A review of passive acid mine drainage treatment by PRB and LPB: From design, testing, to construction

An extensive volume of acid mine drainage (AMD) generated throughout the mining process has been widely regarded as one of the most catastrophic environmental problems. Surface water and groundwater impacted by pollution exhibit extreme low pH values and elevated sulfate and metal/metalloid concentrations, posing a serious threat to the production efficiency of enterprises, domestic water safety, and the ecological health of the basin. Over the recent years, a plethora of techniques has been developed to address the issue of AMD, encompassing nanofiltration membranes, lime neutralization, and carrier-microencapsulation. Nonetheless, these approaches often come with substantial financial implications and exhibit restricted long-term sustainability. Among the array of choices, the permeable reactive barrier (PRB) system emerges as a noteworthy passive remediation method for AMD. Distinguished by its modest construction expenses and enduring stability, this approach proves particularly well-suited for addressing the environmental challenges posed by abandoned mines. This study undertook a comprehensive evaluation of the PRB systems utilized in the remediation of AMD. Furthermore, it introduced the concept of low permeability barrier, derived from the realm of site-contaminated groundwater management. The strategies pertaining to the selection of materials, the physicochemical aspects influencing long-term efficacy, the intricacies of design and construction, as well as the challenges and prospects inherent in barrier technology, are elaborated upon in this discourse.

Adsorption efficiency of chitosan/clinoptilolite (CS/CZ) composite for effective removal of Cd+2 and Cr+6 ions from wastewater effluents of dairy cattle farms

The wastewater effluent is responsible for the major ecological impact of the dairy sectors. To avoid the negative consequences of heavy metal pollution on the ecosystem, creative, affordable, and efficient treatment methods are now required before the effluent flows into the surrounding area. This study was aimed at assessing the effectiveness of three different adsorbents for Cd+2 and Cr+6 ions from wastewater effluents of dairy farms, including chitosan (CS), clinoptilolite zeolite (CZ), and chitosan/clinoptilolite zeolite (CS/CZ) composite. The adsorption kinetics of the CS/CZ composite were established using the effects of the key variables (pH, agitation speed, adsorbent concentrations, and contact durations). The removal (%) and adsorption capacities, qe (mg/g), were calculated using the data from the adsorption kinetics. Wastewater samples (n = 60) were collected from the wastewater effluents of five farms. Cd+2 and Cr+6 ion concentrations in all collected samples were determined. Following the CS/CZ composite creation, it was characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (X-RD), and Fourier-transform infrared spectrum (FT-IR). The CS/CZ composite had an adsorption capacity of 92.4 and 96.5 mg/g for both Cd+2 and Cr+6 ions at a concentration of 2.0 g/100 ml, respectively, while the CZ adsorption capacities for the two ions were 87.5 mg/g and 61.0 mg/g, respectively, at 4.0 g/100 ml concentration. The CS was achieved at 55.56 mg/g and 33.3 mg/g, respectively, at the same concentration. The efficiency of heavy metal removal was enhanced by increasing adsorbent concentration, agitation speed, and contact duration. Using CS/CZ composite at 2.0 g/100 ml concentration, 180 min of contact time, and 300 rpm agitation speed, the greatest removal efficiencies for Cd+2 and Cr+6 ions (96.43 and 98.75%, respectively) were demonstrated.

Advanced technologies in water treatment: Chitosan and its modifications as effective agents in the adsorption of contaminants

The study delves into the mechanisms involved in wastewater treatment with chitosan, emphasizing the interactions between the polymer and various contaminants. Additionally, the application of chitosan as a contaminant removal agent in a post-pandemic context is addressed, considering the challenges related to waste management and environmental preservation. The analysis highlights the potential contribution of chitosan in mitigating environmental impacts post-pandemic, offering practical solutions for treating contaminated effluents and promoting sustainability. The study addresses current obstacles and prospects for chitosan-based wastewater treatment, emphasizing its promising role in sustainable water management.

