Abstract
Mesoporous silica nanoparticles loaded with rhodamine B and capped with curcumin are used for the selective and sensitive fluorogenic detection of human serum albumin (HSA). The sensing mesoporous silica nanoparticles are loaded with rhodamine B, decorated with aminopropyl moieties and capped with curcumin. The nanoparticles selectively release the rhodamine B cargo in the presence of HSA. A limit of detection for HSA of 0.1 mg/mL in PBS (pH 7.4)-acetonitrile 95:5 v/v was found, and the sensing nanoparticles were used to detect HSA in spiked synthetic urine samples.

Abstract
Anion sensing have attained immense importance as these charged ions are prevailing in agriculture industry and in heavy industry and therefore in the environment around us, chemosensors are commencing to claim several applications as their role is being better perceived day by day. In the current study, coumarin based thiosemicarbazone R-1 (phenyl moiety) and R-2 (benzyl moiety) were synthesized. It was observed that there were variations in the sensing patterns of compound bearing benzyl group, as compared to the simple phenyl group bearing receptor. Different techniques were used to confirm the interaction of coumarin based receptors with anions. These techniques included naked-eye test, UV-visible, 1H NMR, and fluorescence spectroscopic techniques. The synthesized receptors showed selectivity for fluoride ions. Benesi-Hildebrand equation was employed for determining the detection limits and binding constants values. The synthesized receptors were employed as efficient chemosensors in real life samples and satisfactory results were obtained.

Abstract
Reversible deactivation radical polymerization (RDRP) is a class of powerful techniques capable of synthesizing polymers with a well-defined structure, properties, and functionalities. Among the available RDRPs, ATRP is the most investigated. However, the necessity of a metal catalyst represents a drawback and limits its use for some applications. O-ATRP emerged as an alternative to traditional ATRP that uses organic compounds that catalyze polymerization under light irradiation instead of metal. The friendly nature and the robustness of O-ATRP allow its use in the synthesis of tailorable advanced materials with unique properties. In this review, the fundamental aspects of the reductive and oxidative quenching mechanism of O-ATRP are provided, as well as insights into each component and its role in the reaction. Besides, the breakthrough recent studies that applied O-ATRP for the synthesis of functional materials are presented, which illustrate the significant potential and impact of this technique across diverse fields.

Abstract
Bacillus anthracis spores have a unique biomarker of calcium dipicolinate (CaDPA). In this work, we reported a composite nanostructure for the optical sensing of DPA, with Eu (III)-doped metal-organic framework (MOF) as supporting lattice, a rhodamine-derived dye as sensing probe, respectively. By means of XRD, IR, TGA and photophysical analysis, this composite structure was carefully discussed. It was found that rhodamine absorption and emission were enhanced by DPA, while Eu emission was quenched by DPA. As a consequence, two sensing skills were observed from this composite structure, which are colorimetric sensing based on absorption spectra and ratiometric fluorescent sensing based on emission spectra. Linear sensing response was observed for both sensing channels with a warning signal at DPA concentration higher than 140 μM. Good selectivity was confirmed with a low LOD value of 0.52 μM. The sensing mechanism was revealed as the combination of emission turn-on effect triggered by DPA-released protons and emission turn-off effect originated from electron-transfer from EuBTC to DPA. This composite structure showed its advantage of naked eye detection and two sensing skills with linear response.

Abstract
A magnetic nanomaterial for nitrite ion detection was demonstrated in the present study. This nanomaterial was prepared by grafting a rhodamine 6G derivative (denoted as Rh 6G-OH) into the channels of core-shell magnetic mesoporous silica nanospheres. The nanocomposite (denoted as Fe3O4@Rh 6G) showed large surface area and improved fluorescent performance to accumulate and recognize NO2(-), and its superparamagnetic behavior played an important role in reusability. The fluorescent intensity decreased linearly along with the NO2(-) concentration in the range of 1-50 μM, and the detection limit was estimated to be 0.8 μM, which was much lower than the maximum limit of nitrite ion in drinking water (65 μM) recommended by World Health Organization. Importantly, Fe3O4@Rh 6G could be magnetically collected and effectively reutilized after six test cycles.

Abstract
Silica mesoporous supports (SMSs) have a large specific surface area and volume and are particularly exciting vehicles for delivery applications. Such container-like structures can be loaded with numerous different chemical substances, such as drugs and reporters. Gated systems also contain addressable functions at openings of voids, and cargo delivery can be controlled on-command using chemical, biochemical or physical stimuli. Many of these gated SMSs have been applied for drug delivery. However, fewer examples of their use in sensing protocols have been reported. The approach of applying SMSs in sensing uses another concept-that of loading pores with a reporter and designing a capping mechanism that is selectively opened in the presence of a target analyte, which results in the delivery of the reporter. According to this concept, we provide herein a complete compilation of published examples of probes based on the use of capped SMSs for sensing. Examples for the detection of anions, cations, small molecules and biomolecules are provided. The diverse range of gated silica mesoporous materials presented here highlights their usefulness in recognition protocols.

