What Messages About Osteoporosis Are Offered in Spanish Videos on YouTube?

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this study was to determine the appropriateness of messages on osteoporosis in Spanish videos posted on YouTube.

METHODS

YouTube Spanish language videos on osteoporosis were evaluated. The main variable was the presence of appropriate messages related to osteoporosis. The content was evaluated through a checklist based on available guidelines and reviewed by an expert (E.C.L.). The evaluation was performed twice independently for each video. A discussion of discordant messages was made with the expert. Other variables included were number of views, comments, "likes," and "dislikes"; the total duration of the video; and their source (health professionals and non-health professionals). Bivariate analysis between health professionals and non-health professionals were performed using the Mann-Whitney U and the χ tests.

RESULTS

A total of 148 videos were reviewed. The median appropriate score for all videos was 5 (p25: 3, p75: 9) (maximum possible, 29 points). Seventy-three (49%) videos had a health professional as source, 124 (83.8%) mentioned at least one message in the definition area, 99 (66.9%) in the area of diagnosis, 99 (66.9%) in the area of recommendations, 43 (29.1%) in the area of treatment, and 5 (3.4%) in follow-up. The most frequent message was "risk of fracture" (68.9%).

CONCLUSIONS

The content of osteoporosis information found in YouTube was generally incomplete and inaccurate. The content of these videos should include treatment and preventive strategies.

Exploring the interest in and the usage of the internet among patients eligible for osteoporosis screening

The aim of this study was to evaluate the interest in the Internet and its usage for health-related issues among people eligible for osteoporosis screening. Self-administered questionnaires have been distributed to subjects who were screened for osteoporosis and to menopausal women. 177 patients have responded to the survey (64.5 ± 10.1 years, 88.1% of women). There are 78.5% of Internet users. Among them, 67.2% said searching information about their health and 74.5% said using the Internet for this purpose. All respondents attributed an average score, out of 10, of 5.7 ± 2.3 regarding the reliability of information that they could find on the Internet. The use of the Internet differs significantly depending on age: those who use the Internet are younger (62.1 ± 8.91 years) than those who do not use it (73.3 ± 9.42 years). The socioeconomic status also has an impact on the Internet use: Internet users have a higher education, are more professionally active and have a higher net monthly household income compared to the group of non-users. Even if age and socioeconomic status appear to be determining factors in the use of the Internet for the search of health information in patients eligible for osteoporosis screening, almost 75% of the study population use the Internet for this purpose. Action to promote health through an Internet platform must therefore take these parameters into account.

Assessment of the presence and quality of osteoporosis prevention education among at-risk internal medicine patients

OBJECTIVE

Appropriate calcium and vitamin D intake for the prevention of osteoporosis represents an important component of osteoporosis prevention education (OPE). We sought to assess the presence and quality of OPE among osteoporotic and at-risk inpatients.

DESIGN

Prospective chart review plus cross-sectional interview.

SETTING

One academic tertiary referral medical center in Rochester, Minnesota.

PARTICIPANTS

Adults admitted to an inpatient medicine service who were determined to be at risk for osteoporosis based on an investigator-developed screening tool or previously diagnosed with osteoporosis. Four hundred sixtyfour patients were screened, 192 patients were approached for participation, and 150 patients consented to be interviewed for the study.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES

Source of OPE, rates of appropriate calcium intake and supplementation.

RESULTS

OPE from a health care provider was reported by 31.3% of patients, with only one patient reporting education from a pharmacist. Self OPE and no OPE were received by 29.3% and 39.3% of patients, respectively. Appropriate overall calcium intake was found in 30.7% of patients, and only 21.3% of patients were taking an appropriate calcium salt.

CONCLUSION

Patients with osteoporosis and risk factors for osteoporosis lack adequate education from health care providers regarding appropriate intake of dietary and supplemental calcium and vitamin D. A particular deficit was noted in pharmacist-provided education. Specific education targeting elemental calcium amounts, salt selection, and vitamin D intake should be provided to increase the presence of appropriate overall calcium consumption.
