Control with uncertain data of socially structured compartmental epidemic models

Modeling opinion polarization on social media: Application to Covid-19 vaccination hesitancy in Italy

The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic reminded us how vaccination can be a divisive topic on which the public conversation is permeated by misleading claims, and thoughts tend to polarize, especially on online social networks. In this work, motivated by recent natural language processing techniques to systematically extract and quantify opinions from text messages, we present a differential framework for bivariate opinion formation dynamics that is coupled with a compartmental model for fake news dissemination. Thanks to a mean-field analysis we demonstrate that the resulting Fokker-Planck system permits to reproduce bimodal distributions of opinions as observed in polarization dynamics. The model is then applied to sentiment analysis data from social media platforms in Italy, in order to analyze the evolution of opinions about Covid-19 vaccination. We show through numerical simulations that the model is capable to describe correctly the formation of the bimodal opinion structure observed in the vaccine-hesitant dataset, which is witness of the known polarization effects that happen within closed online communities.

A Statistical Mechanics Approach to Describe Cell Reorientation Under Stretch

Experiments show that when a monolayer of cells cultured on an elastic substratum is subject to a cyclic stretch, cells tend to reorient either perpendicularly or at an oblique angle with respect to the main stretching direction. Due to stochastic effects, however, the distribution of angles achieved by the cells is broader and, experimentally, histograms over the interval [Formula: see text] are usually reported. Here we will determine the evolution and the stationary state of probability density functions describing the statistical distribution of the orientations of the cells using Fokker-Planck equations derived from microscopic rules for describing the reorientation process of the cell. As a first attempt, we shall use a stochastic differential equation related to a very general elastic energy that the cell tries to minimize and, we will show that the results of the time integration and of the stationary state of the related forward Fokker-Planck equation compare very well with experimental results obtained by different researchers. Then, in order to model more accurately the microscopic process of cell reorientation and to shed light on the mechanisms performed by cells that are subject to cyclic stretch, we consider discrete in time random processes that allow to recover Fokker-Planck equations through classical tools of kinetic theory. In particular, we shall introduce a model of reorientation as a function of the rotation angle as a result of an optimal control problem. Also in this latter case the results match very well with experiments.

Kinetic Models for Epidemic Dynamics in the Presence of Opinion Polarization

Understanding the impact of collective social phenomena in epidemic dynamics is a crucial task to effectively contain the disease spread. In this work, we build a mathematical description for assessing the interplay between opinion polarization and the evolution of a disease. The proposed kinetic approach describes the evolution of aggregate quantities characterizing the agents belonging to epidemiologically relevant states and will show that the spread of the disease is closely related to consensus dynamics distribution in which opinion polarization may emerge. In the present modelling framework, microscopic consensus formation dynamics can be linked to macroscopic epidemic trends to trigger the collective adherence to protective measures. We conduct numerical investigations which confirm the ability of the model to describe different phenomena related to the spread of an epidemic.

The SAITS epidemic spreading model and its combinational optimal suppression control

In this paper, an SAITS epidemic model based on a single layer static network is proposed and investigated. This model considers a combinational suppression control strategy to suppress the spread of epidemics, which includes transferring more individuals to compartments with low infection rate and with high recovery rate. The basic reproduction number of this model is calculated and the disease-free and endemic equilibrium points are discussed. An optimal control problem is formulated to minimize the number of infections with limited resources. The suppression control strategy is investigated and a general expression for the optimal solution is given based on the Pontryagin's principle of extreme value. The validity of the theoretical results is verified by numerical simulations and Monte Carlo simulations.

Infectious Disease Spreading Fought by Multiple Vaccines Having a Prescribed Time Effect

We propose a framework for the description of the effects of vaccinations on the spreading of an epidemic disease. Different vaccines can be dosed, each providing different immunization times and immunization levels. Differences due to individuals' ages are accounted for through the introduction of either a continuous age structure or a discrete set of age classes. Extensions to gender differences or to distinguish fragile individuals can also be considered. Within this setting, vaccination strategies can be simulated, tested and compared, as is explicitly described through numerical integrations.

Uncertainty quantification for ecological models with random parameters

There is often considerable uncertainty in parameters in ecological models. This uncertainty can be incorporated into models by treating parameters as random variables with distributions, rather than fixed quantities. Recent advances in uncertainty quantification methods, such as polynomial chaos approaches, allow for the analysis of models with random parameters. We introduce these methods with a motivating case study of sea ice algal blooms in heterogeneous environments. We compare Monte Carlo methods with polynomial chaos techniques to help understand the dynamics of an algal bloom model with random parameters. Modelling key parameters in the algal bloom model as random variables changes the timing, intensity and overall productivity of the modelled bloom. The computational efficiency of polynomial chaos methods provides a promising avenue for the broader inclusion of parametric uncertainty in ecological models, leading to improved model predictions and synthesis between models and data.

