Rapid detection of aflatoxin B1 by dummy template molecularly imprinted polymer capped CdTe quantum dots

A tailored ratiometric fluorescent sensor based on CdTe and MgF2 quantum dots for trace N-ethylpentylone detection

The development of low-cost and highly sensitive ratiometric fluorescence sensor, CdTe@MIPs/MgF2, for N-Ethylpentylone (NEP) detection in wastewater samples is described. In this system, CdTe@MIPs (λex = 370, λem = 570) are employed as the receptor and response unit for NEP, with MgF2 (λex = 370, λem = 470) as the reference signal to enhance stability. Under optimal conditions, the sensor shows fluorescent quenching response at 570 nm to NEP in linear range of 2-200 nM, with LOD of 0.6 nM. The sensor also demonstrates significant selectivity for NEP over other analogues and interferents, making it ideal for practical applications in wastewater analysis. This approach is potentially more cost-effective and sensitive than conventional mass spectrometry in detecting abused substances in sewage. Additionally, the MgF2 fluorescent nano-material was first-ever developed and investigated, which may be significant in future research.

Simultaneous detection of AFB1 and aflD gene by "Y" shaped aptamer fluorescent biosensor based on double quantum dots

The developed method for simultaneous detection of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) and aflD genes can effectively monitor from the source and reduce the safety problems and economic losses caused by the production of aflatoxin, which can be of great significance for food safety regulations. In this paper, we constructed a sensitive and convenient fluorescent biosensor to detect AFB1 and aflD genes simultaneously based on fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) between quantum dots (QDs) and a black hole quenching agent. A stable "Y" shaped aptasensor was employed as the detection platform and a double quantum dot labeled DNA fragment was utilized to be the sensing element in this work. When the targets of AFB1 and aflD genes were presented in the solution, the aptamer in the "Y" shaped probe is specifically recognized by the target. At this time, both Si-carbon quantum dots (Si-CDs) and CdTe QDs are far away from the BHQ1 and BHQ3 to recover the fluorescence. The linear range of the prepared fluorescence simultaneous detection method was as wide as 0.5-500 ng·mL-1 with detection lines of 0.64 ng·mL-1 for AFB1 and 0.5-500 nM with detection lines of 0.75 nM for aflD genes (3σ/k). This fabricated fluorescent biosensor was further validated in real rice flour and corn flour samples, which also achieved good results. The recoveries were calculated by comparing the known and found amounts of AFB1 which ranged from 88.4 to approximately 115.32% in the rice flour samples and 90.7 ~ 102.58% in the corn flour samples. The recoveries of aflD genes ranged from 84.32 to approximately 109.3% in the rice flour samples and 89.48 ~ 100.99% in the corn flour samples. Therefore, the proposed biosensor can significantly improve food safety and quality control through a simple, fast, and sensitive agricultural product monitoring and detection system.

Mycotoxins-Imprinted Polymers: A State-of-the-Art Review

Mycotoxins are toxic metabolites of molds which can contaminate food and beverages. Because of their acute and chronic toxicity, they can have harmful effects when ingested or inhaled, posing severe risks to human health. Contemporary analytical methods have the sensitivity required for contamination detection and quantification, but the direct application of these methods on real samples is not straightforward because of matrix complexity, and clean-up and preconcentration steps are needed, more and more requiring the application of highly selective solid-phase extraction materials. Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) are artificial receptors mimicking the natural antibodies that are increasingly being used as a solid phase in extraction methods where selectivity towards target analytes is mandatory. In this review, the state-of-the-art about molecularly imprinted polymers as solid-phase extraction materials in mycotoxin contamination analysis will be discussed, with particular attention paid to the use of mimic molecules in the synthesis of mycotoxin-imprinted materials, to the application of these materials to food real samples, and to the development of advanced extraction methods involving molecular imprinting technology.

Current Trends in Mycotoxin Detection with Various Types of Biosensors

One of the most important tasks in food safety is to properly manage the investigation of mycotoxin contamination in agricultural products and foods made from them, as well as to prevent its occurrence. Monitoring requires a wide range of analytical methods, from expensive analytical procedures with high-tech instrumentation to significantly cheaper biosensor developments or even single-use assays suitable for on-site monitoring. This review provides a summary of the development directions over approximately a decade and a half, grouped according to the biologically sensitive components used. We provide an overview of the use of antibodies, molecularly imprinted polymers, and aptamers, as well as the diversity of biosensors and their applications within the food industry. We also mention the possibility of determining multiple toxins side by side, which would significantly reduce the time required for the analyses.

