Abstract
Sedimentation sludge water (SSW), a prominent constituent of wastewater from drinking water treatment plants, has received limited attention in terms of its treatment and utilization likely due to the perceived difficulties associated with managing SSW sludge. This study comprehensively evaluated the water quality of SSW by comparing it to a well-documented wastewater (filter backwash water (FBW)). Furthermore, it investigated the pollutant variations in the SSW during pre-sedimentation process, probed the underlying reaction mechanism, and explored the feasibility of employing a pilot-scale coagulation-sedimentation process for SSW treatment. The levels of most water quality parameters were generally comparable between SSW and FBW. During the pre-sedimentation of SSW, significant removal of turbidity, bacterial counts, and dissolved organic matter (DOM) was observed. The characterization of DOM components, molecular weight distributions, and optical properties revealed that the macromolecular proteinaceous biopolymers and humic acids were preferentially removed. The characterization of particulates indicated that high surface energy, zeta potential, and bridging/adsorption/sedimentation/coagulation capacities in aluminum residuals of SSW, underscoring its potential as a coagulant and promoting the generation and sedimentation of inorganic-organic complexes. The coagulation-sedimentation process could effectively remove pollutants from low-turbidity SSW ([turbidity]0 < 15 NTU). These findings provide valuable insights into the water quality dynamics of SSW during the pre-sedimentation process, facilitating the development of SSW quality management and enhancing its reuse rate.

Abstract
The carbon dots (CDs) with excellent optical properties and their hydrogel complex are of great significance in biomedicine, healthcare and biochemical detection fields. This paper reports the preparation of green-emitting CDs (MA-CDs) through one-step hydrothermal route with citric acid as reducing agent, L-malic acid as carbon source and N-(2-hydroxyethyl)ethylenediamine as nitrogen source. To expand its application in biology, MA-CDs were coupled with vancomycin to obtain multifunctional CDs (VMA-CDs). The prepared VMA-CDs exhibit selective antibacterial behavior to Gram-positive bacteria, and it could be used as a fluorescent probe to selectively label Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). Moreover, thanks to the excellent optical properties of VMA-CDs, it has been used as a fluorescent sensor to detect Au3+ with detection range of 6.50 nM-21.93 μM and detection limit 3.98 nM. By introducing the fluorescence of CDs as the reference signal, and VMA-CDs as a response signal, the hydrogel (V-SP) was prepared and realized the detection of Au3+ in microfluidics with assistance of a smartphone to collect and analyze data.

Abstract
The current study report that the production of carbon quantum dots from Wrightia coccinea (WC) leaves using an eco-friendly, one-pot process. The structural, morphological, and optical characteristics of the CDs made from W. coccinea leaves by hydrothermal treatment at 200 °C for six hours were assessed using a variety of spectroscopic and electron microscopy techniques. The average size of CD was found to be approximately 5 nm using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and the quantum yield of the produced CD was 15.6%. The synthesized CDs demonstrated extraordinary sensing capacity with a detection limit of 0.511 µM for ferric ion detection. The impact of varying pH levels on the fluorescence behavior of CD was thoroughly investigated. The maximum fluorescence intensity was examined at pH 3. Therefore, to detect Fe3+ ions as best as possible, the pH of the entire solution was adjusted to a value of 3. Furthermore, the pH-dependent fluorescence feature of CDs can be exploited by pH-sensitive fluorescence sensors. In the future, this might provide an added advantage for pH-based fluorescence sensor applications.

Abstract
In this study, a novel ratiometric fluorescence probe based on dual-emission carbon dots (CDs) for the sensitive detection of salicylic acid (SA) was constructed for the first time. The dual-emission CDs were synthesized by simple hydrothermal method using tartaric acid (TA) and m-phenylenediamine (mPD) as raw materials. In the presence of SA, the fluorescence intensity of CDs was enhanced at 499 nm, but remained basically unchanged at 439 nm. This phenomenon is caused by the intermolecular hydrogen bond interactions. The concentrations of SA had an excellent linear relationship with CDs' fluorescence intensity ratio (F499/F439) in a range of 1 ∼ 120 and 120 ∼ 240 μM with low detection limits of 0.68 and 1.05 μM. The established ratiometric fluorescent probe is economical, simple and green, and can be used for the effective detection of SA. In addition, the proposed ratiometric fluorescent probe was successfully used to monitor SA in facial mask and toning lotion samples with a satisfactory recovery of 99.7-106.7 %. The results show that the constructed fluorescent probe based on dual-emission CDs has a great potential for the rapid and sensitive analysis of SA in actual samples.

