Expanding horizons in conceptual density functional theory: Novel ensembles and descriptors to decipher reactivity patterns

Conceptual density functional theory (CDFT) and the quantum reactivity descriptors stemming from it have proven to be valuable tools for understanding the chemical behavior of molecules. This article is presented as being intrinsically of dual character. In a first part, it briefly reviews, in a deliberately didactical way, the main ensembles in CDFT, while the second half presents two additional ensembles, where the chemical hardness acts as a natural variable, and their respective reactivity descriptors. The evaluation of these reactivity descriptors on common organic chemical reagents are presented and discussed.

On Electron Pair Rearrangements in Photochemical Reactions: 1,3-Cyclohexadiene Ring Opening

1,3-Cyclohexadiene ring opening has been studied within the bonding evolution theory (BET) framework. We have focused on describing for the first time the electron pair rearrangements leading to the cis-1,3,5-hexatriene (HT) product from CHD. The nature of bonding in this process begins with the weakening of the double bonds in the Franck-Condon region. Along the 1¹B surface, the C-C sigma bond weakens. Meanwhile, its density redistributes toward the whole CHD ring, mainly over double bonds. Breaking of this bond occurs on the 2¹A surface due to the symmetrical splitting of pair density from this region. This density redistributes toward the reaction center once the pericyclic minimum is reached. The formation of the double bonds that characterize HT occurs gradually in the ground state. However, near the 2¹A/1¹A intersection, these bonds are partially established.

Anchored atomic tungsten on a B40 cage: a highly active and selective single-atom catalyst for nitrogen reduction

In comparison with the prevalent 2D material-supported single atom catalysts (SACs), the design and fabrication of SACs with single molecule substrates are still challenging. Here we introduce a new type of SAC in which a recently identified all-boron fullerene B40 is employed as the support and its catalytic performance toward the nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) process is explored in theory. Taking advantage of the novel heptagonal ring substructure on the sphere and the electron-deficient nature of boron, the atomic metals are facile to reside on B40 to form atomically dispersed η7-B40M exohedral complexes. Among a series of candidates, originating from the proper metal-adsorbate interactions, the atomic tungsten-decorated B40W is screened out as the most feasible catalyst for the NRR with a low over-potential and high selectivity to passivate the competitive hydrogen evolution process.