Synthesis of carboxymethyl starch co (polyacrylamide/ polyacrylic acid) hydrogel for removing methylene blue dye from aqueous solution

Natural polysaccharides, notably starch, have garnered attention for their accessibility, cost-effectiveness, and biodegradability. Modifying starch to carboxymethyl starch enhances its solubility, swelling capacity, and adsorption efficiency. This research examines the synthesis of an effective hydrogel adsorbent based on carboxymethyl starch for the elimination of methylene blue from aqueous solutions. The hydrogel was synthesized using polyacrylamide and polyacrylic acid as monomers, ammonium persulfate as the initiator, and N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide as the cross-linker. Through FESEM, swelling morphology was evaluated in both distilled water and methylene blue dye. The adsorption data elucidated that the adsorption capacity of the hydrogel significantly depends on the dosage of the adsorbent, pH, and concentration of the MB dye. At a pH of 7 and a dye concentration of 250 mg/L, the hydrogel exhibited an impressive 95 % removal rate for methylene blue. The results indicate that the adsorption process follows pseudo-second-order kinetics and conforms well to the Langmuir adsorption isotherm, indicating a maximum adsorption capacity of 1700 mg/g. According to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and FTIR analysis, methylene blue chemisorbs to the adsorbent material. Hydrogel absorbents regulate adsorption through both intra-particle diffusion and liquid film diffusion. These results highlight the potential of the new hydrogel absorber for water purification.

Recovery of Ag(I) from Wastewater by Adsorption: Status and Challenges

Untreated or inadequately treated silver-containing wastewater may pose adverse effects on hu-man health and the ecological environment. Currently, significant progress has been made in the treatment of Ag(I) in wastewater using adsorption methods, with adsorbents playing a pivotal role in this process. This paper provides a systematic review of various adsorbents for the recovery and treatment of Ag(I) in wastewater, including MOFs, COFs, transition metal sulfides, metal oxides, biomass materials, and other polymeric materials. The adsorption mechanisms of these materials for Ag(I) are elaborated upon, along with the challenges currently faced. Furthermore, insights into optimizing adsorbents and developing novel adsorbents are proposed in this study.

Fabrication and properties of hydroxyapatite/chitosan composite scaffolds loaded with periostin for bone regeneration

This paper reports a facile fabrication method of hydroxyapatite/chitosan (HAp/CS) composite scaffold with 3D porous structure without using any chemical cross-linkers. The HAp particles had an urchin-like hollow microstructure and high surface area, which was uniformly dispersed into the pore walls of the HAp/CS scaffold. The addition of HAp can efficiently enhance the mechanical properties and bioactivity of the HAp/CS scaffold. Moreover, periostin was successfully loaded onto the HAp/CS scaffold. When applied to the repair of bone defect in a rat mandibular model, the HAp/CS scaffold loaded with periostin can enhance osteointegration and accelerate bone regeneration. Our research combines periostin with the HAp/CS composite material, which provides a novel strategy to improve bone regeneration and has great application prospect in bone repair fields.

Development of chitosan biopolymer by chemically modified orange peel for safranin O dye removal: A sustainable adsorbent and adsorption modeling using RSM-BBD

