Objective: Our study examines nuclear factor kappa B (NF-қB) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) polymorphisms in the most common gynecological cancer type, endometrial cancer, and the relationship between disease parameters and these polymorphisms. Methods: In our patient group; while 109 endometrial cancer patients were examined and treated in the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, Istanbul Medical Faculty, and 106 healthy women without the disease were included in the control group. DNA of blood samples taken from all groups were isolated; COX-2 765C> G and COX-2 1195A> G polymorphisms were studied with NF-қB-94 ins / delATTG. Genotypes analyzed using the PCR-based restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLP) method were investigated in terms of the relationship between endometrial cancer susceptibility and endometrial cancer disease parameters. CYLD expression in endometrial carcinoma and correlation with clinicohistopathological parameters

OBJECTIVE

Endometrial cancer is a threat to women health worldwide. Cylindromatosis (CYLD) enzyme is a tumour suppressor, considered an effective prognostic marker in various malignancies, but its role in endometrial carcinoma is not fully elucidated. Here, we sought to estimate the prognostic value of CYLD expression in endometrial carcinoma.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

CYLD levels were immunohistochemically evaluated in 65 patients with endometrial carcinoma and inferential statistics were applied.

RESULTS

Low or negative CYLD expression significantly correlates with older ages, non-endometrioid and invasive carcinomas, tumours with moderate or poor differentiation and advanced stages. Moreover, non-endometrioid and invasive carcinomas are independent risk factors for weaker CYLD expression. Kaplan-Meier analysis illustrated that negative or low CYLD expression is statistically significantly associated with increased death risk, compared to moderate or high expression.

CONCLUSION

This study demonstrates for the first time a clear correlation between CYLD expression and clinicohistopathological parameters of endometrial carcinoma patients, suggesting its use as a potential prognostic/predictive marker for Endometrial Carcinoma.

Expression of anti-apoptotic protein survivin in human endometrial carcinoma: Clinical and pathological associations as a separate factor and in combination with concomitant PTEN and p53 expression

Endometrial carcinoma is one of the most common types of gynecological cancer. A total of 99 cases of primary endometrial carcinoma were investigated for survivin expression by immunohistochemistry. Furthermore, the association between concomitant survivin, PTEN and p53 expression, and clinicopathological parameters was examined. Immunopositivity for survivin was identified in 88% of cases. Concomitant survivin, PTEN and p53 expression (staining scores and intensity) was observed in 60% of endometrial adenocarcinomas. A significant association was identified between the sum of staining intensity and scores of survivin immunopositive cells, and patient age (P=0.028), histological grade (P<0.001), clinical stage (P=0.018) and fallopian tube and/or ovarian invasion (P=0.039). A negative tendency for correlation was observed between surivin and PTEN immunostaining scores (P=0.062; ρ=−0.238). Specimens with high scores of survivin expression tended to show decreased scores of PTEN immunostaining, and vice versa. However, in circumstances with an increased co-expression of survivin and PTEN, a statistically significant association with histological types was observed (P=0.020). A statistically significant positive correlation was identified between survivin and p53 sum co-expression (P=0.008; ρ=0.300). Furthermore, a significant association was identified between survivin and p53 concomitant sum expression and age of patients (P=0.001), histological type (P=0.020), clinical stage (P=0.037), histological differentiation (P=0.001) and presence of fallopian tube and/or ovarian invasion (P=0.026). The present findings suggested that survivin may be an indicator of unfavorable outcome in older patients with endometrial carcinoma, in specific circumstances that are dependent on different concomitant genetic alterations and different combinations of molecular signaling pathways. Increased expression levels of survivin and PTEN may serve a role in the development of more aggressive endometrial carcinoma during their interaction. In addition, protein expression levels of survivin and p53 are positively correlated and may share a common molecular pathway to promote endometrial carcinogenesis. These findings provided evidence that survivin and p53 combined may be useful markers for the prediction of tumor behavior and prognosis.

Apigenin Exerts Anti-inflammatory Effects in an Experimental Model of Acute Pancreatitis by Down-regulating TNF-α

BACKGROUND/AIM

This study investigated the anti-inflammatory effect of apigenin in an experimental model of acute pancreatitis. Inflammatory response was reflected by tissue expression of the cytokine TNF-α coupled with histological examination.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Wistar rats were divided into three groups: Sham-group animals underwent laparotomy only, without any other interventions. Control-group animals underwent laparotomy and bilio-pancreatic duct ligation to induce pancreatitis without apigenin administration. Apigenin group animals were further treated with apigenin. Euthanasia was performed at 6, 12, 24, 48 and 72 h post-operatively.

RESULTS

Over-expression of TNF-α in relation to postoperative time was observed in the control group (p<0.001). In the apigenin group, under-expression of TNF-α in relation to postoperative time was observed (p<0.013). At 72 h, apigenin reduced pancreatic TNF-α expression and prevented pancreatic necrosis.

CONCLUSION

Apigenin slows progression and reduces severity of acute pancreatitis. Apigenin may serve as an adjunct to a more successful therapeutic strategy in acute pancreatitis.

