Task-relevant cognitive and motor functions are prioritized during prolonged speed-accuracy motor task performance

Validation of a Lithuanian-Language Version of the Brunel Mood Scale: The BRUMS-LTU

Mood can be considered as a diffuse and global emotional state, with both valence and arousal characteristics, that is not directed towards a specific object. Investigation of moods in specific language and cultural contexts relies on the availability of appropriately validated measures. The current study involved the translation and validation of the Brunel Mood Scale (BRUMS) from English into Lithuanian. The 24-item, 6-factor scale, referred to as the BRUMS-LTU, was administered to 746 participants who were fluent in Lithuanian (nmen = 199 (26.7%), nwomen = 547 (73.3%); age range = 17-78 years, M = 41.8 years, SD = 11.4 years). Confirmatory factor analysis showed an adequate fit of the hypothesized measurement model to the data (CFI  =  0.954, TLI  = 0 .944, RMSEA  = 0 .060 [CI 0.056, 0.064], SRMR = 0.070) and multi-sample analysis supported configural, metric, scalar, and residual invariance across genders. Concurrent measures (i.e., Perceived Stress Scale, Big Five Personality Test) correlated with subscale scores in line with theoretical predictions, supporting both convergent and divergent validity. Internal consistency coefficients of the six subscales were satisfactory. Mood scores varied significantly by gender, with men generally reporting more positive moods than women. Findings support the adequacy of the psychometric properties of the BRUMS-LTU. Thus, the scale can be recommended for use in further psychological studies of mood in Lithuania and may also be useful for applied practitioners.

Visually guided movement with increasing time-on-task: Differential effects on movement preparation and movement execution

Top-down cognitive control seems to be sensitive to the detrimental effects of fatigue induced by time-on-task (ToT). The planning and preparation of the motor responses may be especially vulnerable to ToT. Yet, effects of ToT specific to the different phases of movements have received little attention. Therefore, in three experiments, we assessed the effect of ToT on a mouse-pointing task. In Experiment 1, there were 16 possible target positions with variable movement directions. In Experiment 2, the layout of the targets was simplified. In Experiment 3, using cuing conditions, we examined whether the effects of ToT on movement preparation and execution were caused by an increased orientation deficit or decreased phasic alertness. In each experiment, initiation of movement (preparatory phase) became slower, movement execution became faster and overall response time remained constant with increasing ToT. There was, however, no significant within-person association between the preparatory and execution phases. In Experiments 1 and 2, we found a decreasing movement time/movement error ratio, suggesting a more impulsive execution of the pointing movement. In addition, ToT was also accompanied with imprecise movement execution as indicated by the increased errors, mainly in Experiment 2. The results of Experiment 3 indicated that ToT did not induce orientation and phasic alerting deficits but rather was accompanied by decreased tonic alertness.

Confounding effects of caffeine on neuroplasticity induced by transcranial alternating current stimulation and paired associative stimulation

OBJECTIVE

We examined the effects of caffeine, time of day, and alertness fluctuation on plasticity effects after transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) or 25 ms paired associative stimulation (PAS25) in caffeine-naïve and caffeine-adapted subjects.

METHODS

In two randomised, double-blinded, cross-over or placebo-controlled (caffeine) studies, we measured sixty subjects in eight sessions (n = 30, Male: Female = 1:1 in each study).

RESULTS

We found caffeine increased motor cortex excitability in caffeine naïve subjects. The aftereffects in caffeine naïve subjects were enhanced and prolonged when combined with PAS 25. Caffeine also increased alertness and the motor evoked potentials (MEPs) were reduced under light deprivation in caffeine consumers both with and without caffeine. In caffeine consumers, the time of day had no effect on tACS-induced plasticity.

CONCLUSIONS

We conclude that caffeine should be avoided or controlled as confounding factor for brain stimulation protocols. It is also important to keep the brightness constant in all sessions and study groups should not be mixed with caffeine-naïve and caffeine consuming participants.

SIGNIFICANCE

Caffeine is one of the confounding factors in the plasticity induction studies and it induces different excitability effects in caffeine-naïve and caffeine-adapted subjects. Forty-eight-hour fasting declines mental flexibility but improves balance in overweight and obese older women

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a 48-h fast on evoked stress, mood, and cognitive and motor functions in overweight and obese older women. Eleven women (body mass index >25 kg/m²) aged 63-80 years were tested under two randomly allocated conditions: 48-h zero-calorie diet with water provided ad libitum and 48-h usual diet. Autonomic function, cortisol levels, mood state, cognitive performance, visuomotor coordination, motor speed, and balance were evaluated before and after each diet. Fasting increased (P < 0.05) cortisol levels, whereas no changes were observed in heart rate and its variability. Fasting increased (P < 0.05) fatigue, prolonged (P < 0.05) reaction time in the two-choice reaction time test and decreased (P < 0.05) the velocity vector of the center of pressure with eyes closed, whereas no changes in performance were observed in the pursuit tracking and finger tapping tests. Thus, although a 48-h fast resulted in greater hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis activity in overweight and obese older women, autonomic nervous system activity was not affected. Fasting increased fatigue and decreased mental flexibility, but improved balance.