This study aimed to develop a biocomposite (hereinafter, CHI/OP-H2SO4) via the functionalization of chitosan (CHI) biopolymer by chemically modified orange peel (OP-H2SO4). The physicochemical characteristics of CHI/OP-H2SO4 were studied using methods such as pHpzc, XRD, FTIR, BET, and FESEM-EDX. The efficacy of the CHI/OP-H2SO4 biocomposite in removing cationic dye (safranin O, SAF-O) from aqueous solutions was assessed. The Box-Behnken Design (BBD) based on response surface methodology (RSM) was employed to optimize the adsorption performance of CHI/OP-H2SO4, considering factors such as A: CHI/OP-H2SO4 dose (0.02-0.08 g), B: pH (4-10), and C: time (10-60 min). The pseudo-first-order and Freundlich isotherm models align well with the experimental data of SAF-O adsorption by CHI/OP-H2SO4. The excellent adsorption capacity for CHI/OP-H2SO4 was recorded (321.2 mg/g). The notable adsorption of SAF-O onto CHI/OP-H2SO4 is attributed primarily to electrostatic forces between the acidic groups of CHI/OP-H2SO4 and the SAF-O cation, along with H-bonding, and n-π interactions. By transforming waste materials into valuable resources, this approach not only mitigates environmental impact but also produces a promising and sustainable adsorbent for the removal of cationic dyes, exemplified here by the effective removal of SAF-O dye.

Advances in chitosan and chitosan derivatives for biomedical applications in tissue engineering: An updated review

In recent years, chitosan (CS) has received much attention as a functional biopolymer for various applications, especially in the biomedical field. It is a natural polysaccharide created by the chemical deacetylation of chitin (CT) that is nontoxic, biocompatible, and biodegradable. This natural polymer is difficult to process; however, chemical modification of the CS backbone allows improved use of functional derivatives. CS and its derivatives are used to prepare hydrogels, membranes, scaffolds, fibers, foams, and sponges, primarily for regenerative medicine. Tissue engineering (TE), currently one of the fastest-growing fields in the life sciences, primarily aims to restore or replace lost or damaged organs and tissues using supports that, combined with cells and biomolecules, generate new tissue. In this sense, the growing interest in the application of biomaterials based on CS and some of its derivatives is justifiable. This review aims to summarize the most important recent advances in developing biomaterials based on CS and its derivatives and to study their synthesis, characterization, and applications in the biomedical field, especially in the TE area.

A review on versatile applications of biomaterial/polycationic chitosan: An insight into the structure-property relationship

Chitosan is a versatile and generous biopolymer obtained by alkaline deacetylation of naturally occurring chitin, the second most abundant biopolymer after cellulose. The excellent physicochemical properties of polycationic chitosan are attributed to the presence of varied functional groups such as amino, hydroxyl, and acetamido groups enabling researchers to tailor the structure and properties of chitosan by different methods such as crosslinking, grafting, copolymerization, composites, and molecular imprinting techniques. The prepared derivatives have diverse applications in the food industry, water treatment, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, textiles, and biomedical applications. In this review, numerous applications of chitosan and its derivatives in various fields have been discussed in detail with an insight into their structure-property relationship. This review article concludes and explains the chitosan's biocompatibility and efficiency that has been done so far with future usage and applications as well. Moreover, the possible mechanism of chitosan's activity towards several emerging fields such as energy storage, biodegradable packaging, photocatalysis, biorefinery, and environmental bioremediation are also discussed. Overall, this comprehensive review discusses the science and complete information behind chitosan's wonder function to improve our understanding which is much needful as well as will pave the way towards a sustainable future.

Chitosan derivatives as dynamic coatings for transferrin glycoform separation in capillary electrophoresis

Chitosan and its derivatives are interesting biopolymers for different field of analytical chemistry, especially in separation techniques. The present study was aimed at testing chitosan water soluble derivatives as dynamic coating agents for application to capillary electrophoresis. In particular, chitosan was modified following three different chemical reactions (nucleophilic substitution, reductive amination, and condensation) to introduce differences in charge and steric hindrance, and to assess the effect of these physico-chemical properties in capillary electrophoresis. The effects were tested on the capillary electrophoretic separation of the glycoforms of human transferrin, an important iron-transporting serum protein, one of which, namely disialo-transferrin (CDT), is a biomarker of alcohol abuse. Chitosan derivatives were characterized by using NMR and 1H NMR, HP-SEC-TDA, DLS, and rheology. The use of these compounds as dynamic coatings in the electrolyte running buffer in capillary electrophoresis was tested assessing the peak resolution of the main glycoforms of human transferrin and particularly of disialo-transferrin. The results showed distinct changes of the peak resolution produced by the different derivatives. The best results in terms of peak resolution were achieved using polyethylene glycol (PEG)-modified chitosan, which, in comparison to a reference analytical approach, provided an almost baseline resolution of disialo-transferrin from the adjacent peaks.

