Abstract
Carbamylation is a nonenzymatic post-translational modification resulting from the reaction between cyanate, a urea by-product, and proteins. In vivo and in vitro studies have demonstrated that carbamylation modifies protein structures and functions, triggering unfavourable molecular and cellular responses. An enhanced formation of carbamylation-derived products (CDPs) is observed in pathological contexts, especially during chronic kidney disease (CKD), because of increased blood urea. Significantly, studies have reported a positive correlation between serum CDPs and the evolutive state of renal failure. Further, serum concentrations of carbamylated proteins are characterized as strong predictors of mortality in end-stage renal disease patients. Over time, it is likely that these modified compounds become aggravating factors and promote long-term complications, including cardiovascular disorders and inflammation or immune system dysfunctions. These poor clinical outcomes have led researchers to consider strategies to prevent or slow down CDP formation. Even if growing evidence suggests the involvement of carbamylation in the pathophysiology of CKD, the real relevance of carbamylation is still unclear: is it a causal phenomenon, a metabolic consequence or just a biological feature? In this review, we discuss how carbamylation, a consequence of renal function decline, may become a causal phenomenon of kidney disease progression and how CDPs may be used as biomarkers.

Abstract
To identify the targets recognized by anti-carbamylated protein antibodies (anti-CarP) in patients with early Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), to study the cross-reactivity between anti-CarP and anti-citrullinated protein antibodies (ACPA) and to evaluate their prognostic value. 331 patients (184 RA and 147 other rheumatisms) from the Very Early Arthritis (VErA) French cohort were analyzed. We performed mass spectrometry analysis of RA sera displaying anti-CarP activity and epitope mapping of the carbamylated fibrinogen γ chain to identify immunodominant peptides. The specificity of these targets was studied using competition assays with the major antigens recognized by ACPA. The prognostic value of anti-carbamylated fibrinogen IgG antibodies (ACa-Fib IgG) was compared to that of anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide antibodies (anti-CCP) and anti-CarP using an in-house ELISA. Besides the α chain, the γ chain of fibrinogen, particularly one immunodominant epitope that has a specific reactivity, was identified as a circulating carbamylated target in sera. The prevalence of ACa-Fib was 37% at baseline and 10.9% for anti-CCP-negative RA. In anti-CCP-negative patients, ACa-Fib positivity was associated with a more inflammatory and erosive disease at baseline but not with rapid radiological progression, which remains strongly related to anti-CCP antibodies. Fibrinogen seems to be one of the antigens recognized in vivo by the anti-CarP response, particularly 2 epitopes of the γ chain, one of which is not cross reactive with ACPA. This specificity might be associated with a distinct clinical phenotype since ACa-Fib IgG were shown to be linked to systemic inflammation in very early RA but not to rapid radiological progression.

Abstract
Background Homocitrullination is the post-translational modification of lysine that is recognized by T cells. Methods This study identified homocitrullinated peptides from aldolase, enolase, cytokeratin and binding immunoglobulin protein and used human leukocyte antigen (HLA) transgenic mice to assess immunogenicity by enzyme-linked immunosorbent spot assay. Vaccine efficacy was assessed in tumor therapy studies using HLA-matched B16 melanoma expressing constitutive or interferon γ (IFNγ)-inducible major histocompatibility complex class II (MHC-II) as represented by most human tumors. To determine the mechanism behind the therapy, immune cell infiltrates were analyzed using flow cytometry and therapy studies in the presence of myeloperoxidase (MPO) inhibitor and T-cell depletion performed. We assessed the T-cell repertoire to homocitrullinated peptides in patients with cancer and healthy donors using flow cytometry. Results Homocitrulline (Hcit) peptide vaccination stimulated strong CD4 T-cell responses and induced significant antitumor therapy in an established tumor model. The antitumor response was dependent on CD4 T cells and the effect was driven mainly via direct tumor recognition, as responses were only observed if the tumors were induced to express MHC-II. In vitro proliferation assays show that healthy donors and patients with cancer have an oligoclonal CD4 T-cell repertoire recognizing homocitrullinated peptides. Inhibition of cyanate generation, which mediates homocitrullination, by MPO inhibition reduced tumor therapy by the vaccine induced T cells (p=0.0018). Analysis of the tumor microenvironment (TME) suggested that myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) were a potential source of MPO. The selected B16 melanoma model showed MDSC infiltration and was appropriate to see if the Hcit vaccine could overcome the immunosuppression associated with MDSCs. The vaccine was very effective (90% survival) as the induced CD4 T cells directly targeted the homocitrullinated tumor and likely reversed the immunosuppressive environment. Conclusion We