements were performed on a Periotron 8000. The LTB4 concentration was analyzed by reversed-phase high-pressure liquid chromatography.

RESULTS

After 21 days of plaque growth, the BOP, GCF and LTB4 levels were significantly increased in all groups, with no differences between the control and experimental side. Rinsing of an area with established gingivitis for a 9-day period significantly reduced the GCF in the n-6 group (71.9 (18.7) versus 47.4 (11.4) Periotron Units, median (inter quartile range)).

CONCLUSION

The topical application of n-6 or n-6 fatty acids failed to inhibit the development of experimental gingivitis. Rinsing with n-6 fatty acids could reduce the level of GCF in established experimental gingivitis.

The significance of polyunsaturated fatty acids in cutaneous biology

The skin epidermis displays a highly active metabolism of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). Dietary deficiency of linoleic acid (LA) and 18-carbon (n-6) PUFA results in characteristic scaly skin disorder and excessive epidermal water loss. Arachidonic acid, a 20-carbon (n-6) PUFA is metabolized via the cyclooxygenase pathway into predominantly prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) PGF2 alpha, and PGD2 and via the lipoxygenase pathway into predominantly 15-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid (15-HETE). The prostaglandins modulate normal skin physiological processes at low concentrations and inflammatory reactions at high concentrations. Similarly, the very active epidermal 15-lipoxygenase transforms dihomogammalinolenic acid (DGLA) into 15-hydroxy eicosatrienoic acid (15-HETrE), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) into 15-hydroxyeicosapentaenoic acid (15-HEPE) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) into 17-hydroxydocosahexaenoic acid (17-HDoHE), respectively. These monohydroxy acids exhibit anti-inflammatory properties. In contrast, the 18-carbon (n-6) PUFA is transformed into 13-hydroxy-9,11-octadecadienoic acid (13-HODE), which exerts antiproliferative properties in the tissue. Thus, the supplementation of diets with appropriate purified vegetable oils and/or fish oil may generate local cutaneous anti-inflammatory metabolites which could serve as a less toxic in vivo monotherapy or as adjuncts to standard therapeutic regimens for the management of skin inflammatory disorders.

Anti-inflammatory effects of eicosapentaenoic acid on experimental skin inflammation models

Anti-inflammatory effects of eicosapentaenoic (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acids (DHA) were examined on three models of skin inflammation induced in mice by topical application of an arachidonic acid (AA) solution, ultraviolet-B (UVB) irradiation, and contact sensitization with dinitrofluorobenzene. Ear oedema reactions induced by AA and UVB irradiation were significantly suppressed in mice fed a daily dose of 300 mg/kg EPA for 2 weeks. The contact hypersensitivity reaction was not impaired by EPA. None of the skin reactions was significantly inhibited in mice fed DHA or safflower oil. The results suggest that EPA, but not DHA, has anti-inflammatory effects on AA- and UVB-induced acute inflammation reactions.

Effect of dietary supplementation with very-long-chain n-3 fatty acids in patients with psoriasis

BACKGROUND

In several studies dietary fish oil has been found to have beneficial effect on psoriasis, but the results are contradictory and based mainly on open studies or studies of small numbers of patients.

METHODS

In a four-month double-blind, multicenter trial, we randomly assigned 145 patients with moderate-to-severe psoriasis to receive in their diet either highly purified ethyl esters of n-3 fatty acids ("fish oil"; 6 g of oil per day, containing 5 g of eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acid) or an isoenergetic amount of corn oil containing mainly n-6 fatty acids. All the patients were advised to reduce their intake of saturated fatty acids. A 48-hour dietary recall was performed, and the fatty-acid pattern in the serum phospholipids was monitored in a subgroup of patients.

RESULTS

In the fish-oil group, n-3 fatty acids were increased in serum phospholipids (P < 0.001), the ratio of arachidonic acid to eicosapentaenoic acid decreased (P < 0.001), and the level of n-6 fatty acids decreased (P < 0.001). In the corn-oil group, only docosahexaenoic acid increased significantly (P < 0.05). The ratio of polyunsaturated to saturated fatty acids increased in both groups. Plasma concentrations of triacylglycerol decreased from base line in the fish-oil group (P < 0.05). The score on the Psoriasis Area and Severity Index, as evaluated by the physicians, did not change significantly during the trial in either group. This was also true of a total subjective score reported by the patients, but a selected area of skin in the corn-oil group showed a significant reduction in the clinical signs (P < 0.05). Scaling was reduced from base line in both groups (P < 0.01). The fish-oil group had less cellular infiltration (P < 0.01), and the corn-oil group had improvement in desquamation and redness (P < 0.05). There was no significant difference in clinical manifestations between the groups. Among the patients in the fish-oil group, an increase in the concentration of n-3 fatty acids in serum phospholipids was not accompanied by clinical improvement, whereas in the corn-oil group there was a significant correlation between clinical improvement and an increase in eicosapentaenoic acid and total n-3 fatty acids.

CONCLUSIONS

Dietary supplementation with very-long-chain n-3 fatty acids was no better than corn-oil supplementation in treating psoriasis. Clinical improvement was not correlated with an increase in the concentration of n-3 fatty acids in serum phospholipids among the patients in the fish-oil group, whereas there was a significant correlation between clinical improvement and an increase in eicosapentaenoic acid and total n-3 fatty acids in the corn-oil group.
