Abstract
Little is known about Se intakes and status in very young New Zealand children. However, Se intakes below recommendations and lower Se status compared with international studies have been reported in New Zealand (particularly South Island) adults. The Baby-Led Introduction to SolidS (BLISS) randomised controlled trial compared a modified version of baby-led weaning (infants feed themselves rather than being spoon-fed), with traditional spoon-feeding (Control). Weighed 3-d diet records were collected and plasma Se concentration measured using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). In total, 101 (BLISS n 50, Control n 51) 12-month-old toddlers provided complete data. The OR of Se intakes below the estimated average requirement (EAR) was no different between BLISS and Control (OR: 0·89; 95 % CI 0·39, 2·03), and there was no difference in mean plasma Se concentration between groups (0·04 μmol/l; 95 % CI -0·03, 0·11). In an adjusted model, consuming breast milk was associated with lower plasma Se concentrations (-0·12 μmol/l; 95 % CI -0·19, -0·04). Of the food groups other than infant milk (breast milk or infant formula), 'breads and cereals' contributed the most to Se intakes (12 % of intake). In conclusion, Se intakes and plasma Se concentrations of 12-month-old New Zealand toddlers were no different between those who had followed a baby-led approach to complementary feeding and those who followed traditional spoon-feeding. However, more than half of toddlers had Se intakes below the EAR.

Abstract
There is an increasing evidence linking protective effect of selenium (Se) against Pb toxicology; however, Pb exposure risk assessments usually consider only the environmental Pb contamination and dietary intake. Based on the current understanding of mechanisms of SePb interactions, the physiological function/toxicology of Se and the toxicology of Pb, a new criterion for Se and Pb exposure assessment is developed. Additionally, seven existing criteria were also used to assess the resident health risks around a smelter in China. The Pb concentrations in locally-produced foods exceeded the national tolerance limits of China and the Se in the foods were similar to those in areas with adequate Se levels. In accordance with the illustrated assessments of the new criterion and seven existing criteria, we found a large knowledge gap between the new and traditional assessments of exposure to Pb and/or Se. The new assessment criteria suggested that almost all the residents were facing the Se deficiency and 58% of the residents not only had the adverse health of Se deficiency, but also had the health risks of Pb toxicity. The Pb and Se in the hair and urine may partly support the new criterion. This study suggested that the process of Se counteracting the Pb toxicity may result in Se deficiency. Pb exposure combined Se intake should be considered in future assessments of Pb exposure (or Se intake).

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to evaluate serum selenium levels in children receiving olive oil-based ketogenic diet (KD) for intractable seizures for at least 1 year. Out of 320 patients who were initiated on KD, patients who continued receiving KD for at least 12 months were enrolled. Sixteen patients who had selenium deficiency at the time of starting KD were excluded. Finally, a total of 110 patients (mean age 7.3 ± 4.2 years) were included. Serum selenium levels were measured at baseline and at 3, 6, and 12 months after treatment initiation by using atomic absorption spectroscopy. Selenium deficiency was defined as a serum selenium level <48 μg/L at each visit. Repeated measure ANOVA with post hoc Bonferroni correction was used for data analysis. Mean duration of KD was 15.3 ± 4.3 months. Mean serum selenium levels were significantly lower at 6 and 12 months of KD treatment (66.2 ± 23.3 and 57.2 ± 16.2 μg/L, respectively) compared to pre-treatment levels (79.3 ± 25.7 μg/L) (p = 0.001). On the other hand, selenium levels did not show any significant difference at 3 months of KD treatment (70.0 ± 21.2 μg/L) compared to baseline levels (p = 0.076). A total of 54 patients (49.1%) were diagnosed with selenium deficiency, and oral selenium medication was initiated for these patients. No relevant clinical findings were detected, and echocardiographic findings were normal in all patients. The decline of the serum selenium concentrations after 6 and 12 months of ketogenic diet suggests that patients on this highly prescriptive dietary treatment need close monitoring of this trace element.

Abstract
Ninety-six untreated patients with malignant lymphoma (ML), 81 Hodgkin's disease, and 15 Burkitt's lymphoma were studied for zinc (Zn) status, and 21 patients also had selenium (Se) status analysis. Plasma and hair Zn and Se levels were measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Chronic Zn and Se deficiencies (low plasma and low hair Zn and Se levels together) were found to be associated with ML in Turkish children. This was most likely due to the poor "nutritional environment" of the patients because majority of the ML patients were from families of low socioeconomic status. Supplementation of pediatric ML patients with Zn and Se, in addition to standard chemotherapy and radiotherapy regimen, is recommended.