propose that MPO, potentially produced by MDSCs, catalyzes the buildup of cyanate in the TME which diffuses into tumor cells causing homocitrullination of cytoplasmic proteins which are degraded and, in the presence of IFNγ, presented by MHC-II for direct CD4 T-cell recognition. Homocitrullinated proteins are a new target for cancer vaccines and may be particularly effective against tumors containing high levels of MPO expressing MDSCs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A range of anti-modified protein antibodies (AMPAs) are associated with rheumatoid arthritis. We aimed to assess the relationship between AMPA profiles and radiographic progression in patients with new-onset rheumatoid arthritis. METHODS In this cohort study, we obtained samples and data from the Scottish Early Rheumatoid Arthritis (SERA) inception cohort and biobank, which recruited patients with new-onset rheumatoid arthritis or undifferentiated arthritis who had at least one swollen joint from 20 hospitals across Scotland. AMPAs in plasma samples were measured by ELISAs at baseline. Paired radiographs of the hands and feet were taken at baseline and at 1 year and were scored with the Sharp-van der Heijde (SvH) method. We calculated differences in radiographic progression using estimated marginal mean changes between baseline and 1 year, with the baseline values of radiographic variables, rheumatoid factor, sex, age at recruitment, symptom duration, and Disease Activity Score 28 with C-reactive protein included as covariates. FINDINGS Between March 1, 2011, and April, 30, 2015, 1073 patients were recruited to the SERA study. 362 patients with rheumatoid arthritis were included in our study and had their AMPA profiles determined. Patients were grouped into four main autoantibody profiles by reactivities to post-translational modifications: single positivity for anti-citrullinated peptide antibodies (ACPAs; 73 [20%]); double positivity for ACPAs and anti-acetylated peptide antibodies (AAPAs; 45 [12%]); triple positivity for ACPAs, AAPAs, and anti-carbamylated peptide antibodies (151 [42%]); and AMPA negativity (74 [20%]). 19 (5%) patients were in one of the minor autoantibody groups. Of the 233 patients with both antibody data and radiographs of sufficient quality, triple-positive patients had more radiographic progression between baseline and 12 months (estimated mean change in total SvH score 1·8, 95% CI 0·9-2·6, SE 0·4) than did single-positive patients (0·5, 0·1-1·0, 0·2; estimated mean difference in the total change in SvH score 1·2, 95% CI 0·1-2·4, SE 0·5). There was no difference in radiographic progression between single positive patients and AMPA negative patients (estimated mean change in total SvH score 0·7, 95% CI 0·1-1·4, SE 0·3; estimated mean difference in the total change in SvH score -0·2, 95% CI -1·1 to 0·7, SE 0·4). INTERPRETATION This study suggests that the optimal prediction of future rates of radiographic progression in patients with rheumatoid arthritis will require an assessment of autoantibodies against multiple post-translationally modified proteins or peptides. Abstract
Introduction Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is categorized as an autoimmune disease with a frequency of 0.2–1% worldwide. It is reported that various autoantibodies are produced in the RA population, particularly against citrullinated peptides. Among various candidate markers for RA diagnosis, the citrullinated proteins have the highest specificity and sensitivity for both diagnosis and prognosis of RA. Anti-mutated citrullinated vimentin and α-enolase constitute a new class of autoantibodies for early detection of RA. Material and methods 45 serum samples and 19 synovial fluid (SF) specimens collected from RA patients were considered for American College of Rheumatology criteria and 20 serum samples and 10 SF specimens were provided from healthy subjects as a control group. To assess the quantity of anti-citrullinated protein antibodies (ACPA), anti-mutated citrullinated vimentin (MCV) and anti-α-enolase in the serum and SF of RA patients were determined by the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method. For the evaluation of disease activity and joint destruction, we used the Disease Activity Score of 28 joints based on erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) Disease Activity Score 28 (DAS28). Furthermore, to measure the molecular weight of vimentin and α-enolase, electrophoresis on 10% SDS-PAGE was performed as described before. Results The anti-α-enolase level among serum samples from RA patients was significantly higher than in healthy subjects (4.49 ±0.20 ng/ml vs. 0.76 ±0.12 ng/ml) (p < 0.001). There was a direct relation between α-enolase quantity and (rheumatoid factor) RF and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels. The mean ESR value in positive and negative ACPA patients was 38.2 ±22.6 mm/h and 9.2 ±5.8 mm/h respectively (p < 0.0001). The mean DAS28-ESR was 3.3. The level of anti-MCV in the serum of RA patients (244.6 ±53.3 U/ml) was higher than in serum of the healthy group (148.73 ±71.8) (p < 0.0001). The level of anti-MCV in the SF of patients was 687.5 ±148.4 U/ml. Conclusions In conclusion, both autoantibodies against MCV and α-enolase are two important markers that increase in serum and SF of RA patients and are specific for diagnosis of RA disease.