The safety of Chinese medicine: A systematic review of endogenous substances and exogenous residues

BACKGROUND

Safety and toxicity have become major challenges in the internationalization of Chinese medicine. Inspite of its wide application, security problems of Chinese medicine still occur from time to time, raising widespread concerns about its safety. Most of the studies either only partially discussed the intrinsic toxicities or extrinsic harmful residues in Chinese medicine, or briefly described detoxification and attenuation methods. It is necessary to systematically discuss Chinese medicine's extrinsic and intrinsic toxic components and corresponding toxicity detoxification or detection methods as a whole.

PURPOSE

This review comprehensively summarizes various toxic components in Chinese medicine from intrinsic and extrinsic. Then the corresponding methods for detoxification or detection of toxicity are highlighted. It is expected to provide a reference for safeguards for developing and using Chinese medicine.

METHODS

A literature search was conducted in the databases, including PubMed, Web of Science,Wan-fang database, and the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI). Keywords used were safety, toxicity, intrinsic toxicities, extrinsic harmful residues, alkaloids, terpene and macrolides, saponins, toxic proteins, toxic crystals, minerals, heavy metals, pesticides, mycotoxins, sulfur dioxide, detoxification, detection, processing (Paozhi), compatibility (Peiwu), Chinese medicine, etc., and combinations of these keywords. All selected articles were from 2006 to 2022, and each was assessed critically for our exclusion criteria. Studies describe the classification of toxic components of Chinese medicine, the toxic effects and mechanisms of Chinese medicine, and the corresponding methods for detoxification or detection of toxicity.

RESULTS

The toxic components of Chinese medicines can be classified as intrinsic toxicities and extrinsic harmful residues. Firstly, we summarized the intrinsic toxicities of Chinese medicine, the adverse effects and toxicity mechanisms caused by these components. Next, we focused on the detoxification or attenuation methods for intrinsic toxicities of Chinese medicine. The other main part discussed the latest progress in analytical strategies for exogenous hazardous substances, including heavy metals, pesticides, and mycotoxins. Beyond reviewing mainstream instrumental methods, we also introduced the emerging biochip, biosensor and immuno-based techniques.

CONCLUSION

In this review, we provide an overall assessment of the recent progress in endogenous toxins and exogenous hazardous substances concerning Chinese medicine, which is expected to render deeper insights into the safety of Chinese medicine.

AFB1 recognition from liver tissue via AFB1 imprinted magnetic nanoparticles

Aflatoxins (AFs) are produced mainly by Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus parasiticus and aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is one of the most toxic aflatoxins with its carcinogenic property. AFB1 recognition from samples is very important and PHEMA based AFB1 imprinted magnetic nanoparticles (magAFB1-MIPs) were synthesized for the selective AFB1 recognition from liver tissue. The AFB1-MIPs were synthesized in different mole ratios and NIPs were synthesized for control. Characterization studies of magAFB1-MIPs and NIPs were carried out by swelling tests, surface area measurements, scanning electron microscopy and particle size analysis. The surface area was found as 117 m²/g and the size of the nanoparticles were found as 483 nm in diameter. The percentage yield of polymerization was calculated as 98 % and the template (AFB1) removal ratio from the magAFB1-MIPs was calculated as 91 %. The maximum adsorbtion capacities were calculated as 427.57 ng g^-1 for magAFB1-MIPs and 44.6 ng g^-1 for magNIPs. Selectivity tests showed that magAFB1-MIPs adsorb AFB1 1.74, 4.40, 2.46 times selective than that of AFB2, AFG1 and AFG2 molecules, respectively. AFB1 removal amount from AFB1 spiked liver tissue was satisfactory and recorded as 10.4 ng g^-1 and 54.8 ng g^-1 for 2 ng g^-1 and 10 ng g^-1 spiked liver tissue samples, respectively. AFB1 adsorption amount decrease was found negligible for 10 consecutive adsorption-desorption repeats in reusability study.

