Abstract
Adipokines are cell-signaling proteins secreted by adipose tissue that has been related to a low-grade state of inflammation and different pathologies. The present review aims to analyze the role of adipokines in health and disease in order to understand the important functions and effects of these cytokines. For this aim, the present review delves into the type of adipocytes and the cytokines produced, as well as their functions; the relations of adipokines in inflammation and different diseases such as cardiovascular, atherosclerosis, mental diseases, metabolic disorders, cancer, and eating behaviors; and finally, the role of microbiota, nutrition, and physical activity in adipokines is discussed. This information would allow for a better understanding of these important cytokines and their effects on body organisms.

Abstract
The growing burden of obesity and osteoporosis is a major public health concern. Emerging evidence of the role of adipokines on bone metabolism has led to the discovery of novel adipokines over the last decade. Obesity is recognized as a state of adipose tissue inflammation that adversely affects bone health. Adipokines secreted from white adipose tissue (WAT) and bone marrow adipose tissue (BMAT) exerts endocrine and paracrine effects on the survival and function of osteoblasts and osteoclasts. An increase in marrow fat is implicated in osteoporosis and, hence, it is crucial to understand the complex interplay between adipocytes and bone. The objective of this review is to summarize recent advances in our understanding of the role of different adipokines on bone metabolism. METHODS This is a comprehensive review of the literature available in PubMED and Cochrane databases, with an emphasis on the last five years using the keywords. RESULTS Leptin has shown some positive effects on bone metabolism; in contrast, both adiponectin and chemerin have consistently shown a negative association with BMD. No significant association was found between resistin and BMD. Novel adipokines such as visfatin, LCN-2, Nesfatin-1, RBP-4, apelin, and vaspin have shown bone-protective and osteoanabolic properties that could be translated into therapeutic targets. CONCLUSION New evidence suggests the potential role of novel adipokines as biomarkers to predict osteoporosis risk, and as therapeutic targets for the treatment of osteoporosis.

Abstract
Background Adipokines are engaged in bone physiology and regulate bone mineral density (BMD) by playing protective or cynical role in bone metabolism. The study is designed to measure and compare BMD, adipokines (retinoic acid receptor responder protein-2 RARRES2, visfatin and Intelectin-1) and their genetic variants in postmenopausal osteoporotic, osteopenic and non-osteoporotic females. Methods This comparative study included postmenopausal non-osteoporotic (n=72), osteopenic (n=72) and osteoporotic (n=100) females with two years of amenorrhea and age between 50 to 70 years. Gold standard DXA was used to measure BMD. Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium was established. Kruskal-Wallis test for comparisons, logistic and multivariate regression analysis were used to rule out the predictors of BMD. Results On comparing the three groups, significant differences were observed in serum RARRES2 (p <0.001) and serum visfatin (p=0.050). The significant positive predictor of BMD at lumbar spine and total hip was serum visfatin. BMD at right and left femoral neck was predicted negatively by serum chemerin while BMD at left femoral neck was also predicted positively by serum calcium levels. There was significant difference in BMD at right femoral neck (p = 0.033) between rs7806429 genotypes. The odds of having low BMD increases with increasing serum levels of chemerin and decreasing serum levels of visfatin and calcium. Conclusion The adipokines RARRES2 and visfatin are associated with BMD. RARRES2 is an independent negative and visfatin is positive predictor of BMD in postmenopausal females. BMD at right femoral neck was significantly low in RARRES2 rs7806429 TC heterozygotes.

Abstract
Purpose Osteoporosis is a complex bone disease influenced by numerous factors. Previous studies have found that some metabolites are related to bone mineral density (BMD). However, the associations between metabolites and BMD under the influence of genes and lifestyle have not been fully investigated. Methods We analyzed the effect of metabolites on BMD under the synergistic effect of genes and lifestyle, using the data of 797 participants aged 55–65 years from the Taizhou Imaging Study. The cumulative sum method was used to calculate the polygenic risk score of SNPs, and the healthful plant-based diet index was used to summarize food intake. The effect of metabolites on BMD changes under the influence of genes and lifestyle was analyzed through interaction analysis and mediation analysis. Results Nineteen metabolites were found significantly different in the osteoporosis, osteopenia, and normal BMD groups. We found two high-density lipoprotein (HDL) subfractions were positively associated with osteopenia, and six very-low-density lipoprotein subfractions were negatively associated with osteopenia or osteoporosis, after adjusting for lifestyles and genetic factors. Tea drinking habits, alcohol consumption, smoking, and polygenic risk score changed BMD by affecting metabolites. Conclusion With the increased level of HDL subfractions, the risk of bone loss in the population will increase; the risk of bone loss decreases with the increased level of very-low-density lipoprotein subfractions. Genetic factors and lifestyles can modify the effects of metabolites on BMD. Our results show evidence for the precise prevention of osteoporosis.

