Abstract
This review explores the health-promoting properties of pigmented rice, focusing on its unique ability to promote slow starch digestion and improve blood sugar regulation. While the impact of slow starch digestibility is widely acknowledged, our current understanding of the underlying mechanisms remains insufficient. Therefore, this review aims to bridge the gap by examining the intricate factors and mechanisms that contribute to the low starch hydrolysis of pigmented rice to better understand how it promotes slower starch digestion and improves blood sugar regulation. This paves the way for future advancements in utilizing pigmented rice by enhancing our understanding of the mechanisms behind low starch hydrolysis. These may include the development of food products aimed at mitigating hyperglycemic symptoms and reducing the risk of diabetes. This research broadens our understanding of pigmented rice and facilitates the development of strategies to promote health outcomes by incorporating pigmented rice into our diets.

Abstract
The red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) is an important farming species in China and there is a high degree of overlap between the main crayfish production areas and areas contaminated with the heavy metal lead (Pb), thus putting crayfish farming at potential risk of Pb contamination. To assess the toxic effects of Pb on crayfish, in this study they were exposed to different concentrations of Pb (0, 0.1, 1, 10, 50 mg/L) for 72 h, and 0.1 mg/L represents the level of Pb in the contaminated water. Histomorphology and activities of antioxidant or immune-related enzymes suggest that the damage of Pb to the hepatopancreas and intestine was dose- and time-dependent, with the intestine being more sensitive to Pb than the hepatopancreas. Notably, after a short period (24 h) of stress at low concentrations (0.1 mg/L) of Pb, the malondialdehyde (MDA) content and antioxidant enzymes such as catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) in the intestine of crayfish showed significant changes, indicating that low concentrations of Pb were also highly detrimental to crayfish. High-throughput sequencing of the intestinal microbial community indicated that Pb exposure led to a disturbance in the relative abundance of intestinal bacteria, increasing the abundance of pathogenic bacteria (Bosea, Cloacibacterium, Legionella spp.) and decreasing the abundance of potentially beneficial bacteria (Chitinibacter, Chitinilyticum, Paracoccus, Microbacterium, Demequina, and Acinetobacter spp.). In conclusion, Pb damages the hepatopancreas and intestinal barrier of crayfish, leading to the destruction of their anti-stress ability and immune response, and at the same time disrupts the homeostasis of intestinal microbes, resulting in adverse effects on the gut. This study contributed to the assessment of the ecotoxicity of the heavy metal Pb to the crustacean aquatic animals.

Abstract
Food waste is a major issue, with one-third of food wasted yearly. This study aimed to produce sustainably the industrial enzyme alpha-amylase using discarded bread waste. Brown (BBW) and white bread waste (WBW) were tested as growth substrates using solid-state and submerged fermentation. The biosynthesized α- amylase is applied to treat starch-heavy industrial wastewater and for textile desizing. Bacillus amyloliquificiens showed the highest starch hydrolysis and enzyme activity on solid and liquid media. α-amylase production by B. amyloliquificiens was optimized via a one-factor-at-a-time evaluation of production parameters. Optimal production occurred by submerged fermentation of BBW inoculated with 2% B. amyloliquificiens at 37 °C and 200rpm for 24 h, reaching 695.2 U/mL α- amylase. The crude enzyme was immobilized on calcium alginate beads with 96.6% efficiency and kept 88.5% activity after 20 reuses, enhancing stability. A Box-Behnken design (BOX) assessed variable interactions. Response surface methodology (RSM) generated a quadratic model and analysis of variance (ANOVA analysis) fitting experimental starch hydrolysis data. Optimal conditions were pH 9, 45 °C, 70% starch, and 27.5 U/mL enzyme incubated for 15 min of contact time, with a high R2 of 0.83. ANOVA confirmed the enzyme's alkaliphilic and thermophilic nature. Using enzyme concentrations ranging from 10.9 to 695.1 U/mL, the enzyme desized textiles in 15 min at pH 9.0 and 45 °C with 96.3% efficiency. Overall, the optimized α- amylase from bread waste has industrial potential for sustainable starch processing.

