Fabrication of novel surface-imprinted magnetic graphene oxide-grafted cellulose nanocrystals for selective extraction and fast adsorption of fluoroquinolones from water

Cellulose-based adsorbents for solid phase extraction and recovery of pharmaceutical residues from water

Cellulose has attracted interest from researchers both in academic and industrial sectors due to its unique structural and physicochemical properties. The ease of surface modification of cellulose by the integration of nanomaterials, magnetic components, metal organic frameworks and polymers has made them a promising adsorbent for solid phase extraction of emerging contaminants, including pharmaceutical residues. This review summarizes, compares, and contrasts different types of cellulose-based adsorbents along with their applications in adsorption, extraction and pre-concentration of pharmaceutical residues in water for subsequent analysis. In addition, a comparison in efficiency of cellulose-based adsorbents and other types of adsorbents that have been used for the extraction of pharmaceuticals in water is presented. From our observation, cellulose-based materials have principally been investigated for the adsorption of pharmaceuticals in water. However, this review aims to shift the focus of researchers to the application of these adsorbents in the effective pre-concentration of pharmaceutical pollutants from water at trace concentrations, for quantification. At the end of the review, the challenges and future perspectives regarding cellulose-based adsorbents are discussed, thus providing an in-depth overview of the current state of the art in cellulose hybrid adsorbents for extraction of pharmaceuticals from water. This is expected to inspire the development of solid phase exraction materials that are efficient, relatively cheap, and prepared in a sustainable way.

Preparation of poly (methacrylic acid)/graphene oxide aerogel as solid-phase extraction adsorbent for extraction and determination of dopamine and tyrosine in urine of patients with depression

Dopamine (DA) and l-tyrosine (l-Tyr) are neurotransmitters involved in various neuropsychiatric disorders. Therefore, it is important to monitor their levels for diagnosis and treatment. In this study, we synthesized poly (methacrylic acid)/graphene oxide aerogels (p(MAA)/GOA) by in situ polymerization and freeze-drying using graphene oxide and methacrylic acid as substrates. Then, the p(MAA)/GOA were applied as solid-phase extraction adsorbents to extract DA and l-Tyr from urine samples, followed by quantification using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The p(MAA)/GOA showed better adsorption performance for DA and l-Tyr than commercial adsorbents, likely as a result of the strong adsorption of the target analytes via π-π and hydrogen bonding interactions. Further, the developed method had good linearity (r > 0.9990) at concentrations of DA and l-Tyr of 0.075-2.0 and 0.75-20.0 μg mL^-1, respectively, as well as a limit of detection of 0.018-0.048 μg mL^-1, limit of quantitation of 0.059-0.161 μg mL^-1, spiked recovery of 91.1-104.0%, and interday precision of 3.58-7.30%.The method was successfully applied to determine DA and l-Tyr in the urine samples of patients suffering from depression, demonstrating its potential for clinical applications.

The adsorption property of in-situ synthesis of MOF in alginate gel for ofloxacin in the wastewater

Although metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are advantageous to the removal of organic pollutants, the general MOFs in powder form is disadvantageous to their practical applications. In-situ MOF synthesis in alginate gel is a good way to fabricate an MOF composite for many applications, which is different from blending MOF particles with polymers. In-situ synthesis of Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-8 (ZIF-8) in alginate gel is in the form of beads with rough wrinkles and has many pores inside. When used as an absorbent, in-situ synthesis of ZIF-8 in alginate gel could remove 97.7 ± 0.9% of ofloxacin from ofloxacin solution and the equilibrium adsorption capacity is up to 160.6 ± 1.3 mg/g. During the adsorption, ofloxacin is first brought into the gel by the solvent exchange and gel microchannel adsorption, and it can then be absorbed by in-situ ZIF-8. Moreover, the adsorption efficiency can reach 85.5% even after four cycles of adsorption. We believe that in-situ synthesis of ZIF-8 in alginate gel will be an appropriate material for the removal of ofloxacin in the wastewater.