An epidemic-economic model for COVID-19

In this paper, we propose a new mathematical model to study the epidemic and economic consequences of COVID-19, with a focus on the interaction between the disease transmission, the pandemic management, and the economic growth. We consider both the symptomatic and asymptomatic infections and incorporate the effectiveness of disease control into the respective transmission rates. Meanwhile, the progression of the pandemic and the evolution of the susceptible, infectious and recovered population groups directly impact the mitigation and economic development levels. We fit this model to the reported COVID-19 cases and unemployment rates in the US state of Tennessee, as a demonstration of a real-world application of the modeling framework.

An efficient nonstandard computer method to solve a compartmental epidemiological model for COVID-19 with vaccination and population migration

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE

In this manuscript, we consider a compartmental model to describe the dynamics of propagation of an infectious disease in a human population. The population considers the presence of susceptible, exposed, asymptomatic and symptomatic infected, quarantined, recovered and vaccinated individuals. In turn, the mathematical model considers various mechanisms of interaction between the sub-populations in addition to population migration.

METHODS

The steady-state solutions for the disease-free and endemic scenarios are calculated, and the local stability of the equilibium solutions is determined using linear analysis, Descartes' rule of signs and the Routh-Hurwitz criterion. We demonstrate rigorously the existence and uniqueness of non-negative solutions for the mathematical model, and we prove that the system has no periodic solutions using Dulac's criterion. To solve this system, a nonstandard finite-difference method is proposed.

RESULTS

As the main results, we show that the computer method presented in this work is uniquely solvable, and that it preserves the non-negativity of initial approximations. Moreover, the steady-state solutions of the continuous model are also constant solutions of the numerical scheme, and the stability properties of those solutions are likewise preserved in the discrete scenario. Furthermore, we establish the consistency of the scheme and, using a discrete form of Gronwall's inequality, we prove theoretically the stability and the convergence properties of the scheme. For convenience, a Matlab program of our method is provided in the appendix.

CONCLUSIONS

The computer method presented in this work is a nonstandard scheme with multiple dynamical and numerical properties. Most of those properties are thoroughly confirmed using computer simulations. Its easy implementation make this numerical approach a useful tool in the investigation on the propagation of infectious diseases. From the theoretical point of view, the present work is one of the few papers in which a nonstandard scheme is fully and rigorously analyzed not only for the dynamical properties, but also for consistently, stability and convergence.

Optimal control of epidemic spreading in the presence of social heterogeneity

The spread of COVID-19 has been thwarted in most countries through non-pharmaceutical interventions. In particular, the most effective measures in this direction have been the stay-at-home and closure strategies of businesses and schools. However, population-wide lockdowns are far from being optimal, carrying heavy economic consequences. Therefore, there is nowadays a strong interest in designing more efficient restrictions. In this work, starting from a recent kinetic-type model which takes into account the heterogeneity described by the social contact of individuals, we analyse the effects of introducing an optimal control strategy into the system, to limit selectively the mean number of contacts and reduce consequently the number of infected cases. Thanks to a data-driven approach, we show that this new mathematical model permits us to assess the effects of the social limitations. Finally, using the model introduced here and starting from the available data, we show the effectiveness of the proposed selective measures to dampen the epidemic trends. From agent-based models to the macroscopic description of fake-news spread: the role of competence in data-driven applications

Fake news spreading, with the aim of manipulating individuals' perceptions of facts, is now recognized as a major problem in many democratic societies. Yet, to date, little has been understood about how fake news spreads on social networks, what the influence of the education level of individuals is, when fake news is effective in influencing public opinion, and what interventions might be successful in mitigating their effect. In this paper, starting from the recently introduced kinetic multi-agent model with competence by the first two authors, we propose to derive reduced-order models through the notion of social closure in the mean-field approximation that has its roots in the classical hydrodynamic closure of kinetic theory. This approach allows to obtain simplified models in which the competence and learning of the agents maintain their role in the dynamics and, at the same time, the structure of such models is more suitable to be interfaced with data-driven applications. Examples of different Twitter-based test cases are described and discussed.

Optimization strategies of human mobility during the COVID-19 pandemic: A review

The impact of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic is being felt in all spheres of our lives - cutting across the boundaries of nation, wealth, religions or race. From the time of the first detection of infection among the public, the virus spread though almost all the countries in the world in a short period of time. With humans as the carrier of the virus, the spreading process necessarily depends on the their mobility after being infected. Not only in the primary spreading process, but also in the subsequent spreading of the mutant variants, human mobility plays a central role in the dynamics. Therefore, on one hand travel restrictions of varying degree were imposed and are still being imposed, by various countries both nationally and internationally. On the other hand, these restrictions have severe fall outs in businesses and livelihood in general. Therefore, it is an optimization process, exercised on a global scale, with multiple changing variables. Here we review the techniques and their effects on optimization or proposed optimizations of human mobility in different scales, carried out by data driven, machine learning and model approaches.

