Abstract
Depression and osteoporosis are common diseases in dialysis patients. In addition, patients with osteoporosis are more susceptible to depression. Contrary to previous anti-osteoporosis agents, denosumab and romosozumab could be used in dialysis patients and have similar action mechanisms for blocking RANKL. RANKL causes bone resorption after binding RANKL, but binding with OPG leads to suppress of bone resorption. In recent mice study, inhibition of RANKL with denosumab improved depressive-like phenotype. Besides, it was found that OPG was associated with depression. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the association of depressive symptoms with RANKL and OPG in hemodialysis patients. We conducted a cross-sectional study with a total of 172 hemodialysis patients. The participants were measured for plasma RANKL, OPG, MMP-2, and MMP-9 levels. Logistic regression analysis was performed to evaluate the effect of RANKL and OPG on the presence of depressive symptoms. The depressive symptoms were observed in 90 (52.3%) subjects. RANKL tertile 3 had negative association with BDI score (β - 4.527, 95% CI - 8.310 to - 0.743) in univariate analysis, and this association persisted even after multivariate adjustments (β - 5.603, 95% CI - 9.715 to -1.491) in linear regression. In logistic regression between RANKL tertiles and depressive symptoms, RANKL tertile 3 had significantly lower unadjusted OR (0.40, 95% CI 0.19-0.86), and multivariate-adjusted OR (0.31, 95% CI 0.12-0.82) for depressive symptoms. OPG was not significantly associated with depressive symptoms. Higher plasma RANKL concentrations were significantly associated with lower depressive symptoms in HD patients.Trial registration WHO registry, No. KCT0003281, date: January 12, 2017.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Psychotic symptoms and elevated fasting blood glucose (FBG) are frequently observed in people with major depressive disorder (MDD), but there is a lack of research into this relationship within this cohort. AIMS This study aimed to preliminarily explore the prevalence of psychotic symptoms and their predictors among patients with MDD and elevated FBG. METHOD This study enrolled 1718 patients with first-episode and drug-naïve (FEDN) MDD. Sociodemographic data and physical and biochemical indicators were collected. Clinical symptoms were assessed with tools such as the Hamilton Rating Scale for Anxiety, Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HRSD) and Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale positive subscale. RESULTS The odds ratio for psychotic symptoms in those with MDD and elevated FBG (18.7%) was 2.33 times higher than those with MDD without elevated FBG. Presence of psychotic symptoms was significantly correlated with HRSD score, suicide attempts, and total cholesterol and thyroid-stimulating hormone levels. The combination of HRSD score, suicide attempts and thyroid-stimulating hormone levels among patients with MDD and elevated FBG effectively distinguished between individuals with and without psychotic symptoms, achieving an area under the curve of 0.87. CONCLUSIONS Psychotic symptoms are frequently observed among FEDN MDD patients with elevated FBG, and depressive symptoms, suicide attempts and thyroid-stimulating hormone levels are related to psychotic symptoms in this cohort.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM This study evaluated the association between rs1396409 and rs9883258 and the risk of schizophrenia (SCZ) and treatment outcomes in Egyptian patients. METHODS This study included 88 patients with SCZ and 88 healthy controls. Lipid profile was assayed. Genotyping of rs1396409 and rs9883258 polymorphisms was analyzed using real-time PCR. RESULTS The rs1396409 AG genotype frequency was significantly associated with SCZ risk (p = 0.002). Also, significant increased risk of SCZ was observed under allelic (p = 0.001), dominant (p = 0.001) and overdominant (p = 0.001) genetic model of rs1396409. However, rs9883258 AA genotype revealed nonsignificant association with SCZ. Cases with the rs1396409AG genotype exhibited hypertriglyceridemia (p < 0.001) and hypercholesterolemia (p = 0.001). In total, 72.3% and 74.5% of the cases presented with rs1396409 AG have negative symptoms (p = 0.022) and exhibited poor drug response (p = 0.023), respectively; all cases with rs1396409 GG genotype attempted suicide (p = 0.002) and are drug-free (p = 0.003). SCZ patients with negative symptoms had hypercholesterolemia (p = 0.008) mainly low-density lipoproteins (LDLc) (p = 0.016), and those with cognitive symptoms presented with low level of high-density lipoprotein (HDLc) (p = 0.023). Moreover, the multivariate regression analysis revealed that both rs1396409 G allele and HDLc were predictors of SCZ (p = 0.003 and 0.001, resp.). CONCLUSION The current study concluded that metabotropic glutamate receptor 7 (GRM7) rs1396409 AG could be a potential biomarker for SCZ diagnosis. It also revealed an independent association between the GRM7 rs1396409 G allele, HDLc and SCZ development.

