Unraveling the Complexities of Silica Nanoparticle Adsorption onto Polymer Latexes in Pickering Emulsion Polymerization

Incorporating unmodified silica nanoparticles onto polymer latexes to fabricate aqueous polymer dispersions without relying on electrostatic attraction during the Pickering emulsion polymerization process still faces challenges. For negatively charged silica nanoparticles to successfully adsorb onto polymer latexes, particularly in an anionic initiator emulsion polymerization system, they have remained elusive without the use of auxiliary monomers and cationic initiators. This study investigates various experimental parameters, such as emulsion polymerization temperature, monomer solubility, salt concentration, and cation type, to elucidate the factors influencing the adsorption of unmodified silica nanoparticles in Pickering emulsion polymerization. While poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)/SiO2 hybrid latexes can be obtained under pH conditions of 5-6 and at temperatures of 65 °C or below, the loading rate of silica nanoparticles decreases as the reaction temperature increases, resulting in bare PMMA latexes without silica nanoparticle adsorption at temperatures exceeding 70 °C. Introducing styrene (St) into the monomer mixture with methyl methacrylate in a ratio of up to 10 wt % leads to a gradual decrease in silica nanoparticle loading rate, from 27.3 to 8.2 wt %, attributed to the low solubility of St in water. Furthermore, the presence of sodium ions (Na+) is found to be crucial for silica nanoparticle adsorption onto PMMA latexes, as the sodium ions have a stabilizing effect on both the silica nanoparticles and the silica nanoparticle-armored latexes. These findings highlight the complex nature of Pickering emulsion polymerization in the presence of unmodified silica nanoparticles, demonstrating that the loading rate of silica nanoparticles onto polymer latexes is influenced by various factors. These insights pave the way for developing aqueous polymer dispersions with high silica nanoparticle loading rates onto polymer latexes, which is a desirable trait in the coating industry.

Synthesis, Structure, Properties, and Applications of Fluorinated Polyurethane

Fluorinated polyurethane (FPU) is a new kind of polyurethane (PU) material with great applicational potential, which is attributed to its high bond energy C-F bonds. Its unique low surface energy, excellent thermal stability, and chemical stability have attracted considerable research attention. FPU with targeted performance can be precisely synthesized through designing fluorochemicals as hard segments, soft segments, or additives and changes to the production process to satisfy the needs of coatings, clothing textiles, and the aerospace and biomedical industries for materials that are hydrophobic and that are resistant to weathering, heat, and flames and that have good biocompatibility. Here, the synthesis, structure, properties, and applications of FPU are comprehensively reviewed. The aims of this research are to shed light on the design scheme, synthesis method, structure, and properties of FPU synthesized from different kinds of fluorochemicals and their applications in different fields and the prospects for the future development of FPU.

Use of RAFT macro-surfmers for the synthesis of transparent aqueous colloids with tunable interactions

We propose a new method to produce fluorinated nanoparticles (NPs) based on ab initio reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) emulsion polymerization without the use of toxic surfactants. NP size, surface charge, and chemistry can be controlled via the adoption of different macromolecular transfer agents produced via RAFT polymerization of amphiphilic monomers. Thanks to this versatility, interparticle interactions can be easily tuned by changing solvent composition and temperature. In addition, the refractive index and density of the solvent can simultaneously match those of the NPs by adding sodium polytungstate, an organic salt widely used for density gradient centrifugation. These colloids may be used as model systems for the study of self-assembly and aggregation in aqueous media when optical methods are required.

Preparation and properties of lambda-cyhalothrin/polyurethane drug-loaded nanoemulsions

A new lambda-cyhalothrin/castor oil-based polyurethane formulation with controlled-release behavior and good foliage adhesion properties is prepared.

Anti-icing coating with an aqueous lubricating layer

In this paper, an anti-icing coating with an aqueous lubricating layer is reported. This anti-icing coating can be directly applied to various substrates, and the ice adhesion strength on the coated surfaces can be lowered greatly as compared to uncoated substrates. We demonstrate for the first time that the formed ice on this anti-icing coating can be blown off by a wind action in the wind tunnel with a controlled temperature and wind velocity. Moreover, the low ice adhesion of the anti-icing coating can be maintained even when the temperature is lowered to -53 °C. The robustness and durability of the anti-icing coating are proved by the icing/de-icing experiments. The results show that the anti-icing coating with an aqueous lubricating layer is of great promise for practical applications.