Next-Generation Water Treatment: Exploring the Potential of Biopolymer-Based Nanocomposites in Adsorption and Membrane Filtration

This review article focuses on the potential of biopolymer-based nanocomposites incorporating nanoparticles, graphene oxide (GO), carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and nanoclays in adsorption and membrane filtration processes for water treatment. The aim is to explore the effectiveness of these innovative materials in addressing water scarcity and contamination issues. The review highlights the exceptional adsorption capacities and improved membrane performance offered by chitosan, GO, and CNTs, which make them effective in removing heavy metals, organic pollutants, and emerging contaminants from water. It also emphasizes the high surface area and ion exchange capacity of nanoclays, enabling the removal of heavy metals, organic contaminants, and dyes. Integrating magnetic (Fe2O4) adsorbents and membrane filtration technologies is highlighted to enhance adsorption and separation efficiency. The limitations and challenges associated are also discussed. The review concludes by emphasizing the importance of collaboration with industry stakeholders in advancing biopolymer-based nanocomposites for sustainable and comprehensive water treatment solutions.

Recovery of Phosphate(V) Ions from Water and Wastewater Using Chitosan-Based Sorbents Modified-A Literature Review

Over the past two decades, there has been increasing interest in the use of low-cost and effective sorbents in water treatment. Hybrid chitosan sorbents are potential materials for the adsorptive removal of phosphorus, which occurs in natural waters mainly in the form of orthophosphate(V). Even though there are numerous publications on this topic, the use of such sorbents in industrial water treatment and purification is limited and controversial. However, due to the explosive human population growth, the ever-increasing global demand for food has contributed to the consumption of phosphorus compounds and other biogenic elements (such as nitrogen, potassium, or sodium) in plant cultivation and animal husbandry. Therefore, the recovery and reuse of phosphorus compounds is an important issue to investigate for the development and maintenance of a circular economy. This paper characterizes the problem of the presence of excess phosphorus in water reservoirs and presents methods for the adsorptive removal of phosphate(V) from water matrices using chitosan composites. Additionally, we compare the impact of modifications, structure, and form of chitosan composites on the efficiency of phosphate ion removal and adsorption capacity. The state of knowledge regarding the mechanism of adsorption is detailed, and the results of research on the desorption of phosphates are described.

Calcium-Alginate-Chitosan Nanoparticle as a Potential Solution for Pesticide Removal, a Computational Approach

Pesticides have a significant negative impact on the environment, non-target organisms, and human health. To address these issues, sustainable pest management practices and government regulations are necessary. However, biotechnology can provide additional solutions, such as the use of polyelectrolyte complexes to encapsulate and remove pesticides from water sources. We introduce a computational methodology to evaluate the capture capabilities of Calcium-Alginate-Chitosan (CAC) nanoparticles for a broad range of pesticides. By employing ensemble-docking and molecular dynamics simulations, we investigate the intermolecular interactions and absorption/adsorption characteristics between the CAC nanoparticles and selected pesticides. Our findings reveal that charged pesticide molecules exhibit more than double capture rates compared to neutral counterparts, owing to their stronger affinity for the CAC nanoparticles. Non-covalent interactions, such as van der Waals forces, π-π stacking, and hydrogen bonds, are identified as key factors which stabilized the capture and physisorption of pesticides. Density profile analysis confirms the localization of pesticides adsorbed onto the surface or absorbed into the polymer matrix, depending on their chemical nature. The mobility and diffusion behavior of captured compounds within the nanoparticle matrix is assessed using mean square displacement and diffusion coefficients. Compounds with high capture levels exhibit limited mobility, indicative of effective absorption and adsorption. Intermolecular interaction analysis highlights the significance of hydrogen bonds and electrostatic interactions in the pesticide-polymer association. Notably, two promising candidates, an antibiotic derived from tetracycline and a rodenticide, demonstrate a strong affinity for CAC nanoparticles. This computational methodology offers a reliable and efficient screening approach for identifying effective pesticide capture agents, contributing to the development of eco-friendly strategies for pesticide removal.