Abstract
The extensive use of petroleum-based non-biodegradable plastics for various applications has led to global concerns regarding the severe environmental issues associated with them. However, biodegradable plastics are emerging as green alternatives to petroleum-based non-biodegradable plastics. Biodegradable plastics, which include bio-based and petroleum-based biodegradable polymers, exhibit advantageous properties such as renewability, biocompatibility, and non-toxicity. Furthermore, certain biodegradable plastics are compatible with existing recycling streams intended for conventional plastics and are biodegradable in controlled and/or predicted environments. Recycling biodegradable plastics before their end-of-life (EOL) degradation further enhances their sustainability and reduces their carbon footprint. Since the production of biodegradable plastic is increasing and these materials will coexist with conventional plastics for many years to come, it is essential to identify the optimal recycling options for each of the most prevalent biodegradable plastics. The substitution of virgin biodegradable plastics by their recyclates leads to higher savings in the primary energy demand and reduces global warming impact. This review covers the current state of the mechanical, chemical, and bio-recycling of post-industrial and post-consumer waste of biodegradable plastics and their related composites. The effects of recycling on the chemical structure and thermomechanical properties of biodegradable plastics are also reported. Additionally, the improvement of biodegradable plastics by blending them with other polymers and nanoparticles is comprehensively discussed. Finally, the status of bioplastic usage, life cycle assessment, EOL management, bioplastic market, and the challenges associated with the recyclability of biodegradable plastics are addressed. This review gives comprehensive insights into the recycling processes that may be employed for the recycling of biodegradable plastics.

Abstract
Potato dry rot disease caused by multiple Fusarium species is a major global concern in potato production. In this investigation, the tubers of cultivars Kufri Jyoti and Kufri Frysona were artificially inoculated with an individual or combined inoculum of Fusarium sambucinum and Fusarium solani. Fusarium sambucinum caused a significantly higher lesion development (p < 0.01) than Fusarium solani, irrespective of cultivars. The combined inoculum of both the Fusarium species caused significantly higher rot development (p < 0.005) in inoculated tubers. Analyses of starch and amylose content revealed that individual or mixed infection of fungi caused a significant reduction (p < 0.005) in these parameters compared to healthy tubers. The increased starch digestibility due to fungal infection caused a higher glycemic index and glycemic load. The resistant starch also deteriorated in the infected potato tubers as compared to the control. Kufri Jyoti showed a higher starch and amylose content reduction in response to the treatments compared to Kufri Frysona. The correlation analysis demonstrated a negative correlation in lesion diameter and rot volume with starch and amylose content (p < -0.80). However, the glycemic index and resistant starch were positively correlated with lesion development. Altogether, these findings highlight the progressive deterioration of quality parameters, which will be a critical concern for processing industry stakeholders and consumers.

Abstract
Efficient inactivation of microbial α-amylases (EC 3.2.1.1) can be a challenge in starch systems as the presence of starch has been shown to enhance the stability of the enzymes. In this study, commonly used inactivation methods, including multistep washing and pH adjustment, were assessed for their efficiency in inactivating different α-amylases in presence of raw potato starch. Furthermore, an effective approach for irreversible α-amylase inactivation using sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) is demonstrated. Regarding inactivation by extreme pH, the activity of five different α-amylases was either eliminated or significantly reduced at pH 1.5 and 12. However, treatment at extreme pH for 5 min, followed by incubation at pH 6.5, resulted in hydrolysis yields of 42–816% relative to controls that had not been subjected to extreme pH. “Inactivation” by multistep washing with water, ethanol, and acetone followed by gelatinization as preparation for analysis gave significant starch hydrolysis compared to samples inactivated with NaOCl before the wash. This indicates that the further starch degradation observed in samples subjected to washing only took place during the subsequent gelatinization. The current study demonstrates the importance of inactivation methodology in α-amylase-mediated raw starch depolymerization and provides a method for efficient α-amylase inactivation in starch systems.