The Status Quo of Criminal Responsibility for Aflatoxin Pollution in China: From the Perspective of Judgment Analysis

With the development of the economy, the food safety problems caused by aflatoxin have become increasingly prominent. With regard to the control of aflatoxin pollution, the Chinese government has promulgated a series of legal documents on food safety related to aflatoxin pollution, such as the formulation of industry standards for allowable limits of aflatoxin and various penalties for violators. Although these measures have achieved good results to some extent, there are still many legal problems. This study reviews the current situation of aflatoxin pollution control in food in China. The court judgment documents related to aflatoxin pollution from January 1st 2014 to January 1st 2020 are investigated to analyze the accountability status of aflatoxin pollution treatment in China. Furthermore, this study mainly cross verified the above problems by means of the literature survey and an organization interview and proposed solutions on the basis of in-depth analysis of their causes. Finally, some suggestions are put forward to solve the problem of aflatoxin pollution accountability in China.

Progress and challenges in sensing of mycotoxins using molecularly imprinted polymers

Mycotoxin is toxic secondary metabolite formed by certain filamentous fungi. This toxic compound can enter the food chain through contamination of food (e.g., by colonization of toxigenic fungi on food). In light of the growing concerns on the health hazards posed by mycotoxins, it is desirable to develop reliable analytical tools for their detection in food products in both sensitive and efficient manner. For this purpose, the potential utility of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) has been explored due to their meritful properties (e.g., large number of tailor-made binding sites, sensitive template molecules, high recognition specificity, and structure predictability). This review addresses the recent advances in the application of MIPs toward the sensing of various mycotoxins (e.g., aflatoxins and patulin) along with their fabrication strategies. Then, performance evaluation is made for various types of MIP- and non-MIP-based sensing platforms built for the listed target mycotoxins in terms of quality assurance such as limit of detection (LOD). Further, the present challenges in the MIP-based sensing application of mycotoxins are discussed along with the future outlook in this research field.

Three-Dimensional Ordered Macroporous Magnetic Inverse Photonic Crystal Microsphere-Based Molecularly Imprinted Polymer for Selective Capture of Aflatoxin B1

Development of an efficient detection method to monitor residual mycotoxins in food is very important to ensure food safety, but the complex food matrix seriously affects the detection sensitivity and accuracy. Here, using a three-dimensional ordered macroporous magnetic inverse photonic crystal microsphere (MPCM) as the supporting material, a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) that can selectively recognize aflatoxin B₁ (AFB₁) was synthesized through the dummy template imprinting strategy. The MPCM@MIP prepared by employing 5,7-dimethoxycoumarin as the template and methacrylic acid as the functional monomer displayed selectivity toward AFB₁ (imprinting factor of 1.5) and could be used as a solid-phase extraction material. By coupling with high-performance liquid chromatography, an analytical method targeting AFB₁ was established and displayed a wide linear range of 5-1000 ng/mL with a low detection limit of 0.4 ng/mL. The method showed a good recovery rate of 73-92% in AFB₁-spiked soy sauce and vinegar samples. Moreover, the MPCM@MIP could be separated from the sample solution easily because of its magnetic performance, displaying a promising future not only in the enrichment of AFB₁ to improve the detection sensitivity and accuracy but also in the removal of AFB₁ from food and environmental samples.

Novel fluorescence sensor for the selective recognition of tetracycline based on molecularly imprinted polymer-capped N-doped carbon dots

A novel fluorescent probe based on molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) coupled with N-doped carbon dots (CDs) was prepared and used for specific recognition and sensitive determination of tetracycline (TC). N-doped CDs were synthesized using citric acid as a carbon source and ethylenediamine as a nitrogen source by a microwave assisted pyrolysis method. The determination conditions such as the solvents, material amount, pH value, and temperature were optimized. The CDs-MIPs have the best quenching on TC in water. The proposed method used for TC determination in milk powder samples had a detection limit of 0.054 μg mL⁻¹ and a wide range of 0.5–30 μg mL⁻¹. Meanwhile, satisfactory recoveries were obtained ranging from 95 to 108%. Oxytetracycline, chlorotetracycline and most of the coexisting substances showed no obvious interference indicating that the CDs-MIP probe exhibited high selectivity due to the presence of imprinted sites. Charge transfer from CDs-MIPs to TC may be through the mechanism of fluorescence quenching. This work gives a feasible strategy for the synthesis of N-doped carbon dot based molecularly imprinted polymers used as a fluorescent sensor in the food analysis field.

