Estimation of the exercise ventilatory compensation point by the analysis of the relationship between minute ventilation and heart rate

Estimation of minute ventilation by heart rate for field exercise studies

The aim of this study was to develop predictive equations for minute ventilation based on heart rate, and to test the precision of the equations in two forms of endurance exercise. Eighteen men (age 27.8 ± 5.4 years old, maximal oxygen uptake 45.4 ± 8.3 ml·kg⁻¹·min⁻¹) performed a maximal progressive cycle test in which minute ventilation and heart rate were continually measured and further used to establish the proposed equations with quadratic and exponential adjustments. In the second and third laboratory visits, sixteen participants completed two cycling bouts, one high-intensity interval exercise and one low-intensity continuous exercise. The minute ventilation and heart rate were measured in both exercises and the validity of the equations tested. The Bland-Altman analysis showed agreement between the minute ventilation and estimated equations for interval and continuous exercise. There was no difference between the minute ventilation obtained from both equations and the minute ventilation directly measured during the interval exercise. However, the quadratic equation underestimated the minute ventilation during continuous exercise (p < 0.05). While both equations seem to be suitable to estimate minute ventilation during high-intensity interval exercise, the exponential equation is recommended for low-intensity continuous exercise.

Description and predictive value of a novel method for determining the respiratory compensation point using standard scores

The ability to use data from tests of maximum aerobic capacity to estimate the ventilatory threshold and point of respiratory compensation (RCP) is useful for coaches and practitioners in the development of training schemes. Current methods for determining the RCP generally involve identifying deflections in respiratory variables when examined alongside minute ventilation. This investigation describes a novel mathematical method for determining RCP using standard scores (Z-scores) for minute ventilation (VE) and oxygen consumption (VO2). This method allows for the point where ventilation becomes disproportionate to oxygen consumption to be quantified as an intersection between 2 lines of best fit. This novel Z-score method was compared with a well-described determination of RCP and was found to be highly correlated (r = 0.926, p ≤ 0.001). The Z-score method was also found to be related to 10-km road race performance using regression analysis (R(2) = 0.824, p ≤ 0.001) in a group of 18 athletes and recreational runners. Based on the evidence from this study, the Z-score method of RCP determination is highly correlated to previous methods and endurance performance. This method potentially offers further benefits as it is not reliant on visual determination of changes in slope in variables of interest but rather on the mathematical solution to the intersection of 2 regression lines.

Upper limb aerobic training improves aerobic fitness and all-out performance of America's Cup grinders

This research on "America's Cup" grinders investigated the effects of a specific eight-week long-arm cranking ergometer (ACE) training on upper body (UB) aerobic fitness (ventilatory threshold - Tvent, respiratory compensation point- RCP, -oxygen uptake peak - VO₂peak) and high intensity working capacity. The training consisted of sessions carried out for 20-30 mins, three times per week, at an intensity between the UB-Tvent and UB-RCP, and replaced part of a typical lower limb aerobic training whilst maintaining the usual weekly schedule of callisthenics, resistance training and sailing. Seven sailors, including four grinders and three mastmen (age 30 ± 5.5 years, height 1.9 ± 0.04 m, body mass 102 ± 3.6 kg), were evaluated through both an ACE cardiopulmonary maximal exercise test (CPET) and an ACE all-out up to exhaustion exercise test, before and after the ACE training. UB aerobic fitness improved significantly: UB-VO₂peak increased from 4.29 ± 0.442 to 4.52 ± 0.522 l·min(-1) (6.4 ± 3.66%), VO₂ at UB-Tvent from 2.42 ± 0.282 to 2.97 ± 0.328 l·min(-1) (22.8 ± 5.09%) and VO₂ at UB-RCP from 3.25 ± 0.402 to 3.75 ± 0.352 l·min(-1) (16.1 ± 10.83%). Peak power at the ACE CPET increased from 351 ± 27.5 to 387 ± 33.5 W (10.5 ± 6.93%). The all-out test total mechanical work increased from 28.9 ± 2.35 to 40.1 ± 3.76 kJ (72.1 ± 4.67%). In conclusion, a high intensity aerobic ACE training can be effective in improving grinding performance by increasing UB aerobic fitness and all-out working capacity.

Minute ventilation and heart rate relationship for estimation of the ventilatory compensation point at high altitude: a pilot study

BACKGROUND

The ventilatory compensation point (VCP) is an exercise threshold which has been used in the design of training programs in sports medicine and rehabilitation. We recently demonstrated that changes in the slope of the minute ventilation to heart rate relationship (ΔV˙E/ΔHR) can be utilized for estimation of the VCP during incremental exercise at sea level (SL). We hypothesized that in hypoxic conditions, such as high altitude (HA), VCP can be also reliably estimated by ΔV˙E/ΔHR.

METHODS

At SL and on immediate ascent to HA (5,050 m), six healthy subjects (42 ± 14 SD years) performed a maximal incremental exercise test on a cycle ergometer; O2 uptake (V˙O2), CO2 output (V˙CO2), V˙E, and HR were measured breath-by-breath. The ΔV˙E/ΔHR method for VCP estimation was compared to the standard method using the ventilatory equivalent for CO2 (V˙E/V˙CO2) and end-tidal PCO2 (PETCO2). The ΔV˙E/ΔHR slope values below (S1) and above (S2) VCP were computed by linear regression analysis.

RESULTS

A significant difference between S1 and S2 was observed, at SL and HA, for both the ΔV˙E/ΔHR and V˙E/V˙CO2 methods for VCP estimation. A good agreement between the two methods (ΔV˙E/ΔHR vs. V˙E/V˙CO2) was found for both environmental conditions; the mean difference ± 2 SD of V˙O2 at VCP (VCP-V˙O2) was -22 ± 112 ml/min at SL and 39 ± 81 ml/min at HA. The VCP-V˙O2 was significantly lower at HA compared to SL; in addition, S1 and S2 mean values were significantly higher at HA compared to SL.

CONCLUSION

At HA, VCP may be reliably estimated by the ΔV˙E/ΔHR method.

Minute ventilation of cyclists, car and bus passengers: an experimental study

BACKGROUND

Differences in minute ventilation between cyclists, pedestrians and other commuters influence inhaled doses of air pollution. This study estimates minute ventilation of cyclists, car and bus passengers, as part of a study on health effects of commuters' exposure to air pollutants.

METHODS

Thirty-four participants performed a submaximal test on a bicycle ergometer, during which heart rate and minute ventilation were measured simultaneously at increasing cycling intensity. Individual regression equations were calculated between heart rate and the natural log of minute ventilation. Heart rates were recorded during 280 two hour trips by bicycle, bus and car and were calculated into minute ventilation levels using the individual regression coefficients.

RESULTS

Minute ventilation during bicycle rides were on average 2.1 times higher than in the car (individual range from 1.3 to 5.3) and 2.0 times higher than in the bus (individual range from 1.3 to 5.1). The ratio of minute ventilation of cycling compared to travelling by bus or car was higher in women than in men. Substantial differences in regression equations were found between individuals. The use of individual regression equations instead of average regression equations resulted in substantially better predictions of individual minute ventilations.

CONCLUSION

The comparability of the gender-specific overall regression equations linking heart rate and minute ventilation with one previous American study, supports that for studies on the group level overall equations can be used. For estimating individual doses, the use of individual regression coefficients provides more precise data. Minute ventilation levels of cyclists are on average two times higher than of bus and car passengers, consistent with the ratio found in one small previous study of young adults. The study illustrates the importance of inclusion of minute ventilation data in comparing air pollution doses between different modes of transport.
