Abstract
Multiple epidemiologic studies have revealed that gender is considered one of the important factors in the frequency and severity of certain infectious diseases, in which estrogens may play a vital role. There is growing evidence that estrogens as female sex hormone can modulate multiple biological functions outside of the reproductive system, such as in brain and cardiovascular system. However, it is largely unknown about the roles and mechanisms of estrogens/estrogen receptors in immune health and infection disease. Thence, by reading a lot of literature, we summarized the regulatory mechanisms of estrogens/estrogen receptors in immune cells and their roles in certain infectious diseases with gender differences. Therefore, estrogens may have therapeutic potentials to prevent and treat these infectious diseases, which needs further clinical investigation.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of partial replacement of dietary flour meal with seaweed polysaccharides on survival rate, histology, intestinal oxidative stress levels, and expression of immune-related genes in hybrid snakeheads under acute ammonia stress. Four experimental diets were set: (C) basal diet with 0% of seaweed polysaccharides as the control group, (MR) basal diet with 10% of seaweed polysaccharides, (HR) basal diet with 15% of seaweed polysaccharides, (HF) basal diet with 10% of fish oil. After 60 days of feeding, fish fed with the diet of C group were sampled as the control group, and other fish were exposed to ammonia nitrogen for 48 h. Two concentrations of total ammonia nitrogen (TAN) were used in this study: 120 mg/L TAN (low concentration exposure group), and 1200 mg/L TAN (high concentration exposure group). After exposure to ammonia nitrogen for 48 h, fish were sampled. The results indicated that adding seaweed polysaccharides to the diet could improve the survival rate of hybrid snakeheads under high concentration of ammonia stress. Histopathological analysis demonstrated multiple abnormalities in gills and intestines after exposure to two concentrations of TAN. The activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione (GSH), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) were all increased in the MR group under two concentrations of TAN stress. The mRNA abundance of immune-related genes in fish intestinal tissues was significantly induced or inhibited. These results suggested that partial replacement of dietary flour meal with seaweed polysaccharides improved the ability of hybrid snakeheads to resist ammonia stress.

Abstract
Chondroitin sulfate E (CS-E), which is characterized by oversulfated disaccharide units, has been shown to regulate neuronal adhesion, neurite outgrowth and exert neuroprotective effects. In view of these findings, here we investigated the anti-Alzheimer's disease (AD) activities of CSE by using transgenic Caenorhabditis elegans model of Alzheimer's disease. The behavioral experiments demonstrated that CSE at the concentration of 1 mg/ml significantly delayed the worm paralysis caused by Aβ aggregation as compared with control group. Western blot analysis revealed that the level of small oligomers in the transgenic C. elegans was significantly reduced upon treatment with CSE. The number of Aβ plaque deposits in transgenic worm was significantly decreased. In addition, CSE also protected the worms from oxidative stress and rescued chemotaxis dysfunction in transgenic strain CL2355. Taken together, these data suggested that CSE could protect against Aβ-induced toxicity in C. elegans. These results offer valuable evidence for the future use of CSE in the development of agents for the treatment of AD.

Abstract
It has recently been demonstrated that chronic supplementation with nonanimal chondroitin sulfate (nonanimal CS) in overweight subjects with knee osteoarthritis (OA) improves the function, pain and inflammation, but there are no studies of its effectiveness in an acute setting. In 48 obese subjects with moderate knee OA, we investigated the effectiveness of nonanimal CS supplementation for eight weeks on the inflammation, functional status, oxidative stress, cartilage catabolism markers, metabolic profile and body composition, by Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) at the baseline, after 15 days and at the end of the eight-week study. To evaluate the acute effectiveness on inflammation, 15-min cycle training sessions were done 15 days after the start of the study and at the end. C-reactive protein (CRP) was assayed in blood samples collected before and after the two cycling exercises. The 48 obese subjects (M and F, 20–50 years, body mass index (BMI) 30–35 kg/m2) were randomly assigned to an experimental group (N = 24, 600-mg tablet of nonanimal CS/day) or the control group (N = 24, placebo). The between-groups analysis of covariance showed a significant effect on the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Arthritis index (WOMAC) scale (p = 0.000) and CRP (p = 0.022). For intra-group differences, the result was significant in the CS group for BMI, WOMAC, CRP, total cholesterol and Homeostasis Model Assessment (HOMA). In these obese adults with OA, nonanimal CS improved the inflammation, knee function, metabolic profile and body composition.