A 10-week yoga practice has no effect on cognition, but improves balance and motor learning by attenuating brain-derived neurotrophic factor levels in older adults

Despite studies investigating the effect of yoga on cognitive and motor functioning in older adults, the effect on dual-task performance and motor learning and the specific mechanisms underlying the positive effect of yoga remain unclear. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate the effects of yoga on cognition, balance under single- and dual-task conditions, and motor learning. The potential role of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in induced improvement was also explored. Participants aged 60-79 years were randomized to either a control group (n = 15) or a yoga group (n = 18) for a 10-week period. The yoga group received 90-min duration yoga classes two times per week. Changes in cognition, balance under single- and dual-task conditions, and learning fast and accurate reaching movements were assessed. Yoga practice decreased (P < 0.05) the velocity vector of the center of pressure under single- and dual-task conditions, whereas no changes in cognitive performance were observed. Although reaction and movement times during learning were decreased in both groups (P < 0.05), a faster reaction time (P < 0.05) and shorter movement time (P < 0.05) were observed in the yoga group than in the control group. Significant moderate relationships (P < 0.05) between changes in BDNF levels and functional improvements were observed. Thus, 10 weeks of yoga practice resulted in improved balance and learning in the speed-accuracy motor task that were mediated by increased BDNF levels, but had no impact on cognition in older adults.

"Two sides of the same coin": constant motor learning speeds up, whereas variable motor learning stabilizes, speed-accuracy movements

PURPOSE

The aim of this study was to determine the time course of the trade-off between speed and accuracy, intraindividual variability, and movement transfer and retention (4 weeks after learning) of speed-accuracy tasks.

METHODS

The participants in this study were healthy adults randomly divided into three groups (control versus constant versus variable). They were aged 19-24 years, and 30 (15 men and 15 women) were in each group. Participants had to perform various tasks with the right dominant hand: (a) simple reaction test; (b) maximal velocity measurement; and (c) a speed-accuracy task.

RESULTS

During constant and variable learning, the trade-off in a speed-accuracy task in specific situations shifted toward improved motor planning and motor execution speed, and to reduced intraindividual variability. However, during variable learning, the maximal velocity and variability of motor planning time did not change. Constant learning effectively transferred into variable tasks in terms of reaction time, average velocity and maximal velocity, and these effects were greater than those associated with variable learning. However, the effects of constant learning did not transfer fully into the performance variability of variable movements. Variable learning effectively transferred into constant tasks for the coefficient of variation of the path of movement, average velocity, maximal velocity and reaction time. The retention effect depended neither on learning nor task specificity (constant versus variable tasks).

CONCLUSION

Constant learning speeds up but does not stabilize speed-accuracy movements in variable tasks; whereas, variable learning stabilizes but does not speed up speed-accuracy movements in constant tasks.

The Effect of Combined Aerobic Exercise and Calorie Restriction on Mood, Cognition, and Motor Behavior in Overweight and Obese Women

BACKGROUND

The benefits of weight loss programs on mood, cognitive, and motor behavior are largely limited to those of calorie restriction or exercise alone. Our aim was to investigate the effect of combined calorie restriction and aerobic exercise intervention on mood, brain activity, and cognitive and motor behavior in overweight and obese women.

METHODS

Participants aged 36-56 years were randomized to either a control or an experimental group (aerobic exercise + 12.5% energy intake reduction) for a 6-month period. Changes in brain-derived neurotrophic factor levels, mood, prefrontal cortex activity, cognitive and motor performance were assessed.

RESULTS

Confusion and depression increased in the control group (P < .05), whereas tension decreased in the experimental group (P < .05). Brain-derived neurotrophic factor level and learning of a speed-accuracy task remained unchanged. Although prefrontal cortex activity and executive functions were not affected, the reaction time of visual scanning and associative learning were improved in the experimental group (P < .05). An improvement in reaction time during the speed-accuracy task was observed (P < .05).

CONCLUSION

Combined calorie restriction and aerobic exercise intervention improved the psychosocial state, had little impact on cognition, and no effect on brain activity and learning of the speed-accuracy task.