The use of chitosan-based composites for environmental remediation: A review

The presence of hazardous pollutants in water sources as a result of industrial activities is a major environmental challenge that impedes the availability of safe drinking water. Adsorptive and photocatalytic degradative removal of various pollutants in wastewater have been recognized as cost-effective and energy-efficient strategies. In addition to its biological activity, chitosan and its derivatives are considered as promising materials for the removal of various pollutants. The abundance of hydroxyl and amino groups in the chitosan macromolecular structure results in a variety of concurrent pollutant's adsorption mechanisms. Furthermore, adding chitosan to photocatalysts increases the mass transfer while decreasing both the band gap energy and the amount of intermediates produced during photocatalytic processes, improving the overall photocatalytic efficiency. Herein, we have reviewed the current design and preparation of chitosan and its composites, as well as their applications for the removal of various pollutants by adsorption and photocatalysis processes. Effects of operating variables such as the pH, catalyst mass, contact time, light wavelength, initial pollutant's concentration, and catalyst recyclability, are discussed. Various kinetic and isotherm models are presented to elucidate the rates, and mechanisms of pollutant's removal, onto chitosan-based composites, and several case studies are presented. Additionally, the antibacterial activity of chitosan-based composites has been discussed. This review aims to provide a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of the applications of chitosan-based composites in wastewater treatment and put forward new insights for the development of highly effective chitosan-based adsorbents and photocatalysts. Finally, the main challenges and future directions in the field are discussed.

Preparation of polyamidoamine dendrimer-functionalized chitosan beads for the removal of Ag(I), Cu(II), and Pb(II)

Chitosan bead grafted by third-generation dendrimers (CB-G3) with a diameter of 1.40 mm was synthesized to investigate their performance in recovering Ag(I), Cu(II), and Pb(II) ions in aqueous media. The prepared adsorbents were characterized by XRD, FT-IR, elemental analysis, TGA, and SEM, and the effects of pH, contact time, concentration, and temperature were examined. The results showed that the adsorbents were successfully fabricated. The optimum pH value was 5, and the increased generation number contributed to adsorption capacity improvement, indicating that electrostatic interactions between amine groups and metal ions are the governing mechanism of adsorption by the CB-G3. The kinetics, isotherms, and thermodynamics of Ag(I), Cu(II), and Pb(II) adsorption onto the CB-G3 were investigated. The adsorption processes can be described using pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir models. The maximum monolayer adsorption capacities were 105.62, 88.82, and 97.87 mg·g^-1 for Ag(I), Cu(II), and Pb(II) at 30 °C within 210 min, respectively. Electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonds are the main mechanisms between metal ions and N atoms. Therefore, the CB-G3 is a promising candidate for Ag(I), Cu(II), and Pb(II) adsorption owing to its splendid ability in easy separation, good adsorptivity, and reusability for efficiently adsorbing Ag(I), Cu(II), and Pb(II) ions.