Abstract
Resting metabolic rate (RMR) accounts for most daily energy expenditure. The low carbohydrate diet (LCD) attenuates decreases in RMR. This study aims to investigate the relationship between an LCD and RMR status among overweight and obese women. We enrolled 291 overweight and obese women in this cross-sectional study. Body mass index (BMI), fat mass, fat-free mass, visceral fat, and insulin level were assessed. RMR was measured using indirect calorimetry. LCD score (LCDS) was measured using a validated semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. Analysis of variance, independent sample t-test, and Multinomial logistic regression tests were used. Results showed no relationship between LCDS and deviation of normal RMR (DNR) even after adjust for confounders (increased [Inc.] RMR: odds ratio [OR], 0.97; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.92–1.01; p = 0.20; decreased [Dec.] RMR: OR, 0.97; 95% CI, 0.94–1.00; p = 0.14). Some components of LCDS had no significant association with DNR, such as carbohydrate and Dec. RMR in adjusted model (OR, 1.62; 95% CI, 0.98–1.37; p = 0.08) and monounsaturated fatty acids and Dec. RMR in adjusted model (OR, 0.48; 95% CI, 0.21–1.10, p = 0.08). However, refined grains had a significant association with Inc. RMR in crude model (OR, 0.87; 95% CI, 0.77–0.99, p = 0.04). There is no association between LCDS and RMR status.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Food insecurit (FI) has been considered as reason for childhood and adolescent overweight/obesity (OW/OB). Hence, this study was undertaken to assess these relationships. DESIGN Related articles were found by searching the Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed and Embase databases until October 2019. Odds ratio (OR) was analized by a random-effects model. Standard methods were used for assessment of heterogeneity and publication bias. Data were available from 32 studies. The risk ratios of 139,762 participants were pooled from these articles for the meta-analysis. RESULTS This study domenstrated that children and adolescents in food-insecure condition are not at risk of OW/OB (OR = 1.02 95% CI: 0.99, 1.05). However, subgroup analysis indicated that FI related with inhanced risk of OW/OB in adolescents living in developed countries (OR = 1.14; 95% CI: 1.02, 1.27). Other subgroup analysis indicated that severe FI increased the risk of OW/OB among adolescents (OR = 1.24 95% CI: 1.03-1.49). In addition, we found that lower economic development significantly decreased risk of OW/OB among under 6 year children (OR = 0.88; 95% CI: 0.84, 0.93). CONCLUSIONS Our results showed that higher FI degrees were related with more risks of OW/OB among adolescents (12-18 years). Moreover, the country economic levels had effect on the association between FI and risk of OW/OB.

Abstract
The relationship between heavy metal exposure and risk of osteopenia or osteoporosis has biological plausibility, yet it remains inconclusive; therefore, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the associations between exposure to heavy metals (i.e., cadmium, lead, and mercury) and the risk of osteopenia or osteoporosis. Databases of MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched through November 2019, to identify studies that evaluated the relationship between exposure to cadmium, lead, and mercury and risk of osteopenia or osteoporosis in adults. Fourteen eligible studies were included. Effect sizes expressed as pooled odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were estimated using weighted random-effect models. Exposure to cadmium (OR = 1.35; 95% CI: 1.17 to 1.56; P ≤ 0.001) and lead (OR = 1.15; 95% CI: 1.00 to 1.32; P = 0.05) was associated with an increased risk of osteopenia or osteoporosis, unlike mercury. Subgroup analyses showed cadmium exposure increased the risk of osteopenia or osteoporosis in older (> 65 yrs.; OR = 1.43; 95%CI: 1.08 to 1.88, P = 0.01) compared with younger (18-65 yrs.; OR = 1.24; 95% CI: 1.02 to 1.52, P = 0.03) adults. Also, lead exposure increased the risk in men (OR = 1.55; 95% CI: 1.15 to 2.09, P = 0.007) unlike in women. By contrast to urinary levels, blood (OR = 1.26; 95% CI: 1.08 to 1.47, P = 0.003) and dietary (OR = 1.46; 95% CI: 1.28 to 1.67, P < 0.001) levels of cadmium were associated with an increased risk of osteopenia or osteoporosis. Exposure to cadmium and lead may be associated with an increased risk of osteopenia or osteoporosis, although high heterogeneity was detected.