Abstract
Exploring new raw starch-hydrolyzing α-amylases and understanding their biochemical characteristics are important for the utilization of starch-rich materials in bio-industry. In this work, the biochemical characteristics of a novel raw starch-degrading α-amylase (HL11 Amy) from Roseateles terrae HL11 was firstly reported. Evolutionary analysis revealed that HL11Amy was classified into glycoside hydrolase family 13 subfamily 32 (GH13_32). It contains four protein domains consisting of domain A, domain B, domain C and carbohydrate-binding module 20 (CMB20). The enzyme optimally worked at 50 °C, pH 4.0 with a specific activity of 6270 U/mg protein and 1030 raw starch-degrading (RSD) U/mg protein against soluble starch. Remarkably, HL11Amy exhibited activity toward both raw and gelatinized forms of various substrates, with the highest catalytic efficiency (kcat/Km) on starch from rice, followed by potato and cassava, respectively. HL11Amy effectively hydrolyzed cassava pulp (CP) hydrolysis, with a reducing sugar yield of 736 and 183 mg/g starch from gelatinized and raw CP, equivalent to 72% and 18% conversion based on starch content in the substrate, respectively. These demonstrated that HL11Amy represents a promising raw starch-degrading enzyme with potential applications in starch modification and cassava pulp saccharification.

The Effect of Endophytic Bacteria Bacillus subtilis and Salicylic Acid on Some Resistance and Quality Traits of Stored Solanum tuberosum L. Tubers Infected with Fusarium Dry Rot. Abstract
The effect of endophytic Bacillus subtilis (strains 10-4, 26D) and their compositions withsalicylic acid (SA) on some resistance and quality traits of stored potatoes infected with Fusariumdry rot were studied. The experiments were carried out on hydroponically grown Solanumtuberosum L. tubers that were infected before storage with Fusarium oxysporum and coated with B.subtilis 10-4, 26D with and without exogenous SA, and then stored for six months. It has been shownthat 10-4, 26D, 10-4 + SA, and 26D + SA reduced in different levels (up to 30-50%) the incidence ofF. oxysporum-caused dry rot (with the highest effect for 10-4 + SA). SA notably enhanced the positiveeffect of 10-4, while for 26D, such an effect was not observed. All of the tested treatments increasedamylase (AMY) and AMY inhibitors activity in infected tubers, while decreased Fusarium-inducedprotease activity (except in the case of 10-4 + SA, which promoted a slight increase) was revealed.10-4, 26D, and their compositions with SA decreased (in different degrees) the pathogen-causedlipid peroxidation, proline, and reducing sugars accumulation in potatoes after long-term storage.It was also discovered 10-4 and 26D, regardless of SA presence, decrease pathogen-inducedglycoalkaloids α-Solanine and α-Chaconine accumulation and preserved increased levels of starchand total dry matter in infected stored potatoes. The findings indicate endophytic B. subtilis and itscompositions with SA is a promising eco-friendly and bio-safe approach to cope with postharvestdecays of potato during long-term storage; however, when developing preparations-compositionsit should take into account the strain-dependent manner of B. subtilis action together with SA.

Abstract
The adsorption-desorption behavior of flax fibers (FFs) is reported in this paper. FFs are a potential desiccant material for air-to-air energy wheels, which transfer heat and moisture in building heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. The raw FFs sample was subjected to physical modification, followed by complementary material characterization to understand the relationship between its structure and its moisture uptake performance. The surface and textural properties of the modified FFs were determined by gas adsorption (N2, H2O) and gravimetric liquid water swelling studies and further supported by spectroscopic (infrared and scanning electron microscopy) results. A FF-coated small-scale energy exchanger was used to determine the moisture transfer (or latent effectiveness; εl) using single-step and cyclic testing. The FF-coated exchanger had εl values of ∼10 and 40% greater compared to similar exchangers coated with starch particles (SPs) and silica gel (SG) reported in a previous study. The enhanced surface and textural properties, along with the complex compositional structure of FFs and its greater propensity to swell in water, account for the improved performance over SPs. Thus, FFs offer an alternative low-cost, environment-friendly, and sustainable biodesiccant for air-to-air energy wheel applications in buildings. The current study contributes to an improved understanding of the structure-function relationship of biodesiccants for such energy wheel applications.