Isolation and screening of a chitin deacetylase producing Bacillus cereus and its potential for chitosan preparation

Chitosan is a biopolymer material extracted from marine biomass waste such as shrimp and crab shells, which has good biocompatibility and degradability with great potential for application in the field of wastewater treatment and soil remediation. The higher the degree of deacetylation (DD), the better the adsorption performance of chitosan. Chitin deacetylase (CDA) can specifically catalyze the deacetylate of chitin in a green reaction that is environmentally friendly. However, the scarcity of high yielding chitin deacetylase strains has been regarded as the technical bottleneck of chitosan green production. Here, we screened a natural chitin degrading bacterium from coastal mud and identified it as Bacillus cereus ZWT-08 by re-screening the chitin deacetylase activity and degree of deacetylation values. By optimizing the medium conditions and enzyme production process, ZWT-08 was cultured in fermentation medium with 1% (m/V) glucose and yeast extract at pH 6.0, 37°C, and a stirring speed of 180 r/min. After fermenting in 5 L fermenter for 48 h, the deacetylation activity of the supernatant reached 613.25 U/mL. Electron microscopic examination of the chitin substrate in the fermentation medium revealed a marshmallow-like fluffy texture on its structural surface. Meanwhile, 89.29% of the acetyl groups in this chitin substrate were removed by enzymatic digestion of chitin deacetylase produced by ZWT-08, resulting in the preparation of chitosan a degree of deacetylation higher than 90%. As an effective strain for chitosan production, Bacillus cereus ZWT-08 plays a positive role in the bioconversion of chitin and the upgrading of the chitosan industry.

Preparation of a Chitosan-Lead Composite Carbon Aerogel and Its Catalytic Thermal Decomposition Performance on Ammonium Perchlorate

Chitosan-lead (CS-Pb) carbon aerogels were prepared by ionic cross-linking and high-temperature carbonization using chitosan (CS) as the carbon precursor. The obtained carbon aerogels were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The obtained aerogels have a 3D structure and a large surface area, which can effectively prevent the agglomeration phenomenon of metals. Differential thermal analysis (DTA) was used to analyze the catalytic performance of a carbon aerogel for ammonium perchlorate (AP). The results showed that the CS-Pb carbon aerogel reduced the peak temperature of AP pyrolysis from 703.9 to 627.7 K. According to the Kissinger method calculations, the E_a of AP decomposition decreased about 27.2 kJ/mol. The TG data at different warming rates were analyzed by the Flynne-Walle-Ozawa (FWO) and Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose (KAS) methods, which are two of the isoconversion methods, and the activation energies of AP and AP+CS-Pb-3.5 were calculated. Between the conversion degrees (α) of 0.1 and 0.9, the E_a values obtained by the two isoconversion methods are similar and have a certain match. Also, the two isoconversion methods confirm Kissinger's calculation. Finally, thermogravimetry-mass spectrometry (TG-MS) was used to monitor the gases generated during the thermal decomposition of the AP+CS-Pb-3.5 system in real time.

Chitosans and Nanochitosans: Recent Advances in Skin Protection, Regeneration, and Repair

Chitosan displays a dual function, acting as both an active ingredient and/or carrier for pharmaceutical bioactive molecules and metal ions. Its hydroxyl- and amino-reactive groups and acetylation degree can be used to adjust this biopolymer's physicochemical and pharmacological properties in different forms, including scaffolds, nanoparticles, fibers, sponges, films, and hydrogels, among others. In terms of pharmacological purposes, chitosan association with different polymers and the immobilization or entrapment of bioactive agents are effective strategies to achieve desired biological responses. Chitosan biocompatibility, water entrapment within nanofibrils, antioxidant character, and antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, whether enhanced by other active components or not, ensure skin moisturization, as well as protection against bacteria colonization and oxidative imbalance. Chitosan-based nanomaterials can maintain or reconstruct skin architecture through topical or systemic delivery of hydrophilic or hydrophobic pharmaceuticals at controlled rates to treat skin affections, such as acne, inflammatory manifestations, wounds, or even tumorigenesis, by coating chemotherapy drugs. Herein, chitosan obtention, physicochemical characteristics, chemical modifications, and interactions with bioactive agents are presented and discussed. Molecular mechanisms involved in chitosan skin protection and recovery are highlighted by overlapping the events orchestrated by the signaling molecules secreted by different cell types to reconstitute healthy skin tissue structures and components.