Covalent Organic Framework/Polyacrylonitrile Electrospun Nanofiber for Dispersive Solid-Phase Extraction of Trace Quinolones in Food Samples

The extraction of quinolone antibiotics (QAs) is crucial for the environment and human health. In this work, polyacrylonitrile (PAN)/covalent organic framework TpPa–1 nanofiber was prepared by an electrospinning technique and used as an adsorbent for dispersive solid-phase extraction (dSPE) of five QAs in the honey and pork. The morphology and structure of the adsorbent were characterized, and the extraction and desorption conditions for the targeted analytes were optimized. Under the optimal conditions, a sensitive method was developed by using PAN/TpPa–1 nanofiber as an adsorbent coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) for five QAs detection. It offered good linearity in the ranges of 0.5–200 ng·mL⁻¹ for pefloxacin, enrofloxacin, and orbifloxacin, and of 1–200 ng·mL⁻¹ for norfloxacin and sarafloxacin with correlation coefficients above 0.9946. The limits of detection (S/N = 3) of five QAs ranged from 0.03 to 0.133 ng·mL⁻¹. The intra-day and inter-day relative standard deviations of the five QAs with the spiked concentration of 50 ng·mL⁻¹ were 2.8–4.0 and 3.0–8.8, respectively. The recoveries of five QAs in the honey and pork samples were 81.6–119.7%, which proved that the proposed method has great potential for the efficient extraction and determination of QAs in complex samples.

Nanocellulose for Sustainable Water Purification

Nanocelluloses (NC) are nature-based sustainable biomaterials, which not only possess cellulosic properties but also have the important hallmarks of nanomaterials, such as large surface area, versatile reactive sites or functionalities, and scaffolding stability to host inorganic nanoparticles. This class of nanomaterials offers new opportunities for a broad spectrum of applications for clean water production that were once thought impractical. This Review covers substantial discussions based on evaluative judgments of the recent literature and technical advancements in the fields of coagulation/flocculation, adsorption, photocatalysis, and membrane filtration for water decontamination through proper understanding of fundamental knowledge of NC, such as purity, crystallinity, surface chemistry and charge, suspension rheology, morphology, mechanical properties, and film stability. To supplement these, discussions on low-cost and scalable NC extraction, new characterizations including solution small-angle X-ray scattering evaluation, and structure-property relationships of NC are also reviewed. Identifying knowledge gaps and drawing perspectives could generate guidance to overcome uncertainties associated with the adaptation of NC-enabled water purification technologies. Furthermore, the topics of simultaneous removal of multipollutants disposal and proper handling of post/spent NC are discussed. We believe NC-enabled remediation nanomaterials can be integrated into a broad range of water treatments, greatly improving the cost-effectiveness and sustainability of water purification.

Impact of Zr6 Node in a Metal-Organic Framework for Adsorptive Removal of Antibiotics from Water

Quinolone-based antibiotics commonly detected in surface, ground, and drinking water are difficult to remove and therefore pose a threat as organic contaminants of aqueous environment. We performed adsorptive removal of quinolone antibiotics, nalidixic acid and ofloxacin, using a zirconium-porphyrin-based metal-organic framework (MOF), PCN-224. PCN-224 exhibits the highest adsorption capacities for both nalidixic acid and ofloxacin among those reported for MOFs to date. The accessible metal sites of Zr metal nodes are responsible for efficient adsorptive removal. This study offers a pragmatic approach to design MOFs optimized for adsorptive removal of antibiotics.

A new approach for ultra-high adsorption of cationic methylene blue in a Zr-sulfonic-based metal-organic framework

A series of Zr-sulfonic-based metal–organic frameworks have been synthesized by the solvothermal method, namely VNU-17 and VNU-23. Particularly, VNU-17 and VNU-23 adopt the sulfonate group (SO₃⁻) moieties densely packed within their structure, which can efficiently uptake MB⁺ from wastewater. The maximum adsorption capacity for MB⁺ onto VNU-23 is up to 1992 mg g⁻¹ at pH = 7, which is more than five times that of activated carbon and possesses the highest value among all the reported MOF materials. In addition, VNU-23 retains the adsorption uptake of MB for at least five cycles. The adsorption isotherms and kinetic studies reveal that MB⁺ dye adsorption onto VNU-23 fits a Langmuir isotherm and the pseudo second order kinetic model. Furthermore, the ultra-high adsorption capacity of VNU-23 for MB dye can be accounted for by the suitable pore/channel size together with electrostatic attraction and π–π interactions. These results indicate that VNU-23 can be utilized as a promising candidate for removing MB⁺ from an aqueous medium.