Abstract
Background The development of autoantibodies in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) has potential as a marker of treatment response. This analysis assessed the association of an autoantibody response to carbamylated vimentin (anti-CarbV) and to vimentin modified by citrullination (anti-MCV) with response to treatment and structural damage progression in the phase III study RA-BEGIN. Methods Data from patients in the modified intent-to-treat population of RA-BEGIN were included for analysis; these patients received methotrexate (MTX), baricitinib 4 mg once daily, or baricitinib plus MTX during the 52-week study period. Endpoints analyzed were clinical response to treatment, assessed using change from baseline (CFB) in Simplified Disease Activity Index (SDAI) and Disease Activity Score for 28-joint count with serum high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (DAS28-hsCRP), and structural damage progression, assessed using CFB greater than the smallest detectable change in the van der Heijde-modified Total Sharp Score. The anti-CarbV and anti-MCV isotypes assessed were immunoglobulin (Ig) A, IgG, and IgM. Multivariable mixed-effect models for repeated measures (MMRMs) were used for the longitudinal analysis of treatment response, and multivariable logistic regression models were used for the analysis of structural damage progression at week 52. Results Analysis of the association between autoantibodies and treatment response showed that high titers of anti-CarbV (IgA and IgG) were associated with a greater clinical response as measured by SDAI and DAS28-hsCRP. Anti-CarbV IgA and IgG, but not IgM, demonstrated an association after adjustment for other factors included in the MMRMs. High titers of anti-CarbV IgM were associated with a poor response to MTX monotherapy, whereas a nonsignificant trend toward a better response to baricitinib and baricitinib plus MTX was observed. There was no association between anti-MCV antibodies and treatment response. High titers of anti-CarbV IgA were associated with a greater probability of radiographic progression, but no association between anti-MCV antibodies and radiographic progression was observed. Conclusions High titers of anti-CarbV IgA and IgG isotypes, but not anti-MCV isotypes, may be useful prognostic biomarkers for identifying the likelihood of the response to treatment and structural damage progression in patients with RA.

Abstract
To measure the serum levels of anticarbamylated protein (CarP) antibodies in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in China and to evaluate the association of anti-CarP antibodies with clinical parameters and disease activity. 260 Chinese patients with RA, 40 patients with osteoarthritis (OA), 88 patients with spondyloarthritis (SpA) and 77 healthy controls were included. The serum levels of anti-CarP antibodies were detected by ELISA. Blood tests to detect the anticyclic citrullinated peptide (CCP) antibody level, rheumatoid factor (RF) level, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, C reactive protein level and Disease Activity Score in 28 joints using the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (DAS28-ESR) were performed by standard methods. Bone erosion was assessed by colour Doppler ultrasonography. A total of 18.8% of patients with RA and 9.4% of anti-CCP antibody and RF-double-negative patients were positive for anti-CarP antibody. The anti-CarP antibody level was significantly higher in patients with RA than in patients with OA or SpA and in healthy controls. Univariate and multivariate analyses showed that the level of anti-CarP antibody was positively correlated with DAS28-ESR; the higher a level of serum anti-CarP antibody, the higher the DAS28-ESR score. Anti-CarP-positive patients had higher disease activity scores than anti-CarP-negative patients. Moreover, anti-CarP-positive patients had a higher risk of developing bone erosion. The anti-CarP antibody was found to play an important role in the diagnosis of RA, especially in anti-CCP antibody and RF-double-negative patients. The anti-CarP antibody is a potential marker of disease activity and bone erosion in RA.

