Preparation of chitosan/DADMAC/lignin terpolymer and its application of dye wastewater flocculation

Effective and green in-situ remediation strategies based on TEMPO-nanocellulose/lignin/MIL-100(Fe) hydrogel nanocomposite adsorbent for lead and copper in agricultural soils

Hydrogel adsorbents are promising tools for reducing heavy metals' bioavailability in contaminated soil. However, their practical feasibility remains limited by the low stability, inefficient removal efficiency, and potential secondary pollution. Optimizing the adsorption operation and the functional properties of hydrogel adsorbents could eliminate this method's drawbacks. Herein, three innovative in-situ remediation strategies for Pb/Cu-contaminated soil were adopted based on the concept of novel TEMPO-cellulose (TO-NFCs)/lignin/acrylamide@MIL-100(Fe) nanocomposite hydrogel adsorbent (NCLMH). Characteristic analyses revealed ideal Pb/Cu adsorption mechanisms by swelling, complexation, electrical attraction, and ion exchange via carboxyl/hydroxyl/carbonyl groups and unsaturated Fe(III) sites on ANCMH besides FeOOH formation. The highest maximum theoretical adsorption capacities of Pb(II) and Cu(II) on ANCMH were 416.39 and 133.98 mg/g, under pH 6.5, governed by pseudo-second-order/Freundlich models. Greenhouse pot experiments with contaminated soils amended with two-depth layers of 0.5% NCLMHs (SA@NCLMH) displayed a decline in Pb and Cu bioavailability up to 85.9% and 74.5% within 45 d. Soil column studies simulating continuous water soil flushing coupled with NCLMH layers, instead of conventional extractant fluids, and connected to NCLMH-sand column as purification unit (CF@NCLMH) achieved higher removal rates for Pb, and Cu of 89.5% and 77.2% within 24 h. Alternatively, conducting multiple-pulse soil flushing mode (MF@NCLMH) gained the highest Pb and Cu removal of 96.5% and 85.4%, as the water flushing-stop flux events allowed adequate water movement/residence period, promoting Pb/Cu desorption-adsorption from soil to NCLMH. Also, the NCLMH-sand column conducting and easy separation of the stable/reusable NCLMHs prevented the potential secondary pollution. Interestingly, the three remediated soils reached the corresponding regulation of the permissible limits for Pb and Cu residential scenarios in medium-to-heavily agricultural polluted soils, alleviating the Pb/Cu bioaccumulation and phytotoxicity symptoms in cultivated wheat, especially after MF@NCLMH treatment. This study introduces promising alternative remediation strategies with high sustainability and feasibility in acidic-to-neutral heavy metal-contaminated agricultural soil.

Evaluation of layer-by-layer assembly systems for drug delivery and antimicrobial properties in orthopaedic application

Layer-by-layer self-assembly systems were developed using monolayer and multilayer carriers to prevent infections and improve bone regeneration of porous Ti-6Al-4V scaffolds. These polymeric carriers incorporated (Gel/Alg-IGF-1 + Chi-Cef) and (4Gel/Alg-IGF-1 + Chi-Cef) on the surface of porous implants produced via electron beam melting (EBM). The results showed that the drug release from multilayer carriers was higher than that of monolayers after 14 days. However, the carrier containing Gel/Alg-IGF-1 + Chi-Cef exhibited more sustained behavior. Cell morphology was characterized, revealing that multilayer carriers had higher cell adhesion than monolayers. Additionally, cell differentiation was significantly greater for (Gel/Alg-IGF-1) + Chi-Cef, and (4Gel/Alg-IGF-1) + Chi-Cef multilayer carriers than for the monolayer groups after 7 days. Notably, the drug dosage was effective and did not interfere, and the cell viability assay showed safe results. Antibacterial evaluations demonstrated that both multilayer carriers had a greater effect on Staphylococcus aureus during treatment. The carriers containing lower alginate had notably less effect than the other studied carriers. This study aimed to test systems for controlling drug release, which will be applied to improve MG63 cell behavior and prevent bacterial accumulation during orthopaedic applications.

High performance, cost-effective and ecofriendly flocculant synthesized by grafting carboxymethyl cellulose and alginate with itaconic acid

Natural polymer flocculant possesses an exciting prospect in water treatment due to its non-toxicity, wide source, low cost and biodegradability. In this work, we have successfully synthesized the anionic terpolymer of carboxymethyl cellulose-itaconic acid‑sodium alginate (CIS) by microwave-assisted copolymerization. By studying the flocculation properties towards cationic dye of crystal violet (CV), the optimum synthesis conditions were determined. The maximum removal rate of 100 mg/L CV simulated wastewater was 92.2 % with CIS concentration of 30 mg/L. The flocculation kinetic results showed the rapid dye removal rate and the dye decolorization ratio of 89.8 % could be obtained at 75 s. Moreover, the CIS flocculant showed excellent flocculation effects in ambient pH of 4-10, flocculation temperature of 10-40 °C, and various inorganic salts. In general, the anionic CIS flocculant shows excellent cost effectiveness, where the predicted operation cost of as-prepared CIS is about 60 % of conventional polyacrylamide flocculant. It also has the advantages of excellent ecofriendliness and rich raw material source, indicative its potential applications of wastewater treatment.

Amine-Modified Chitosan Flocculant Synthesized via Single-Mode Microwave Method for Laundry Wastewater Treatment

In this study, an effective and environmentally friendly polyaminated cross-linked chitosan (M-PACTS) flocculant was successfully synthesized via circular focus single-mode microwave synthesizer irradiation. Epichlorohydrin and tetraethylenepentamine were used as the cross-linking agent and active cationic reagent, respectively. The same formation was used to prepare cationic lightly cross-linked chitosan (C-PACTS) via the conventional heating method. The flocculant was characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. The flocculation capability of C-PACTS and M-PACTS was compared using laundry wastewater as a model pollutant. The pH, PACTS dosage, temperature, stirring rate, stirring time, and setting time were systematically investigated. The experimental results showed that circular focus single-mode microwave synthesizer irradiation was a more efficient method to modify chitosan. M-PACTS exhibited a higher capacity for turbidity and chemical oxygen demand (COD_Cr) removal. Under optimal conditions, the removal rate values of M-PACTS were up to 96% (turbidity) and 78% (COD_Cr). The proposed PACTS is suitable for treatment of polluted wastewater in an eco-friendly manner without causing secondary pollution.
