Abstract
To develop a long-term drug delivery system for the treatment of primary and metastatic peritoneal carcinoma (PC) by intraperitoneal (IP) injection, a disulfiram (DSF)/copper gluconate (Cu-Glu)-co-loaded bi-layered poly (lactic acid-coglycolic acid) (PLGA) microspheres (Ms) - thermosensitive hydrogel system (DSF-Ms-Cu-Glu-Gel) was established. Rate and mechanisms of drug release from DSF-Ms-Cu-Glu-Gel were explored. The anti-tumor effects of DSF-Ms-Cu-Glu-Gel by IP injection were evaluated using H22 xenograft tumor model mice. The accumulative release of DSF from Ms on the 10th day was 83.79% without burst release. When Ms were dispersed into B-Gel, burst release at 24 h decreased to 14.63%. The results showed that bis (diethyldithiocarbamate)-copper (Cu(DDC)2) was formed in DSF-Ms-Cu-Glu-Gel and slowly released from B-Gel. In a pharmacodynamic study, the mount of tumor nodes and ascitic fluid decreased in the DSF-Ms-Cu-Glu-Gel group. This was because: (1) DSF-Ms-Cu-Glu-Gel system co-loaded DSF and Cu-Glu, and physically isolated DSF and Cu-Glu before injection to protect DSF; (2) space and water were provided for the formation of Cu(DDC)2; (3) could provide an effective drug concentration in the abdominal cavity for a long time; (4) both DSF and Cu(DDC)2 were effective anti-tumor drugs, and the formation of Cu(DDC)2 occurred in the abdominal cavity, which further enhanced the anti-tumor activity. Thus, the DSF-Ms-Cu-Glu-Gel system can be potentially used for the IP treatment of PC in the future.

Abstract
Herein we describe the facile synthesis of new N-doped carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) obtained from 1,10-phenanthroline by the solvothermal method. Characterization of CNPs were carried out with transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR), UV-vis absorption spectra, and luminescence spectra. CNPs were pH sensitive and exploited as fluorescent chemosensors and imaging agents for Al(III) and Zn(II) ions in real-life samples. Remarkably, we show that CNPs can be used for the detection of Al(III) and Zn(II) ions in water samples. Accordingly, the results indicate that CNPs are highly effective in detecting Zn(II) content of cosmetic creams. We also demonstrated that the CNPs could be used for in vitro imaging of Al(III) and Zn(II) in Human Larynx Squamous Cell Carcinoma (Hep-2). Finally, Al(III) imaging in Angelica Officinalis root tissue was also achieved successfully. The CNPs are promising as luminescent multianalyte (pH, Al(III) and Zn(II)) sensors.

Abstract
Surfaces with underoil superhydrophilic (UOSHL) and underwater superoleophobic (UWOHB) have great potential for on-demand emulsion separation. However, the fabrication of underoil superhydrophilic based on wetting thermodynamic principles is quite challenging. Several previous studies have shown that some sarcocarps are able to spontaneously absorb water to moisturize themselves and have a unique UOSHL ability. By mimicking this unique ability of the sarcocarp, an outstanding UWOHB and UOSHL membrane was prepared. We choose 2300 mesh stainless steel mesh (SSM) as the substrate, then grow Cu and Cu(OH)2 on SSM by a simple electrochemical method, and finally grow HKUST-1 crystals via a fast in situ growth method. The whole preparation process is simple, low cost, and does not require complex and long-term hydrothermal reactions. By growing HKUST-1 crystals, the prepared surface successfully achieved the required UOSHL and UWOHB properties. When the water droplets come into contact with the membrane under n-hexane, it will diffuse and can completely spread out in 2 s. The as-prepared membrane exhibits outstanding anti-fouling and self-cleaning properties for rapeseed oil and crude oil with high viscosity underwater due to the special wetting. By prewetting the surface with an appropriate amount of the dispersion medium, it can rapidly and efficiently on-demand separate different emulsions. The separation efficiencies of water-in-oil emulsions and oil-in-water emulsions are above 99.00 and 97.00%. With their outstanding performance in self-cleaning, on-demand emulsion separation, low cost, and fast preparation, the as-prepared UOSHL and UWOHB HKUST-1 meshes show excellent potential for treating oily wastewater in practical applications.

