Abstract
In this study, a developed chromatographic stationary phase combines the high selectivity of mixed-mode retention with a temperature-responsive property to boost separation efficiency. Copolymer brushes were grafted onto silica gels through surface initiated-atom transfer radical polymerization by polymerizing two types of monomer, temperature-responsive vinylcaprolactam (VCl) and quinine (Qun) containing benzopyridine, a tertiary ammonium positive center, and hydroxyl groups. The obtained silica@poly(Qun-co-VCl) stationary phases were packed as a chromatographic column, and the retention behavior of hydrophobic polycyclic aromatics, highly polar nucleosides, charged organic acids and β-agonists was studied for this column under different separation modes. The ability to separate different types of analyte shows that the silica@poly(Qun-co-VCl) column provides multiple hydrophobic, hydrophilic and electrostatic interactions toward analytes, achieving the separation of various compounds in one column. In addition, temperature-dependent resolution of polycyclic aromatics, nucleosides, organic acids and β-agonists was investigated using modulation of the column temperature, and the column exhibited adjustable separation selectivity by simply changing the column temperature. These results demonstrate that the grafting of copolymer brushes on a silica surface, consisting of temperature-responsive poly-VCl and multifunctional groups of poly-Qun, is useful as a mixed-mode chromatographic stationary phase for thermally-modulated multiple interactions. Additionally, this column was also used for the quantitative detection of uridine and inosine from cordyceps.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Due to their large surface area and distinctive adsorption affinity, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) appear to be good candidates as liquid chromatographic separation materials with good application prospect. The development of COF materials in chromatographic science is currently in an exploratory stage. Especially, the practicability of COF@silica composite materials as liquid chromatographic stationary phases needs further exploration. Reasonably integrating a functional component such as ionic liquid (IL) into the COF@silica composite materials may provide customized functionality to achieve the purpose of synthesizing multi-functional COF based stationary phases. RESULTS In this study, an IL modified COF bonded silica composite material (IL-COF@SiO2) was successfully synthesized by using an environmentally friendly deep eutectic solvent as the reaction medium instead of the frequently-used organic solvent. The synthesized IL-COF@SiO2 composite material combines the excellent separation ability of COF and the excellent mass transfer function of spherical porous silica microsphere, and meanwhile, the introduction of IL endows COF@SiO2 with preferable separation performance. The slurry-packed IL-COF@SiO2 liquid chromatographic column could be applied to effectively separate hydrophobic and hydrophilic compounds with preferable separation selectivity and high column efficiency. By investigating the retention behavior and influencing factors, a mixed-mode retention mechanism was found. Multiple interaction forces endow the IL-COF@SiO2 with a hydrophilic-hydrophobic balance performance, demonstrating a good application prospect as a versatile liquid chromatographic separation material. SIGNIFICANCE In this study, a new strategy is proposed for greenly synthesizing a novel IL-COF@SiO2 composite material under mild conditions, which expands the potential application of COF materials in chromatographic science. One particular point to note is that the reaction medium in each step of the preparation process is low toxic and degradable deep eutectic solvent, which conforms to the concept of green chemistry.

Abstract
In this work, tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA) was used as precursor and reaction medium to prepare tetraethylenepentamine-functionalized carbon dots (TEPACDs), the resultant mixture was subsequently silanized and then grafted on the surface of bare silica. The obtained tetraethylenepentamine-functionalized carbon dots and tetraethylenepentamine co-modified silica stationary phase (Sil-TEPA/CDs) was characterized by multiple ways, such as Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), elemental analysis and transmission electron microscope, which revealed the successful preparation of the mixed stationary phase and higher density of functional groups on co-modified stationary phase than precursor single-modified stationary phase. The synergistic effect of TEPACDs and TEPA was proved by comparing the separation performance of Sil-TEPA/CDs and Sil-TEPA toward amino acids, nucleosides, and nucleobases, which distinctly enhanced the selectivity of Sil-TEPA/CDs. Thus, 12 nucleosides and nucleobases and 11 amino acids was nicely separated on Sil-TEPA/CDs. By study the influences of the changes of mobile phase composition, mobile phase buffer concentration and buffer pH on the retention behaviors of Sil-TEPA and Sil-TEPA/CDs, it was found that both hydrophilic partitioning and adsorption of analytes on Sil-TEPA/CDs were enhanced benefit from the co-existence of TEPA and TEPACDs, which provided the analytes better separation performance. By comparing the column quality of Sil-TEPA/CDs with four commercially available columns, Sil-TEPA/CDs exhibited the best peak asymmetry of 0.98, and second best column efficiency of 43895 m-1 using guanosine as analyte. The RSD (n = 9) of the retention times of five selected analytes on Sil-TEPA/CDs were within 0.30-0.61% during 40 h of continuously elution, which implied excellent stability of prepared packing material.