A simple fluorometric method for rapid screening of aflatoxins after their extraction by magnetic MOF-808/graphene oxide composite and their discrimination by HPLC

Herein, a high-performance screening tool for the selective and sensitive monitoring of aflatoxins is reported based on their great quenching effect on the blue emission of graphene quantum dots (GQDs). To make a specific determination, a pre-extraction method was also developed using a new nano-sorbent based on the surface-imprinted Zr metal-organic framework on the magnetic graphene oxide (MGO/MOF-808@MIP). The adsorbing efficiency of the prepared composite was remarkably higher than the pristine MOF-808 or bare GO. The presence of GO nanosheets, as well as nanoporous MOF-808 provided a high accessible surface area to form the MIP layer. It provided a great number of MIP sites for high efficient and rapid extraction of aflatoxins. The presence of magnetic nanoparticles in the structure of nanocomposite also facilitated the extraction process using a magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) system. The combination of this specific and high-performance extraction with simple fluorometric detection caused a potent screening tool for aflatoxins. The method was able to monitor the total aflatoxins content of food samples with a linear range of 0.05-8 ng mL^-1, which was more sensitive than the fluorometric system without extraction (5-500 ng mL^-1). More developments were made by the application of a high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method for the discrimination of the extracted aflatoxins. The system showed high sensitivity and selectivity and was able to detect different aflatoxins with an acceptable resolution.

Comparison and recent progress of molecular imprinting technology and dummy template molecular imprinting technology

Molecular imprinting technology for the preparation of polymers with specific molecular recognition function had become one of the current research hotspots. It has been widely applied in chromatographic separation, antibody and receptor mimetics, solid-phase extraction, bio-sensors, and other fields in the last decades. In this study, molecular imprinting technology was summarized from the points of templates and dummy templates, and four typical target analytes were selected to compare the differences between templates and dummy templates. The current status and prospects of molecular imprinting technology were also proposed.

The Existing Methods and Novel Approaches in Mycotoxins' Detection

Mycotoxins represent a wide range of secondary, naturally occurring and practically unavoidable fungal metabolites. They contaminate various agricultural commodities like cereals, maize, peanuts, fruits, and feed at any stage in pre- or post-harvest conditions. Consumption of mycotoxin-contaminated food and feed can cause acute or chronic toxicity in human and animals. The risk that is posed to public health have prompted the need to develop methods of analysis and detection of mycotoxins in food products. Mycotoxins wide range of structural diversity, high chemical stability, and low concentrations in tested samples require robust, effective, and comprehensible detection methods. This review summarizes current methods, such as chromatographic and immunochemical techniques, as well as novel, alternative approaches like biosensors, electronic noses, or molecularly imprinted polymers that have been successfully applied in detection and identification of various mycotoxins in food commodities. In order to highlight the significance of sampling and sample treatment in the analytical process, these steps have been comprehensively described.

Developments in mycotoxin analysis: an update for 2019-2020

This review summarises developments on the analysis of various matrices for mycotoxins published in the period from mid-2019 to mid-2020. Notable developments in all aspects of mycotoxin analysis, from sampling and quality assurance/quality control of analytical results, to the various detection and quantitation technologies ranging from single mycotoxin biosensors to comprehensive instrumental methods are presented and discussed. Aside from sampling and quality control, discussion of this past year’s developments is organised by detection and quantitation technology and covers chromatography with targeted or non-targeted high resolution mass spectrometry, tandem mass spectrometry, detection other than mass spectrometry, biosensors, as well as assays that use alternatives to antibodies. This critical review aims to briefly present the most important recent developments and trends in mycotoxin determination as well as to address limitations of the presented methodologies.

