Abstract
BACKGROUND Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a prevalent malignancy of the digestive tract. A new prognostic scoring model for colon adenocarcinoma (COAD) is developed in this study based on the genes involved in tumor cell-mediated killing of T cells (GSTTKs), accurately stratifying COAD patients, thus improving the current status of personalized treatment. METHOD The GEO and TCGA databases served as the sources of the data for the COAD cohort. This study identified GSTTKs-related genes in COAD through single-factor Cox analysis. These genes were used to categorize COAD patients into several subtypes via unsupervised clustering analysis. The biological pathways and tumor microenvironments of different subgroups were compared. We performed intersection analysis between different subtypes to obtain intersection genes. Single-factor Cox regression analysis and Lasso-Cox analysis were conducted to establish clinical prognostic models. Two methods are used to assess the accuracy of model predictions: ROC and Kaplan-Meier analysis. Next, the prediction model was further validated in the validation cohort. Differential immune cell infiltration between various risk categories was identified via single sample gene set enrichment analysis (ssGSEA). The COAD model's gene expression was validated via single-cell data analysis and experiments. RESULT We established two distinct GSTTKs-related subtypes. Biological processes and immune cell tumor invasion differed significantly between various subtypes. Clinical prognostic models were created using five GSTTKs-related genes. The model's risk score independently served as a prognostic factor. COAD patients were classified as low- or high-risk depending on their risk scores. Patients in the low-risk category recorded a greater chance of surviving. The outcomes from the validation cohort match those from the training set. Risk scores and several tumor-infiltrating immune cells were strongly correlated, according to ssGSEA. Single-cell data illustrated that the model's genes were linked to several immune cells. The experimental results demonstrated a significant increase in the expression of HOXC6 in colon cancer tissue. CONCLUSION Our research findings established a new gene signature for COAD. This gene signature helps to accurately stratify the risk of COAD patients and improve the current status of individualized care.

Abstract
Background Globally, colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence is rising, and it is a leading cause of mortality, with greater death rates pronounced in developing countries, including Jordan. Understanding knowledge and awareness of etiologic factors, unhealthy lifestyles, and dietary patterns is crucial for combating ailments. Hence, this study is aimed at investigating the level of knowledge and awareness of CRC-related risk factors, practices, and possible associations of studied variables among young Jordanians. Methodology. A cross-sectional, observational study was conducted using an online self-reported assessment of anthropometrics, knowledge, awareness, and dietary and lifestyle practices toward CRC and its related risk factors. Results A study of 795 Jordanian university students found that 93.8% were Jordanians, 73.0% were female, aged 18-24, and single. Most participants were from medical and science schools (69.4%). The vast majority (about 84%) were found to have good knowledge and awareness of CRC and its risk factors, but this was not reflected in their dietary practices. There are significant differences in physical activity, smoking, vegetable consumption, and serving sizes of red meat and processed meats between the sexes. Academic study specialties significantly impact knowledge and awareness. Conclusion The study reveals that while young Jordanian university students have good knowledge and awareness about CRC and its risk factors, these levels are not reflected in their dietary behaviors and food choices for CRC prevention, highlighting the need for national programs to improve these practices, particularly in the younger population.

Abstract
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is responsible for a significant number of cancer-related fatalities worldwide. Researchers are investigating the therapeutic potential of ferroptosis, a type of iron-dependent controlled cell death, in the context of CRC. Curcumin, a natural compound found in turmeric, exhibits anticancer properties. This study explores the effects of curcumin on genes related to ferroptosis (FRGs) in CRC. To gather CRC data, we used the Gene Expression Profiling Interactive Analysis (GEPIA) and Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) databases, while FRGs were obtained from the FerrDb database and PubMed. We identified 739 CRC differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in CRC and discovered 39 genes that were common genes between FRGs and CRC DEGs. The DEGs related to ferroptosis were enriched with various biological processes and molecular functions, including the regulation of signal transduction and glucose metabolism. Using the Drug Gene Interaction Database (DGIdb), we predicted drugs targeting CRC-DEGs and identified 17 potential drug targets. Additionally, we identified eight essential proteins related to ferroptosis in CRC, including MYC, IL1B, and SLC1A5. Survival analysis revealed that alterations in gene expression of CDC25A, DDR2, FABP4, IL1B, SNCA, and TFAM were associated with prognosis in CRC patients. In SW480 human CRC cells, treatment with curcumin decreased the expression of MYC, IL1B, and EZH2 mRNA, while simultaneously increasing the expression of SLCA5 and CAV1. The findings of this study suggest that curcumin could regulate FRGs in CRC and have the potential to be utilized as a therapeutic agent for treating CRC.