Abstract
There is an emerging understanding that an individual's risk for future rheumatoid arthritis (RA) can be determined using a combination of factors while they are still in a state where clinically-apparent inflammatory arthritis (IA) is not yet present. Indeed, this concept has underpinned several completed and ongoing prevention trials in RA. Importantly, risk factors can be divided into modifiable (e.g. smoking, exercise, dental care and diet) and non-modifiable factors (e.g. genetics, sex, age). In addition, there are now several biomarkers including autoantibodies, inflammatory markers and imaging techniques that are highly predictive of future clinically-apparent IA/RA. Although none of the prevention studies have yet provided major breakthroughs, several of them have provided valuable insights that can help to improve the design of future clinical trials and enable RA prevention. In aggregate, these findings suggest that the most accurate disease prediction models will require the combination of demographic and clinical information, biomarkers and potentially medical imaging data to identify individuals for intervention. This review summarizes some of the key aspects around precision medicine in RA with special focus on disease prediction and prevention.

Abstract
Several autoantibodies against proteins with post-translational modifications have been detected in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and are called anti-modified protein antibodies (AMPAs). Anti-carbamylated protein antibodies (Anti-CarP Ab) are the second most vigorously researched AMPAs following anti-citrullinated protein/peptide antibodies (ACPA). Anti-CarP Ab and ACPA show cross-reactivity to some extent and frequently co-exist with each other in RA, but are two distinct antibodies. Although the diagnostic efficacy of anti-CarP Ab is inferior to that of ACPA, the diagnostic specificity of RA may improve when used in combination with ACPA and rheumatoid factor. Anti-CarP Ab and ACPA are also useful for identifying patients at high risk of more severe joint destruction and cardiovascular diseases. The high prevalence of the co-existence of both antibodies suggests a common factor in their production, and this is important for the development of RA because both antibodies emerge before the onset of clinical symptoms. Neutrophils may also be crucially involved. It is important to distinguish citrullinated antigens from carbamylated antigens because the methods commonly used to detect the former are now known to be cross-reactive with the latter. Research on anti-CarP Ab will provide novel insights into the pathology and etiology of RA.

Abstract
Carbamylation is a post-translational modification that mostly affects proteins with low turnover, such as dermal proteins. Carbamylated proteins accumulate in skin in an age-dependent manner, contributing to tissue alterations. As dermis is affected by systemic sclerosis (SSc) and anti-carbamylated protein antibodies (anti-CarP Ab) are found in SSc patients, we sought to evaluate the specificity of anti-CarP Ab and their relationship with clinical parameters reflecting skin involvement in SSc. This study investigated serum samples and clinical data from 124 patients with SSc. Anti-CarP Ab were affinity purified from pooled SSc sera, and their specificity was assessed by western blotting and ELISA with carbamylated proteins from two species (human and bovine albumin; human fibrinogen). Anti-CarP Ab were measured in SSc serum samples and in 41 healthy aged-matched individuals. Affinity-purified anti-CarP Ab recognized carbamylated epitopes irrespective of the protein type or species origin. Anti-CarP Ab levels inversely correlated with the modified Rodnan skin score (mRss) (Spearman's R = -0.32, p<0.001), independently of patients' age. Receiver operating characteristics (ROC) analysis identified anti-CarP Ab cut-offs that best discriminated dichotomized clinical variables related to skin involvement: the only clinical variables that were significantly different between groups were mRss (p = 0.001) and scleredema (p<0.001). Low anti-CarP Ab levels were associated with worse skin involvement. Future prospective studies are needed to assess their usefulness in the clinical setting.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determinate the diagnostic value of an antibody against a citrullinated fibrinogen peptide in Cuban patients with rheumatoid arthritis, using an enzyme immunasay. MATERIALS AND METHODS A citrullinated peptide of fibrinogen designed by informatics prediction was synthesized and used in an enzyme immunoassay. The participants were 81 patients with early disease, 81 patients with established disease, 58 patients with other rheumatic and inflammatory diseases, and 43 healthy individuals. Anti- citrullinated fibrinogen peptide, anti-mutated citrullinated vimentin, anti second generation citrullinated peptides and rheumatoid factor antibodies were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. RESULTS Determination of anti-citrullinated peptide of fibrinogen antibodies by the designed enzyme immunoassay showed the best diagnostic value in early rheumatoid arthritis patients, with the highest value sensitivity (84%), negative predictive value (85%), Youden index (0.73%) and area under the receiver operating curve (0.9192). Specificity (89%) and positive predictive value (88%) were higher than rheumatoid factor, similar to anti- mutated citrullinated vimentin, but lower than second generation anti-citrullinated peptides assay. The positivity of C-reactive protein was associated with the presence of anti- citrullinated fibrinogen peptide antibodies and the titres of these antibodies correlated with clinical activity in early disease. CONCLUSIONS The immunoassay designed with a citrullinated fibrinogen peptide has a high diagnostic value and can identify patients with greater clinical activity in early rheumatoid arthritis.