Abstract
Bipolar disorder (BD) is a disabling disorder with heterogeneous symptom profiles and trajectories. Like many other neuropsychiatric disorders, clinical decision making related to diagnoses and choice of treatment is based on clinical assessments alone, and risk prediction for treatment success or resistance at an individual level remains sparse. An enormous effort to add biological markers to this risk prediction is ongoing. The role of lipids in normal brain functioning is well established, and several hypotheses about the role of lipids in the pathogenesis of neuropsychiatric disorders, including BD, have been made. The frequent comorbidity between neuropsychiatric disorders and cardiovascular disease, the genetic overlap of risk genes for severe mental disorders and genes involved in lipid regulation, and the lipid-altering effects of antipsychotics and mood stabilizers indicate that lipids could hold promise as biomarkers for neuropsychiatric disorders, including BD. To date, reviews of lipid biomarkers in schizophrenia and major depression have noted caveats for future investigations, while reviews of lipid biomarker research in BD is missing. In the current scoping review, we present a comprehensive overview of trends in previous research on lipid biomarkers in BD. The current literature varies greatly in the phenotypes investigated and study designs, leading to divergent findings. Small sample size; potential confounders related to physical activity, nutritional status, and medication use; and cross-sectional designs were frequently reported limitations. Future research may benefit from pivoting toward utilization of newer laboratory techniques such as lipidomics, but consistent use of study methods across cohorts is also needed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a common neuropsychiatry disorder with high prevalence and recurrence rate, but the misdiagnosis rate is inevitable due to the shortage of objective laboratory-based diagnostic criteria. This study is focused on the disturbance of lipid metabolism, providing potential biomarkers for diagnosing. METHODS Lipid metabolism-related molecules in plasma of 42 drug-naïve MDD patients and 49 healthy people were measured by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Further to evaluate the diagnostic values of changed metabolites, these molecules were evaluated by the receiver operating characteristic curve. Based on the significant role of phosphatidylcholine (PC) disturbance in depression, oxidization of PCs, oxidation of 1-palmitoyl-2-arachidonoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (OxPAPC), IL-8 and caspase-3 in hippocampus, and serum of chronic lipopolysaccharide (cLPS) depression mice were detected by ELISA. RESULTS Compared with healthy control, MDD patients expressed higher 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (16:0-16:0 PC, DPPC), 1-palmitoyl-2-arachidonoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (16:0-20:4 PC, PAPC), 1-palmitoyl-2-stearoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (16:0-18:0 PC), glycocholic acid, taurocholic acid, glycoursodeoxycholic acid, and chenodeoxycholic acid glycine conjugate, and lower 1-heptadecanoyl-2-hydroxy-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (LPC 20:0). The 16:0-20:4 PC showed the great diagnostic value for MDD with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.9519, and combination of 16:0 PC, 16:0-18:0 PC, and 16:0-20:4 PC exhibited the highest diagnostic value with AUC of 0.9602. OxPAPC was certified increase in hippocampus and serum of cLPS depression mice, which further supported PCs disorder participated in depression. CONCLUSION This research offers 16:0-20:4 PC as the latent diagnostic indicator for MDD and hints the important role of PCs in depression.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Recent studies have reported that psychotic symptoms are common in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). However, few studies have reported the relationship between thyroid function, lipid metabolism and clinical profiles in female MDD patients. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the prevalence of psychotic depression (PD) and its risk factors in first-episode and drug naive (FEDN) depression among the female population in China. METHODS This was a cross-sectional study involving a representative probability sample of 1,130 FEDN female outpatients with MDD (aged 18 years or older) in China. We collected information relating to socio-demographic characteristics, clinical data and blood samples. The Hamilton Depression Rating Scale 17-item version (HAMD-17), Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale 14-item version (HAMA-14), and Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) were used to evaluate depressive, anxiety, and psychotic symptoms. RESULTS The prevalence of psychotic symptoms in female MDD patients was 10.97%. The findings revealed significant differences between MDD female patients with psychotic symptoms and non-PD female patients in the following areas: higher HAMD scores, higher HAMA scores, more severe anxiety and an increased risk of suicide attempts. Further logistic regression analysis showed that psychotic symptoms were associated with higher thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels and an odds ratio of 1.168. CONCLUSIONS Our findings supported the hypothesis that higher TSH levels were correlated with psychotic symptoms in female MDD patients. Therefore, serum TSH levels may be a potential biomarker of PD in female MDD patients. In addition, we found that PD was closely associated with suicide attempts and lipid levels, but did not reach statistical significance.