Sex Differences in Glutathione Peroxidase Activity and Central Obesity in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes at High Risk of Cardio-Renal Disease. Antioxidants (Basel) 2019; 8:antiox8120629. Abstract
Women with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) have an increased susceptibility of developing cardio-renal disease compared to men, the reasons and the mechanisms of this vulnerability are unclear. Since oxidative stress plays a key role in the development of cardio-renal disease, we investigated the relationship between sex, plasma antioxidants status (glutathione peroxidase (GPx-3 activity), vitamin E and selenium), and adiposity in patients with T2DM at high risk of cardio-renal disease. Women compared to men had higher GPx-3 activity (p = 0.02), bio-impedance (p ≤ 0.0001), and an increase in waist circumference in relation to recommended cut off-points (p = 0.0001). Waist circumference and BMI were negatively correlated with GPx-3 activity (p ≤ 0.05 and p ≤ 0.01, respectively) and selenium concentration (p ≤ 0.01 and p ≤ 0.02, respectively). In multiple regression analysis, waist circumference and sex were independent predictors of GPx-3 activity (p ≤ 0.05 and p ≤ 0.05, respectively). The data suggest that increased central fat deposits are associated with reduced plasma antioxidants which could contribute to the future risk of cardio-renal disease. The increased GPx-3 activity in women could represent a preserved response to the disproportionate increase in visceral fat. Future studies should be aimed at evaluating if the modulation of GPx-3 activity reduces cardio-renal risk in men and women with T2DM.

Abstract
In Taiwan, the herbal formula B401 is considered as a health supplement for middle-aged women that can alleviate sweating, anxiety, and sleep disorders. However, the relevant mechanisms are still unclear. In this study, we evaluated the beneficial effects of the herbal formula B401 therapy in the reproductive regulation of ovariectomised mice. Female ICR mice were randomised into four groups: wild-type (WT) mice with sham treatment, wild-type mice treated with the herbal formula B401, bilateral ovariectomised (OVX) mice with sham treatment, and bilateral ovariectomised mice treated with the herbal formula B401. Mice were orally given the herbal formula B401 at a dose of 30 mg/kg bw/day for 2 weeks. At the end of oral treatment with sham or the herbal formula B401, levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), calcium, phosphorus, and estradiol-17β in the blood; uterine weight and endometrial thickness; and expressions of estrogen receptor α (ERα), estrogen receptor β (ERβ), progesterone receptor (PR), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and superoxide dismutase 2 (SOD2) in the uterine tissue were examined and then compared among the four groups of mice. We found that OVX mice decreased levels of calcium, phosphorus, and estradiol-17β in the blood, decreased uterine weight and endometrial thickness, and decreased expressions of ERα, ERβ, PR, and SOD2 in the uterine tissue but increased blood ROS levels compared with those of WT mice. In addition, OVX mice with the herbal formula B401 therapy can increase levels of calcium, phosphorus, and estradiol-17β in the blood, increase uterine weight and endometrial thickness, and increase expressions of ERα, ERβ, PR, VEGF, and SOD2 in the uterine tissue but decrease blood ROS levels. Our results may provide reasonable explanation for the reproductive regulation of the herbal formula B401 therapy.