Abstract
Starting from the fetal life and increasing the need throughout the childhood, adequate intake of micronutrients is of great importance for the proper development of structure and function of the body, and the well being. However, micronutrient deficiency is widespread in many populations of the world mainly due to nutritional insufficiencies and/or inadequate and unbalanced nutrition. While iodine and selenium (Se) are inadequately available for men and live stock in many parts of the world, Turkey is one of those countries where iodine deficiency (ID) is widespread, Se levels are marginal. In this communication, importance of adequate iodine and Se nutrition and status of Turkish children is summarized.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study sought to determine and evaluate the intakes and plasma concentrations of vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol), gamma-tocopherol, vitamin C, selenium, and carotenoids (alpha-carotene, beta-carotene, beta-cryptoxanthin, lutein/zeaxanthin, and lycopene) of nonsupplemented boys and girls, 4 to 8 years old, of Latino immigrants living in rural Nebraska. DESIGN Dietary intakes of the Latino children were estimated. Their plasma samples (fasting) were analyzed for vitamin E, vitamin C, selenium, and carotenoid concentrations. Data were evaluated by sex. SUBJECTS The subjects were a convenience sample of 4- to 8-year-old (n=29), apparently healthy, nonsupplemented children of Latino immigrants living in rural Nebraska. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS Sex differences in parameter values were determined using general linear models; Pearson r was used for determining correlations. RESULTS No significant differences in parameter values were observed by sex, with the exception of plasma lutein/zeaxanthin concentration. The majority (69%) had plasma vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol) concentrations<0.516 mg/dL (12 micromol/L), which is indicative of vitamin E inadequacy, and over half (59%) reported consuming less than the Estimated Average Requirement for vitamin E. All subjects had plasma vitamin C and selenium concentrations indicative of adequacy (>0.41 mg/dL or >23 micromol/L, and >6.32 microg/dL or >0.8 micromol/L, respectively), and consumed at least the Recommended Dietary Allowances for these nutrients. The plasma carotenoid concentrations of the children may be useful as norms. CONCLUSIONS These children of Latino immigrants who did not take supplements had low plasma vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol) concentrations but normal plasma vitamin C and selenium concentrations. IMPLICATIONS Dietetics professionals and others involved in health care need to work with Latino immigrant parents so that their children consume adequate amounts of vitamin E.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Oxidative stress is an important risk factor for the development and progression of several complications in hemodialysis patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of two different dialysis membranes on oxidative stress and selenium status. METHODS Forty long-term dialysis patients and 20 age-matched healthy controls were enrolled into our study. Serum malondialdehyde (MDA) and selenium (Se) concentrations, and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activities were determined before and after hemodialysis (HD) using a hemophan (H) or a polysulfone (PS) membrane. RESULTS MDA levels in the HD patients were significantly higher than those in the control group (p < 0.001). GSH-Px activity and selenium concentrations were significantly lower in HD patients compared to the control group (p < 0.001). MDA levels were significantly increased (p < 0.05); GSH-Px activity and selenium concentrations were significantly reduced (p < 0.001) in the PS membrane group compared to H membrane group after HD. CONCLUSIONS Comparing with H membrane, PS membrane caused more oxidative stress and lower levels of Se in HD patients.

Abstract
Iron and selenium are trace elements necessary for the maintenance of life and health. Iron deficiency is the most common nutritional deficiency among children in the world. The purpose of this study was to evaluate plasma selenium concentrations in children with iron deficiency anemia (IDA). Plasma selenium levels were investigated in 56 children with IDA and in 48 control subjects aged 1-8 years. A spectrofluorometric method was used for the determination. Plasma selenium concentrations in children with IDA (33.6+/-8.2 microg/l) were significantly lower than in the control group (56.0+/-17.0 microg/l) (p<0.001). However, there was no relation between plasma selenium, iron and hemoglobin concentrations.