Abstract
In this work, phosphorus-doped carbon dots (P-DESCDs) were successfully prepared using choline chloride/lactic acid type deep eutectic solvent and phosphoric acid as ingredients, and (3-aminopropyl) trimethoxysilane was used as a bridge to graft P-DESCDs onto the silica surface to obtain a new mixed-mode stationary phase (Sil-P-DESCDs) for reversed-phase and hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography. The successful preparation of the stationary phase was confirmed by laser scanning confocal microscopy, elemental analysis, and Fourier transform infrared spectrometry. Interestingly, the doping of phosphorus greatly improved the separation performance and hydrophilicity of the Sil-P-DESCDs column. The Sil-P-DESCDs column was found to have certain hydrophobicity, hydrogen bonding ability and shape selectivity by Tanaka and Engelhardt standard test mixtures, and a series of hydrophilic and hydrophobic compounds such as alkylbenzenes, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, sulfonamides, aromatic amines, phenols, flavonoids, nucleoside bases, and alkaloids. In addition, the effects of mobile phase ratio, column temperature, flow rate, salt concentration, and pH on the retention of analytes on Sil-P-DESCDs columns were investigated. Finally, the Sil-P-DESCDs column was applied to the qualitative and quantitative analysis of calcein-7-glucoside in the real sample of medicinal Astragalus pellets, and it was found at a concentration of 0.02 mg/mL.

Abstract
Various polar stationary phases have become available for hydrophilic interaction chromatography (HILIC) and help drive continuous applications in biomedical, environmental and pharmaceutical areas in the past decade. Although the stationary phases for HILIC have been reviewed previously, it is an appropriate time to take another look at the progresses during the past five years. The current review provides an overview of the polar stationary phases commercially available for HILIC applications in an effort to assist scientists in selecting suitable columns. New types of stationary phase that were published in literature in the past five years are summarized and discussed. The trend in stationary phase research and development is also highlighted. Of particular interest is the experimental evidence for direct interactions of polar analytes with the ligands of the stationary phases under HILIC conditions. In addition, two different approaches have been developed to delineate the relative significance of the partitioning and adsorption mechanisms in HILIC, representing an important advancement in our understanding of the retention mechanisms in HILIC.

Abstract
Covalent organic polymers (COPs) are a promising class of cross-linked polymeric networks that attracted extensive attention in separation and analysis fields. Exploring facile and convenient strategy to prepare COPs-based mixed-mode stationary phases for high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) has seriously lagged and has never been reported. Herein, we describe a facile in-situ grow strategy for fabrication of silica@COPs core-shell composites (SiO2@TpBD-(OH)2) as a novel mixed-mode stationary phase for HPLC. Owing to the co-existing of abundant hydroxyl, carbonyl, imine, cyclohexyl groups, and benzene rings in the skeleton of COPs shell, the developed mixed-mode stationary phase exhibits hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography (HILIC)/reversed-phase liquid chromatography (RPLC)/ion-exchange chromatography (IEX) retention mechanisms. The content of acetonitrile, pH value, and salt concentration in the mobile phase were investigated on SiO2@TpBD-(OH)2 packed column. In comparison to conventional single-mode columns, the SiO2@TpBD-(OH)2 column showed flexible selectivity, enhanced separation performance, and superior resolution for benzene homologues, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, nucleosides and bases, and acidic organic compounds. The column efficiency of p-nitrobenzoic acid was up to 54440 plates per meter. The packed column also possessed outstanding chromatographic repeatability for six nucleosides and bases with the RSDs of 0.07-0.23%, 0.58-1.77%, and 0.31-1.23% for retention time, peak area, and peak height, respectively. Besides, the SiO2@TpBD-(OH)2 column offered baseline separation of multiple organic pollutants in lake water, which verified its great potential in real sample analysis. Overall, the silica@COPs core-shell composites not only provide a new candidate of mixed-mode stationary phases, but also extend the potential application of COPs in separation science.

