Abstract
Gender differences may play a role in functional outcomes for individuals with schizophrenia. To better understand differences, an exploratory secondary analysis was conducted using data from a large, multi-site study of individuals with schizophrenia in treatment at Veterans Affairs medical centers. Participants completed surveys at baseline (n = 801; 734 men, 67 women) to assess demographics, symptoms, social supports, and recovery; and one year (n = 662; 604 men, 58 women) to assess quality of life and functioning. Hierarchical linear regressions examined interactions of baseline factors with functioning and quality of life. Women and men did not differ significantly in baseline social support, psychiatric symptoms, or recovery. Female gender predicted higher occupational functioning, while social functioning in men was inversely related to baseline symptom severity. Being married predicted higher quality of life for women, but not men. These findings may inform gender tailoring of services for schizophrenia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM Signs and symptoms of schizophrenia may have serious impacts on patients' quality of life leading to concern about different aspects of their lives. This study presents a systematic review and meta-analysis of the studies examining the quality of life among patients with schizophrenia and its relationship with patients' characteristics. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 40 studies were extracted from searching of relevant databases published between 2000 and 2020. Descriptive data and correlation coefficients between patient's characteristics and quality of life were extracted and the results were reported according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses standards and meta-analysis of pooled studies. RESULTS In total, 8363 patients with schizophrenia participated in 40 studies which used Schizophrenia Quality of Life Scale revision 4. The total score of quality of life (QOL) in the study subjects was reported to be 40.66. Weighted effect size analyses revealed a significant relationship between QOL and variables including patients' age and duration of the disease. Furthermore, the highest (the worst) score of QOL in schizophrenia patients was observed in Europe 47.04 (95% CI 41.26 to 52.82) and the Euro region 47.05 (95% CI 41.18 to 52.92). CONCLUSION Overall, the QOL among patients with schizophrenia was in a good status, which could be improved through considering different life aspects of people living in various contexts. In fact, clarifying the determinants of QOL would be a key step in the provision of future treatment efforts.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and third-wave CBT approaches have been shown to ameliorate symptoms of schizophrenia. However, this study uses the functional analytic psychotherapy which focuses on the environmental causes of behavior which includes the client's present environment as well as his history of past interactions with it, to bring about a change in the client and reduce the symptoms. This therapy has never been used earlier with patients having schizophrenia in India; therefore, it was taken up for this study. METHODOLOGY A pre-post design with control group was used in the present study. Ten patients were taken. Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale for measuring symptoms of schizophrenia, Schizophrenia Quality of Life Scale for assessing quality of life, Coping Response Inventory-Adult form for assessing coping skills, Apathy Evaluation Scale-Clinician Version for assessing apathy, Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scale for assessing perceived interpersonal relationship were used for assessment pre- and postintervention. Fifteen sessions were done with each patient within a period of 10 months at the rate of one session per week. Chi-square test, Wilcoxon signed-rank test, and Mann-Whitney U-test were used for the analysis of data. RESULTS Significant improvements were found in positive symptoms, general psychopathology, approach coping mechanisms, psychosocial and motivation domains in quality of life, and perceived cohesion in family among the patients postintervention. CONCLUSION Functional analytic psychotherapy is an effective method for treating patients having schizophrenia with the application of its specifically modified rules for use with patients having psychosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Schizophrenia negatively affects quality of life (QoL). A handful of variables from small studies have been reported to influence QoL in patients with schizophrenia, but a study comprehensively dissecting the genetic and non-genetic contributing factors to QoL in these patients is currently lacking. AIMS We adopted a hypothesis-generating approach to assess the phenotypic and genotypic determinants of QoL in schizophrenia. METHOD The study population comprised 1119 patients with a psychotic disorder, 1979 relatives and 586 healthy controls. Using linear regression, we tested >100 independent demographic, cognitive and clinical phenotypes for their association with QoL in patients. We then performed genome-wide association analyses of QoL and examined the association between polygenic risk scores for schizophrenia, major depressive disorder and subjective well-being and QoL. RESULTS We found nine phenotypes to be significantly and independently associated with QoL in patients, the most significant ones being negative (β = -1.17; s.e. 0.05; P = 1 × 10-83; r2 = 38%), depressive (β = -1.07; s.e. 0.05; P = 2 × 10-79; r2 = 36%) and emotional distress (β = -0.09; s.e. 0.01; P = 4 × 10-59, r2 = 25%) symptoms. Schizophrenia and subjective well-being polygenic risk scores, using various P-value thresholds, were significantly and consistently associated with QoL (lowest association P-value = 6.8 × 10-6). Several sensitivity analyses confirmed the results. CONCLUSIONS Various clinical phenotypes of schizophrenia, as well as schizophrenia and subjective well-being polygenic risk scores, are associated with QoL in patients with schizophrenia and their relatives. These may be targeted by clinicians to more easily identify vulnerable patients with schizophrenia for further social and clinical interventions to improve their QoL.

Abstract
Quality of life (QoL) is an important outcome in psychiatric illnesses like bipolar disorder (BD). However, little is known about the variables that affect it, and therefore contribute to prognosis and treatment outcomes in these populations. This study aimed to explore QoL in BD and investigate its relationship with modifiable (cognitive reserve, cognitive ability, mood symptoms) and non-modifiable factors (diagnosis, previous suicide attempts, substance misuse, age). The WHOQOL-bref was administered to 121 control participants and 109 patients with BD, who also underwent clinical and neuropsychological assessments. Factor analysis was used to identify latent constructs underlying WHOQOL-bref domains, and structural equation models were used to examine predictors of each latent construct. Two latent constructs were identified in the WHOQOL-bref, and labeled 'Personal' and 'Social' QoL. Both were directly predicted by depression symptoms and a diagnosis of BD, and indirectly predicted by (hypo)manic symptoms. Cognitive reserve was a stronger predictor of social QoL than a diagnosis of BD. Our findings suggest that the management of depression symptoms and fostering of cognitive reserve may improve QoL in BD. A diagnosis of BD and/or substance use disorders were risk factors for poor QoL, and may signal the need for preventive interventions to promote well-being.