Abstract
The current meta-analysis aims to investigate the existing articles that evaluated the implications of a positive family history of cancer on the risk of colorectal cancer (CRC) within the EMRO countries. We employed PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science as search databases for this study. To assess the quality of the selected articles, we utilized the Newcastle-Ottawa (NCO) checklist. In comparing the impact of a family history of cancer between the case and control groups, we computed the odds ratio (OR) along with its corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI). Finally, 27 articles were selected for meta-analysis. The result of the meta-analysis showed a significant association between the presence of a family history of CRC or any cancers and CRC (OR 2.21; 95% CI 1.54-3.17; P < 0.001, OR 1.76; 95% CI 1.27-2.42; P = 0.001, respectively). Our findings underscore the critical importance of timely screening and early identification for individuals with a family history of cancer. By fostering close coordination among healthcare facilities and actively promoting the adoption of screening methods for early detection, we have the potential to significantly reduce both mortality rates and financial burdens of CRC on the general public, ultimately leading to enhanced patient outcomes.

Abstract
Colorectal cancer (CRC) accounts for considerable mortalities worldwide. Several modifiable risk factors, including a high intake of certain foods and beverages can cause CRC. This review summarized the latest findings on the intake of various foods, nutrients, ingredients, and beverages on CRC development, with the objective of classifying them as a risk or protective factor. High-risk food items include red meat, processed meat, eggs, high alcohol consumption, sugar-sweetened beverages, and chocolate candy. Food items that are protective include milk, cheese and other dairy products, fruits, vegetables (particularly cruciferous), whole grains, legumes (particularly soy beans), fish, tea (particularly green tea), coffee (particularly among Asians), chocolate, and moderate alcohol consumption (particularly wine). High-risk nutrients/ingredients include dietary fat from animal sources and industrial trans-fatty acids (semisolid/solid hydrogenated oils), synthetic food coloring, monosodium glutamate, titanium dioxide, and high-fructose corn sirup. Nutrients/ingredients that are protective include dietary fiber (particularly from cereals), fatty acids (medium-chain and odd-chain saturated fatty acids and highly unsaturated fatty acids, including omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids), calcium, polyphenols, curcumin, selenium, zinc, magnesium, and vitamins A, C, D, E, and B (particularly B6, B9, and B2). A combination of micronutrients and multi-vitamins also appears to be beneficial in reducing recurrent adenoma incidence.

Abstract
Background Smoking poses a significant risk for colorectal cancer (CRC), considered the third leading reason for cancer-related deaths worldwide. However, there has been limited research on the relationship between smoking and CRC in the Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office (EMRO). Therefore, a meta-analysis was conducted to combine available data and gain a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between smoking and CRC in EMRO. Methods Two independent researchers searched PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science until December 2022. The included studies were checked for risk of bias administering the Newcastle-Ottawa scale. Heterogeneity was evaluated using I2 statistics and the Cochrane test. Publication bias was determined through funnel plot analysis and Egger's regression test. Additionally, a meta-regression analysis explored the impact of a country's Human Development Index (HDI) on the relationship between smoking and CRC. Results The final analysis included 26 studies, revealing a significant association between smoking and CRC (OR = 1.40; 95% CI: 1.11 - 1.78; P = 0.004). Moreover, smoking had a more pronounced adverse effect on CRC in countries with higher HDIs compared to those with lower HDIs (OR = 1.30; 95% CI: 0.99 - 1.71; P = 0.054). Conclusions Our findings underscore the importance of implementing smoking cessation programs and policies in EMRO countries, as they demonstrate a positive relationship between smoking and the risk of CRC. Furthermore, the results suggest that a country's level of human development may influence the association between smoking and CRC. Further research is needed to investigate this potential connection and develop targeted public health interventions.