Abstract
A novel porous polyoxometalate (POM)-based composite (Co4PW-PDDVAC) was prepared via the solidification of water-soluble polytungstate (Co4PW) on the polymeric ionic liquid dimethyldodecyl-4-polyethylene benzyl ammonium chloride (PDDVAC) via a cation-exchange reaction. The solidification was confirmed by EDS, SEM, FT-IR, TGA, and so on. The strong covalent coordination and hydrogen-bonding interaction between the highly active Co2+ of the Co4PW and the aspartic acid residues of proteinase K endowed the obtained Co4PW-PDDVAC composite with excellent proteinase K adsorption properties. Thermodynamic investigations indicate that the adsorption behavior of proteinase K was consistent with the linear Langmuir isothermal model, giving an adsorption capacity as high as 1428 mg g-1. The Co4PW-PDDVAC composite was applied in the selective isolation of highly active proteinase K from Tritirachium album Limber crude enzyme fluid.

Abstract
Ferroelectric barium titanate (BTO) powder particles were encapsulated by three different sizes of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) platelets. The size of the graphene oxide (GO) platelets is controlled by varying the horn type ultrasonic times, i.e. 0, 30, and 60 min, respectively, and they are reduced with hydrazine to obtain rGO-encapsulated BTO (rGO@BTO) film. The rGO@BTO film exhibits an increase in the dielectric characteristics due to the interfacial polarization. These improved characteristics include a dielectric constant of 194 (a large increment of 111%), along with the dielectric loss of 0.053 (a slight increment of 13%) at 1 kHz, compared to the pure BTO dielectric film. The improvement in the dielectric constant of the rGO@BTO is attributed to the encapsulation degree between the rGO platelets and BTO powder particles, which results in the interfacial polarization and micro-capacitor effect in a dielectric film, and also contributes to a low dielectric loss. Therefore, a suitable size of rGO platelets for encapsulation is essential for high-dielectric performance. The controlled graphene size affected the dielectric performance of graphene encapsulated BaTiO3 (rGO@BTO) particles. The dielectric performance increased by 33% higher than the dielectric constant after 1 h, while maintaining the low dielectric loss.![]()

Abstract
This study describes the long-distance diastereomeric effect on thermoresponsive properties in water-soluble diastereomeric polyurethanes (PUs) composed of an l-lysine ethyl ester diisocyanate and a trimethylene glycol l-/d-tartrate ester, which have differences in spatial arrangements of the ethyl esters in the mirror image. The PUs based on l-lysine and l-/d-tartrate ester, named l-PU and d-PU, were synthesized with various number average molecular weights from 4700 to 13 100. In turbidimetry, l-PU showed a steep phase transition from 100%T to 0%T within about 10 °C at 4 g L−1, whereas d-PU did not change completely to 0%T transmittance even at 80 °C at 4 g L−1. In addition, the thermoresponsive properties of l-PU were less affected by concentration than those of d-PU. This long-distance diastereomeric effect on thermoresponsive behavior between l-PU and d-PU appeared in common among 6 samples with 4700 to 13 100 number average molecular weight. Abstract
Chemical modification provides a solution to the membrane fouling problem in oily water purification. However, complicated synthesis processes and harsh reaction conditions are frequently encountered with this approach. Here we developed two bifunctional zwitterionic materials, i.e., n-aminoethyl piperazine propanesulfonate (P-SO3-NH2) and 1,4-bis (3-aminopropyl) piperazine propanesulfonate (P-2SO3-2NH2), by a clean method and grafted them onto membrane surface via a fast single-step reaction. These materials endow the resultant membrane a more hydrophilic and smoother surface, significantly improving the water permeability, fouling resistance and recyclability of membrane in forward osmosis oily water reclamation. The water fluxes produced by the P-2SO3-2NH2 modified membrane are 47% (from 20.0 to 29.3 LMH) and 60% (from 16.0 to 25.6 LMH) higher than those of the unmodified membrane when DI water and an oily emulsion (1500 ppm) as the respective feeds. A higher water flux recovery is also achieved for the P-2SO3-2NH2 modified membrane (94%) than that of the nascent membrane (82%) after a 12-h experiment. These promising findings coupled with a facile and efficient membrane modification approach provide inspiration for both membrane exploration and oily water treatment.