Synthesis of nanocomposite material through modification of graphene oxide by nanocellulose

Intensive research of nanocomposites contributes to the development of new materials in the fields of medicine, nanoelectronics, energy, biotechnology, information technology. Therefore, the synthesis of new materials by modifying of graphene oxide (GO) with nanocellulose and the study of its properties are of great interest. In this study synthesized nanocomposite material by modifying of graphene oxide (GO) from activated carbon (BAU-A) in a 1:1 volume ratio with nanocellulose (NC) from hemp stems belonging to the annual plant, and their chemical structure was studied by FTIR and UV-spectroscopy. The results of the study showed the absorption of the etheric bond C = O in the UV spectrum at full length 243 nm. The IR spectrum showed all the new etheric bonds O = C - OH at a wavelength of 1625 cm-1. The average particle sizes of GO was 352 nm and NC was 470 nm in length and 80 nm in width. The SEM analysis indicating the NC as a contact layer between ultralow thicknesses of the GO layers. The XRD analysis indicated GO-NC composite film is a substance comprising GO and NC. According to the results, modification of graphene oxide showed that its scope can be expanded as much as possible.

Construction of natural polymeric imprinted materials and their applications in water treatment: A review

Molecularly imprinted materials (MIMs) have been widely used in various fields, including water treatment, chemical sensing, and biotechnology, because of their specific recognition and high selectivity. MIMs are usually obtained via two successive steps, namely, (1) copolymerization and crosslinking reactions of the preassembled complex of comonomers and a specific target compound (2) and thorough removal of template molecules. Some functional polymers are directly used as supporting materials and functional groups assembled with target compound are provided to simplify the preparation of MIMs. Natural polymers, such as chitosan, cyclodextrin, sodium alginate, starch, cellulose, lignin and their derivatives, are good candidates because of their environmentally friendly properties, low costs, and abundant active functional groups. In this study, different methods for the preparation of natural polymeric MIMs were reviewed in terms of the construction of microscopic binding cavities and macroscopic visible condensed structures with different shapes. Natural polymeric MIMs in water treatment applications, such as adsorption and detection of various pollutants from aqueous solutions, were summarized. Prospects on the development of novel and high-performance natural polymeric MIMs were discussed to overcome the difficulties in their preparation and applications.

Determination of fluoroquinolones in foods using ionic liquid modified Fe3O4/MWCNTs as the adsorbent for magnetic solid phase extraction coupled with HPLC

In this work, a simple and sensitive method based on Fe₃O₄/multi-walled carbon nanotubes/ionic liquid (Fe₃O₄/MWCNTs/IL) as the adsorbent for magnetic solid phase extraction coupled with high performance liquid chromatography was developed for the determination of trace fluoroquinolones in foods. After a simple one-pot solvothermal synthesis, Fe₃O₄/MWCNTs were further modified with an amine-terminated ionic liquid to enhance their dispersibility and extraction capacity. The morphology, structure and magnetic properties of the composite adsorbent were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction spectrometry and vibrating-sample magnetometry. Under the optimized extraction and detection conditions, the studied fluoroquinolones were enriched effectively and separated well and their UV signals were linear to their concentrations in the range of 4-1000 ng mL^-1, with correlation coefficients ranging from 0.9958 to 0.9990. The enrichment factors were 29.1-43.9 fold and the limits of detection were 0.33-0.78 ng mL^-1. The spiked recoveries were 85.4-105.9% for milk and 85.2-103.7% for pork samples, with relative standard deviations of 0.8-5.7%. The developed method provided a fast, sensitive and reliable determination platform for fluoroquinolones in complex real samples.