Abstract
Cryoprotective agents (CPAs) are used in cryopreservation protocols to achieve vitrification. However, the high CPA concentrations required to vitrify a tissue such as articular cartilage are a major drawback due to their cellular toxicity. Oxidation is one factor related to CPA toxicity to cells and tissues. Addition of antioxidants has proven to be beneficial to cell survival and cellular functions after cryopreservation. Investigation of additives for mitigating cellular CPA toxicity will aid in developing successful cryopreservation protocols. The current work shows that antioxidant additives can reduce the toxic effect of CPAs on porcine chondrocytes. Our findings showed that chondroitin sulphate, glucosamine, 2,3,5,6-tetramethylpyrazine and ascorbic acid improved chondrocyte cell survival after exposure to high concentrations of CPAs according to a live-dead cell viability assay. In addition, similar results were seen when additives were added during CPA removal and articular cartilage sample incubation post CPA exposure. Furthermore, we found that incubation of articular cartilage in the presence of additives for 2 days improved chondrocyte recovery compared with those incubated for 4 days. The current results indicated that the inclusion of antioxidant additives during exposure to high concentrations of CPAs is beneficial to chondrocyte survival and recovery in porcine articular cartilage and provided knowledge to improve vitrification protocols for tissue banking of articular cartilage.

Abstract
Post-menopausal osteoporosis (PO) is one of the major health issues associated with menopause-related oestrogen withdrawal. Despite the intense research and the relevant progress achieved in the last two decades, the pathogenic mechanism underlying PO is still poorly understood. As a consequence of this gap in the knowledge, such disorder and the related complications are still difficult to be effectively prevented. A wealth of experimental and epidemiological/clinical evidence suggests that the endocrine change associated to menopausal transition might lead to a derangement of redox homeostasis, that is, the prelude to the health-threaten condition of oxidative stress (OxS). In turn, this (bio)chemical stress has been widely hypothesized to contribute, most likely in synergy with inflammation, to the development of menopause-related diseases, including PO. The main aim of this review is to discuss the current literature evidence on the association between post-menopausal oestrogen withdrawal, OxS and PO. It is also aimed to provide a critical overview of the most significant epidemiological studies on the effects of dietary antioxidants on bone health and to devise a strategy to overcome the limitations emerged and controversial results.

Abstract
Due to requirement of novel memory enhancer for menopausal women, this study aimed to determine safety and effect of the functional drink containing the extracts of purple corn cob and pandan leaves (PCP) on memory and brain changes in experimental menopause induced by bilateral ovariectomy (OVX). Acute toxicity of PCP was carried out in female Wistar rats. The results showed that LD50 was more than 2000 mg/kg BW. To determine the cognitive enhancing effect of PCP, OVX rats were orally treated with PCP at the doses of 20, 40, and 80 mg/kg BW for 28 days. The spatial memory was assessed every 7 days throughout the study period. At the end of the study, oxidative stress status, acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity, monoamine oxidase (MAO) activity, neuronal density, and extracellular signal regulated protein kinase 1 and 2 (ERK1/2) signaling in hippocampus were measured. The improved spatial memory, ERK1/2 expression, and neuron density in dentate gyrus of hippocampus were observed in PCP-treated rats. In addition, a reduction of AChE activity was also observed. Unfortunately, no improved oxidative stress status was observed. Taken altogether, PCP exerts the memory-enhancing effect partly through the suppression of AChE and the increase in ERK signaling in the hippocampus.

Abstract
The protective effects of a chondroitin sulfate-rich extract (CSE) from skate cartilage against lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced hepatic damage were investigated, and its mechanism of action was compared with that of chondroitin sulfate (CS) from shark cartilage. ICR mice were orally administrated 200 mg/kg body weight (BW) of CS or 400 mg/kg BW of CSE for 3 consecutive days, followed by a one-time intraperitoneal injection of LPS (20 mg/kg BW). The experimental groups were vehicle treatment without LPS injection (NC group), vehicle treatment with LPS injection (LPS group), CS pretreatment with LPS injection (CS group), and CSE pretreatment with LPS injection (CSE group). Hepatic antioxidant enzyme expression levels in the CS and CSE groups were increased relative to those in the LPS group. In LPS-insulted hepatic tissue, inflammatory factors were augmented relative to those in the NC group, but were significantly suppressed by pretreatment with CS or CSE. Moreover, CS and CSE alleviated the LPS-induced apoptotic factors and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK). In addition, CS and CSE effectively decreased the serum lipid concentrations and downregulated hepatic sterol regulatory element-binding proteins expression. In conclusion, the skate CSE could protect against LPS-induced hepatic dyslipidemia, oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis, probably through the regulation of MAPK signaling.