Abstract
In this work, 1-vinyl-3-octadecylimidazolium bromide ionic liquids ([C18VIm]Br) and their derived carbon dots (ImC18CDs) were prepared, [C18VIm]Br and ImC18CDs were grafted on the silica to obtain Sil-ImC18 and Sil-ImC18CDs, respectively, and they were also co-grafted on silica which named Sil-ImC18/CDs. Compared with Sil-ImC18 and Sil-ImC18CDs columns, Sil-ImC18/CDs column exhibited enhanced selectivity for separation of tetracyclic/tricyclic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) isomers, and butylbenzene isomers in reversed-phase liquid chromatography, which may be due to the synergistic effect between ImC18CDs and [C18VIm]Br, the π-π interaction between imidazolium and analytes, etc. Meanwhile, the retention behavior of Sil-ImC18/CDs was further evaluated and compared with the commercial C18 column using different classes of analytes, including standard test mixtures of Tanaka, Engelhardt, SRM869b, SRM870. The results demonstrated that co-grafted column exhibited superior separation performance. And this column was applied to determine the contents of calycosin-7-glucoside, ononin, calycosin and formononetin in the extract of Radix Astragali, which were found that the concentration was 0.25 mg mL-1, 0.15 mg mL-1, 0.13 mg mL-1 and 0.30 mg mL-1, respectively.

Amphipathic carbon quantum dots-functionalized silica stationary phase for reversed phase/hydrophilic interaction chromatography. Talanta 2021; 226:122148. Abstract
Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) are considered as good chromatographic separation materials. However, due to the hydrophily of the synthesized CQDs, their applications in HPLC are limited to HILIC for separating strong polar compounds only. In this work, a novel amphipathic CQDs with both hydrophobicity and hydrophily is developed as mixed-mode stationary phase for RPLC/HILIC. To give CQDs certain hydrophobicity, 1,8-diaminooctane is chosen as one of the carbon sources for introducing alkyl chain into CQDs. The amphipathic CQDs modified silica (CQDs/SiO2) stationary phase has typical characteristic of RPLC/HILIC. Both hydrophobic and hydrophilic compounds including alkylbenzenes, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, nucleosides and bases, amino acids, β-adrenoceptor blockers and agonists, sulfonamides, antibiotics and alkaloids obtain satisfactory separation on this CQDs/SiO2 column. 14 nucleosides and bases commonly existing in living organisms achieve good separation on this amphipathic CQDs/SiO2 column within 25 min and the resolutions reach 1.33-13.83 with an average column efficiency of 18,800. The retention mechanism of this novel CQDs/SiO2 column is investigated by linear solvation energy relationship model. It is found that hydrophobic interaction, π-π stacking, hydrogen-bonding and electrostatic interactions are main retention interactions under RPLC mode. This work provides a new approach for synthesis of amphipathic CQDs. Also, it indicates that amphipathic CQDs with versatile functional properties have great prospect in separation science.

Abstract
A silica based hydrophilic stationary phase bonding with 2,3-pyrazinedicarboxylic anhydride and amino groups was synthesized via amino-acid anhydride ring opening reaction. The bonded groups could not only provide hydrophilic interaction, but also electrostatic, π-π and hydrogen bonding interactions, etc. The results of characterization with elemental analysis and solid-state 13C cross-polarization magic-angle-spinning NMR indicated the successful preparation of amino and carboxyl bonded stationary phase named ZAC. The ζ-potential of ZAC stationary phase showed the negatively charge was dominate at pH larger than 3.5. Chromatographic evaluation revealed that ZAC stationary phase behaved well under HILIC mode. It showed different selectivity and retention compared to some typical commercial columns, and it was validated by the separation of chitooligosaccharides, flavonoid glycosides, organic acids and alkaloid samples. Based on the different selectivity between ZAC stationary phase and C18 columns, ZAC stationary phase also showed different selectivity with C18. And it was verified by the separation of Lonicerae Japonicae Flos and Menispermi Rhizoma extracts.

Abstract
Hydrothermally cross-linked polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) immobilized SiO2 stationary phase (CPVP-Sil) was prepared via a green and facile one-pot method which was demonstrated for hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography (HILIC) as well as reverse phase chromatography(RP). A water or organic solvent-insoluble permanent CPVP immobilizing on the silica particle surface can be formed simply by dipping silica particles into PVP solution and low temperature hydrothermal treatment. The cross-linked PVP network coating on SiO2 endow it ring lactam functional groups which exhibited excellent separation ability of polar compounds by a typical HILIC retention mechanism at higher organic solvent contents (>55% ACN) and additionally polyvinyl groups for separation of alkylbenzenes in RP mode(<25% ACN). A high column efficiency of about 7 × 104 plates per meter was obtained for the test catechol compound. Remarkably, the CPVP-Sil packing materials showed good stability in acid (at pH 3.5) or basic (at pH 9.5) conditions, with 5400-fold column volumes and 3500-fold column volumes respectively.

