Are the effects of training on fat metabolism involved in the improvement of performance during high-intensity exercise?

Effect of Polarized Training on Cardiorespiratory Fitness of Untrained Healthy Young Adults: A Randomized Control Trial with Equal Training Impulse

To explore the effects of 8-week polarized training (POL), high-intensity interval training (HIIT), and threshold training (THR) interventions on the cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) of untrained healthy young adults. This study recruited 36 young adults and randomly assigned them to POL, HIIT, THR, or control (CG) groups to undergo an 8-week training intervention. The training impulse applied to all three intervention groups was identical. The training intensity was divided into Zone 1, 2, and 3 (Z1, Z2 and Z3) on the basis of the ventilatory thresholds (VT). The weekly training intensity distribution for POL was 75% of Z1 and 25% of Z3; HIIT was 100% of Z3 and THR was 50% of Z1 and 50% of Z2. Each group underwent Bruce protocol testing and supramaximal testing before, during, and after the intervention; relevant CRF parameters were assessed. 8 weeks of POL and HIIT significantly increased VT2 (p < 0.05); 8 weeks of POL, HIIT, THR and significantly increased VO2max and TTE (p < 0.05). The effect size of POL in relation to VO2max and TTE improvements was greater than that of HIIT and THR (g = 2.67 vs. 1.26 and 1.49; g = 2.75 vs. 2.05 and 1.60). Aerobic training models with different intensity distributions have different time effects on improving CRF. Relative to HIIT and THR, POL improved more variables of CRF. Therefore, POL is a feasible aerobic training method for improving CRF.

High Energetic Demand of Elite Rowing - Implications for Training and Nutrition

Purpose: Elite rowers have large body dimensions, a high metabolic capacity, and they realize high training loads. These factors suggest a high total energy requirement (TER), due to high exercise energy expenditure (EEE) and additional energetic needs. We aimed to study EEE and intensity related substrate utilization (SU) of elite rowers during rowing (EEE_ROW) and other (EEE_NON-ROW) training.

Methods: We obtained indirect calorimetry data during incremental (N = 174) and ramp test (N = 42) ergometer rowing in 14 elite open-class male rowers (body mass 91.8 kg, 95% CI [87.7, 95.9]). Then we calculated EEE_ROW and SU within a three-intensity-zone model. To estimate EEE_NON-ROW, appropriate estimates of metabolic equivalents of task were applied. Based on these data, EEE, SU, and TER were approximated for prototypical high-volume, high-intensity, and tapering training weeks. Data are arithmetic mean and 95% confidence interval (95% CI).

Results: EEE_ROW for zone 1 to 3 ranged from 15.6 kcal·min⁻¹, 95% CI [14.8, 16.3] to 49.8 kcal·min⁻¹, 95% CI [48.1, 51.6], with carbohydrate utilization contributing from 46.4%, 95% CI [42.0, 50.8] to 100.0%, 95% CI [100.0, 100.0]. During a high-volume, a high-intensity, or a taper week, TER was estimated to 6,775 kcal·day⁻¹, 95% CI [6,651, 6,898], 5,772 kcal·day⁻¹, 95% CI [5,644, 5,900], or 4,626 kcal∙day⁻¹, 95% CI [4,481, 4,771], respectively.

Conclusion: EEE in elite open-class male rowers is remarkably high already during zone 1 training and carbohydrates are dominantly utilized, indicating relatively high metabolic stress even during low intensity rowing training. In high-volume training weeks, TER is presumably at the upper end of the sustainable total energy expenditure. Periodized nutrition seems warranted for rowers to avoid low energy availability, which might negatively impact performance, training, and health.

Is the Energy Cost of Rowing a Determinant Factor of Performance in Elite Oarsmen?