Abstract
In this review we discuss the sex/estrogen-specific modulation of cardiovascular function and responses to current therapeutics. We discuss how anatomical differences such as a smaller kidney size, and lower glomerular filtration rate in females, reduce the clearance and increase the toxicity of some drugs in females. Other important sex differences include the dampening effect of estrogen on central sympathetic and renin angiotensin systems. Further, we discuss how a shift in myocardial redox status leads to paradoxical transformation of estrogen into a pro-inflammatory hormone. Finally, the review, along with cited recent publications, identify some areas that need further investigation to advance our understanding of the sex differences in cardiovascular disease outcomes to help develop female specific interventions for these anomalies.

Abstract
The postmenopausal phase of life is frequently associated in women with subjective symptoms (e.g. vasomotor) and real diseases (atherosclerosis with coronary ischemia, osteoporosis, Alzheimer-type neurodegeneration, urogenital dystrophy), which together determine the post-menopausal syndrome. Observations that oxidative damage by reactive oxygen/nitrogen species in experimental models can contribute to the pathogenesis of these disturbances stimulated research on the relationships between menopause, its endocrine deficiency, oxidative balance and the "wellness" in postmenopausal life. The connection among these events is probably due to the loss of protective actions exerted by estrogens during the fertile life. Most recent studies have revealed that estrogens exert an antioxidant action not by direct chemical neutralization of reactants as it was expected until recently but by modulating the expression of antioxidant enzymes that control levels of biological reducing agents. Also nutritional antioxidants apparently act by a similar mechanism. From this perspective it is conceivable that a cumulative control of body oxidant challenges and biological defenses could help in monitoring between "normal" and "pathological" menopause. However, as clinical studies failed to confirm this scenario in vivo, we have decided to review the existing literature to understand the causes of this discrepancy and whether this was due to methodologic reasons or to real failure of the basic hypothesis.

Abstract
Reactive oxygen species (ROS) play a central role in estrogen deficiency-induced bone loss. We previously identified and characterized a novel member of the Peroxiredoxin (PRX) like 2 family that we called PAMM: Peroxiredoxin Activated in M-CSF stimulated Monocytes, a redox regulatory protein that modulates osteoclast differentiation in vitro. In this study, we report increased PAMM expression in H2O2-treated cells and in bones from ovariectomized (OVX) mice 4 weeks after surgery, models for oxidative stress in vitro and in vivo, respectively. We also detected increased PAMM abundance and phosphorylated Akt in OVX mice treated with estrogen. In addition, Wortmannin, a specific PI3Kinase inhibitor and Rapamycin, an inhibitor of the PI3Kinase/Akt pathway, blocked Akt phosphorylation and stimulation of PAMM expression by M-CSF. These results indicate that M-CSF-induced PAMM expression is mediated by Akt phosphorylation. Our data also suggest that estrogen-induced PAMM expression is mediated by phosphorylation of Akt. These findings point to PAMM as a potential candidate for Akt-mediated protection against oxidative stress. We previously identified, characterized and proved PAMM is a novel antioxidant protein that regulates osteoclast formation and activity via modulation of ROS production in vitro. PAMM expression is induced by oxidative stress in vivo and in vitro. PAMM expression in osteoclasts is stimulated by estrogen and is mediated by Akt phosphorylation. PAMM may be a potential candidate for Akt-mediated protection against oxidative stress and bone loss induced by estrogen deficiency.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Oxidative stress and resulting cellular damage have been suggested to play a role in the etiology of several chronic diseases, including cancer and cardiovascular disease. Identifying factors associated with reduced oxidative stress and resulting damage may guide future disease-prevention strategies. METHODS In the VITamins And Lifestyle (VITAL) biomarker study of 209 persons living in the Seattle area, we examined the association between current use of several specialty supplements and oxidative stress, DNA damage, and DNA repair capacity. Use of glucosamine, chondroitin, fish oil, methylsulfonylmethane (MSM), coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), ginseng, ginkgo, and saw palmetto was ascertained by a supplement inventory/interview, whereas the use of fiber supplements was ascertained by questionnaire. Supplements used by more than 30 persons (glucosamine and chondroitin) were evaluated as the trend across number of pills/week (non-use, <14 pills/week, 14+ pills/week), whereas less commonly used supplements were evaluated as use/non-use. Oxidative stress was measured by urinary 8-isoprostane and PGF2α concentrations using enzyme immunoassays (EIA), whereas lymphocyte DNA damage and DNA repair capacity were measured using the Comet assay. Multivariate-adjusted linear regression was used to model the associations between supplement use and oxidative stress/DNA damage. RESULTS Use of glucosamine (Ptrend: 0.01), chondroitin (Ptrend: 0.003), and fiber supplements (P: 0.01) was associated with reduced PGF2α concentrations, whereas CoQ10 supplementation was associated with reduced baseline DNA damage (P: 0.003). CONCLUSIONS Use of certain specialty supplements may be associated with reduced oxidative stress and DNA damage. IMPACT Further research is needed to evaluate the association between specialty supplement use and markers of oxidative stress and DNA damage.

