Fabrication of nano-CuO-loaded PVA composite films with enhanced optomechanical properties

Zinc metal complexes synthesized by a green method as a new approach to alter the structural and optical characteristics of PVA: new field for polymer composite fabrication with controlled optical band gap

The current study employed a novel approach to design polymer composites with modified structural and declined optical band gaps. The results obtained in the present work for polymer composites can be considered an original method to make a new field for research based on green chemistry. Natural dyes extracted from green tea were mixed with hydrated zinc acetate (Zn(CH3COO)2·2H2O) to produce a metal complex. FTIR results comprehensively established the formation of the Zn-metal complex. The interaction among various components of PVA : Zn-metal complex composite was investigated using FTIR spectroscopy. The non-existence of anion bands of acetate in the Zn-metal complex spectrum confirms the formation of the Zn-metal complex. XRD analysis reveals that the Zn-metal complex improves the amorphous phase of the PVA-based composites. The absorption edge of the doped films shifted towards the lower photon energies. Optical dielectric properties were used to determine N/m*, ε ∞, τ, μ opt, ω p, and ρ opt; the W-D model was used to calculate E d, E o and n o parameters. The optical dielectric loss parameter was used to determine the optical band gap while the Tauc model was employed to identify various types of electron transitions. The optical energy band gap was 6.05 eV for clean PVA while it decreased to 1 eV for PVA inserted with the Zn-metal complex. The increase in Urbach energy from 0.26 eV to 0.45 eV is an evidence of the boost of amorphous phases in PVA : Zn-metal complex composites. The nonlinear refractive index and the first-order and second-order nonlinear optical susceptibilities were determined. The value of E o obtained from the W-D model closely matches the optical energy band gap obtained from the Tauc model, which indicates the precision of the analysis in the present study. The increase in SELF and VELF in the composite films establishes that new energy states assigned to the added Zn-metal complex amplify the probability of light-matter interaction.

Design and fabrication of dysprosium impregnated polyvinyl alcohol hydrogels. Physiochemical, mechanical, bioimaging and in vitro evaluation

Tissue engineering has gained prominence during the past decade since it offers a key solution to defects associated with the tissue regeneration. The limited healing potential of the cartilage tissue damage has significant clinical implications. Herein, dysprosium (Dy3+) impregnated polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogels have been developed to enhance the therapeutic efficacy, enabling simultaneous diagnostic imaging and antibacterial drug delivery for potential applications in articular cartilage. Based on the favorable imaging features, Dy3+ impregnated PVA hydrogels with enhanced stability were formed through successive steps of repeated cycles of freezing at - 30 °C for 21 h, thawing at 25 °C for 4 h and lyophilization. The tensile and compression tests of the hydrogels respectively determined a maximum of 3.88 and 1.58 MPa, which reflected better compatibility towards cartilage. The hydrogels fetched a sustained drug release for a period of 12 h with an associated swelling ratio of 80%. The potential of the resultant hydrogels in image diagnosis has been deliberated through their blue and yellow emissions in the visible region. Further, the computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging characteristics of the hydrogels respectively accomplished a maximum of 343 Hounsfiled units (HU) and relaxivity of 7.25 mM-1s-1. The cytocompatibility of the hydrogels is also determined through in vitro tests performed in Murine pro B cell line (BA/F3) and human Megakaryocyte cell line (Mo7e) cell lines.

Modification of the Structure and Linear/Nonlinear Optical Characteristics of PVA/Chitosan Blend through CuO Doping for Eco-Friendly Applications

The solution casting technique is utilized to fabricate blank and CuO-doped polyvinyl alcohol/chitosan (PVA/CS) blends for eco-friendly applications. The structure and surface morphologies of prepared samples were explored by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectrophotometry and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), respectively. FT-IR analysis reveals the incorporation of CuO particles within the PVA/CS structure. SEM analysis exposes the well-dispersion of CuO particles in the host medium. The linear/nonlinear optical characteristics were found on the basis of UV-visible-NIR measurements. The transmittance of the PVA/CS decreases upon CuO increasing to 20.0 wt%. The optical bandgap (E_{g dir.}/E_{g ind.}) decreases from 5.38/4.67 eV (blank PVA/CS) to 3.72/3.12 eV (20.0 wt% CuO-PVA/CS). An obvious improvement in the optical constants of the PVA/CS blend is achieved by CuO doping. The Wemple-DiDomenico (WDD) and Sellmeier oscillator models were utilized to examine the CuO role dispersion behavior of the PVA/CS blend. The optical analysis shows clear enrichment of the optical parameters of the PVA/CS host. The novel findings in the current study nominate CuO-doped PVA/CS films for applications in linear/nonlinear optical devices.