In elite oarsmen, the rowing ergometer is a valuable tool for both training and studying rowing performance determinants. However, the energy cost of rowing, often reported as a determinant of performance, has never been described for ergometer rowing. Therefore, this study aimed to characterize the energy cost of ergometer rowing (ECR) in elite oarsmen, its contribution to 2,000 m performance, and its determinants. This study was conducted on 21 elite oarsmen from the French national team. It included an incremental exercise test up to exhaustion and an all-out performance test over 2,000 m, both conducted on a rowing ergometer. Gas exchange analysis was performed to calculate oxygen uptake and substrate utilization rate. Whole blood lactate concentrations during the incremental test were obtained from the earlobe. During the incremental test, ECR displayed a significant linear increase up to a plateau that reached a mean rowing speed of 5.23 ± 0.02 m⋅s^–1. The ECR values at 300, 350, and 400 W were positively correlated with performance expressed as the time required to perform the 2,000 m distance on the rowing ergometer. The same ECR values were found to be significantly related to fat oxidation (expressed in percentage of total energy supply) and blood lactate concentrations. This study provides the first description of ECR and of its relationship to exercise intensity on the rowing ergometer in elite oarsmen. ECR appeared to be a factor of performance and interestingly was related to energy supply from fat and blood lactate concentrations.

Effect of changes in blood fatigue indicators, inflammatory markers, and stress hormone levels on 100-m records of sprinters following an 8-week intense interval training

This study aimed to examine the changes in the blood fatigue indicators, inflammatory markers, and stress hormones following an 8-week intensity interval training in sprinters, and to investigate the effects on changes in the 100-m sprint records. Twenty sprinters from a boys’ high school were equally assigned to high-intensity and medium-intensity interval training groups, and three 60-min interval training sessions were performed per week for 8 weeks, for a total of 24 sessions. Exercise intensity was defined as 85%–95% and 75%–85% of heart rate reserve for high- and medium-intensity training, respectively. At rest, both groups had an exercise intensity of 60% of the heart rate reserve. Our results showed decreased fatigue indicators, inflammatory markers, and stress hormone levels after high-intensity and medium-intensity interval training, with no difference between the training levels. In addition, the 100-m sprint records were different in high- and medium-intensity interval training groups, based on the lactate dehydrogenase and adrenocorticotropic hormone levels. In conclusion, medium-intensity interval training with a reserve heart rate of ≥75% can have a positive effect on blood fatigue indicators, inflammatory markers, and stress hormones in sprinters. Specifically, the changes in adrenocorticotropic hormone level seen in the high-intensity interval training group were found to have a significant effect on the 100-m sprinting records.

Sildenafil improves exercise capacity in patients with cystic fibrosis: a proof-of-concept clinical trial

Background:

Exercise intolerance is a common phenotype observed in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). Treatment with sildenafil, a phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor, has previously been shown to improve exercise capacity (VO₂ peak) in other patient populations. Thus, the present study sought to determine the acute and subacute effects of sildenafil on exercise capacity in patients with CF.

Methods:

The present investigation utilized a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover study with an acute dose of either sildenafil (50 mg) or placebo (n = 13, age 25 ± 10), followed by a 4 week open-label extension with sildenafil (20 mg, TID; n = 15, age 23 ± 11). A comprehensive evaluation of pulmonary function and a maximal exercise test were each performed at every visit.

Results:

A significant increase in VO₂ peak was observed after the acute sildenafil dose with no changes following placebo (77 ± 13 versus 72 ± 13% predicted; p = 0.033). In addition, after 4 weeks of treatment, patients showed a significant increase in exercise capacity (72 ± 12 versus 75 ± 12% predicted; p = 0.028) and exercise duration (409 ± 98 versus 427 ± 101 s; p = 0.014). A robust correlation (r = 0.656; p = 0.008) between baseline FEV₁ (% predicted) and the change in exercise capacity following 4 weeks of treatment was identified.

Conclusions:

This proof-of-concept clinical trial demonstrates that sildenafil treatment can improve exercise capacity in patients with CF and that pulmonary function may play an important role in the effectiveness of treatment. Future investigations of sildenafil treatment in patients with CF are certainly warranted.

The relation between central variables, electromyography signals and peripheral microcirculation during intensive treadmill exercise

BACKGROUND

Aerobic exercise under muscle fatigue can lead to muscular damage and injuries. Finding the correlations between central and peripheral microcirculation variables, as well as with electromyography signals of leg muscles during aerobic exercise, may contribute to early muscle fatigue identification. The goal of this study was to characterize the peripheral compensation following intensive exercise for assessment of muscle performance based on non-invasive techniques.