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Currently, there are no effective markers to diagnose and monitor patients with neuroendocrine tumors (NETs). The aim of this study was to assess bone metabolism based on selected markers of bone turnover: OST, OPG, and IGFBP-3, in both the group of patients with NETs and the control group. Associations with selected sociodemographic, biochemical, and clinicopathological characteristics were examined. We also evaluated any potential associations between these markers and selected biochemical markers of NETs commonly used in clinical practice. METHODS The study group included 60 patients with GEP-NETs and BP-NETs, while the control group comprised 62 healthy individuals. The serum concentrations of OST, OPG and IGFBP-3 were assessed using ELISA. RESULTS OST and OPG levels were significantly higher in the study group compared to the control group. In the study group, we observed a significant correlation between OPG and the clinical stage and chromogranin A. Additionally, an association was found between OPG and histological grade, Ki-67, and metastasis in GEP-NET cases. CONCLUSIONS Markers of bone turnover cannot be used in the routine diagnostics of neuroendocrine tumors. Nonetheless, these markers may help evaluate the skeletal system in patients with NETs. Further research is needed to determine the utility of osteocalcin (OST) and osteoprotegerin (OPG) as potential biomarkers for neuroendocrine tumors.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: Lipidomics is a pivotal tool for investigating the pathogenesis of mental disorders. However, studies qualitatively and quantitatively analyzing peripheral lipids in adult patients with schizophrenia (SCZ) and major depressive disorder (MDD) are limited. Moreover, there are no studies comparing the lipid profiles in these patient populations. Materials and Method: Lipidomic data for plasma samples from sex- and age-matched patients with SCZ or MDD and healthy controls (HC) were obtained and analyzed by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). Results: We observed changes in lipid composition in patients with MDD and SCZ, with more significant alterations in those with SCZ. In addition, a potential diagnostic panel comprising 103 lipid species and another diagnostic panel comprising 111 lipid species could distinguish SCZ from HC (AUC = 0.953) or SCZ from MDD (AUC = 0.920) were identified, respectively. Conclusions: This study provides an increased understanding of dysfunctional lipid composition in the plasma of adult patients with SCZ or MDD, which may lay the foundation for identifying novel clinical diagnostic methods for these disorders.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Abnormal blood lipid levels are common in individuals with bipolar disorder (BD). Previous studies have revealed lipid-mood associations in adults with BD, but no data on this relationship is available in youth populations. This cross-sectional study examined the associations of lipid levels with mood states and symptoms in a cohort of youth with BD. METHODS Participants were youth with BD and healthy controls (HCs) between the ages of 13-20 years. We compared the levels of total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), triglycerides (TG), and TG/HDL-C ratio between 4 participant episode groups: BD-euthymic (n = 28), BD-depressed (n = 29) BD-hypomanic/mixed (n = 31), and HCs (n = 89). We also examined for dimensional associations of lipids with mania and depression scores in the overall BD group and within BD episode subgroups. RESULTS TG levels were significantly higher in the BD-euthymic group (p = 0.008, d = 0.59) and in the BD-mixed/hypomanic group (p = 0.03, d = 0.44) compared to the HC group. TG/HDL-C ratio was also higher in the BD-euthymic group compared to the HC group (p = 0.01, d = 0.51). No dimensional associations were found between lipids and mood symptom scores in the overall BD group. However, within the BD-mixed/hypomanic subgroup, higher mania scores were associated with higher TG (β = 0.42, p = 0.04), TG/HDL-C ratio (β = 0.59, p = 0.002), and lower HDL-C (β = 0.56 p = 0.002). CONCLUSIONS Youth with BD demonstrate atherogenic lipid profiles. Higher atherogenic lipids were associated with hypomanic but, contrasting adult BD studies, not depressive symptoms. Future prospective studies are warranted to evaluate the temporal association between lipids and mood among youth with BD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We investigated the prospective bidirectional association between depressive symptoms and chronic lung disease (CLD) and explored biologically and behaviorally relevant mediators in this bidirectional association among Chinese middle-aged and older population