[Recent advances in applications of fragment/dummy molecularly imprinted polymers]

Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) are designed to mimic the specific binding principle of enzymes to substrates or antigens to antibodies, while holding several advantages such as structure predictability, recognition specificity, easy preparation, low cost, high physical robustness, and thermal stability. Therefore, they have been widely applied in many fields including sample preparation (pretreatment), sensing analysis (chemo/biosensors), biomedicine, and environment/food analysis. To date, several strategies were developed for MIPs preparation, aiming to simplify the preparation process and/or improve the properties of the polymers, greatly broadening its usability. The exploration in various advanced imprinting strategies and their combinational use has become a research hotspot in MIPs preparation, among which the fragment imprinting strategy and the dummy template imprinting strategy are especially favored. Fragment imprinting, also called segment imprinting, uses a partial structure of the target molecule as a pseudo-template to prepare MIPs. This strategy is useful to target molecules that are not easy to obtain or that are too large to be used as templates, providing a feasible method for imprinting target analytes that are easy to inactivate or infect, as well as macromolecules that are difficult to imprint. In turn, dummy template imprinting uses molecules with structure, shape, and size similar to the target analytes as templates for imprinting. Because the target is not directly used as a template, this strategy can overcome problems of template leakage, as well as solve target molecule-related difficulties as they can be expensive, infectious, flammable, explosive, or chemically instable. This mini-review compiles information of several articles published in the last four years across ACS, Elsevier, RSC, and other databases, summarizing the most recent advances in the application of fragment/dummy template MIPs (FMIPs/DMIPs). Herein, the biomedical application of FMIPs is mainly addressed as a strategy for the detection of proteins and microorganisms, and the application of FMIPs in the field of food analysis is also explored. In recent years, the imprinting of mammalian cells has made some progress in the application of FMIPs. Mammalian cells, especially cancer cells, overexpress some proteins and sugars, which are good fragment templates. Consequently, the fragment imprinting strategy is widely used in cancer cell imaging, localization, and treatment. Moreover, due to the complicated structure and easy inactivation of some proteins, their MIPs are often prepared by fragment imprinting (also called epitope imprinting). As some microorganisms are infectious, imprinting microorganisms directly can pose a risk; therefore it is safer to also use the fragment imprinting strategy in such cases. The recent application of fragment imprinting strategy in other areas remains scarce. Nonetheless, three studies in the food analysis have explored this possibility. DMIPs are widely used in sample pretreatment and sensing analysis, and they are mainly used as SPE adsorbents for packed SPE, dispersive SPE (DSPE), magnetic SPE (MSPE), and matrix solid phase dispersion (MSPD) extraction. In addition, DMIPs are employed as molecularly imprinted membrane materials. As a result, by virtue of DMIPs, selective extraction and enrichment of target analytes from complicated samples can be achieved. MIP-based sensors can either recognize or transduce, meaning that they can specifically recognize and bind target analytes as well as generate output signals for detection. Because of the high selectivity of MIPs, the use of a dummy template imprinting strategy solves the problem of template leakage in the process of recognition and adsorption, further improving the detection accuracy and sensitivity of the sensor. These features expand the application range of MIP-based sensors. This review briefly overviews the construction and application of chemiluminescence and fluorescence sensors based on DMIPs. Lastly, the advantages and disadvantages, differences, and relationships among the two strategies are summarized. Despite of their potential, four main challenges still remain as major setbacks for the application of FMIPs and DMIPs: (i) the difficulty to select or prepare appropriate fragment templates and dummy templates; (ii) how to ensure that there is almost no difference in the recognition adsorption selectivity between the fragment/dummy template and the original template, so as to ensure optimal recognition specificity; (iii) the use of, environment-friendly reagents to reduce pollution during FMIPs/DMIPs preparation and use to conform with green chemistry requirements; (iv) how to strengthen the industrial and commercial applications of FMIPs and DMIPs. Therefore, significant efforts should be made to develop new imprinting strategies and techniques, as well as to adopt combinational imprinting approaches for FMIPs/DMIPs preparation to expedite the sustainable development and efficient application of FMIPs and DMIPs.

Application of molecularly imprinted polymers for the separation and detection of aflatoxin

Aflatoxins are extremely harmful carcinogens to humans and animals. In recent years, attention has been directed toward the application of molecular imprinting polymers for the separation and detection of aflatoxin. In this review, polymerization methods for the preparation of molecular imprinting polymers for aflatoxin detection, such as lump-bulk polymerization, spherical molecular imprinting polymer synthesis, surface-imprinted polymerization, and electropolymerization, are described. The applications of molecular imprinting polymers in solid-phase extraction, biosensors, and the surface-enhanced Raman detection of aflatoxin are also reviewed in this paper.