Abstract
Objectives: Obesity plays an important role in the development of chronic diseases including cardiovascular disease and diabetes. A low resting metabolic rate (RMR) for a given body size and composition is a risk factor for obesity, however, there is limited evidence available regarding the association of nutrient patterns and RMR. The aim of this study was to determine the association of nutrient patterns and RMR in overweight and obese women. Study design: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 360 women who were overweight or obese. Method: Dietary intake was assessed using a semi-quantitative standard food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Nutrient patterns were also extracted by principal components analysis (PCA). All participants were evaluated for their body composition, RMR, and blood parameters. Result: Three nutrient patterns explaining 64% of the variance in dietary nutrients consumption were identified as B-complex-mineral, antioxidant, and unsaturated fatty acid and vitamin E (USFA-vit E) respectively. Participants were categorized into two groups based on the nutrient patterns. High scores of USFA-vit E pattern was significantly associated with the increase of RMR (β = 0.13, 95% CI = 0.79 to 68.16, p = 0.04). No significant associations were found among B-complex-mineral pattern (β = -0.00, 95% CI = -49.67 to 46.03, p = 0.94) and antioxidant pattern (β = 0.03, 95% CI -41.42 to 22.59, p = 0.56) with RMR. Conclusion: Our results suggested that the "USFA-vit E" pattern (such as PUFA, oleic, linoleic, vit.E, α-tocopherol and EPA) was associated with increased RMR.

Abstract
AIMS Adipokines play a major role in developing metabolic syndrome (MetS), and it has been found that there is a significant relationship between MetS and resting metabolic rate (RMR) in obese people. The present study aimed to investigate the mediatory effect of adipokines on the RMR-MetS relationship. METHODS This cross-sectional study included 263 obese and overweight women, mean BMI 33.28 (4.93) kg/m, and mean age 39.02 (11.60) who were assessed for RMR using indirect calorimetry. Moreover, using the body composition analyzer the Body composition was measured. Also, Enzyme-linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) test provided a quantitative measurement of biochemical parameters. RESULTS The results indicated that women in low RMR group had higher fat mass (P < 0.0001), FFM (P = 0.002), weight (P = 0.006), BMI (P < 0.0001), age (P = 0.01), and hs-CRP (P = 0.001). The results did not confirm any significant mediating roles for RBP4 (P = 0.051, β = -0.28) and Vaspin (P = 0.06, β = 0.32) in the RMR-MetS relationship. Additionally, after a binary regression test, Omentin-1 showed a significant mediating role (P = 0.25, β = 0.04) as an interrelated agent to RMR and MetS. CONCLUSION As this study shows, Omentin-1 was found to play a significant mediating role as a mediatory agent in relationship between RMR and MetS.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMOP) has already become a major public health problem. However, there was no bibliometric analysis estimating the evolutionary process of PMOP research. PURPOSE This study aimed to assess its scientific activity. METHODS Publications on PMOP were retrieved from Science Citation Index-Expanded (SCI-E) of the Web of Science (WoS) from 2008 to 2018. VOSviewer software was used for data mining and visualization. The quantity of papers, number of citations, citation frequency per year, and H-index were assessed and compared among different countries, institutes, and researchers. RESULTS A total of 11,142 papers were included and were cited 184,416 times. The USA contributed the most papers (3162), the most citations (83,270 times), and the highest H-index (115). Canada ranked first for the number of papers per million populations and per trillion GDP. Seven of the top ten funding agencies were industries. The key words were stratified into four clusters: cluster 1 ("basic research"), cluster 2 ("diagnosis"), cluster 3 ("treatment"), and cluster 4 ("others"). Average appearing years (AAY) of key words in cluster 1 were the largest compared to those in clusters 2 and 3. For hotspots, "miRNA" showed a relatively latest AAY of 2017.63, followed by "abaloparatide" and "adipokine". CONCLUSION We concluded that the USA and Europe were the most productive regions on PMOP, with a high prevalence of articles supported by pharmaceutical companies. Key word focus gradually shifted from "diagnosis" to "treatment" and then to precision medicine orientated "basic research". It is recommended to pay attention to potential research hotspots, such as "miRNA," "abaloparatide," and "adipokine".

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE Recent studies have shown that dietary variants and genetic variants play a decisive role in the risk of developing osteoporosis. Therefore, the objective of the present study was to examine associations between dietary pattern and bone health, according to the TGF-β1 T869→C polymorphism, in postmenopausal Iranian women. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this study, 264 postmenopausal women aged from 46 to 78 years were examined. Body composition was measured by a body composition analyzer and physical activity by the short-form physical activity questionnaire. Bone mineral density was measured by the DEXA method. Dietary patterns were determined using factor analysis on 27 foods groups, employing a valid, reliable 147-item semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. The dietary patterns were analyzed by the factor analysis method. Blood samples were taken for measuring blood parameters. DNA samples from participants were genotyped using the RFLP-PCR method. RESULTS Three dietary patterns were identified, namely: mediterranean diet, traditional diet, and unhealthy diet-one of which was associated with bone health. Postmenopausal women following a Mediterranean diet had lower weight and central obesity (0.05 > P). Higher adherence to a Mediterranean pattern was positively associated with Z-score L2_L4 lumbar spine (0.05 > P). TGF-β1 T869→C genotypes, after adjustment, were not directly correlated with bone mineral density and body composition (0.05 < P). Moreover, these findings demonstrated that in participants adhering to a Traditional dietary pattern, the C allele carrier group (TC and CC genotypes) had a lower L2_L4 Z-score (P = 0.05). CONCLUSION It seems that the mediterranean diet can be a beneficial dietary pattern in the prevention of osteoporosis and obesity in postmenopausal women. Furthermore (probably in the C allele carrier group), lower vitamin D intake, coupled with adherence to a traditional dietary pattern, reduces the deposition of TGF-beta and increases the risk of lumbar spine osteoporosis.