in the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. METHODS Multivariable-adjusted Cox proportional hazard models were used to examine baseline depressive symptoms in relation to incident CLD risk among 12,546 adults and examine CLD condition in association with incidence of elevated depressive symptoms among 6,929 participants from 2011 to 2018. Elevated depressive symptoms were assessed with the 10-item Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression scale and CLD was determined by self-reported physician diagnosis. Causal mediation analysis was performed to examine the direct and indirect effects of a priori selected nine blood biomarkers and four lifestyle factors in the bidirectional association. RESULTS Elevated depressive symptoms significantly increased CLD risk by 68% (HR=1.68, 95%CI=1.46-1.93) after a mean follow-up of 5.9 years and the strong positive association was consistently shown in almost all the subgroups. Having positive CLD status at baseline was associated with 17% increased risk of developing elevated depressive symptoms (HR=1.17, 95%CI=1.01-1.35) during an average of 4.6 years follow-up period. Significant inflammatory, metabolic or pulmonary function related mediators were not identified. LIMITATIONS Inadequate follow-up time and limited mediator variable information may reduce chance of identifying significant mediators. CONCLUSIONS Elevated depressive symptoms and CLD were mutual risk factors in middle-aged and older Chinese adults. Early screening and treatment of depression is needed to reduce CLD risk and related comorbidities including new-onset depression so as to relieve substantial disease burdens of CLD and depression in China.

Abstract
Background Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a prevalent psychiatric disorder, with increasing evidence that patients with MDD display psychotic symptoms. Studies have shown the association between lipid levels and MDD, but few have explored the relationship between lipids and psychotic symptoms in MDD. The objective of this study was to compare the differences of lipid levels between patients with psychotic major depressive disorder (PMD) and those with non-psychotic major depressive disorder (NPMD) in first-episode and drug-naive (FEDN) MDD patients. Methods A total of 1718 outpatients with FEDN MDD were recruited. In addition to collecting basic information, their blood specimens were also collected to detect serum TC, HDL-C, TG, and LDL-C. The Hamilton depression scale (HAMD), Hamilton anxiety scale (HAMA), and Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) were used to assess their depression, anxiety, and psychotic symptoms respectively. Results Compared to those with NPMD, those with PMD had higher scores on HAMD, HAMA, and more elevated serum TC, TG, and LDL-C levels, but lower HDL-C levels (all p < 0.05). Further logistic regression analysis showed that TG, the severity of depressive and anxiety symptoms were significantly associated with psychotic symptoms (p < 0.05). Limitations No causal relationship could be drawn due to the cross-sectional design. Conclusions Psychotic symptoms in patients with MDD may be predicted by lipid levels in the future. Our findings suggest that TG seems to predict the presence of current psychotic features among patients with FEDN MDD.

Abstract
Schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD) are traditionally diagnosed and categorized through clinical assessment, owing to their complex heterogeneity and an insufficient understanding of their underlying pathology. However, disease progression and accurate clinical diagnosis become problematic when differentiating shared aspects amongst mental health conditions. Hence, there is a need for widely accessible biomarkers to identify and track the neurobiological and pathophysiological development of mental health conditions, including SSD. High-throughput omics applications involving the use of liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) are driving a surge in biological data generation, providing systems-level insight into physiological and pathogenic conditions. Lipidomics is an emerging subset of metabolomics, largely underexplored amongst the omics systems. Lipid profiles in the brain are highly enriched with well-established functions, including maintenance, support, and signal transduction of neuronal signaling pathways, making them a prospective and exciting source of biological material for neuropsychiatric research. Importantly, changes in the lipid composition of the brain appear to extend into the periphery, as there is evidence that circulating lipid alterations correlate with alterations of psychiatric condition(s). The relative accessibility of fluid lipids offers a unique source to acquire a lipidomic "footprint" of molecular changes, which may support reliable diagnostics even at early disease stages, prediction of treatment response and monitoring of treatment success (theranostics). Here, we summarize the latest fluid lipidomics discoveries in SSD-related research, examining the latest strategies to integrate information into multi-systems overviews that generate new perspectives of SSD-related psychosis identification, development, and treatment.