Abstract
Post-menopause, there is an increase in body weight, visceral adiposity, and risk of developing non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), which leads to various cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Some natural products have proven useful for counteracting the detrimental effects of menopause. The rhizome of Ligusticum chuanxiong Hort. (LC) is a well-known medicinal herb widely used in Chinese communities for the treatment of CVDs. The hepatic and vascular protective effects of LC ethanolic extract under postmenopausal conditions were investigated on ovariectomized (OVX) rats supplemented with or without LC ethanolic extract (600 mg/kg body weight/day, p.o.) or 17β-estradiol (1 mg/kg body weight/day, p.o.) for 12 weeks. The current findings demonstrated that consumption of LC ethanolic extract could reduce the body weight gain, improve serum lipid profile (lowering low density lipoprotein cholesterol but raising high density lipoprotein cholesterol), combat NAFLD, and protect vascular endothelium in the OVX rats. The beneficial effects of LC may be associated with its antioxidant or vasorelaxant compounds, which enhance the levels of hepatic antioxidant enzymes and up-regulate endothelial nitric oxide synthase mRNA expression, respectively. Taken together, LC may be a promising natural supplement for postmenopausal women to prevent NAFLD and CVDs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Ovarian senescence affects many tissues and produces a variety of symptoms and signs. We hypothesized that estrogens may also influence circulating redox balance by regulating activity of the cellular antioxidative enzyme system. We aimed to explore the impact of surgical estrogen deprivation and replacement (ERT) on the glutathione balance and antioxidant enzymes expression in fertile women. STUDY DESIGN Nineteen healthy premenopausal women who underwent total hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy were evaluated at baseline, 30 days after surgery without ERT and 30 days after ERT. Redox balance was determined by measuring blood reduced (GSH) and oxidized (GSSG) glutathione, as well as the GSSG/GSH ratio. Antioxidant status was evaluated by measuring serum estrogen (E2) levels and mRNA expression of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and glutathione S-transferase (GST) in peripheral blood mononuclear cells. RESULTS Serum E2 significantly lowered after surgery, and increased in 12 out of 19 patients after 30 days of ERT (Responders). In such patients, an increase in oxidative stress was observed after surgery that resolved after ERT. Oxidative stress was sustained by reduction in the mRNA expression of both SOD and GSH-Px, that recovered after 30 days of therapy in responders. CAT and GST mRNA expression were not modified by surgery and replacement therapy. CONCLUSIONS Menopause is associated with significant change in antioxidant gene expression that in turn affects circulating redox state. Estrogens replacement therapy is able to prevent and counteract such modifications by acting as regulators of key antioxidant gene expression. These findings suggest that antioxidant genes are, almost in part, under the control of sex hormones, and that pathophysiology of the difference in gender disease may depend on the redox biology.