Cellulose Nanocrystals/Graphene Hybrids-A Promising New Class of Materials for Advanced Applications

With the growth of global fossil-based resource consumption and the environmental concern, there is an urgent need to develop sustainable and environmentally friendly materials, which exhibit promising properties and could maintain an acceptable level of performance to substitute the petroleum-based ones. As elite nanomaterials, cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) derived from natural renewable resources, exhibit excellent physicochemical properties, biodegradability and biocompatibility and have attracted tremendous interest nowadays. Their combination with other nanomaterials such as graphene-based materials (GNM) has been revealed to be useful and generated new hybrid materials with fascinating physicochemical characteristics and performances. In this context, the review presented herein describes the quickly growing field of a new emerging generation of CNC/GNM hybrids, with a focus on strategies for their preparation and most relevant achievements. These hybrids showed great promise in a wide range of applications such as separation, energy storage, electronic, optic, biomedical, catalysis and food packaging. Some basic concepts and general background on the preparation of CNC and GNM as well as their key features are provided ahead.

Fabrication of UiO-66/MIL-101(Fe) binary MOF/carboxylated-GO composite for adsorptive removal of methylene blue dye from aqueous solutions

This study provides a novel composite as an efficient adsorbent of cationic methylene blue dye. UiO-66/MIL-101(Fe) binary metal organic framework (MOF) was fabricated using a solvothermal technique. Additionally, the developed binary MOF was modified with carboxylated graphene oxide (GOCOOH) using a post-synthetic technique. The as-fabricated UiO-66/MIL-101(Fe)-GOCOOH composite was analyzed by FTIR, XRD, SEM, BET, TGA, XPS and zeta potential analysis. The adsorption performance of UiO-66/MIL-101(Fe)-GOCOOH composite was examined for its aptitude to adsorb cationic MB dye using a batch technique. The obtained data revealed that, the developed UiO-66/MIL-101(Fe)-GOCOOH composite exhibited higher adsorption capacity compared to UiO-66/MIL-101(Fe) binary MOF. Adsorption isotherms and kinetic studies revealed that MB dye adsorption onto UiO-66/MIL-101(Fe)-GOCOOH composite fitted a Langmuir isotherm model (q m = 448.71 mg g-1) and both pseudo 1st order and pseudo 2nd order kinetic models. An intra-particle diffusion model showed that the adsorption process occurs through three steps. Besides, thermodynamic data reflected that the adsorption of MB onto UiO-66/MIL-101(Fe)-GOCOOH composite is an endothermic and spontaneous process and the adsorption involves both physisorption and chemisorption interactions. The as-fabricated UiO-66/MIL-101(Fe)-GOCOOH composite exhibited good reusability and can be considered as a promising reusable adsorbent for the treatment of dye-containing industrial effluents with high efficiency.

Preparation of highly fluorinated and boron-rich adsorbent for magnetic solid-phase extraction of fluoroquinolones in water and milk samples

Effective extraction is an indispensable procedure for the sensitive analysis of fluoroquinolones (FQs) in complex samples. According to the molecular properties of FQs, a new highly fluorinated and boron-rich adsorbent (FBA) was synthesized and employed as the extraction phase of magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE). Results revealed that the prepared FBA displayed satisfactory extraction capability for FQs through fluorophilic and B-N coordination interactions. Besides, the synthesized FBA also exhibited strong magnetic responsiveness and good life-span. Under the most favorable conditions, the FBA/MSPE was combined with high-performance liquid chromatography with diode array detection (HPLC-DAD) to sensitively quantify trace levels of FQs in environmental water and milk samples. The developed approach showed good linearity within the studied concentration range, satisfactory precision and low limits of detection (0.0049-0.016 μg/L for water sample and 0.010-0.046 μg/kg for milk sample). In the analysis of target FQs in real samples, the recoveries of different fortified concentrations were in the ranges of 80.1-120% and 78.9-119% for water and milk samples, respectively. The relative standard deviations for reproducibility were all below 11%. The results well evidence that the introduced FBA/MSPE is a promising extraction technology for FQs, and the established FBA/MSPE-HPLC/DAD approach is suitable to measure low concentrations of FQs in water and milk samples.