Abstract
Graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry, after improved matrix modification and using Zeeman background correction, was used to measure the serum selenium content of healthy adults living in the Antwerp region (Belgium). The mean serum concentration of 13 men and 13 women, sampled once a month during 1 year, was 84.3 +/- 9.4ng/ml with a broad range of 51.4-121.7 ng/ml. The intra-individual variation was remarkably high. Recent literature on selenium concentrations is reviewed and values are tabulated, with limitation to healthy adults and European countries. The mean serum selenium concentration measured corresponded well to older literature data for Belgium. The obtained values were found to be in the medium range compared with the literature data for other European countries.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Assessment of selenium status to provide normative reference values, and investigation of associated socio-demographic factors, in a national sample of British young people aged 4-18 y. SETTING National Diet and Nutrition Survey-a nationwide cross-sectional sample of young people aged 4-18 y living in mainland Britain in 1997. METHODS Selenium status was measured, mainly in fasting blood samples, by plasma selenium concentration in 1127 participants, by red blood cell (RBC) selenium concentration in 1112, and by whole-blood glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activity in 658. RESULTS No evidence of severe selenium deficiency or toxicity was observed. Plasma selenium concentration was directly correlated with RBC selenium concentration, and both were associated directly, although less strongly, with GPx activity. Plasma and RBC selenium concentrations increased significantly with age, with RBC concentrations significantly higher in older girls than boys. Region of domicile exhibited a significant relationship. Associations also occurred with parental occupational social class, selenium concentrations being higher in more socially advantaged children. Black and Indian children had considerably higher concentrations than Caucasian children. Concentrations, especially of plasma selenium, were significantly lower in children either (or both) of whose parents were smokers, although, unexpectedly, there was no evidence that children who themselves smoked had lower levels. CONCLUSIONS The observed associations between selenium status indices and age, gender, social class, parental smoking and ethnic group indicate a complex network of biological factors which determine selenium concentrations in blood components, and which thus need to be controlled for when using these indices to assess selenium status in young people. Abstract
The concentration of serum selenium in 395 individuals (187 males + 218 females) living in the Canary Islands, Spain was determined by hydride generation atomic absorption spectrometry. The mean selenium concentration was 74.7 +/- 25.2 microg/l ranging between 7.86 and 182.3 microg/l. Twenty-two adults (7.2% of the total) had serum selenium concentrations under 45 microg/l. It is widely accepted that below this selenium serum concentration (45 microg/l) there is an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer. Our results fall within data recently published in other Spanish and European regions and are much lower than data observed in USA or seleniferous regions. The estimated Se intakes of our population were lower than the Recommended Dietary Allowances for American people. Individuals from Lanzarote had a mean Se concentration significantly higher than individuals from the other islands. This could be attributed to differences in Se content of soil and/or differences in dietary habits of the populations. Serum selenium concentration did not vary with the sex of the subjects. Individuals younger than 14 years old had a serum selenium concentration significantly lower than the rest of the individuals. No relationship with socio-economic status, educational level, smoking habits, physical exercise or beer consumption was found. However, individuals who consume wine more than three times a week showed higher selenium concentrations than individuals with lower consumption. Also, individuals with consumption above seven units of spirit drinks a week had the highest mean selenium concentration.

Abstract
The real significance of the level of trace elements copper, zinc and selenium in erythrocytes is still a matter of debate. This review is an evaluation of the potential value of copper, zinc and selenium in red blood cells in physiology, nutrition and pathology, taking into account the other commonly used indices and the analytical difficulty encountered for erythrocyte determinations. The main analytical methods and reference values in erythrocytes are also presented. The literature of the last 3 decades was analyzed. On the basis of these papers, the role of erythrocyte copper in various pathologies should be re-investigated, especially when they include inflammatory processes or hormonal changes. The main interest of zinc determination in red blood cells concerns thyroid pathology. In general, the value of selenium in erythrocytes agrees with selenium in serum and its determination is often unnecessary.

Abstract
Although endemic goiter has been shown to have a high prevalence in Turkey, little is known about the concentration of urinary iodine, plasma selenium (Se), copper (Cu), and zinc (Zn) in these patients. We studied on 140 male patient with endemic goiter (mean age: 22.2 +/- 0.19 yr) and 140 healthy male subjects (mean age: 21.8 +/- 0.28 yr). Daily urinary iodine excretion was determined by the ionometric method. Plasma Se, Zn, and Cu were determined by using atomic absorption spectrometry. Daily urinary iodine excretion was found to be significantly lower in the patient group (38.7 +/- 2.26 microg/d) than that of controls (50.73 +/- 2.56 microg/day, p = 0.001). Plasma Zn concentrations were also found to be significantly lower in the patient group (1.04 +/- 0.03 microg/mL) than that of controls (1.16 +/- 0.02 microg/mL, p = 0.001). No significant difference was determined in Se and Cu concentrations between the patient and control groups. Our study shows that a moderate iodine deficiency exists in both patients with endemic goiter and control subjects, which indicates the important role of iodine deficiency in the etiopathogenesis of endemic goiter in Turkey. Zinc deficiency may also contribute to the pathogenesis of endemic goiter. However, Se and Cu do not seem to have any role in the etiopathogenesis of endemic goiter in Turkey. A community-based iodine fortification program throughout the country may be proposed to take over the problem, which also can prevent the contributing effects of other element deficiencies that occur when iodine deficiency is the prevailing factor.