Abstract
Objective Colon adenocarcinoma (COAD) is one of the leading causes of cancer death worldwide. Alternative polyadenylation (APA) is relevant to the variability of the 3'-UTR of mRNA. However, the posttranscriptional dysregulation of APA in COAD is poorly understood. Methods We collected APA data from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) COAD (n =7692). APA events were evaluated using PDUI values, and the prognostically significant APA events were screened by LASSO Cox regression to construct a prognostic model. Then, prognostic model functions and possible regulatory genes of characteristic APA events were analyzed. Finally, the immune regulatory network based on APA regulatory genes was analyzed and established. Results A total of 95 APA events were found to influence the COAD outcomes. Among them, 39 genes were screened as characteristic prognostic APA events by LASSO Cox regression to construct a COAD prognostic signature. The analysis results suggested that a high signature score was associated with poor prognosis and was significantly correlated with a variety of immune cells, including NK and Th1, 2 and 17 cells. Further analysis showed that APA regulators mainly served roles in the prognosis of COAD. Based on the above results, we constructed an immunoregulatory network for APA regulatory genes-APA genes-immune cells. Conclusion Our study revealed that APA events in COAD may regulate tumor progression by influencing immune cells, which provides a new direction for exploring the influencing mechanism of the tumor immune microenvironment and is expected to provide a potential new target for COAD immunotherapy.

Abstract
This review aimed to map current evidence on the association between dietary factors and colorectal cancer (CRC) risk in Asia. This review was conducted based on Arksey and O'Malley methodological framework. Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) flow diagram was used to record the review process. For the purpose of searching for articles, three electronic databases namely PubMed, EBSCOHost and ScienceDirect were employed. The inclusion criteria for articles selection were articles with association analysis between diet and CRC risk among Asians, had adults as participants, articles were written in English, open-accessed and published between years 2009 and 2021. Thus, 35 out of 369 screened articles were eventually included in this review which covered 28 case-control studies, six prospective cohort studies and one randomised clinical trial. Foods such as meats, alcohol and westernised diet have been shown to be associated with increase of CRC risk while fruits, vegetables and traditional meals decreased the risk of CRC. Only a few interventional and dietary patterns studies were identified. Specific single foods and nutrients and dietary patterns have been found to increase the risk but also protected the Asian population against CRC. The findings of this review will guide health professionals, researchers and policy makers to conduct a suitable study design and topic for future research.

Abstract
Dairy products are nutritious food items that contain various essential nutrients, however, it has been proven that residual antibiotics have contaminated such products. These residues can cause several side effects on human health. They increase antimicrobial resistance against several threatening microorganisms, as well as significant growth in allergenic reactions. Various methods, including heat treatments, have been applied to alleviate and reduce the effect of antibiotic residue level in milk and milk products. Changes in drug levels were not significantly remarkable, obliging researchers to find new approaches to prevent or reduce their risk and limit their complications on human health.

Abstract
Background Epidemiological studies have demonstrated an association between the degree of food processing in our diet and the risk of various chronic diseases. Much of this evidence is based on the international Nova classification system, which classifies food into four groups based on the type of processing: (1) Unprocessed and minimally processed foods, (2) Processed culinary ingredients, (3) Processed foods, and (4) "Ultra-processed" foods (UPF). The ability of the Nova classification to accurately characterise the degree of food processing across consumption patterns in various European populations has not been investigated so far. Therefore, we applied the Nova coding to data from the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) in order to characterize the degree of food processing in our diet across European populations with diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds and to validate this Nova classification through comparison with objective biomarker measurements. Methods After grouping foods in the EPIC dataset according to the Nova classification, a total of 476,768 participants in the EPIC cohort (71.5% women; mean age 51 [standard deviation (SD) 9.93]; median age 52 [percentile (p)25-p75: 58-66] years) were included in the cross-sectional analysis that characterised consumption patterns based on the Nova classification. The consumption of food products classified as different Nova categories were compared to relevant circulating biomarkers denoting food processing, measured in various subsamples (N between 417 and 9,460) within the EPIC cohort via (partial) correlation analyses (unadjusted and adjusted by sex, age, BMI and country). These biomarkers included an industrial transfatty acid (ITFA) isomer (elaidic acid; exogenous fatty acid generated during oil hydrogenation and heating) and urinary 4-methyl syringol sulfate (an indicator for the consumption of smoked food and a component of liquid smoke used in UPF). Results Contributions of UPF intake to the overall diet in % grams/day varied across countries from 7% (France) to 23% (Norway) and their contributions to overall % energy intake from 16% (Spain and Italy) to >45% (in the UK and Norway). Differences were also found between sociodemographic groups; participants in the highest fourth of UPF consumption tended to be younger, taller, less educated, current smokers, more physically active, have a higher reported intake of energy and lower reported intake of alcohol. The UPF pattern as defined based on the Nova classification (group 4;% kcal/day) was positively associated with blood levels of industrial elaidic acid (r = 0.54) and 4-methyl syringol sulfate (r = 0.43). Associations for the other 3 Nova groups with these food processing biomarkers were either inverse or non-significant (e.g., for unprocessed and minimally processed foods these correlations were -0.07 and -0.37 for elaidic acid and 4-methyl syringol sulfate, respectively). Conclusion These results, based on a large pan-European cohort, demonstrate sociodemographic and geographical differences in the consumption of UPF. Furthermore, these results suggest that the Nova classification can accurately capture consumption of UPF, reflected by stronger correlations with circulating levels of industrial elaidic acid and a syringol metabolite compared to diets high in minimally processed foods.