Adsorption of diclofenac sodium on bilayer amino-functionalized cellulose nanocrystals/chitosan composite

Residual diclofenac sodium (DS) in the environment is harmful to human health. A promising method for DS removal is the use of adsorbents functionalized with amino groups that can form an ionic bond with the carboxyl group of DS at a suitable pH. In this work, a novel composite adsorbent composed of cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) and chitosan (CS) has been synthesized and functionalized by ethylenediamine (ED) in both layers. Characterization methods, including scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, were used to confirm the morphology and synthetic mechanism of the double- amino-functionalized adsorbent. Based on the optimization of adsorption conditions and modeling of the adsorption mechanism, the DS adsorption process on CNC-ED@CS-ED involves chemical adsorption, and the maximum adsorption capacity obtained from the Langmuir model is 444.44 mg/g. CNC-ED@CS-ED exhibits good adsorption capacity and high sustainability; thus, it is a promising composite material for the removal of DS from wastewater.

Determination of fluoroquinolones in food samples by magnetic solid-phase extraction based on a magnetic molecular sieve nanocomposite prior to high-performance liquid chromatography and tandem mass spectrometry

In this study, a magnetic molecular sieve material (Fe₃O₄@MCM-48) was synthesized by a combination of solvothermal and self-assembly methods. The physicochemical properties of the magnetic molecular sieve material were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, magnetic hysteresis loop measurements, transmission electron microscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, N₂ adsorption-desorption analysis, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The as-synthesized nanocomposite showed various advantages, including easy magnetic-assisted separation, high specific surface area, and a highly interwoven and branched mesoporous structure. The Fe₃O₄@MCM-48 nanocomposite was then used as an effective adsorbent material for magnetic solid-phase extraction of fluoroquinolones (FQs) from water samples. The FQs in the extract were determined via liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Adsorption and desorption factors that affected the extraction performance were systematically optimized using spiked purified water samples. Good linearity (with R² > 0.99) was shown by this FQ detection system for FQ concentrations from 5 to 1000 ng L^-1. Moreover, low detection limits (0.7-6.0 ng L^-1) and quantitation limits (2.5-20.0 ng L^-1) and satisfactory repeatability (relative standard deviation < 10%, n = 6) were achieved for water samples. The developed method was also validated for the analysis of FQs in meat and milk samples. Finally, FQs in food and drinking water samples were successfully determined using the developed method. Efficient Adsorption of Pb(II) from Aqueous Solutions by Metal Organic Framework (Zn-BDC) Coated Magnetic Montmorillonite

Composite adsorption materials combine the advantages of various adsorptive materials and compensate for the defects of single adsorbents. Magnetic montmorillonite (MMMT) shows good adsorption properties for Pb(II). In order to further improve the adsorption properties of MMMT, in this work, Zn-BDC, a kind of metal⁻organic framework (MOF), was modified onto the surface of MMMT by in situ polymerization. The composite material MMMT@Zn-BDC was characterized by Zetasizer, SEM, TEM, FTIR, XRD, VSM, and XPS. The influence of adsorption conditions on the adsorption capacity of MMMT@Zn-BDC for Pb(II) was examined, including the adsorbent dosage, pH of Pb(II) solution, initial concentration of Pb(II), and the temperature and adsorption time. Also, the adsorption mechanism was studied. The results of this study show that MMMT@Zn-BDC adsorbs Pb(II) via chemisorption. In addition, MMMT@Zn-BDC exhibits good potential for adsorbing Pb(II), including its high adsorption capacity (724.64 mg/g) and good recyclability.

Fabrication of carboxylated cellulose nanocrystal/sodium alginate hydrogel beads for adsorption of Pb(II) from aqueous solution

Carboxylated cellulose nanocrystal-sodium alginate (CCN-Alg) hydrogel beads were easily prepared through a cross-linking method. The structure and properties of the composite beads were characterized by TEM, FTIR, SEM, XPS, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and zeta potential measurement. A high ratio of 76% of the Pb(II) ion was adsorbed within the first 2h, and the adsorption equilibrium was nearly reached after 3h. The experimental isotherm could be fitted by the Langmuir model, yielding an extreme adsorption capacity of 338.98mgg^-1. The adsorption process followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and thermodynamic analyses confirmed that the adsorption is a spontaneous and endothermic process. Regeneration tests with acid treatment indicated that the CCN-Alg beads performed well in repeated Pb(II) adsorptions, as they could maintain an adsorption capacity of 223.2mgg^-1 after five repeated cycles. These results indicate that these CCN-Alg beads are a potentially effective and sustainable adsorbent for application in wastewater treatment.