Abstract
Glucocorticoids (GCs) potentially regulate the proliferation, differentiation, and premature senescence of bone marrow mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs). In the present study we investigated the effects mediated by endogenous GCs and the effects of an antagonist of the glucocorticoid receptor, RU486, on the proliferative and differentiation capabilities of MSCs using an ovariectomized (OVX) animal model. Following ovariectomy and a decrease in systemic estradiol levels, the serum concentration of corticosterone is significantly increased in OVX rats. Compared to sham-operated controls, the total superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity in serum of OVX rats and the proliferation of their MSCs are significantly reduced. Furthermore, the osteogenic differentiation capabilities of OVX rat MSCs are significantly decreased, while adipogenic capabilities tend to increase. Subcutaneous administration of RU486 effectively increases the population and proliferative capacity of the MSCs in OVX rats. RU486 treatment also improves osteogenic capabilities and down-regulates adipogenic capabilities of MSCs. These results strongly indicate that the elevated levels of endogenous GCs induced by estrogen depletion might accelerate the premature senescence of MSCs and reduce their proliferative and osteogenic differentiation capabilities, while the blockage of the effects of endogenous GCs may restore their capabilities. These responses could potentially be developed to protect the capabilities of MSCs from oxidative stress-induced premature senescence and extend their lifespan in patients with advancing age and estrogen depletion.

Abstract
Clinically, girls appear to be more sensitive than boys to the cardiotoxic effects of doxorubicin, whereas the opposite may be true for adults. To identify and characterize potential sex-related differences, adult male and female spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR; some ovariectomized [OVX]) received 1 mg/kg of doxorubicin or saline iv weekly for 9, 10, or 12 weeks. Weight gain was slower in treated males. Serum concentrations of cholesterol and triglycerides increased and those of albumin decreased in both sexes, but changes were more pronounced in treated males. Treated males had significantly more severe cardiomyopathy scores and higher serum levels of cTnT than females. The increased cardiotoxicity was accompanied by higher numbers of cardiac mast cells (MCs) and percentage of cardiac MCs undergoing degranulation. Doxorubicin-treated OVX animals had significantly increased numbers of cardiac MCs, more severe myocardial lesions, and elevated serum concentrations of cTnT compared to doxorubicin-treated normal female SHR. The severity of cardiac lesions in the OVX female was similar to that observed in doxorubicin-treated males. This study demonstrated the presence of sex-related differences in the cardiotoxic effects elicited by doxorubicin and identified variations in the level of cardiac MC activity as a factor which could possibly contribute to the male-female dissimilarity.

Abstract
The present study aims to test two different doses of aqueous extract of black maca on learning and memory in ovariectomized (OVX) mice and their relation with malonalehyde (MDA), acetylcholinesterase (Ache) and monoamine oxidase (MAO) brain levels. Female mice were divided into five groups: (i) naive (control), (ii) sham, (iii) OVX mice and OVX mice treated with (iv) 0.50 g kg−1 and (v) 2.00 g kg−1 black maca. Mice were orally treated with distilled water or black maca during 35 days starting 7 days after surgery. Memory and learning were assessed using the water Morris maze (from day 23–27) and the step-down avoidance test (days 34 and 35). At the end of each treatment, mice were sacrificed by decapitation and brains were dissected out for MDA, Ache and MAO determinations. Black maca (0.5 and 2.0 g/kg) increased step-down latency when compared to OVX control mice. Black maca decreased MDA and Ache levels in OVX mice; whereas, no differences were observed in MAO levels. Finally, black maca improved experimental memory impairment induced by ovariectomy, due in part, by its antioxidant and Ache inhibitory activities.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Oestrogen defciency increases oxidative stress postmenopause, while tempol is an intracellular radical scavenger that interferes with the formation or effects of many radicals. We aimed to investigate the effects of oestrogen and tempol on oxidative stress parameters in the kidney and liver of ovariectomized mice. MATERIAL AND METHODS Forty 8-week-old female Bald/c mice were divided into five groups: sham-operated, ovariectomized mice without treatment, ovariectomized mice treated with tempol, ovariectomized mice treated with 17beta-oestradiol and ovariectomized mice treated with 17beta-oestradiol and tempol. Oxidative stress in liver and kidney tissues was investigated by measuring 2-thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBA-RS), reduced glutathione, myeloperoxidase, superoxide dismutase and catalase levels. RESULTS TBA-RS levels were increased and reduced glutathione, myeloperoxidase, superoxide dismutase levels were decreased in the tissues of ovariectomized mice. This effect of ovariectomy on oxidative stress parameters was opposed significantly by the administration of tempol and 17beta-oestradiol either alone or in combination. Ovariectomy reduced the kidney catalase levels, but the effect was not statistically significant (p>0.05). On the other hand, catalase levels were elevated significantly in all treatment groups compared to those of the ovariectomized group (p<0.05). CONCLUSION These study findings demonstrate that tempol significantly opposes the oxidative stress generated by ovariectomy. This effect, which is evident in remote tissues such as liver and kidney, is comparable to that of physiological levels of oestradiol.