Abstract
The term "starch-binding domain" (SBD) has been applied to a domain within an amylolytic enzyme that gave the enzyme the ability to bind onto raw, i.e. thermally untreated, granular starch. An SBD is a special case of a carbohydrate-binding domain, which in general, is a structurally and functionally independent protein module exhibiting no enzymatic activity but possessing potential to target the catalytic domain to the carbohydrate substrate to accommodate it and process it at the active site. As so-called families, SBDs together with other carbohydrate-binding modules (CBMs) have become an integral part of the CAZy database (http://www.cazy.org/). The first two well-described SBDs, i.e. the C-terminal Aspergillus-type and the N-terminal Rhizopus-type have been assigned the families CBM20 and CBM21, respectively. Currently, among the 85 established CBM families in CAZy, fifteen can be considered as families having SBD functional characteristics: CBM20, 21, 25, 26, 34, 41, 45, 48, 53, 58, 68, 69, 74, 82 and 83. All known SBDs, with the exception of the extra long CBM74, were recognized as a module consisting of approximately 100 residues, adopting a β-sandwich fold and possessing at least one carbohydrate-binding site. The present review aims to deliver and describe: (i) the SBD identification in different amylolytic and related enzymes (e.g., CAZy GH families) as well as in other relevant enzymes and proteins (e.g., laforin, the β-subunit of AMPK, and others); (ii) information on the position in the polypeptide chain and the number of SBD copies and their CBM family affiliation (if appropriate); (iii) structure/function studies of SBDs with a special focus on solved tertiary structures, in particular, as complexes with α-glucan ligands; and (iv) the evolutionary relationships of SBDs in a tree common to all SBD CBM families (except for the extra long CBM74). Finally, some special cases and novel potential SBDs are also introduced.

Abstract
This study reports on the adsorption (dehumidification)-desorption (humidification) behavior of cetylpyridinium bromide (CPB) coated starch particles (SPs), denoted as SP-CPB, as a potential desiccant material for air-to-air energy exchangers. CPB is a cationic surfactant with antibacterial activity that can be used to modify the surface properties of SPs, especially at variable CPB loading levels (SP-CPB0.5, SP-CPB2.5, and SP-CPB5.0, where the numeric suffix represents the synthetic loading level of CPB in mM). The SP-CPB0.5 sample displayed optimal surface area and pore structure properties that was selected for water sorption isotherm studies at 25 °C. The CPB-coated SPs sample (SP-CPB0.5) showed an improved water vapor uptake capacity compared to unmodified starch (SPs) and other desiccant systems such as high amylose starch (HAS15) and silica gel (SG13). Single-step and cyclic water vapor sorption tests were conducted using a small-scale exchanger coated with SP-CPB0.5. The calculated latent effectiveness values obtained from direct measurements using cyclic tests (65.4 ± 2%) agree closely with the estimated latent effectiveness from single-step tests (64.6 ± 2%) at controlled operating conditions. Compared to HAS15- and SG13-coated exchangers, the SP-CPB0.5-coated exchanger performed much better at controlled operating conditions, along with improved longevity due to the CPB surface coating. The presence of CPB did not attenuate the uptake properties of native SPs. Latent effectiveness of SP-CPB0.5-coated exchanger was enhanced (5-30% higher) over that of the SG13- or HAS15-coated exchangers, according to the wheel angular speed. This study reports on a novel and sustainable SP-CPB0.5 material as a promising desiccant coating with tunable uptake and surface properties with potential utility in air-to-air energy exchangers for ventilation systems.

Abstract
β-Amylase from un-germinated seeds of peanut (Arachis hypogaea) was purified to apparent electrophoretic homogeneity with final purification fold of 205 and specific activity of 361μmol/min/mg protein. The enzyme was purified employing simple purification techniques for biochemical characterization. The purified enzyme was identified as β-amylase with Mr of 31kDa. The enzyme displayed its optimum catalytic activity at pH5.0 and 60°C with activation energy of 4.5kcal/mol and Q10 1.2. The enzyme displayed Km and Vmax values, for soluble potato starch of 1.28mg/mL and 363.63μmol/min/mg, respectively. Thermal inactivation of β-amylase at 65°C resulted into first-order kinetics with rate constant 0.0126min-1 and t½ 55min. The enzyme was observed to act on native granular potato starch, which could minimize the high cost occurring from solubilization of starch in industries. Enzyme fractions scavenge 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical, indicating its antioxidative nature. In addition, the purified β-amylase was successfully utilized for the improvement of antioxidant potential of wheat. These findings suggest that β-amylase from peanuts have potential application in food and pharmaceutical industries.