Abstract
Objectives: To evaluate levels of anti-carbamylated protein (anti-CarP) antibodies in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients and to determine their association with serological parameters and disease activity. Methods: A cross-sectional study involving 105 multiethnic RA patients (48 rheumatoid factor [RF]-positive and 57 RF-negative patients) was conducted at Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia, Kelantan, Malaysia, from January 2015 to February 2016. Fifty healthy controls (HCs) were included. C-reactive protein (CRP), RF, anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide (anti-CCP) and anti-CarP antibodies were measured. A health assessment questionnaire (HAQ) was administered to the study participants and 28-joint Disease Activity Score (DAS28) were obtained. Results: The level of anti-CarP antibodies was significantly increased in the RA patients compared with HCs (p=0.042). The presence of anti-CarP antibodies was significantly associated with RF (p=0.019) and the HAQ (p=0.010). A significant association between the presence of anti-CarP antibodies and the DAS28 was not found (p=0.632). Conclusion: Our study provides further evidence that the level of anti-CarP antibodies is significantly elevated in RA patients.

Abstract
Protein carbamylation refers to a nonenzymatic modification, which consists in the binding of isocyanic acid on protein functional groups. This reaction is responsible for the alteration in structural and functional properties of proteins, which participate in their molecular aging. Protein molecular aging is now considered a molecular substratum for the development of chronic and inflammatory diseases, including atherosclerosis, chronic kidney disease, or rheumatoid arthritis. As a consequence, carbamylation-derived products have been proposed as interesting biomarkers in various pathological contexts and appropriate analytical methods have been developed for their quantification in biological fluids. The purpose of this review is (i) to describe the biochemical bases of the carbamylation reaction, (ii) to explain how it contributes to protein molecular aging, (iii) to provide evidence of its involvement in aging and chronic diseases, and (iv) to list the available biomarkers of carbamylation process and the related analytical methods.

Abstract
Objectives. Anti-carbamylated protein (anti-CarP) antibodies are detected in RA patients. Fetal calf serum is used as an antigen source in anti-CarP ELISA, and the precise target antigens have not been found. We aimed to identify the target antigens of anti-CarP antibodies. Methods. Western blotting of anti-CarP antibodies was conducted. Anti-carbamylated human albumin (CarALB) antibody was detected by in-house ELISA for 493 RA patients and 144 healthy controls (HCs). An inhibition ELISA of anti-CarP antibodies by CarALB and citrullinated albumin (citALB) was performed using eight RA patients’ sera. Serum CarALB was detected by liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectroscopy (LC/MS/MS), and the serum MPO concentration was measured by ELISA. Results. We focused on carbamylated albumin because it corresponded to the size of the thickest band detected by western blotting of anti-CarP antibodies. Anti-CarALB antibody was detected in 31.4% of RA patients, and the correlation of the titres between anti-CarALB and anti-CarP was much closer than that between anti-citALB and anti-CCP antibodies (ρ = 0.59 and ρ = 0.16, respectively). The inhibition ELISA showed that anti-CarP antibodies were inhibited by CarALB, but not by citALB. CarALB was detected in sera from RA patients by LC/MS/MS. The serum MPO concentration was correlated with disease activity and was higher in RA patients with anti-CarALB antibody than in those without. Conclusion. We found that carbamylated albumin is a novel target antigen of anti-CarP antibodies, and it is the first reported target antigen that has not been reported as the target of ACPA.