Indian Fathers: Family Dynamics and Investment Patterns

Despite unprecedented economic and social changes within the Indian family, not much attention is paid to the role of the father in the socialisation of young children. This overview provides a contemporary look at the Indian father in the context of ideological beliefs about roles and responsibilities, levels and quality of involvement with infants and young children, and maternal employment and caregiving patterns. Ideological beliefs about men’s and women’s roles and responsibilities within the family have not changed appreciably. Fathers appear responsive to the needs of young children, but mothers still assume major responsibility for childrearing. Maternal employment affects caregiving patterns modestly. There is a need for studies on fathers’ involvement and investment in infants and young children within changing work and family patterns using more complex research designs.

Child-care and feeding practices of urban middle class working and non-working Indonesian mothers: a qualitative study of the socio-economic and cultural environment

The double-burden problem of malnutrition in many developing countries is occurring against a backdrop of complex changes in the socio-economic and cultural environment. One such change is the increasing rate of female employment, a change that has attracted researchers to explore the possible relationships between maternal employment and child nutritional status. The present study employs a qualitative approach to explore the socio-economic and cultural environments that may influence child-care practices in families of working and non-working mothers with children of different nutritional status and types of domestic caregiver. It was conducted in Depok, a satellite city of Jakarta, Indonesia, and was designed as a case study involving 26 middle class families. The children were categorized as underweight, normal weight and obese, and caregivers were grouped as family and domestic paid caregivers. Twenty-six mothers and 18 caregivers were interviewed. Data were analysed by the constant comparative approach. The study identified five emerging themes, consisting of reason for working and not working, support for mother and caregivers, decision maker on child food, maternal self-confidence and access to resources. It confirmed that mothers and caregivers need support and adequate resources to perform child-care practices regardless of the child nutritional and maternal working status. Further research is required into how Indonesian mothers across a range of socio-economic strata can have increased options for quality child-care arrangements and support with child feeding. Additionally, this paper discussed the importance of enhanced dissemination of health information addressing both child underweight and obesity problems.

Availability of childcare support and nutritional status of children of non-working and working mothers in urban Nepal

In many developing countries, poor women have multiple roles, and often their time constraints are so severe that their participation in income-generating activities results in reduced childcare time, which in turn affects child health. Previous studies have tended to investigate how childcare support influences nutrition of children with working mothers' based on comparisons with non-working mothers. However, non-working mothers are not a homogeneous group, and we therefore need to distinguish between those who need not work and those who wish to but cannot, for example, due to a lack of substitute caregivers. We examined the association between availability of childcare support and the nutritional status of children of both non-working and working mothers in poor areas of Pokhara, a sub-metropolitan city in Nepal. We recruited 150 children of age 10-24 months from the waiting lists of 17 daycare centers and measured their weights and heights. Those with height-for-age and weight-for-age Z scores of less than -2 were defined as stunted and underweight, respectively. To collect information on childcare practices and socioeconomic characteristics, mothers were interviewed using a pre-tested structured questionnaire. Unavailability of adult childcare support was associated with increased risk of malnutrition among children of both non-working and working mothers. Peer childcare was not significantly associated with child malnutrition among children of non-working mothers, but it was associated with an increased risk of malnutrition among children of working mothers. Although further longitudinal research is required, we suggest that childcare support from adult substitute caregivers is essential for children of non-working mothers with limited resources.