Abstract
Cholesterol and its oxygenated metabolites, including oxysterols, are intensively investigated as potential players in the pathophysiology of brain disorders. Altered oxysterol levels have been described in patients with numerous neuropsychiatric disorders. Recent studies have shown that Bipolar disorder (BD) is associated with the disruption of cholesterol metabolism. The present study was aimed at investigating the profile of oxysterols in plasma, their ratio to total cholesterol and their association with clinical parameters in patients with BD. Thirty three men diagnosed with BD and forty healthy controls matched for age and sex were included in the study. Oxysterol levels were measured by isotope-dilution ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Significantly higher levels were observed for cholestane-3β,5α,6β-triol, 27-hydroxycholesterol (27-OHC) and Cholestanol in patients with BD. The concentration of 24-hydroxycholesterol (24-OHC) was significantly lower in patients compared to controls. 24-OHC was also negatively correlated to MAS subscale score (r =-0.343; p = 0.049). In patients, 24-OHC was inversely correlated with age (r = -0.240; p = 0.045). Multivariate analysis found that BD acute decompensation was independently related to the rise in plasma 24-OHC (p = 0.002; OR = 0.966, 95 % CI [0.945 - 0.987]). However, the 24-OHC assay relevance as a biomarker of this disease deserves further investigation in other studies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a major cause of premature death in patients with psychotic disorders, where dyslipidemia occurs frequently. In the pathogenesis of these serious mental disorders, a low-grade inflammation seems to be a possible contributor. Concurrently, systemic inflammation and its interplay with dyslipidemia is a central driver in the pathogenesis of CVD. We hypothesize that evaluation of atherogenic lipid ratios together with inflammatory markers reflecting different inflammatory pathways with relevance for atherogenesis, could give novel information on immune-related mechanisms involved in early CVD risk in patients with psychotic disorders. METHODS As a measure for CVD risk we calculated atherogenic lipid ratios using established sex-specific cut-offs: Total cholesterol/high-density lipoprotein; HDL-c (TC/HDL) and triglyceride/HDL-c (TG/HDL) were evaluated in 571 schizophrenia (SCZ) and 247 bipolar disorder (BD) patients, and in 99 healthy controls (HC). In addition, as a measure of low-grade inflammation, we measured fasting plasma levels of nine stable atherogenic inflammatory markers in patients (SCZ, BD) and in HC. The elevated inflammatory markers and CVD risk in patients, as reflected by TC/HDL and TG/HDL, were further assessed in multivariable analyses adjusting for comorbid cardio-metabolic risk factors. RESULTS A markedly higher proportion (26%-31%) of patients had increased TC/HDL and TG/HDL ratios compared with HC. Plasma levels of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) and myeloperoxidase (MPO) were higher (p<0.05, p<0.001) in patients with psychotic disorders than in HC, and hs-CRP and MPO were independently associated with atherogenic lipid ratios in the multivariable analyses. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that low-grade inflammation and abnormal neutrophil activation may cause increased CVD risk in patients with psychotic disorders. These mechanisms should be further examined to determine the potential for development of novel risk evaluation strategies.

Abstract
In the present study, to improve the predictive performance of a model and its reproducibility when applied to an independent data set, we investigated the use of multimodel inference to predict the probability of having a complex psychiatric disorder. We formed training and test sets using proteomic data (147 peptides from 77 proteins) from two-independent collections of first-onset drug-naive schizophrenia patients and controls. A set of prediction models was produced by applying lasso regression with repeated tenfold cross-validation to the training set. We used feature extraction and model averaging across the set of models to form two prediction models. The resulting models clearly demonstrated the utility of a multimodel based approach to make good (training set AUC > 0.80) and reproducible predictions (test set AUC > 0.80) for the probability of having schizophrenia. Moreover, we identified four proteins (five peptides) whose effect on the probability of having schizophrenia was modified by sex, one of which was a novel potential biomarker of schizophrenia, foetal haemoglobin. The evidence of effect modification suggests that future schizophrenia studies should be conducted in males and females separately. Future biomarker studies should consider adopting a multimodel approach and going beyond the main effects of features.