Abstract
Metabolomics systematically studies the changes of metabolites in biological systems in the temporal or spatial dimensions. It is a challenging task for comprehensive analysis of metabolomics because of diverse physicochemical properties and wide concentration distribution of metabolites. Used as enrichment sorbents, chemoselective probes, chromatographic stationary phases, MS ionization matrix, nanomaterials play excellent roles in improving the selectivity, separation performance, detection sensitivity and identification efficiency of metabolites when mass spectrometry is employed as the detection technique. This review summarized the recent development of nanoparticle-assisted metabolites analysis in terms of assisting the pretreatment of biological samples, improving the separation performance and enhancing the MALDI-MS detection.

Abstract
Fluorescence properties of nanoparticles can be influenced by solvent. In this work, carbon dots (CDs) were synthesized in deep eutectic solvent by microwave assisted method. Quantum yield (QY) and size of the synthesized CDs were 41.3% and 2 nm, respectively. N/Cl -doped CDs had excellent sensitivity and selectivity for atorvastatin and detection limit was 0.8 nM. Simple and low-cost synthesis method and excellent sensitivity are advantages of this detection method for atorvastatin. The as-synthesized N/Cl-doped CDs were successfully used to determine atorvastatin in blood serum.

Abstract
A capillary column coated with nanostructured silver coating was fabricated for gas chromatography. The nanostructured silver coating, about 80-120 nm in thickness, was prepared as the stationary phase via silver mirror reaction, and was characterized by SEM and EDS. The column was evaluated using different types of model analytes, including n-alkanes, n-alcohols, benzenes, and Grob mixture. A baseline separation of ten n-alkanes on the silver column (15 m × 0.20 mm i.d.) was achieved within 3.5 min through the main hydrophobic mechanism. A mixture of six n-alcohols, or another mixture containing three butanol isomers and two octanol isomers, was separated well on the column. The column separated some benzenes containing benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, p-xylene, o-xylene, styrene, benzaldehyde, and benzyl alcohol. A Grob mixture containing seven analytes was also separated successfully. Based on a multiple retention mechanism such as hydrophobic, dipole-dipole, and dipole-induced dipole interactions, the silver column achieved a good separation of twelve different types of compounds within 2.5 min. The column presented satisfactory separation repeatability with relative standard deviation of retention time between 0.073% and 0.591%. The results indicate that the silver column is promising for gas chromatographic separation.

Abstract
Graphene quantum dots (GQD) functionalized β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and cellulose silica composites were first prepared and applied in HPLC as chiral stationary phases (CSP) to investigate the effect of GQDs on chiral separation. Through comparing the enantioseparation performance of GQDs functionalized β-CD or cellulose CSPs and unmodified β-CD or cellulose CSPs, we found GQDs enhanced the enantioseparation performance of nature β-CD, β-CD-3,5-dimethylphenylcarbamate derivative and cellulose-3,5-dimethylphenylcarbamate derivative. Molecular modeling was applied to understand and theoretically study the enhancement mechanism of GQDs for enantioseparation. According to molecular simulation results, GQDs provide extra interactions such as hydrophobic, hydrogen bond and π-π interaction when chiral selector interacts with enantiomers, which enhances the chiral recognition ability indirectly. The molecular simulation results showed a good agreement with the experimental results. Our work reveals the enhancement performance of GQDs for chiral separation, it can be expected that GQDs-based chiral composites and chiral GQDs have great prospect in chiral separation and other research fields such as asymmetric synthesis, chiral catalysis, chiral recognition and drug delivery.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Fluorescent carbon-based nanomaterials have promising properties such as biosensing, cell imaging, tracing and drug delivery. However, carbon dots (CDs) with specific inherent biological functions have not been investigated. Ginsenosides are the components with multiple bioactivities found in plants of the genus Panax, which have attracted a lot of attention for their anticancer effect. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this study, we prepared a kind of novel photoluminescent CDs from ginsenoside Re by one-step hydrothermal synthesis method. The conventional methods including transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, HPLC and fluorescence spectrum were used for characterization of CDs. In vitro anticancer effect was investigated by cytotoxicity assay, flow cytometry and Western blot analysis. RESULTS The as-prepared Re-CDs had an average diameter of 4.6±0.6 nm and excellent luminescent properties. Cellular uptake of Re-CDs was facilitated by their tiny nanosize, with evidence of their bright excitation-dependent fluorescent images. Compared with ginsenoside Re, the Re-CDs showed greater inhibition efficiency of cancer cell proliferation, with lower toxicity to the normal cells. The anticancer activity of Re-CDs was suggested to be associated with the generation of large amount of ROS and the caspase-3 related cell apoptosis. CONCLUSION Hopefully, the dual functional Re-CDs, which could both exhibit bioimaging and anticancer effect, are expected to have great potential in future clinical applications.