Chitosan/Silk Fibroin Materials for Biomedical Applications-A Review

This review provides a report on recent advances in the field of chitosan (CTS) and silk fibroin (SF) biopolymer blends as new biomaterials. Chitosan and silk fibroin are widely used to obtain biomaterials. However, the materials based on the blends of these two biopolymers have not been summarized in a review paper yet. As these materials can attract both academic and industrial attention, we propose this review paper to showcase the latest achievements in this area. In this review, the latest literature regarding the preparation and properties of chitosan and silk fibroin and their blends has been reviewed.

Nanosized Contrast Agents in Ultrasound Molecular Imaging

Applying nanosized ultrasound contrast agents (nUCAs) in molecular imaging has received considerable attention. nUCAs have been instrumental in ultrasound molecular imaging to enhance sensitivity, identification, and quantification. nUCAs can achieve high performance in molecular imaging, which was influenced by synthetic formulations and size. This review presents an overview of nUCAs from different synthetic formulations with a discussion on imaging and detection technology. Then we also review the progress of nUCAs in preclinical application and highlight the recent challenges of nUCAs.

Boron Removal by Sorption on Modified Chitosan Hydrogel Beads

An excess concentration of boron in irrigation and drinking water can negatively affect the yield of plants and the human nervous system, respectively. To meet the recommended levels, hybrid biosorbent hydrogel beads based on chitosan and manganese (II-IV) were employed for the removal of boron from aqueous media. The results showed that the biosorbent effectively removed boric acid from the aqueous medium at neutral pH over a sorption time of 2 h and the liquid/hydrogel ratio of 20 mL/g, achieving a maximum sorption capacity near 190 mg/g. The modeling of the sorption equilibrium data indicated that the Freundlich isotherm equation gave the best fit out of the isotherm models examined. A pseudo-second-order model was found to best describe the sorption kinetics. The favorable attachment of manganese to the chitosan structure enabled the sorption of boron and was confirmed by FTIR, RS, XRD, SEM and ICP-OES methods. Boron desorption from the spent biosorbent was successfully achieved in three cycles using a NaOH solution. In general, the results of this research indicate that this method is one of the possibilities for improving water quality and may contribute to reducing pollution of the aquatic environment.

Recovery of Heavy Metal Ions Using Magnetic Glycine-Modified Chitosan—Application to Aqueous Solutions and Tailing Leachate

The necessity of decontaminating effluents for the dual purpose of environmental beneficiation and valorization of low-grade resources is driving the development of new sorbents. The functionalization of biopolymers is a promising strategy for improving sorption performance. Incorporating magnetic micro-particles offers an opportunity for the facilitated recovery of spent micron-size sorbent. Combining magnetic facilities and biopolymer functionalization represents a winning strategy. Magnetic glycine-grafted chitosan (G@MChs) was synthesized for the sorption of Ni(II), Zn(II), and Hg(II) before being applied to the removal of hazardous and strategic metals from tailing leachates. The sorbent was characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy, before and after metal sorption. The acid–base properties of functionalized sorbent were also determined (pHPZC). Uptake kinetics were studied in mono- and multi-component solutions using different equations for kinetic modeling at optimized pH (i.e., pH0: 5.5). Langmuir and Sips equations were applied to model sorption isotherms in single-component solutions. In addition, sorption isotherms in multi-component solutions were used to evaluate the preference for selected metals. Maximum sorption capacities were 0.35 mmol Hg g−1, 0.47 mmol Zn g−1, and 0.50 mmol Ni g−1. Acidified urea solution (pH 2.7) successfully desorbs metal ions from G@MChs (desorption > 90%). The sorbent was tested for the recovery of hazardous and strategic metal ions from acidic leachates of tailings. This study demonstrates the promising performance of G@MChs for the treatment of complex metal-bearing solutions.