Abstract
Poly(ether–ester)s containing azomethine group in the main chain were synthesized by solution polycondensation of 4,4′-bis(3-hydroxypropyloxy)- N-benzylidene aniline with adipoyl and terephthaloyl diacid chlorides. The synthesized poly(ether–ester)s were characterized by Fourier transform infrared and proton, and carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopic techniques. Thermal properties were studied using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry. Thermal degradation kinetics of poly(ether–ester)s were characterized by TGA at various heating rates (5°C min−1, 10°C min−1, and 20°C min−1). The apparent activation energy for the degradation of both the polymers was determined by three different non-isothermal model-free kinetics methods (Friedmann, Flynn–Wall Ozawa, and Kissinger–Akahira–Sunose). The photoisomerization property was examined with ultraviolet (UV) spectroscopy, and the polymer PEE1 showed a rate of trans to cis isomerization ranging 10–20 s, whereas reverse process took around 100 min in solution. UV studies suggested that this material may be used in the field of rewritable applications.

Abstract
This study describes the development of a new class of high-performance polyurethane elastomer nanocomposites containing reduced graphene oxide (RGO) or graphene nanoplatelets (GNP). Two types of polyurethane elastomers with different contents of hard segments (HS) were used as a polymer matrix. The developed nanocomposites were characterized by thermal analysis (DSC, TG), dynamic mechanical testing (DMA), hardness testing, mechanical properties, rheology, FTIR spectroscopy, XRD, and microscopy investigation (TEM, SEM). Morphological investigation confirmed better compatibility of RGO with the polyurethane (PU) matrix compared to GNP. Both applied nanofillers influenced melting and crystallization of the PU matrix. The nonlinear viscoelastic behavior of the nanocomposites (Payne effect) was studied, and the results were compared with theoretical predictions.

Abstract
In this study, azomethine polyphosphonates were synthesized by solution polycondensation of phenylphosphonic dichloride with various azomethine diols such as [4-(4-hydroxy phenyl) iminomethyl] phenol, [(4-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxy phenyl) iminomethyl)] phenol and [4-(4-hydroxy-3-ethoxy phenyl) iminomethyl] phenol using triethylamine catalyst at ambient temperature. The structure of the synthesized polymers was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared and 1H-, 13C- and 31P- nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopic techniques. Thermal properties of the polymers were studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry under nitrogen atmosphere. The TGA data showed that the synthesized polyphosphonates produce high char yield at 600°C due to the presence of phosphorous atom in the polymer chain and hence have good flame-retardant properties. One of the synthesized polyphosphonate was blended with commercial diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A (DGEBA) resin in various weight percentage and cured with commercial curing agent triethylene tetramine (TETA). The polyphosphonates-blended epoxy thermosets have tensile strength in the range of 5–41 MPa and the percentage of elongation at breaks was 4–18. It was found that the incorporation of polyphosphonates into epoxy thermoset decreased the tensile strength from 41 MPa to 5 MPa, whereas the elongation at break value increased with increase in the weight percentage of polyphosphonate. The influence of polyphosphonates on the flame retardancy of blended thermosets was examined by limiting oxygen index (LOI) and vertical burning (UL-94) tests and found that the polymer samples achieved an increased UL-94 rating and the LOI values were in the range of 24–26. Broido and Horowitz–Metzger methods have been used to study the thermal degradation kinetic parameters.

Abstract
The clinical utility of a small-caliber vascular graft is still limited, owing to the occlusion of graft by thrombosis and restenosis. A small-caliber vascular graft (diameter, 2.5 mm) fabricated by electrospinning with a polyurethane (PU) elastomer (Pellethane) and biofunctionalized with heparin and two cell-adhesive peptides, GRGDS and YIGSR, was developed for the purpose of preventing the thrombosis and restenosis through antithrombogenic activities and endothelialization. The vascular grafts showed slightly reduced adhesion of platelets and significantly decreased adsorption of fibrinogen. In vitro studies demonstrated that peptide treatment on a vascular graft enhanced the attachment of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs), and the presence of heparin and peptides on the graft significantly increased the proliferation of HUVECs. In vivo implantation of heparin/peptides coimmobilized graft (PU-PEG-Hep/G+Y) and PU (control) grafts was performed using an abdominal aorta rabbit model for 60 days followed by angiographic monitoring and explanting for histological analyses. The patency was significantly higher for the modified PU grafts (71.4%) compared to the PU grafts (46.2%) at 9 weeks after implantation. The nontreated PU grafts showed higher levels of α-SMA expression compared to the modified grafts, and for both samples, the proximal and distal regions expressed higher levels compared to the middle region of the grafts. Moreover, immobilization of heparin and peptides and adequate porous structure were found to play important roles in endothelialization and cellular infiltration. Our results strongly encourage that the development of small-caliber vascular grafts is feasible.