Abstract
The aging theory postulates that this process may be due to the accumulation of oxidative damage in cells and molecules. The present study has investigated the effect of castration in old female rats on various parameters related to the antioxidant properties of several cellular fractions obtained from the liver, and the influence of several chronic treatments on it, both in intact and castrated animals. Sixty-one 22-month-old Wistar female rats, were used. About 21 intact animals were divided into three groups and treated for 10 weeks with GH, melatonin or saline, and 40 ovariectomized (at 12 months of age) animals were divided into five groups and treated for the same time with GH, melatonin, estrogens (Eos), phytoestrogens (Phyt) or saline. All animals were sacrificed at 24 months of age by decapitation. The activity of glutathione peroxidase (GPx) in cytosolic fraction, glutathione-S-transferase (GST) in cytosol and microsomal fractions, and the levels of nitric oxide (NO) and cytochrome C in mitochondrial and cytosol fractions of liver were determined. A decrease in GST activity was detected in cytosol and in the microsomal fraction in ovariectomized animals as compared to intact rats. The activity of GPx was also decreased in ovariectomized as compared with the intact group. NO level was increased and cytochrome C decreased in the mitochondrial fraction of the liver in ovariectomized females as compared with the intact group, respectively. No significant changes after melatonin or GH treatments were found in GPx, GST activity and NO level in mitochondrial fraction in the intact group. Administration of GH, melatonin, Eos and Phyt in the ovariectomized groups significantly increased the GPx, and GST activity in the cytosol and microsomal fraction and decreased the level of NO in the mitochondrial fraction as compared with the untreated rats. A significant increase in the level of cytochrome C in the mitochondrial fraction and a decrease in the cytosol fraction were also found with all treatments. The administration of GH, melatonin, Eos and Phyt to castrated females seem to reduce oxidative changes in the liver from old ovariectomized rats.

Abstract
We investigated the acute effect of single-dose cadmium (Cd) treatment on lipid peroxidation and antioxidant enzymes in liver and kidney of rats following an ovariectomy operation. Twenty-eight female Wistar albino rats were used and were divided into four groups: I, control (n=7); II, cadmium (Cd, n=7); III, ovariectomized (Ovx, n=7); and IV, ovariectomized+cadmium (Ovx-Cd, n=7). Fourteen of the rats were ovariectomized. Twelve weeks later, cadmium chloride (CdCl(2), 5 mg/kg) was administered i.p. as a single dose to the Cd and Ovx-Cd groups. Twenty-four hours after the injection, all rats were sacrificed and had their liver and kidney tissues removed for the measurement of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels. SOD activity showed a significant decrease (P<0.001) in both organs of Ovx and Cd rats in comparison to controls. CAT activity was significantly decreased (P<0.01) in the liver of Ovx and Cd groups but not in the kidneys of both groups compared to control values. MDA concentrations were higher (P<0.05) in both organs of Ovx and Cd rats than those values observed in the control group. Similar patterns of changes were observed in the Ovx-Cd rats, but the increase in the MDA levels and the decrease in the antioxidant enzymes for the Ovx-Cd group were higher than those of the Ovx and Cd groups. Based on the data, it can be stated that cadmium increases the effect of ovariectomy on lipid peroxidation, impairs the antioxidant defense system, and induces oxidative stress.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Menopause has been linked with oxidative stress and decreased antioxidant (AO) defence. A connection has been established between menopause and certain periodontal conditions. The objective of this study is to compare serum and gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) total antioxidant capacity (TAOC) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) concentrations in post-menopausal patients with chronic periodontitis (PMCP) with those of pre-menopausal chronic periodontitis patients (CP). MATERIAL AND METHODS Thirty-two PMCP patients, 31 CP patients, 25 post-menopausal periodontally healthy controls (PMPH) and 26 pre-menopausal controls (PH) were studied. After clinical measurements and samplings, serum and GCF TAOC and SOD concentrations were established in turn using an automated TAOC assay and spectrophotometric end point measurement. The results were analysed statistically. RESULTS Serum and GCF TAOC and SOD concentrations were significantly lower in menopause and periodontitis (p<0.05). The lowest values were in the PMCP group, whereas the highest values were in the PH group. While the effect of menopause was more evident in serum antioxidant analysis, the effect of periodontitis was observed to be more apparent in GCF. CONCLUSIONS A decrease in systemic and local AO defence was observed owing to both menopause and periodontitis. The lowest AO values in the PMCP group suggest that menopause may be a risk factor for periodontitis.