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Smoking has been connected to citrullination of antigens and formation of anti-citrullinated peptide antibodies (ACPAs) in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Since smoking can modify proteins by carbamylation (formation of homocitrulline), this study was conducted to investigate these effects on vimentin in animal models and RA. METHODS The efficiency of enzymatic carbamylation of vimentin was characterised. B-cell response was investigated after immunisation of rabbits with different vimentin isoforms. Effects of tobacco smoke exposure on carbamylation of vimentin and formation of autoantibodies were analysed in mice. The antibody responses against isoforms of vimentin were characterised with respect to disease duration and smoking status of patients with RA. RESULTS Enzymatic carbamylation of vimentin was efficiently achieved. Subsequent citrullination of vimentin was not disturbed by homocitrullination. Sera from rabbits immunised with carbamylated vimentin (carbVim), in addition to carbVim also recognised human IgG-Fc showing rheumatoid factor-like reactivity. Smoke-exposed mice contained detectable amounts of carbVim and developed a broad immune response against carbamylated antigens. Although the prevalence of anti-carbamylated antibodies in smokers and non-smokers was similar, the titres of carbamylated antibodies were significantly increased in sera of smoking compared with non-smoking RA. CarbVim antibodies were observed independently of ACPAs in early phases of disease and double-positive patients for anti-mutated citrullinated vimentin (MCV) and anti-carbVim antibodies showed an extended epitope recognition pattern towards MCV. CONCLUSIONS Carbamylation of vimentin is inducible by cigarette smoke exposure. The polyclonal immune response against modified antigens in patients with RA is not exclusively citrulline-specific and carbamylation of antigens could be involved in the pathogenesis of disease. Abstract
The presence of autoantibodies is one of the hallmarks of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). In the past few decades, rheumatoid factors (autoantibodies that recognize the Fc-tail of immunoglobulins) as well as anti-citrullinated protein antibodies (ACPAs) have been studied intensively. ACPAs recognize post-translationally modified proteins in which the amino acid arginine has been converted into a citrulline. More recently, other autoantibody systems recognizing post-translationally modified proteins have also gained attention, including autoantibodies recognizing fragmented immunoglobulin (anti-hinge antibodies), autoantibodies recognizing acetylated proteins and autoantibodies recognizing proteins that are modified by adducts formed under oxidative stress. In particular, detailed insights have been obtained on the presence and properties of autoantibodies recognizing carbamylated proteins, commonly called anti-carbamylated protein (anti-CarP) antibodies. In this Review, we summarize the current knowledge relating to these emerging autoantibodies that recognize post-translationally modified proteins identified in RA, with an emphasis on anti-CarP antibodies.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to investigate the presence and titer of anti-carbamylated 78-kDa glucose-regulated protein (anti-CarGRP78) antibody in serum from controls, and patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and primary Sjögren syndrome (pSS). Thirty-three RA patients, 20 SLE patients, 20 pSS patients, and 20 controls were enrolled from our outpatient clinic. GRP78 was cloned and carbamylated. Serum titers of anti- cyclic citrullinated peptides (anti-CCP), anti-GRP78, and anti-CarGRP78 were measured with an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. No differences in serum titers of anti-GRP78 antibody in patients with RA, SLE, or pSS compared with the controls were observed. Serum levels of anti-carGRP78 antibody in patients with RA, but not SLE or pSS, were significantly higher compared with the controls (OD405 0.15 ± 0.08 versus 0.11 ± 0.03, p = 0.033). There was a positive correlation between the serum levels of anti-GRP78 antibody, but not anti-CarGRP78 antibody, with the levels of anti-CCP antibody in patients with RA. Both anti-GRP78 and anti-carGRP78 antibodies failed to correlate with C-reactive protein levels in patients with RA. In conclusion, we demonstrated the presence of anti-CarGRP78 antibody in patients with RA. In addition, the serum titer of anti-CarGRP78 antibody was significantly elevated in patients with RA compared with the controls. Anti-CarGRP78 antibody could also be detected in patients with SLE or pSS.