Abstract
Ultra-processed foods (UPFs) have become increasingly dominant globally, contributing to as much as 60% of total daily energy intake in some settings. Epidemiological evidence suggests this worldwide shift in food processing may partly be responsible for the global obesity epidemic and chronic disease burden. However, prospective studies examining the association between UPF consumption and cancer outcomes are limited. Available evidence suggests that UPFs may increase cancer risk via their obesogenic properties as well as through exposure to potentially carcinogenic compounds such as certain food additives and neoformed processing contaminants. We identify priority areas for future research and policy implications, including improved understanding of the potential dual harms of UPFs on the environment and cancer risk. The prevention of cancers related to the consumption of UPFs could be tackled using different strategies, including behaviour change interventions among consumers as well as bolder public health policies needed to improve food environments.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is evidence of an inverse association between yoghurt intake and risk of colorectal cancer (CRC). We aimed at investigating the association between the intake of yoghurt and other dairy foods consumed in Iran and CRC risk. METHODS Our analysis included 4070 subjects within the IROPICAN (Iran Study of Opium and Cancer) study. Detailed information was collected by the use of validated questionnaires. We estimated adjusted odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for the association between the intake of total dairy products, and, separately, of yoghurt, milk, cheese, kashk, dough, cream, ice cream, and other milk products, and CRC using unconditional logistic regression analyses. The intake was categorized in tertiles. RESULTS Overall, we analyzed 865 cases and 3205 controls. Total dairy products intake was not associated with CRC. The OR for one tertile increase (OR_T) in yoghurt intake was 0.97 (95% CI 0.87-1.08) for CRC and 0.66 (95% CI 0.52-0.84) for proximal colon cancer. Cream intake was associated with CRC (OR_T3 = 1.33, 95% CI 1.08-1.64), colon (OR_T3 = 1.37, 95% CI 1.03-1.81), and proximal cancer (OR_T3 = 1.29, 95% CI 1.04-1.61). The OR of distal colon cancer for ice cream intake was 0.59 (95% CI 0.43-0.82). Other dairy products were not associated with CRC risk.

Abstract
It was highly controversial whether fermented dairy foods protect against colorectal cancer (CRC) because of conflicting results from current human epidemiologic studies; we therefore conducted this meta-analysis based on the case-control and cohort studies to estimate the holistic analyses. Finally, a total of seven case-control studies and ten cohort studies comprising a total of >20,000 cases were incorporated in the quantitative synthesis. Specifically, statistical evidence of significantly decreasing CRC risk in case-control studies was found to be associated with cheese intake (OR = 0.89, 95% CI = 0.82-0.97). In a subgroup analysis, cheese intake was correlated with lower colon cancer (OR = 0.89, 95% CI = 0.79-1.00) and rectal cancer (OR = 0.86, 95% CI = 0.74-1.00) risk in case-control studies. Furthermore, we also found that the higher intake of yogurt may lower the risk of rectal cancer (OR = 0.75, 95% CI = 0.65-0.88) in cohort studies. The consumption of fermented dairy foods may be relevant to decrease CRC risk in this meta-analysis. Abstract
Background: Ferroptosis induced by SLC7A11 has an important translational value in the treatment of cancers. However, the mechanism of SLC7A11 in the pathogenesis of colon adenocarcinoma (COAD) is rarely studied in detail. Methods: SLC7A11 expression was explored with The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) databases, and Western blot assay. The correlation of SLC7A11 expression with the abundance of infiltrating immune cells was evaluated via the TIMER database. The relation of SLC7A11 expression with immune cell markers was investigated via Gene Expression Profiling Interactive Analysis (GEPIA). The co-expression genes of SLC7A11 were screened by R packages, and the PPI was constructed via the STRING database. SLC7A11 and co-expressed gene modulators were selected by NetworkAnalyst and DSigDB database. The correlations between SLC7A11 and cancer immune characteristics were analyzed via the TIMER and TISIDB databases. Results: SLC7A11 is overexpressed in most tumors, including COAD. The expression level of SLC7A11 has a significant correlation with the infiltration levels of CD8+ T cells, neutrophils, and dendritic cells in COAD. The infiltrated lymphocyte markers of Th1 cell such as TBX21, IL12RB2, IL27RA, STAT1, and IFN-γ were strongly correlated with SLC7A11 expression. Five hub genes co-expressed with SLC7A11 that induce ferroptosis were identified, and mir-335-5p, RELA, and securinine have regulatory effects on it. SLC7A11 was negatively correlated with the expression of chemokines and chemokine receptors, such as CCL17, CCL19, CCL22, CCL23, CXCL14, CCR10, CX3CR1, and CXCR3, in COAD. Conclusion: SLC7A11 may play a role in induced ferroptosis and regulating tumor immunity, which can be considered as potential therapeutic targets in COAD.