Abstract
A suite of two new tetraruthenium metallarectangles 5 and 6 have been obtained from [2 + 2] self-assemblies between dipyridylethynyltriptycene 2 and one of the two dinuclear arene ruthenium clips, [Ru2 (μ-η4-OO∩OO) (η6-p-cymene)2][OTf]2 ; (OO∩OO = oxalate 3; 6,11-dihydroxy-5,12-naphthacenedionato (dotq) 4; OTf = triflate). These molecular rectangles are fully characterized by 1H NMR spectroscopy, electrospray mass spectrometry. A single crystal of 6 was suitable for X-ray diffraction structural characterization. These new metallarectangles showed fluorescence behavior in solution, have been examined for emission quenching effects with various aromatic compounds, and show high quenching selectivity and sensitivity towards nitroaromatics, particularly picric acid and trinitrotoluene. Excited-state charge transfer from the rectangles to nitro aromatic substrates can be used to develop selective fluorescent sensors for nitro aromatics.

Abstract
Methods for the continuous monitoring and removal of ultra-trace levels of toxic inorganic species (e.g., mercury, copper, and cadmium ions) from aqueous media such as drinking water and biological fluids are essential. In this paper, the design and engineering of a simple, pH-dependent, micro-object optical sensor is described based on mesoporous aluminosilica pellets with an adsorbed dressing receptor (a porphyrinic chelating ligand). This tailor-made optical sensor permits ultra-fast (≤ 60 s), specific, pH-dependent visualization and removal of Cu(2+) , Cd(2+) , and Hg(2+) at sub-picomolar concentrations (∼10(-11) mol dm(-3) ) from aqueous media, including drinking water and a suspension of red blood cells. The acidic active acid sites of the pellets consist of heteroatoms arranged around uniformly shaped pores in 3D nanoscale gyroidal mesostructures densely coated with the chelating ligand. The sensor can be used in batch mode, as well as in a flow-through system in which sampling, target ion recognition and removal, and analysis are integrated in a highly automated and efficient manner. Because the pellets exhibit long-term stability, reproducibility, and versatility over a number of analysis/regeneration cycles, they can be expected to be useful for the fabrication of inexpensive sensor devices for naked-eye detection of toxic pollutants.

Abstract
The advent of micro/nanotechnology has blurred the border between biology and materials science. Miniaturization of chemical and biological assays, performed by use of micro/nanofluidics, requires both careful selection of the methods of fabrication and the development of materials designed for specific applications. This, in turn, increases the need for interdisciplinary combination of suitable microfabrication and characterisation techniques. In this review, the advantages of combining X-ray lithography, as fabrication technique, with small-angle X-ray scattering measurements will be discussed. X-ray lithography enables the limitations of small-angle X-ray scattering, specifically time resolution and sample environment, to be overcome. Small-angle X-ray scattering, on the other hand, enables investigation and, consequently, adjustment of the nanostructural morphology of microstructures and materials fabricated by X-ray lithography. Moreover, the effect of X-ray irradiation on novel materials can be determined by use of small-angle X-ray scattering. The combination of top-down and bottom-up methods to develop new functional materials and structures with potential in biology will be reported.

Abstract
Rational construction of interfaces based on multicomponent responsive systems in which molecular transport is mediated by structures of nanoscale dimensions has become a very fertile research area in biomimetic supramolecular chemistry. Herein, we describe the creation of hybrid mesostructured interfaces with reversible gate-like transport properties that can be controlled by chemical inputs, such as protons or calcium ions. This was accomplished by taking advantage of the surface-initiated polymerization of 2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl phosphate (MEP) monomer units into and onto mesoporous silica thin films. In this way, phosphate-bearing polymer brushes were used as "gatekeepers" located not only on the outer surface of mesoporous thin films but also in the inner environment of the porous scaffold. Pore-confined PMEP brushes respond to the external triggering chemical signals not only by altering their physicochemical properties but also by switching the transport properties of the mesoporous film. The ion-gate response/operation was based on the protonation and/or chelation of phosphate monomer units in which the polymer brush works as an off-on switch in response to the presence of protons or Ca(2+) ions. The hybrid meso-architectured interface and their functional features were studied by a combination of experimental techniques including ellipso-porosimetry, cyclic voltammetry, X-ray reflectivity, grazing incidence small-angle X-ray scattering, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and in situ atomic force microscopy. In this context, we believe that the integration of stimuli-responsive polymer brushes into nanoscopic supramolecular architectures would provide new routes toward multifunctional biomimetic nanosystems displaying transport properties similar to those encountered in biological ligand-gated ion channels.

Abstract
In the present work, a multifunctional inorganic-organic hybrid nanomaterial (MMS-Py) was prepared by the immobilization of a pyrene-based receptor (Py) within the channels of magnetic mesoporous silica nanocomposites (MMS), and characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, N(2) adsorption/desorption, superconducting quantum interference device, and photoluminescence spectra. This multifunctional nanomaterial exhibits superparamagnetic behavior, ordered mesoporous characteristics, and significantly improved fluorescence sensing properties that allow for highly sensitive and reproducible Hg(2+) detection. The fluorogenical responses of MMS-Py are stable over a broad pH range. A detection limit of 1.72 ppb is obtained, which is 2 orders of magnitude lower than that based on bulk mesoporous materials. Additionally, this nanomaterial shows high performance in convenient magnetic separability and efficient removal of Hg(2+). These results indicate that these multifunctional nanocomposites may find potential applications for simple detection and easy removal of Hg(2+) in biological, toxicological, and environmental areas.