Absence of differences in the learning rate of a speed-accuracy movement task between women patients with mild and major depression and healthy adult women

This study tested the hypothesis that women patients with depression should perform movements more slowly and with greater variability, and their learning rate should be lower compared with age-matched healthy adult women. Three groups of adult women subjects (aged 33-37 years, women patients with mild and major depression and healthy adult women, n = 20 in each group) performed five series (20 repetitions in each series) of a speed-accuracy hand-movement task (SAT). The mean movement speed (V_a) of the SAT was lower and more stable (the coefficient of variation of V_a was lower) in women patients with major depression compared with those with minor depression and healthy adult women during the first series of the SAT. Only the V_a and movement accuracy (path of movement, S) of the SAT varied significantly in the five learning series regardless of the subject group (healthy women subjects and women patients with minor and major depression). The intraindividual variability of reaction time, V_a, maximal movement velocity to the target (tV_max), time to tV_max, and S did not change significantly in any of the groups. Our research data showed that although women patients with depression performed speed-accuracy movements more slowly, the stability of the performance of their movements and their learning rate did not differ from those of age-matched healthy adult women.

A Systematic Review of Integrated Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) Studies

Background: The capacity for TMS to elicit neural activity and manipulate cortical excitability has created significant expectation regarding its use in both cognitive and clinical neuroscience. However, the absence of an ability to quantify stimulation effects, particularly outside of the motor cortex, has led clinicians and researchers to pair noninvasive brain stimulation with noninvasive neuroimaging techniques. fNIRS, as an optical and wearable neuroimaging technique, is an ideal candidate for integrated use with TMS. Together, TMS+fNIRS may offer a hybrid alternative to "blind" stimulation to assess NIBS in therapy and research. Objective: In this systematic review, the current body of research into the transient and prolonged effects of TMS on fNIRS-based cortical hemodynamic measures while at rest and during tasks are discussed. Additionally, studies investigating the relation of fNIRS to measures of cortical excitability as produced by TMS-evoked Motor-Evoked-Potential (MEP) are evaluated. The aim of this review is to outline the integrated use of TMS+fNIRS and consolidate findings related to use of fNIRS to monitor changes attributed to TMS and the relationship of fNIRS to cortical excitability itself. Methods: Key terms were searched in PubMed and Web-of-Science to identify studies investigating the use of both fNIRS and TMS. Works from Google-Scholar and referenced works in identified papers were also assessed for relevance. All published experimental studies using both fNIRS and TMS techniques in the study methodology were included. Results: A combined literature search of neuroimaging and neurostimulation studies identified 53 papers detailing the joint use of fNIRS and TMS. 22/53 investigated the immediate effects of TMS at rest in the DLPFC and M1 as measured by fNIRS. 21/22 studies reported a significant effect in [HbO] for 40/54 stimulation conditions with 14 resulting an increase and 26 in a decrease. While 15/22 studies also reported [HbR], only 5/37 conditions were significant. Task effects of fNIRS+TMS were detailed in 16 studies, including 10 with clinical populations. Most studies only reported significant changes in [HbO] related measures. Studies comparing fNIRS to changes in MEP-measured cortical excitability suggest that fNIRS measures may be spatially more diffuse but share similar traits. Conclusion: This review summarizes the progress in the development of this emerging hybrid neuroimaging & neurostimulation methodology and its applications. Despite encouraging progress and novel applications, a lack of replicated works, along with highly disparate methodological approaches, highlight the need for further controlled studies. Interpretation of current research directions, technical challenges of TMS+fNIRS, and recommendations regarding future works are discussed.

Prefrontal Cortex Activity Predicts Mental Fatigue in Young and Elderly Men During a 2 h "Go/NoGo" Task

Background: Although the effects of mental fatigue on cognitive–motor function and psychological state in young adults are well-documented, its effects in the elderly are not completely understood. The aim of this study was to estimate the effect of prolonged cognitive load on the indicators of psychological, cognitive, and motor functions.

Methods: Fifteen young and 15 elderly men were asked to perform a 2 h “Go/NoGo” task. Psychological state (mood and motivation), cognitive (prefrontal cortex activity and cognitive performance), and motor (motor cortex excitability and grip strength) functions were measured before and after the task. During the 2 h task, both groups had a significantly similar increase in the number of “Incorrect NoGo” errors. Only in young men reaction time (RT) of “Incorrect NoGo” and intraindividual variability of RT of “Incorrect NoGo” significantly increased during task. After the task, handgrip strength decreased for the young men, whereas latency of motor evoked potentials prolonged both groups. Nevertheless, both groups indicated that they felt fatigue after the 2 h task; we observed that mental demand increased, whereas intrinsic motivation and mood decreased only in young men. Prolonged task decreased the switching/rest ratio of oxygenated hemoglobin for the young and the elderly men; however, greater for elderly than young men. Interestingly, the more the prefrontal cortex was activated before the 2 h task during the switching task, the fewer of “Incorrect NoGo” errors made by the young men and the greater the number of errors made by the elderly men.

Conclusion: Because of the greater mental load and (possibly) greater activation of prefrontal cortex during the 2 h “Go/NoGo” task, there was greater mental and neuromuscular performance fatigue in young men than in elderly men.