METHODS

The experimental protocol included two days of measurements. Electrocardiography tests and anthropometric measurements of the volunteers (N = 14) were carried out. The maximal aerobic ability (first day), as well as electromyography and cutaneous hemodynamic variables (second day) were measured during treadmill run. A score-based Bayesian network machine-learning algorithm was used to predict ventilation values based on cutaneous hemodynamic measurements.

FINDINGS

Transcutaneous oxygen tension can be used to identify anaerobic threshold for both trained and untrained subjects during treadmill running, while electromyography can be used to identify anaerobic threshold only of trained subjects. Predicted values of ventilation, based on the transcutaneous oxygen tension, showed high correlation with actual values. Prediction accuracy was better among trained subjects, compared to the untrained ones.

INTERPRETATION

Transcutaneous oxygen tension could be used for prediction of maximal oxygen consumption during intense exercise and thus may provide improved assessment of premature fatigue during exercise.

Training-Induced Changes in Mitochondrial Content and Respiratory Function in Human Skeletal Muscle

A sedentary lifestyle has been linked to a number of metabolic disorders that have been associated with sub-optimal mitochondrial characteristics and an increased risk of premature death. Endurance training can induce an increase in mitochondrial content and/or mitochondrial functional qualities, which are associated with improved health and well-being and longer life expectancy. It is therefore important to better define how manipulating key parameters of an endurance training intervention can influence the content and functionality of the mitochondrial pool. This review focuses on mitochondrial changes taking place following a series of exercise sessions (training-induced mitochondrial adaptations), providing an in-depth analysis of the effects of exercise intensity and training volume on changes in mitochondrial protein synthesis, mitochondrial content and mitochondrial respiratory function. We provide evidence that manipulation of different exercise training variables promotes specific and diverse mitochondrial adaptations. Specifically, we report that training volume may be a critical factor affecting changes in mitochondrial content, whereas relative exercise intensity is an important determinant of changes in mitochondrial respiratory function. As a consequence, a dissociation between training-induced changes in mitochondrial content and mitochondrial respiratory function is often observed. We also provide evidence that exercise-induced changes are not necessarily predictive of training-induced adaptations, we propose possible explanations for the above discrepancies and suggestions for future research.

A new model of short acceleration-based training improves exercise performance in old mice

In order to identify a more appealing exercise strategy for the elderly, we studied a mouse model to determine whether a less time-consuming training program would improve exercise performance, enzyme activities, mitochondrial respiration, and metabolomic parameters. We compared the effects of short-session (acceleration-based) training with those of long-session endurance training in 23-month-old mice. The short-session training consisted of five acceleration-based treadmill running sessions over 2 weeks (the acceleration group), whereas the endurance training consisted of five-one-hour treadmill sessions per week for 4 weeks (the endurance group). A control group of mice was also studied. In the acceleration group, the post-training maximum running speed and time to exhaustion were significantly improved, relative to pretraining values (+8% for speed, P<.05; +10% for time to exhaustion, P<.01). The post-training maximum running speed was higher in the acceleration group than in the endurance group (by 23%; P<.001) and in the control group (by 15%; P<.05). In skeletal muscle samples, the enzymatic activities of citrate synthase, lactate dehydrogenase, and creatine kinase were significantly higher in the acceleration group than in the endurance group. Furthermore, mitochondrial respiratory activity in the gastrocnemius was higher in the acceleration group than in the control group. A metabolomic urine analysis revealed a higher mean taurine concentration and a lower mean branched amino acid concentration in the acceleration group. In old mice, acceleration-based training appears to be an efficient way of increasing performance by improving both aerobic and anaerobic metabolism, and possibly by enhancing antioxidant defenses and maintaining muscle protein balance.

Influence of Low Peak Respiratory Exchange Ratio on Cardiac Rehabilitation in Patients With Coronary Artery Disease

OBJECTIVE

To compare and analyze the effects of cardiac rehabilitation (CR) in two groups based on the peak respiratory exchange ratio (RERpeak) 1.1 values using the exercise tolerance test (ETT) results, and to investigate the reasons for early termination of ETT.

METHODS

Patients with acute coronary syndrome who participated in CR exercise training were selected and all subjects underwent 6 weeks of CR exercise training. ETT was performed on a treadmill using a Modified Bruce Protocol before and after CR exercise training. According to the result of the first ETT, the subjects were divided into two groups: those with an RERpeak≥1.1 (n=33) and those with an RERpeak<1.1 (n=22). We investigated the reasons for ETT termination and compared the effect of CR between the groups.

