Fabrication of Hydroxy-Terminated Polybutadiene with Piezoelectric Property by Functionalized Branch Chain Modification

Hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene (HTPB)-based piezoelectric polymer (m-HTPB) is prepared for the first time by functionalized branch chain modification strategy. In the presence of HTPB with >98.8% cis-1,4 content, the C=C bond partly breaks down, and functionalized acetylferrocene groups are introduced to the cis-1,4 polybutadiene branch chain, retaining the high cis-1,4 content of HTPB. The whole process is conducted under mild conditions, without complicated manipulations. The microstructure and molecular weight of m-HTPB are characterized by Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectra, ¹H or ¹³C nuclear magnetic resonance spectrum (NMR), and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The thermal properties of HTPB and m-HTPB are determined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Electrochemical investigations reveal that m-HTPB exhibits higher conductance compared with HTPB. The m-HTPB flexible piezoelectric polymer is further used for in situ and real-time pressure monitoring. This simple and effective strategy provides a promising polymeric material for flexible piezoelectric sensors.

Comparative Study on Thermal Response Mechanism of Two Binders during Slow Cook-Off

The HTPE (hydroxyl-terminated polyether) propellant had a lower ignition temperature (150 °C vs. 240 °C) than the HTPB (hydroxy-terminated polybutadiene) propellant in the slow cook-off test. The reactions of the two propellants were combustion and explosion, respectively. A series of experiments including the changes of colors and the intensity of infrared characteristic peaks were designed to characterize the differences in the thermal response mechanisms of the HTPB and HTPE binder systems. As a solid phase filler to accidental ignition, the weight loss and microscopic morphology of AP (30~230 °C) were observed by TG and SEM. The defects of the propellant caused by the cook-off were quantitatively analyzed by the box counting method. Above 120 °C, the HTPE propellant began to melt and disperse in the holes, filling the cracks, which generated during the decomposition of AP at a low temperature. Melting products were called the “high-temperature self-repair body”. A series of analyses proved that the different thermal responses of the two binders were the main cause of the slow cook-off results, which were likewise verified in the propellant mechanical properties and gel fraction test. From the microscopic point of view, the mechanism of HTPE’s slow cook-off performance superior to HTPB was revealed in this article.

Functionalized GO/Hydroxy-Terminated Polybutadiene Composites with High Anti-Migration and Ablation Resistance Performance

The migration of plasticizers such as nitroglycerin seriously affects the storage and working safety of rocket systems. In this work, hydroxy-terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) liner composites with the cross-linked structure were prepared by cross-linking isocyanate functionalized graphene oxide (IGO) with HTPB to prevent the migration of high energy plasticizers in the propellant. IGO was uniformly dispersed in the matrix as reinforcement and cross-linker, providing good migration resistance and ablation resistance for the liner composites. Compared with pure HTPB, the migration resistance of the liner with 0.5 wt% IGO increased by 18.94%, 16.33% and 15.34% at 25 °C, 60 °C and 90 °C, respectively. In addition, the ablation resistance of the HTPB liner was improved by the addition of IGO. The improved anti-migration properties come from the special laminar structure of IGO and the dense molecular chains network of the cross-linked composites.

Antibacterial Activity and Mechanism of ZnO/Cu2+-Chitosan/Montmorillonite

A new composite antibacterial material ZnO/Cu²⁺-Chitosan/Montmorillonite (ZCCM) was prepared with montmorillonite as carrier, Zn(Ac)₂•2H₂O, Cu(NO₃)₂•3H₂O and chitosan as raw materials. ZCCM was characterized by X-ray diffraction, nitrogen physical adsorption, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersion spectrometry. The antibacterial activity of ZCCM against Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhimurium, and Staphylococcus aureus was evaluated by minimal inhibitory concentration, minimum bactericidal concentration and the influence of growth curves. ZCCM displays excellent antibacterial activity which is higher than ZnO-Montmorillonite, Cu²⁺-Montmorillonite and ZnO/Cu²⁺-Montmorillonite. In addition, the antibacterial mechanism of ZCCM was investigated by analyzing bacterial morphology, integrity of cell membrane, lipid peroxidation and the effect of histidine on antibacterial activity of materials. It is found that cell morphologies of bacteria are damaged and bacterial cells are shrunken. With the increase of cell membrane permeability, the intracellular dissolved matters leak continuously. What's more, the reactive oxygen species are generated and biomacromolecules are oxidized.

Functional-modified polyurethanes for rendering surfaces antimicrobial: An overview

Antimicrobial surfaces and coatings are rapidly emerging as primary components in functional modification of materials and play an important role in addressing the problems associated with biofouling and microbial infection. Polyurethane (PU) consisting of alternating soft and hard segments has been one of the most important coating materials that have been widely applied in many fields due to its versatile properties. This review attempts to provide insight into the recent advances in antimicrobial polyurethane coatings or surfaces. According to different classes of antimicrobial components along with their antimicrobial mechanism, the synthesis pathways are presented systematically herein to afford polyurethane with antimicrobial properties. Also, the challenges and opportunities of antimicrobial PU coatings and surfaces are also discussed. This review will be beneficial to the exploitation and the further studies of antimicrobial polyurethane materials for a variety of applications.