Abstract
Recent studies have shown that dietary intake and genetic variants play a decisive role in the risk of obesity. Therefore, this study was designed to examine the interaction between dietary fat and PPARGC1A polymorphisms on the level of resting metabolic rate (RMR). We enrolled 288 Iranian overweight and obese women in this cross-sectional study. We sequenced the 648 b.p. DNA in Exon 8 of PPARGC1A gene. We analyzed the two single-nucleotide polymorphisms, namely rs11290186 and rs2970847, in this region. All participants were assessed for RMR, dietary intake, and body composition. This study demonstrated that total cholesterol and insulin levels were positively associated with T allele carriers of rs2970847. Moreover, the A-deletion allele carrier of the rs11290186 genotype had higher triacylglycerol and insulin concentrations. The current study revealed that, after adjustment for energy intake, the AA genotype of PPARGC1A (rs11290186) had a direct association with polyunsaturated fatty acids and linoleic acid intakes. Another important finding in our study was that there was an interaction seen between fat and saturated fatty acids intake with the PPARGC1A genotypes. Women with fat intakes of more than 30% of calorie intake per day and the A-deletion genotype had a lower RMR and RMR/fat free mass (FFM). It seems that the PPARGC1A polymorphisms lead to the downregulation of insulin signaling and subsequently insulin resistance. In addition, the interactions between the PPARGC1A polymorphisms (rs11290186) and the level of dietary fat intake probably can have an effect on RMR and RMR/FFM in obese women.

Abstract
Understanding the modifiable factors that improve and maximize peak bone mass at an early age is necessary to design more effective intervention programs to prevent osteoporosis. To identify these modifiable factors, we analyzed the relationship of physical activity (PA), physical fitness, body composition, and dietary intake with bone stiffness index (SI), measured by quantitative ultrasonometry in young university students (18–21 years). Moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA) was the strongest predictor of SI (β = 0.184; p = 0.035). SI was most closely related with very vigorous PA in males (β = 0.288; p = 0.040) and with the number of steps/day in females (β = 0.319; p = 0.002). An association between thigh muscle and SI was consistent in both sexes (β = 0.328; p < 0.001). Additionally, extension maximal force was a bone SI predictor factor in females (β = 0.263; p = 0.016) independent of thigh muscle perimeter. Calcium intake was the only nutrition parameter that had a positive relationship with SI (R = 0.217; p = 0.022). However, it was not included as a predictor for SI in our regression models. This study identifies predictors of bone status in each sex and indicates that muscle and bone interrelate with PA and fitness in young adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Resting metabolic rate (RMR) used to prognosticate and measure the amount of energy required. Vitamin D is known as a new predictor of RMR. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between vitamin D effects on RMR in connection with the vitamin D receptor (VDR) and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator-1 alpha (PGC-1α) gene expression. METHODS We enrolled 298 overweight and obese adults in this cross-sectional study. Body mass index (BMI), fat mass, fat-free mass, insulin level, visceral fat, and vitamin D status were assessed. RMR was measured by means of indirect calorimetry. The real-time polymerase chain reaction using specific primer pairs for VDR and PGC-1α was performed. RESULTS There were significant differences in terms of fat free mass, fat percentage, insulin levels, RMR/kg body weight, and RMR/BMI, VDR, and PGC-1α among participants were categorized based on the vitamin D status. But after using general linear model for adjusting, all significant results missed their effectiveness except RMR/kg body weight and VDR. Linear regression analysis used to show the mediatory role of VDR and PGC-1α on the RMR/kg body weight and vitamin D status relationship. Our results showed that VDR had a mediatory effect on the relationship between RMR/kg body weight and vitamin D status (β = 0.38, 95% CI -0.48 to 1.60; β = -1.24, 95% CI -5.36 to 1.70). However, PGC-1α did not affect the relationship between RMR/kg body weight and vitamin D status (β = 0.50, 95% CI = -0.02 to 3.42; β = 0.59, 95% CI 0.14-3.90). CONCLUSION Our study showed the mediatory effect of VDR gene expression in the association of 25(OH)2D plasma levels and resting metabolic rate among obese individuals.