Spatial spread of COVID-19 outbreak in Italy using multiscale kinetic transport equations with uncertainty

In this paper we introduce a space-dependent multiscale model to describe the spatial spread of an infectious disease under uncertain data with particular interest in simulating the onset of the COVID-19 epidemic in Italy. While virus transmission is ruled by a SEIAR type compartmental model, within our approach the population is given by a sum of commuters moving on a extra-urban scale and non commuters interacting only on the smaller urban scale. A transport dynamics of the commuter population at large spatial scales, based on kinetic equations, is coupled with a diffusion model for non commuters at the urban scale. Thanks to a suitable scaling limit, the kinetic transport model used to describe the dynamics of commuters, within a given urban area coincides with the diffusion equations that characterize the movement of non-commuting individuals. Because of the high uncertainty in the data reported in the early phase of the epidemic, the presence of random inputs in both the initial data and the epidemic parameters is included in the model. A robust numerical method is designed to deal with the presence of multiple scales and the uncertainty quantification process. In our simulations, we considered a realistic geographical domain, describing the Lombardy region, in which the size of the cities, the number of infected individuals, the average number of daily commuters moving from one city to another, and the epidemic aspects are taken into account through a calibration of the model parameters based on the actual available data. The results show that the model is able to describe correctly the main features of the spatial expansion of the first wave of COVID-19 in northern Italy.

Using mobility data in the design of optimal lockdown strategies for the COVID-19 pandemic

A mathematical model for the COVID-19 pandemic spread, which integrates age-structured Susceptible-Exposed-Infected-Recovered-Deceased dynamics with real mobile phone data accounting for the population mobility, is presented. The dynamical model adjustment is performed via Approximate Bayesian Computation. Optimal lockdown and exit strategies are determined based on nonlinear model predictive control, constrained to public-health and socio-economic factors. Through an extensive computational validation of the methodology, it is shown that it is possible to compute robust exit strategies with realistic reduced mobility values to inform public policy making, and we exemplify the applicability of the methodology using datasets from England and France.

In many countries, the COVID-19 pandemic has revealed a gap between public policy making and the use of advanced technological tools to inform such a process. In the big data era, decisions concerning the implementation of quarantines and travel restrictions are still being taken based on incomplete public health data, despite the myriad of information our society provides in real time, such as mobility data, commuting network structures, and financial patterns, to name a few. To advance towards an effective data-driven, quantitative policy making, we propose a computational framework where a predictive epidemiological model is fitted by feeding both public health and Google mobility data. The resulting model is then used as a basis for designing mobility reduction strategies which are optimised taking into account both the healthcare system capacity, and the economic impact of an extended lockdown. For the COVID-19 pandemic in England and France, we show that it is possible to design lockdown policies allowing a partial return to workplaces and schools, while maintaining the epidemic under control.

Kinetic models for epidemic dynamics with social heterogeneity

We introduce a mathematical description of the impact of the number of daily contacts in the spread of infectious diseases by integrating an epidemiological dynamics with a kinetic modeling of population-based contacts. The kinetic description leads to study the evolution over time of Boltzmann-type equations describing the number densities of social contacts of susceptible, infected and recovered individuals, whose proportions are driven by a classical SIR-type compartmental model in epidemiology. Explicit calculations show that the spread of the disease is closely related to moments of the contact distribution. Furthermore, the kinetic model allows to clarify how a selective control can be assumed to achieve a minimal lockdown strategy by only reducing individuals undergoing a very large number of daily contacts. We conduct numerical simulations which confirm the ability of the model to describe different phenomena characteristic of the rapid spread of an epidemic. Motivated by the COVID-19 pandemic, a last part is dedicated to fit numerical solutions of the proposed model with infection data coming from different European countries.

Universal features of epidemic models under social distancing guidelines

Social distancing as a form of nonpharmaceutical intervention has been enacted in many countries as a form of mitigating the spread of COVID-19. There has been a large interest in mathematical modeling to aid in the prediction of both the total infected population and virus-related deaths, as well as to aid government agencies in decision making. As the virus continues to spread, there are both economic and sociological incentives to minimize time spent with strict distancing mandates enforced, and/or to adopt periodically relaxed distancing protocols, which allow for scheduled economic activity. The main objective of this study is to reduce the disease burden in a population, here measured as the peak of the infected population, while simultaneously minimizing the length of time the population is socially distanced, utilizing both a single period of social distancing as well as periodic relaxation. We derive a linear relationship among the optimal start time and duration of a single interval of social distancing from an approximation of the classic epidemic SIR model. Furthermore, we see a sharp phase transition region in start times for a single pulse of distancing, where the peak of the infected population changes rapidly; notably, this transition occurs well before one would intuitively expect. By numerical investigation of more sophisticated epidemiological models designed specifically to describe the COVID-19 pandemic, we see that all share remarkably similar dynamic characteristics when contact rates are subject to periodic or one-shot changes, and hence lead us to conclude that these features are universal in epidemic models. On the other hand, the nonlinearity of epidemic models leads to non-monotone behavior of the peak of infected population under periodic relaxation of social distancing policies. This observation led us to hypothesize that an additional single interval social distancing at a proper time can significantly decrease the infected peak of periodic policies, and we verified this improvement numerically. While synchronous quarantine and social distancing mandates across populations effectively minimize the spread of an epidemic over the world, relaxation decisions should not be enacted at the same time for different populations.