Abstract
Ovarian hormone depletion in ovariectomized experimental animals is a useful model with which to study the physiopathological consequences of menopause in women. It has been suggested that menopause is a risk factor for the induction of several cardiovascular disorders. In the present study we analyzed the effects of ovarian hormone depletion by ovariectomy (OVX) in a model of oxidative stress and cardiopathy induced by adriamycin (AD). To evaluate these effects, we measured parameters related to cardiac damage (creatinine kinase, lactate dehydrogenase, aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase) and oxidative stress (malondialdehyde, catalase, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, reduced glutathione, nitric oxide and carbonyl proteins) in cardiac tissue and erythrocytes. OVX was found to alter all markers of oxidative stress and cell damage in cardiac tissue. Similarly, the OVX-derived loss of ovarian hormones enhanced cardiac damage and oxidative stress induced by AD. Our results suggest that antioxidant status in cardiac tissue and erythrocytes is seriously compromised by OVX during the cardiomyopathy induced by AD in experimental animals. In conclusion, the absence of hormones caused by OVX or menopause may induce or accelerate pre-existing cardiovascular dysfunctions.

Abstract
Pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE) is a genetic disease characterized by calcification and fragmentation of elastic fibres of the skin, cardiovascular system and eye, caused by mutations of the ABCC6 gene, which encodes the membrane transporter MRP6. The pathogenesis of the lesions is unknown. Based on studies of similar clinical and histopathological damage present in haemolytic disorders, our working hypothesis is that PXE lesions may result from chronic oxidative stress occurring in PXE cells as a consequence of MRP6 deficiency. Our results show that PXE fibroblasts suffer from mild chronic oxidative stress due to the imbalance between production and degradation of oxidant species. The findings also show that this imbalance results, at least in part, from the loss of mitochondrial membrane potential (DeltaPsi(m)) with overproduction of H2O2. Whether mitochondrial dysfunction is the main factor responsible for the oxidative stress in PXE cells remains to be elucidated. However, mild chronic generalized oxidative stress could explain the great majority of structural and biochemical alterations already reported in PXE.

Abstract
Changes in albumin and antioxidant enzyme mRNA expression in infant rat liver following administration of total parenteral nutrition (TPN) with/without soybean oil emulsion were studied. Infant rats were divided into three groups: group 1=oral diet, group 2=TPN without fat, and group 3=TPN with 20% of calories from soybean oil emulsion. The period of TPN administration was 4 d. Serum aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase levels were higher in group 2 than in the other groups, with similar levels seen in the other groups. Albumin, Cu, Zn-superoxide dismutase, and glutaredoxin 1 mRNA expression levels were lower in group 2 than in the other groups, with similar levels seen in the other groups. Catalase mRNA expression was higher in group 1 than in the other groups, with the lowest level seen in group 2. Soybean oil emulsion should be included in TPN regimens to prevent down-regulation of albumin and antioxidant enzyme mRNA expression.