Abstract
Oxidative stress is proven to be a leading factor in a multitude of adverse conditions, from Alzheimer's disease to cancer. Thus, developing effective radical scavenging agents to eliminate reactive oxygen species (ROS) driving many oxidative processes has become critical. In addition to conventional antioxidants, nanoscale structures and metal-organic complexes have recently shown promising potential for radical scavenging. To design an optimal nanoscale ROS scavenging agent, we have synthesized ten types of biocompatible graphene quantum dots (GQDs) augmented with various metal dopants. The radical scavenging abilities of these novel metal-doped GQD structures were, for the first time, assessed via the DPPH, KMnO4, and RHB (Rhodamine B protectant) assays. While all metal-doped GQDs consistently demonstrate antioxidant properties higher than the undoped cores, aluminum-doped GQDs exhibit 60-95% radical scavenging ability of ascorbic acid positive control. Tm-doped GQDs match the radical scavenging properties of ascorbic acid in the KMnO4 assay. All doped GQD structures possess fluorescence imaging capabilities that enable their tracking in vitro, ensuring their successful cellular internalization. Given such multifunctionality, biocompatible doped GQD antioxidants can become prospective candidates for multimodal therapeutics, including the reduction of ROS with concomitant imaging and therapeutic delivery to cancer tumors.

Abstract
The lack of a direct connection between solid edible or medical natural products and bioactive compound profiling is a bottleneck in natural product research and quality control. Here, a novel integrated system, online extraction (OLE)–2,2′-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH)–HPLC−DAD−QTOF-MS, was fabricated to extract, screen, and identify antioxidants from the whole fruit of Citrus aurantium L. var. amara (CAVA, Rutaceae) simply, rapidly, and efficiently. The system consumes less sample (1.0 mg of CAVA powder) and requires a shorter analytical time (45 min for sample extraction, antioxidants screening, separation, and identification). Eight antioxidant flavonoids were screened and identified, and six available flavanones were sensitively, precisely, and accurately quantified. Two major flavanone glycosides, naringin (50.37 ± 0.43 mg/g) and neohesperidin (38.20 ± 0.27 mg/g), exhibit potent DPPH scavenging activities with IC50 values of 111.9 ± 10.06 and 178.55 ± 11.28 μg/mL. A minor flavanone aglycone, hesperitin (0.73 ± 0.06 mg/g), presents stronger DPPH scavenging activity (IC50, 39.07 ± 2.51 μg/mL). Furthermore, density functional theory calculations demonstrated their electron transport ability and chemical reactivity, which confirmed the screened results. The results indicate that the developed OLE–DPPH–HPLC−DAD−QTOF-MS system provides new perspectives for analysis of antioxidants from complex natural products, which also contribute to the quality evaluation of CAVA.

Abstract
Carbon dots (CDs) have two unique advantages: one is ease of synthesis at low price, the other is desirable physical and chemical properties, such as ultra-small size, abundant surface functional groups, nontoxic/low-toxicity, good biocompatibility, excellent antibacterial and antioxidant activities etc. These advantages provide opportunities for the development of new food packaging enhancers and food preservatives. This paper systematically reviews the studies of CDs used to strengthen the physical properties of food packaging, including strengthen mechanical strength, ultraviolet (UV) barrier properties and water barrier properties. It also reviews the researches of CDs used to fabricate active packaging with antioxidant and/or antibacterial properties and intelligent packaging with the capacity of sensing the freshness of food. In addition, it analyzes the antioxidant and antibacterial properties of CDs as preservatives, and discusses the effect of CDs applied as coating agents and nano-level food additives for extension the shelf life of food samples. It also provides a brief review on the security and the release behavior of CDs.

Abstract
A new dual-mode ratiometric fluorescence and colorimetric probe for selective determination of Cu2+ was developed based on blue-emission sulfur quantum dots (SQDs) and yellow-emission carbon quantum dots (CQDs). The fluorescence and absorbance of CQDs increased in the presence of Cu2+ due to the Cu2+ -oxidized o-phenylenediamine group on the surface of the CQDs. Because of the inner filter effect between SQDs and CQDs-Cu2+, the fluorescence response of SQDs decreased following the introduction of Cu2+. Furthermore, in the presence of Cu2+, the dual-mode SQD-CQD probe showed visible color changes under both ultraviolet light and sunlight. Under optimal conditions, the dual-mode probe was used to quantitatively detect Cu2+ with a linear range of 0.1-5.0 μM for ratiometric fluorescence and colorimetry, with a limit of detection of about 31 nM and 47 nM, respectively. Finally, the dual-mode probe was used for the determination of Cu2+ in practical samples to expand the practical application, and the difference between ratiometric fluorescence and colorimetric methods was compared. The recovery results confirmed the high accuracy of the dual-mode probe, showing that it has immense potential for sensitive and selective detection of Cu2+ in practical samples.