Abstract
Background: Yogurt is known to be nutrient-rich and probiotic content, which gather optimism due to their potential role in preventing and managing cancers. The effect of yogurt consumption on colorectal cancer (CRC) is inconsistent. Objective: This study aims to investigate the association of yogurt consumption with the risk of CRC. Methods: Three databases, namely, PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase, were searched for all relevant studies from July 2021 on the association of yogurt consumption with CRC risk. We pooled the odds ratios (ORs) and their 95% CIs using a random-effects meta-analysis to assess the association. Results: Finally, 16 studies met the inclusion criteria and were chosen in the meta-analysis. Yogurt consumption was significant with lower risk of CRC risk in the overall comparison (OR = 0.87, 95% CI: 0.81–0.94), in the cohort studies (OR = 0.91, 95% CI: 0.86–0.97), and case-control studies (OR = 0.75, 95% CI: 0.65–0.85). With regard to subgroup analyses by study region, cancer type, publication year, and sex, yogurt consumption significantly decreased overall CRC, colon cancer, and distal colon cancer risks. In stratified analyses, we observed significantly decreased CRC risk in Europe and Africa and published after 2010 and overall population. Sensitivity analysis indicated the result is stable and there is no publication bias in the meta-analysis. Conclusions: Overall, this study indicated that yogurt intake was related to a decreased risk of CRC.

Abstract
PURPOSE Little is known about the combined effect of different lifestyle factors on CRC incidence among populations living in developing countries. In this study, we sought to create an Extended Healthy Lifestyle Index (EHLI) and to investigate its association with CRC risk in the Moroccan population. METHODS A large case-control study including 1516 cases and 1516 controls, matched on age, sex and center were recruited in 5 Moroccan university hospital centers between 2009 and 2017. EHLI scores, including 9 modifiable factors (smoking, alcohol consumption, physical activity intensity, BMI, fruit and vegetables consumption, drinks that promote weight gain, red and processed meat, relatively unprocessed cereals and/or pulses, and dairy products consumption) were assigned to lifestyle information derived from the participants. We assessed the score based on the answers on each of the nine lifestyle components as unhealthy/un-compliant (0 point), healthy/compliant (1 point) and 0.5 for partial compliance to the recommendation. Conditional logistic regression models were used to assess the association between the EHLI and CRC risk and to estimate multivariate ORs and their 95% confidence intervals (CIs). All potential confounder variables were considered. RESULTS After adjusting for potential confounding factors, a significant decrease in the risk of overall CRC was observed when comparing the highest EHLI category with the lowest index category (0.39, 95% CI: 0.33-0.47). These results did not differ by colon or rectum subsite. CONCLUSION Combined healthy lifestyle factors are associated with a significantly lower incidence of CRC in Moroccan populations. Prevention strategies should consider targeting of multiple lifestyle factors.