Abstract
AbstractStarch is an important food ingredient and a substrate for the production of many industrial products. Biological and industrial processes involve hydrolysis of raw starch, such as digestion by humans and animals, starch metabolism in plants, and industrial starch conversion for obtaining glucose, fructose and maltose syrup or bioethanol. Raw starch degrading α-amylases (RSDA) can directly degrade raw starch below the gelatinization temperature of starch. Knowledge of the structures and properties of starch and RSDA has increased significantly in recent years. Understanding the relationships between structural peculiarities and properties of RSDA is a prerequisite for efficient application in different aspects of human benefit from health to the industry. This review summarizes recent advances on RSDA research with emphasizes on representatives of glycoside hydrolase family GH13. Definite understanding of raw starch digesting ability is yet to come with accumulating structural and functional studies of RSDA.

Abstract
The bacterium Microbacterium aurum strain B8.A degrades granular starches, using the multi-domain MaAmyA α-amylase to initiate granule degradation through pore formation. This paper reports the characterization of the M. aurum B8.A MaAmyB enzyme, a second starch-acting enzyme with multiple FNIII and CBM25 domains. MaAmyB was characterized as an α-glucan 1,4-α-maltohexaosidase with the ability to subsequently hydrolyze maltohexaose to maltose through the release of glucose. MaAmyB also displays exo-activity with a double blocked PNPG7 substrate, releasing PNP. In M. aurum B8.A, MaAmyB may contribute to degradation of starch granules by rapidly hydrolyzing the helical and linear starch chains that become exposed after pore formation by MaAmyA. Bioinformatics analysis showed that MaAmyB represents a novel GH13 subfamily, designated GH13_42, currently with 165 members, all in Gram-positive soil dwelling bacteria, mostly Streptomyces. All members have an unusually large catalytic domain (AB-regions), due to three insertions compared to established α-amylases, and an aberrant C-region, which has only 30% identity to established GH13 C-regions. Most GH13_42 members have three N-terminal domains (2 CBM25 and 1 FNIII). This is unusual as starch binding domains are commonly found at the C-termini of α-amylases. The evolution of the multi-domain M. aurum B8.A MaAmyA and MaAmyB enzymes is discussed.

Abstract
Cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) wild relatives remain a largely untapped potential for genetic improvement. However, the domestication syndrome phenomena from wild species to cultivated cassava remain poorly understood. The analysis of leaf anatomy and photosynthetic activity showed significantly different between cassava cultivars SC205, SC8 and wild relative M. esculenta ssp. Flabellifolia (W14). The dry matter, starch and amylose contents in the storage roots of cassava cultivars were significantly more than that in wild species. In order to further reveal the differences in photosynthesis and starch accumulation of cultivars and wild species, the globally differential proteins between cassava SC205, SC8 and W14 were analyzed using 2-DE in combination with MALDI-TOF tandem mass spectrometry. A total of 175 and 304 proteins in leaves and storage roots were identified, respectively. Of these, 122 and 127 common proteins in leaves and storage roots were detected in SC205, SC8 and W14, respectively. There were 11, 2 and 2 unique proteins in leaves, as well as 58, 9 and 12 unique proteins in storage roots for W14, SC205 and SC8, respectively, indicating proteomic changes in leaves and storage roots between cultivated cassava and its wild relatives. These proteins and their differential regulation across plants of contrasting leaf morphology, leaf anatomy pattern and photosynthetic related parameters and starch content could contribute to the footprinting of cassava domestication syndrome. We conclude that these global protein data would be of great value to detect the key gene groups related to cassava selection in the domestication syndrome phenomena.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Starch is a very abundant and renewable carbohydrate and is an important feedstock for industrial applications. The conventional starch liquefaction and saccharification processes are energy-intensive, complicated, and not environmentally friendly. Raw starch-digesting glucoamylases are capable of directly hydrolyzing raw starch to glucose at low temperatures, which significantly simplifies processing and reduces the cost of producing starch-based products. RESULTS A novel raw starch-digesting glucoamylase PoGA15A with high enzymatic activity was purified from Penicillium oxalicum GXU20 and biochemically characterized. The PoGA15A enzyme had a molecular weight of 75.4 kDa, and was most active at pH 4.5 and 65 °C. The enzyme showed remarkably broad pH stability (pH 2.0-10.5) and substrate specificity, and was able to degrade various types of raw starches at 40 °C. Its adsorption ability for different raw starches was consistent with its degrading capacities for the corresponding substrate. The cDNA encoding the enzyme was cloned and heterologously expressed in Pichia pastoris. The recombinant enzyme could quickly and efficiently hydrolyze different concentrations of raw corn and cassava flours (50, 100, and 150 g/L) with the addition of α-amylase at 40 °C. Furthermore, when used in the simultaneous saccharification and fermentation of 150 g/L raw flours to ethanol with the addition of α-amylase, the ethanol yield reached 61.0 g/L with a high fermentation efficiency of 95.1 % after 48 h when raw corn flour was used as the substrate. An ethanol yield of 57.0 g/L and 93.5 % of fermentation efficiency were achieved with raw cassava flour after 36 h. In addition, the starch-binding domain deletion analysis revealed that SBD plays a very important role in raw starch hydrolysis by the enzyme PoGA15A. CONCLUSIONS A novel raw starch-digesting glucoamylase from P. oxalicum, with high enzymatic activity, was biochemically, molecularly, and genetically identified. Its efficient hydrolysis of raw starches and its high efficiency during the direct conversion of raw corn and cassava flours via simultaneous saccharification and fermentation to ethanol suggests that the enzyme has a number of potential applications in industrial starch processing and starch-based ethanol production.