Facile assembly of flexible quaternary SnO2/SrSnO3/Fe3O4/PVDF nanocomposites with tunable optical, electrical, and magnetic properties for promising magneto-optoelectronic applications

Facile assembly, co-precipitation, and drop casting procedures have been used to construct SnO₂/SrSnO₃/Fe₃O₄/PVDF flexible nanocomposites. SnO₂/SrSnO₃/Fe₃O₄ nanocomposites (TSF NCs') have been successfully incorporated into polyvinylidene fluoride polymers (PF), according to the microstructural exploration of the systems, which was revealed by XRD, EDX, and ATR-FTIR analysis. The FESEM and cross-section areas demonstrated that the addition of TSF NCs' to PF porous material enhanced its surface characteristics and decreased its surface roughness. The optical gap was lowered from 3.90 to 3.07 eV, and it was discovered that both the refractive index and optical conductivity had improved when TSF NCs' were incorporated into PF. According to the observations, the supplement ratios have a profound influence on the dielectric properties of the nanocomposites. Moreover, the electrical parameters of TSF/PF nanocomposite are significantly modified. The TSF/PF magnetic nanocomposite has good magnetic reactivity and can be easily extracted from the aqueous solution using an external magnetic field, as demonstrated by VSM. This research has been conducted to obtain TSF/PF nanocomposites to be used in promising magno-optoelectronic applications.

Cupric oxide nanoparticles incorporated poly(hydroxybutyrate) nanocomposite for potential biosensing application

We report the synthesis of a novel electrochemical biosensor comprising of cupric oxide (CuO) nanoparticles (NPs) mediated poly(hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) composite film with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as a binder/template support using the solution casting method for the detection of a biomolecule i.e., ascorbic acid (AA). The specimens were characterized for surface, chemical, mechanical, optical, and electrochemical attributes. The results expressed regular mediation of CuO NPs in the PHB/PVA matrix towards nanobiocomposite formation with enhanced crystallinity, inter-molecular interactions, mechanical, and electrochemical attributes, and decreased hydrophilicity and bandgap, thus being useful in potential optoelectronic devices. The synthesized biocomposite film exhibited a tensile strength of 86.24 ± 4.10 N which might be due to reinforcement/uniform dispersion of the CuO nanofiller in the PHB-based matrix. The PHB/CuO composite, then, deposited on a glassy carbon electrode surface exhibited good electrocatalytic activity towards the AA in the aqueous media even at low analyte concentrations. Such modified electrode surfaces with metal/biopolymer complex could find possible applications in the detection of other bioactive molecules.

Development and Investigation of High Performance PVA/NiO and PVA/CuO Nanocomposites with Improved Physical, Dielectric and Mechanical Properties

A series of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)based composites with well dispersed nano fillers were fabricated and compared in terms of dielectric, mechanical, and optical properties. Specifically, NiO and CuO nano-fillers were utilized in a range of 0.2-0.6 wt% for thin film fabrication by solution deposition method. The characterization of nanocomposites was confirmed through FTIR, FESEM, and XRPD, whereas dielectric and mechanical properties were analyzed with respect to the filler concentrations. The bandgap of PVA/nano-filler composites reduced with an increase in NiO and CuO concentration from 0.2 to 0.6 wt%. The increase in the permittivity of the material was observed for 6 wt% of nano-fillers. The toughness of PVA/nano-filler composites was improved by increasing CuO and NiO concentration and Young's modulus of 30.9 and 27.2 MPa for 0.6 wt% of NiO and CuO-based nanocomposite, respectively, was observed. The addition of nano-fillers showed improved optical, dielectric, and mechanical properties.

Recent Advances in the Fabrication and Functionalization of Flexible Optical Biosensors: Toward Smart Life-Sciences Applications

Over the last 30 years, optical biosensors based on nanostructured materials have obtained increasing interest since they allow the screening of a wide variety of biomolecules with high specificity, low limits of detection, and great sensitivity. Among them, flexible optical platforms have the advantage of adapting to non-planar surfaces, suitable for in vivo and real-time monitoring of diseases and assessment of food safety. In this review, we summarize the newest and most advanced platforms coupling optically active materials (noble metal nanoparticles) and flexible substrates giving rise to hybrid nanomaterials and/or nanocomposites, whose performances are comparable to the ones obtained with hard substrates (e.g., glass and semiconductors). We focus on localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR)-based and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS)-based biosensors. We show that large-scale, cost-effective plasmonic platforms can be realized with the currently available techniques and we emphasize the open issues associated with this topic.

Performance-tuning of PVA-based gel electrolytes by acid/PVA ratio and PVA molecular weight

The significant breakthroughs of flexible gel electrolytes have attracted extensive attention in modern wearable electronic gadgets. The lack of all-around high-performing gels limits the advantages of such devices for practical applications. To this end, developing a multi-functional gel architecture with superior ionic conductivity while enjoying good mechanical flexibility is a bottleneck to overcome. Herein, an architecturally engineered gel, based on PVA and H3PO4 with different molecular weights of PVA for various PVA/H3PO4 ratios, was developed. The results show the dependence of ionic conductivity on molecular weight and also charge carrier concentration. Consequently, fine-tuning of PVA-based gels through a simple yet systematic and well-regulated strategy to achieve highly ion-conducting gels, with the highest ionic conductivity of 14.75 ± 1.39 mS cm-1 have been made to fulfill the requirement of flexible devices. More importantly, gel electrolytes possess good mechanical robustness while exhibiting high-elasticity (%766.66 ± 59.73), making it an appropriate candidate for flexible devices.