RESULTS

The reasons for the early termination of the first ETT in the RERpeak<1.1 group were subjective dyspnea, abnormal cardiovascular responses, leg fatigue and other problems. After a 6-week CR, the peak oxygen consumption (VO2peak) and ETT time increased, and the rate of perceived exertion (RPE) and RPP (rate pressure product) at stage 3 decreased in both the RERpeak<1.1 and RERpeak≥1.1 groups.

CONCLUSION

CR exercise training improved exercise capacity, not only in the RERpeak≥1.1 group, but also in the RERpeak<1.1 group. This means that patients with a lower exercise tolerance could also benefit from the effects of CR. Thoughtful consideration to identify the direct and indirect causes for the early termination of ETT would be necessary to improve the efficiency of CR.

The Respiratory Exchange Ratio is Associated with Fitness Indicators Both in Trained and Untrained Men: A Possible Application for People with Reduced Exercise Tolerance

Background:

The respiratory exchange ratio (RER) indirectly shows the muscle’s oxidative capacity to get energy. Sedentarism, exercise and physically active lifestyles modify it. For that reason, this study evaluates the associations between RER during sub-maximum exercise and other well established fitness indicators (body fat, maximum heart rate, maximum O₂ uptake, workload, and lactate threshold), in physically active trained and untrained men.

Methods:

The RER, O₂ uptake and blood lactate were measured in eight endurance trained and eight untrained men (age, 22.9 ± 4.5 vs. 21.9 ± 2.8 years; body mass, 67.1 ± 5.4 vs. 72.2 ± 7.7 kg; body fat, 10.6 ± 2.4% vs. 16.6 ± 3.8% and maximum O₂ uptake, 68.9 ± 6.3 vs. 51.6 ± 5.8 ml•kg⁻¹•min⁻¹), during maximum exercise test and during three different sub-maximum exercises at fixed workload: below, within or above the lactate threshold.

Results:

Endurance trained men presented higher O₂ uptake, lower blood lactate concentrations and lower RER values than those in untrained men at the three similar relative workloads. Even though with these differences in RER, a strong association (p < 0.05) of RER during sub-maximum exercise with the other well established fitness indicators was observed, and both maximum O₂ uptake and lactate threshold determined more than 57% of its variance (p < 0.05).

Conclusions:

These data demonstrate that RER measurement under sub-maximum exercise conditions was well correlated with other established physical fitness indicators, despite training condition. Furthermore, the results suggest that RER could help obtain an easy approach of fitness status under low exercise intensity and could be utilized in subjects with reduced exercise tolerance.

Do skeletal muscle phenotypic characteristics of Xhosa and Caucasian endurance runners differ when matched for training and racing distances?

Although East African black athletes dominate endurance running events, it is unknown whether black and white endurance runners with similar racing ability, matched for training, may differ in their skeletal muscle biochemical phenotype. Thirteen Xhosa (XR) and 13 Caucasian (CR) endurance runners were recruited and matched for 10-km performance, average preferred racing distance (PRDA), and training volume. Submaximal and maximal exercise tests were done, and vastus lateralis muscle biopsies were taken. XR were significantly lighter and shorter than CR athletes but had similar maximum oxygen consumption corrected for body weight and peak treadmill speed (PTS). XR had lower plasma lactate concentrations at 80% PTS ( P < 0.05) compared with CR. Also, XR had more type IIA (42.4 ± 9.2 vs. 31.3 ± 11.5%, P < 0.05) and less type I fibers (47.8 ± 10.9 vs. 63.1 ± 13.2%, P < 0.05), although oxidative enzyme activities did not differ. Furthermore, XR compared with CR had higher lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity in homogenate muscle samples (383 ± 99 vs. 229 ± 85 μmol·min−1·g dry weight−1, P < 0.05) and in both type IIa ( P < 0.05) and type I ( P = 0.05) single-fiber pools. A marked difference ( P < 0.05) in the composition of LDH isoform content was found between the two groups with XR having higher levels of LDH5-4 isoforms (skeletal muscle isozymes; LDH-M) than CR, which was not accounted for by fiber-type differences alone. These results confirm differences in muscle phenotype and physiological characteristics, particularly associated with high-intensity running.
