Chitosan coated selenium: A versatile nano-delivery system for molecular cargoes

The use of nanoscale delivery platforms holds tremendous potential to overcome the current limitations associated with the conventional delivery of genetic materials and hydrophobic compounds. Therefore, there is an imperative need to develop a suitable alternative nano-enabled delivery platform to overcome these limitations. This work reports the first one-step hydrothermal synthesis of chitosan functionalized selenium nanoparticles (Selenium-chitosan, SeNP) that are capable of serving as a versatile nanodelivery platform for different types of active ingredients. The chitosan functionalization modified the surface charge to allow the loading of active ingredients and improve biocompatibility. The effective loading of the SeNP was demonstrated using genetic material, a hydrophobic small molecule, and an antibiotic. Furthermore, the loading of active ingredients showed no detrimental effect on the specific properties (fluorescence and bactericidal) of the studied active ingredients. In vitro antimicrobial inhibitory studies exhibited good compatibility between the SeNP delivery platform and Penicillin G (Pen), resulting in a reduction of the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) from 32 to 16 ppm. Confocal microscopy images showed the uptake of the SeNP by a macrophage cell line (J774A.1), demonstrating trackability and intracellular delivery of an active ingredient. In summary, the present work demonstrates the potential of SeNP as a suitable delivery platform for biomedical and agricultural applications.

Room temperature 3D carbon microprinting

Manufacturing custom three-dimensional (3D) carbon functional materials is of utmost importance for applications ranging from electronics and energy devices to medicine, and beyond. In lieu of viable eco-friendly synthesis pathways, conventional methods of carbon growth involve energy-intensive processes with inherent limitations of substrate compatibility. The yearning to produce complex structures, with ultra-high aspect ratios, further impedes the quest for eco-friendly and scalable paths toward 3D carbon-based materials patterning. Here, we demonstrate a facile process for carbon 3D printing at room temperature, using low-power visible light and a metal-free catalyst. Within seconds to minutes, this one-step photocatalytic growth yields rod-shaped microstructures with aspect ratios up to ~500 and diameters below 10 μm. The approach enables the rapid patterning of centimeter-size arrays of rods with tunable height and pitch, and of custom complex 3D structures. The patterned structures exhibit appealing luminescence properties and ohmic behavior, with great potential for optoelectronics and sensing applications, including those interfacing with biological systems.

Tunable Emissive Ir(III) Benzimidazole-quinoline Hybrids as Promising Theranostic Lead Compounds

Bioactive and luminescent cyclometallated Ir(III) complexes [Ir(ppy)₂ L1]Cl (1) and [Ir(ppy)₂ L2]Cl (2) containing a benzimidazole derivative (L1/L2) as auxiliary mimic of a nucleotide have been synthesised. The emissive properties of both complexes are conditioned by the nature of L1 and L2, rendering an orange and a green emitter respectively. Both are highly emissive with quantum yield increasing in absence of oxygen up to 0.26 (1) and 0.36 (2), suggesting their phosphorescent character. Antiproliferative activity against lung cancer A549 cells increased up to 15 times upon irradiation conditions, reaching IC₅₀ values in the nanomolar range (0.3±0.09 μM (1) and 0.26±0.14 μM (2)) and pointing them as good PSs candidates for photodynamic therapy via ¹ O₂ generation. Cellular biodistribution analysis by fluorescence microscopy suggest the lysosomes as the preferential accumulation organelle. Time-resolved studies showed a greatly increased cellular emission lifetime compared to the solution values, indicating binding to macromolecules or cellular structures and restriction of collision and vibrational quenching.