Abstract
AbstractObjectives:The current study aimed to develop a modified Mediterranean diet (MMD) score adjusted to the southern Mediterranean countries’ cultural specificities and to evaluate associations between adherence to this modified score and overweight/obesity risk in Moroccan adults.Design:Population-based cross-sectional study.Setting:Rural and urban areas of the five greatest provinces of Morocco.Participants:In total, 1516 participants were recruited between September 2009 and February 2017. Dietary assessment was obtained using a validated Moroccan FFQ. We constructed a MMD score focusing on twelve components. The MMD score ranged from 0 (no adherence to the traditional southern Mediterranean diet (MD)) to 12 (maximal adherence) and was categorised as low (scores 0–4), moderate (scores 5–7) and high (scores 8–12).Results:Among the whole population, 754 (50·5 %) were women and 738 (49·5 %) were men, and the mean age was about 55·60 ± 13·70. In total, 58 % of participants were moderately active. Regarding educational level, 50·7 % were illiterate. The prevalence of overweight and obesity was 43·3 and 8·6 %, respectively. In multivariate analyses, close adherence to MMD (scores 8–12) was associated with reduced overweight/obesity risk (OR 0·61, 95 % CI 0·44, 0·84).Conclusion:The prevalence of overweight and obesity was very high among Moroccan adults. Adherence to the traditional southern MD may help prevent overweight and obesity.

Abstract
Ferroptosis, implicated in several diseases, is a new form of programmed and nonapoptotic cell death triggered by iron-dependent lipid peroxidation after inactivation of the cystine/glutamate antiporter system xc-, which is composed of solute carrier family 7 membrane 11 (SLC7A11) and solute carrier family 3 membrane 2 (SLC3A2). Therefore, inducing ferroptosis through inhibiting the cystine/glutamate antiporter system xc- may be an effective way to treat cancer. In previous screening tests, we found that the benzopyran derivative 2-imino-6-methoxy-2H-chromene-3-carbothioamide (IMCA) significantly inhibited the viability of colorectal cancer cells. However, the impact of IMCA on ferroptosis remains unknown. Hence, this study investigated the effect of IMCA on ferroptosis and elucidated the underlying molecular mechanism. Results showed that IMCA significantly inhibited the cell viability of colorectal cancer cells in vitro and inhibited tumor growth with negligible organ toxicity in vivo. Further studies showed that IMCA significantly induced the ferroptosis of colorectal cancer cells. Mechanistically, IMCA downregulated the expression of SLC7A11 and decreased the contents of cysteine and glutathione, which resulted in reactive oxygen species accumulation and ferroptosis. Furthermore, overexpression of SLC7A11 significantly attenuated the ferroptosis caused by IMCA. In addition, IMCA regulated the activity of the AMPK/mTOR/p70S6k signaling pathway, which is related to the activity of SLC7A11 and ferroptosis. Collectively, our research provided experimental evidences on the activity and mechanism of ferroptosis induced by IMCA and revealed that IMCA might be a promising therapeutic drug for colorectal cancer.

Abstract
The current study aimed to investigate the relationship between red and white meat subtypes, processed meat (divided into traditional "Khlii, Kaddid" and industrially processed meat) and colorectal cancer (CRC) risk, considering CRC subsites, in Moroccan adults. A case-control study was conducted including 2,906 matched case-control pairs recruited from the five largest university hospitals in Morocco. Dietary data were collected through a validated Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ). Multivariable odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI), for the association of CRC risk with meat consumption (high vs. low intake), were estimated using conditional logistic regression models, adjusted for relevant confounding variables. Overall, consumption of red meat was positively associated with colon cancer and CRC risk (OR = 1.23, 95% CI = 1.05-1.44; OR = 1.14, 95% CI = 1.02-1.27), respectively. In contrast, no significant association was observed between the consumption of red meat and rectal cancer risk (OR = 1.05, 95% = 0.90-1.23). Interestingly, while processed meat from industrial processes was positively associated with colon cancer, rectal cancer and CRC (OR = 1.61, 95% CI = 1.27-2.04; OR = 1.73, 95% CI = 1.34-2.23; OR = 1.67, 95% CI = 1.41-1.98), processed meat prepared using traditional methods was inversely associated with colon cancer and CRC risk (OR = 0.74, 95% CI = 0.57-0.98; OR = 0.77, 95% CI = 0.64-0.93), respectively. Furthermore, positive associations were observed between poultry intake and colon cancer risk among men (OR = 1.27, 95% CI = 1.01-1.59). Our study showed similar associations between the consumption of red meat and CRC risk in Morocco as in developed countries, while inverse associations were found for traditionally processed meat products. This is the first study to investigate the differential effects of traditional vs. westernized processed meat products in a developing country. Other studies are needed to confirm these findings and to understand the physiological pathways underlying these associations.
