Study of formation constant, thermodynamics and β-ionone release characteristic of β-ionone-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin inclusion complex

Preparation of β-ionone microcapsules by gelatin/pectin complex coacervation

β-ionone has a unique violet odor and good biological activity, which is an essential fragrance component and potential anticancer drug. In this paper, β-ionone was encapsulated using complex coacervation of gelatin and pectin, followed by cross-linking with glutaraldehyde. The pH value, wall material concentration, core-wall ratio, homogenization conditions, and curing agent content were investigated in the single-factor experiments. For example, the encapsulation efficiency increased with the homogenization speed, which reached a relatively high value at 13000 r/min for 5 min. The gelatin/pectin ratio (3:1, w/w) and pH value (4.23) significantly affected the size, shape, and encapsulation efficiency of the microcapsule. The fluorescence microscope and SEM were used to characterize the morphology of the microcapsules, in which the microcapsule has a stable morphology, uniform size, and spherical multinuclear structure. FTIR measurements confirmed the electrostatic interactions between gelatin and pectin during complex coacervation. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) revealed that the microcapsules could maintain good thermal stability over 260 °C. The release rate of β-ionone microcapsule was only 20.6 % after 30 days at the low temperature of 4 °C. These findings provide an effective carrier to deliver flavors like β-ionone and could be useful in the fields of daily chemicals and textiles.

Preparation of aromatic β-cyclodextrin nano/microcapsules and corresponding aromatic textiles: A review

Fragrance finishing of textiles is receiving substantial interest, with aromatherapy being one of the most popular aspects of personal health care. However, the longevity of aroma on textiles and presence after subsequent launderings are major concerns for aromatic textiles directly loaded with essential oils. These drawbacks can be weakened by incorporating essential oil-complexed β-cyclodextrins (β-CDs) onto various textiles. This article reviews various preparation methods of aromatic β-cyclodextrin nano/microcapsules, as well as a wide variety of methods for the preparation of aromatic textiles based on them before and after forming, proposing future trends in preparation processes. The review also covers the complexation of β-CDs with essential oils, and the application of aromatic textiles based on β-CD nano/microcapsules. Systematic research on the preparation of aromatic textiles facilitates the realization of green and simple industrialized large-scale production, providing needed application potential in the fields of various functional materials.

Encapsulation of hydroxycitronellal in β-cyclodextrin and the characteristics of the inclusion complex

Hydroxycitronellal has been widely used in foods, beverages, perfumery and cosmetics. It can also be used to treat anxiety. The major drawbacks regarding the use of hydroxycitronellal are related to water insolubility, volatility, instability, and sensitization. To overcome these concerns, β-cyclodextrin was adopted as wall material to encapsulate hydroxycitronellal in this work. Hydroxycitronellal-β-cyclodextrin inclusion complex was prepared and the product was characterized. The interaction of hydroxycitronellal and β-cyclodextrin, and the assembly of hydroxycitronellal-β-cyclodextrin inclusion complex were investigated by molecular simulation (MM). The results showed that hydroxycitronellal loading capacity was 8.5%. The thermal stability and lastingness of hydroxycitronellal were improved by the formation of the inclusion complex. The minimum binding energy was –151.2 kJ/mol. Among the perpendicular, staggered parallel and ideally parallel orientation of the inclusion complexes, the minimum energy value was found for the staggered parallel arrangement. These basic data are useful to understand the interaction between hydroxycitronellal and β-cyclodextrin.

Condensation of acrylonitrile and aryl acetonitrile: construction of α-amino-β-cyano cyclohexene skeletons

A representative condensation of acrylonitrile and aryl acetonitrile has been reported for the synthesis of α-amino-β-cyano cyclohexene. The reaction was carried out mildly in an open environment at room temperature. The scope and versatility of the method have been demonstrated with 20 examples, containing highly active ethynyl groups. Further applications for 4-aminopyrimidine compounds were performed. A mechanism was proposed, involving Michael additions between acrylonitrile and aryl acetonitriles as well as intramolecular condensation.

Fabrication and characterization of ethyl acetate-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin inclusion complex

Flavors play crucial role in food industry. Ethyl acetate, as probably one of the most used of all flavor chemicals by volume, is used widely in many industries. However, ethyl acetate is not too stable and can be slowly decomposed by moisture. Furthermore, ethyl acetate is a volatile liquid insoluble in water and it does not last long enough. In order to solve these problems, hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin was used as wall material to encapsulate ethyl acetate in this work. The product was characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and thermalgravimetric analysis (TGA). The results showed that the peaks at 1,744 and 1,056 cm^-1 in the FTIR spectrum of ethyl acetate disappeared in the FTIR spectrum of ethyl acetate-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin inclusion complex. After the encapsulation of ethyl acetate, the O-H and C-H stretching absorption of hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin changed. The TGA results showed that from 77°C to 292°C ethyl acetate is released from the ethyl acetate-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin inclusion complex in temperatures far beyond ethyl acetate 77°C boiling point. This phenomenon confirmed that the lastingness and thermal stability of ethyl acetate can be improved by the formation of an inclusion complex. The loading capacity of ethyl acetate was 4.86 ± 0.08% and ethyl acetate:hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin stoichiometry is close to 1:1. The interaction of ethyl acetate and hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin was investigated using molecular mechanics calculation. The binding energy was calculated and the possible conformation of ethyl acetate-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin inclusion complex was optimized to the minimum energy. The binding energy minimum is at the 0.44 × 10^-10  m point and its value is -103.9 kJ/mol. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Encapsulation of ethyl acetate in hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin is a possible way to protect ethyl acetate, improve its stability, water solubility, and may also enhance its lastingness.

Encapsulation of Flavours and Fragrances into Polymeric Capsules and Cyclodextrins Inclusion Complexes: An Update

Flavours and fragrances are volatile compounds of large interest for different applications. Due to their high tendency of evaporation and, in most cases, poor chemical stability, these compounds need to be encapsulated for handling and industrial processing. Encapsulation, indeed, resulted in being effective at overcoming the main concerns related to volatile compound manipulation, and several industrial products contain flavours and fragrances in an encapsulated form for the final usage of customers. Although several organic or inorganic materials have been investigated for the production of coated micro- or nanosystems intended for the encapsulation of fragrances and flavours, polymeric coating, leading to the formation of micro- or nanocapsules with a core-shell architecture, as well as a molecular inclusion complexation with cyclodextrins, are still the most used. The present review aims to summarise the recent literature about the encapsulation of fragrances and flavours into polymeric micro- or nanocapsules or inclusion complexes with cyclodextrins, with a focus on methods for micro/nanoencapsulation and applications in the different technological fields, including the textile, cosmetic, food and paper industries.