Abstract
The bacterium Microbacterium aurum strain B8.A, originally isolated from a potato plant wastewater facility, is able to degrade different types of starch granules. Here we report the characterization of an unusually large, multidomain M. aurum B8.A α-amylase enzyme (MaAmyA). MaAmyA is a 1,417-amino-acid (aa) protein with a predicted molecular mass of 148 kDa. Sequence analysis of MaAmyA showed that its catalytic core is a family GH13_32 α-amylase with the typical ABC domain structure, followed by a fibronectin (FNIII) domain, two carbohydrate binding modules (CBM25), and another three FNIII domains. Recombinant expression and purification yielded an enzyme with the ability to degrade wheat and potato starch granules by introducing pores. Characterization of various truncated mutants of MaAmyA revealed a direct relationship between the presence of CBM25 domains and the ability of MaAmyA to form pores in starch granules, while the FNIII domains most likely function as stable linkers. At the C terminus, MaAmyA carries a 300-aa domain which is uniquely associated with large multidomain amylases; its function remains to be elucidated. We concluded that M. aurum B8.A employs a multidomain enzyme system to initiate degradation of starch granules via pore formation.

Abstract
The effects of granule swelling on enzymatic saccharification of normal corn starch by granular starch hydrolyzing enzyme were investigated. After swelling, Km values for the saccharification of granular starch decreased compared with native granular starch, indicating that granule swelling caused granular starch hydrolyzing enzyme to have higher affinity for starch granules. The partial swelling of starch granules enhanced starch saccharification. Furthermore, the enhancement at an earlier stage of enzymatic reaction was much more significant than that at later stages. For granular starch pretreated at 67.5 °C for 30 min, conversions to glucose after incubation with the enzyme at 32 °C for 4 and 24 h were approximately 3-fold and 26% higher than for native granular starch, respectively. As a result, proper heat pretreatment of granular starch before simultaneous saccharification and fermentation has great potential to facilitate industrial production of ethanol by use of granular starch hydrolyzing enzyme.

Abstract
AIMS The aims were to isolate a raw starch-degrading α-amylase gene baqA from Bacillus aquimaris MKSC 6.2, and to characterize the gene product through in silico study and its expression in Escherichia coli. METHODS AND RESULTS A 1539 complete open reading frame of a starch-degrading α-amylase gene baqA from B. aquimaris MKSC 6·2 has been determined by employing PCR and inverse PCR techniques. Bioinformatics analysis revealed that B. aquimaris MKSC 6.2 α-amylase (BaqA) has no starch-binding domain, and together with a few putative α-amylases from bacilli may establish a novel GH13 subfamily most closely related to GH13_1. Two consecutive tryptophans (Trp201 and Trp202, BaqA numbering) were identified as a sequence fingerprint of this novel GH13 subfamily. Escherichia coli cells produced the recombinant BaqA protein as inclusion bodies. The refolded recombinant BaqA protein degraded raw cassava and corn starches, but exhibited no activity with soluble starch. CONCLUSIONS A novel raw starch-degrading B. aquimaris MKSC 6.2 α-amylase BaqA is proposed to be a member of new GH13 subfamily. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY This study has contributed to the overall knowledge and understanding of amylolytic enzymes that are able to bind and digest raw starch directly.