The Recent Advances of Fluorescent Sensors Based on Molecularly Imprinted Fluorescent Nanoparticles for Pharmaceutical Analysis

Fluorescent nanoparticles have good chemical stability and photostability, controllable optical properties and larger stokes shift. In light of their designability and functionability, the fluorescent nanoparticles are widely used as the fluorescent probes for diverse applications. To enhance the sensitivity and selectivity, the combination of the fluorescent nanoparticles with the molecularly imprinted polymer, i.e. molecularly imprinted fluorescent nanoparticles (MIFN), was an effective way. The sensor based on MIFN (the MIFN sensor) could be more compatible with the complex sample matrix, which was especially widely adopted in medical and biological analysis. In this mini-review, the construction method, detective mechanism and types of MIFN sensors are elaborated. The current applications of MIFN sensors in pharmaceutical analysis, including pesticides/herbicide, veterinary drugs/drugs residues and human related proteins, are highlighted based on the literature in the recent three years. Finally, the research prospect and development trend of the MIFN sensor are forecasted.

An aptamer affinity column for purification and enrichment of aflatoxin B1 and aflatoxin B2 in agro-products

We have developed an aptamer affinity column (AAC) for the purification and enrichment of trace aflatoxin B₁ (AFB₁) and aflatoxin B₂ (AFB₂) in genuine agro-products through the covalent conjugation of amino modified aptamer and NHS-activated Sepharose. The coupling and working conditions found to be suitable for this AFB-AAC were examined in regard to coupling time (2 min), loading volume (30 mL), and the methanol concentration (< 10%) used in the loading step. The performance of AFB-AAC was then further evaluated in terms of capacity (329.1 ± 13.7 ng for AFB₁ and 162.5 ± 8.9 ng for AFB₂), selectivity (excellent), reusability (twenty-three times for AFB₁ and twelve times for AFB₂), and repeatability (92.7% ± 2.9% for AFB₁ and 71.5% ± 3.4% for AFB₂). Furthermore, the AAC clean-up combined with HPLC-FLD demonstrated excellent linearity over a wide range, good sensitivity with an LOD of 50 pg mL^-1 for AFB₁ and 15 pg mL^-1 for AFB₂, and acceptable recovery with different spiking levels in different matrices. Finally, the AAC was successfully applied to analyte AFB₁ and AFB₂ in four types of agro-products as well as a maize flour reference material, and the results were found to be in accordance with those of commercial IACs. This study provides a reference for the analysis of other trace analytes by merely changing the corresponding aptamer and represents a strong contender for immune affinity columns. Mycotoxins posit serious threats to human and animal health, and numerous efforts have been performed to detect the multiple toxins by a single diagnostic approach. To best of our knowledge, for the first time, we synthesized an aptamer induced "turn on" fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) biosensor using dual-color gold nanoclusters (AuNCs), l-proline, and BSA synthesized AuNCs (Lp-AuNCs and BSA-AuNCs), with WS₂ nanosheet for simultaneous recognition of aflatoxinB₁ (AFB₁) and zearalenone (ZEN) by single excitation. Here, AFB₁ aptamer stabilized blue-emitting AuNCs (AFB₁-apt-Lp-AuNCs) (at 442 nm) and ZEN aptamer functionalized with red-colored AuNCs (ZEN-apt-BSA-AuNCs) (at 650 nm) were employed as an energy donor and WS₂ nanosheet as a fluorescence quencher. With the addition of AFB₁ and ZEN, the change in fluorescence intensity (F.I) was recorded at 442 and 650 nm and can be used for simultaneous recognition with a detection limit of 0.34 pg mL^-1 (R² = 0.9931) and 0.53 pg mL^-1 (R² = 0.9934), respectively. Most importantly, the semiquantitative determination of AFB₁ and ZEN can also be realized through photovisualization. The current approach paves a new way to develop sensitive, selective, and convenient metal nanocluster-based fluorescent "switch-on" probes with potential applications in multipurpose biosensing.