Inhibitors of apoptosis: clinical implications in cancer

Inhibitor of apoptosis (IAP) family comprises a group of endogenous proteins that function as main regulators of caspase activity and cell death. They are considered the main culprits in evasion of apoptosis, which is a fundamental hallmark of carcinogenesis. Overexpression of IAP proteins has been documented in various solid and hematological malignancies, rendering them resistant to standard chemotherapeutics and radiation therapy and conferring poor prognosis. This observation has urged their exploitation as therapeutic targets in cancer with promising pre-clinical outcomes. This review describes the structural and functional features of IAP proteins to elucidate the mechanism of their anti-apoptotic activity. We also provide an update on patterns of IAP expression in different tumors, their impact on treatment response and prognosis, as well as the emerging investigational drugs targeting them. This aims at shedding the light on the advances in IAP targeting achieved to date, and encourage further development of clinically applicable therapeutic approaches.

The Effect of Cyclooxygenase-2 Expression in Uterine Carcinosarcoma on Survival: A Reassessment Based on Mature Data

OBJECTIVE

To reassess the effect cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) expression in carcinosarcoma on survival based on mature 5-year survival data.

METHOD

A comparison of 5-year survival of 27 patients with carcinosarcoma according to the presence of COX-2 immunohistochemical staining and staining score was performed.

RESULTS

The 5-year survival of those with positive and negative COX-2 staining was statistically not different. However, there was a clear trend for more favorable 5-year survival in patients with a high staining score than in those with a low score, and the difference was of borderline significance (38.5% vs 7.1%; P = 0.06).

CONCLUSION

In view of the role of COX-2 in carcinogenesis, our finding that COX-2 expression may confer a better survival in patients with carcinosarcoma is intriguing. Larger studies are indicated to elucidate the effect of COX-2 expression on survival in patients with carcinosarcoma because this may have therapeutic implications.

Significance of survivin as a prognostic factor and a therapeutic target in endometrial cancer

INTRODUCTION

Survivin is an anti-apoptotic protein encoded by the baculoviral inhibitor of apoptosis repeat-containing (BIRC5) gene and is upregulated in 83% of endometrial cancers. We aimed to elucidate the prognostic importance of BIRC5 expression, and evaluate survivin as a therapeutic target for endometrial cancer, by knock-down of BIRC5 and using the survivin inhibitor-YM155.

METHODS

RNA sequencing data in 234 patients with endometrial carcinoma was obtained from The Cancer Genome Atlas database, and analyzed using Kaplan-Meier method, log-rank test and Cox proportional hazard model. Expressions of survivin in 16 endometrial cancer cell lines were analyzed by western blotting. Knocking down effect on survivin expression was evaluated using a small interfering RNA (siRNA). The anti-proliferative and pro-apoptotic effects of YM155 were assessed with cell viability, flow cytometry, and annexin V/propidium iodide assays.

RESULTS

High expression of BIRC5 was associated with poor progression free survival (P=0.006), and shown to be an independent prognostic factor (HR=1.97, 95% CI=1.29-4.5, P=0.045). Survivin was upregulated in 14 of 16 (87.5%) endometrial cancer cell lines, compared with endometrial immortalized cells. Apoptosis was induced by knockdown of BIRC5 in all 3 cell lines examined. YM155 showed increased population of sub-G1 cells (P<0.001) in all 16 cell lines, and IC50 values to YM155 were <50nm in 15 cell lines. YM155 dose-dependently and significantly increased the apoptotic cell population in all 16 cell lines (P<0.001).

CONCLUSIONS

Present study indicated that survivin expression is a significant prognostic factor and that survivin is a promising therapeutic target for endometrial cancer.

Corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) system localization in human fetal heart

OBJECTIVE

The corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) family consists of the neuropeptides CRF, Ucn I, II and III and the binding sites CRFR1, CRFR2 and CRF-BP. It regulates stress response and the homeostasis of an organism. In this study, we examined the presence of the CRF system in the human hearts of normal and pathological fetuses.

DESIGN

Heart tissues from 40 archival human fetuses were divided into Group A (without pathology, 'normal'), Group B (with chromosomal abnormalities) and Group C (with congenital disorders). Immunohistochemistry was used to localize the CRF system. Results correlated to gestational trimester and pathology.

RESULTS

Immunoreactivity for all antigens was found in cardiac myocytes of all groups, in almost all samples, except Ucn III which was present in almost half of the fetuses of Groups B and C and was not detected at all in Group A. Ucn III was more often present during the earlier stage of development (<21 weeks) and in fetuses with congenital disorders. In a fetus diagnosed with heart pathology, all but Ucn III antigens were also present.

CONCLUSIONS

We localized a complete CRF system in the human fetal heart and correlated the presence of Ucn III to development and pathology. More studies are needed to verify and clarify the exact role of the CRF system in the human fetal heart.

Co-expression of galectin-3 and CRIP-1 in endometrial cancer: prognostic value and patient survival

Endometrial cancer is the sixth most common cancer in women. Galectin-3 (GAL-3) and CRIP-1 are multifunctional proteins which seem to be involved in many neoplasias. This study aims to point out correlations between clinicopathological findings and endometrial cancer patient survival to GAL-3 and CRIP-1 expression in order to enfold their diagnostic/prognostic potential. Tissues from 46 patients diagnosed with endometrial cancer were studied by immunohistochemistry, using monoclonal antibodies for GAL-3 and CRIP-1, and expression levels were correlated with clinicopathological findings and survival. Analysis was performed at single protein level or as co-expression. High expression of GAL-3 and CRIP-1 was independently associated with tumor depth and histological grade, respectively. Also, there was a significant correlation between high co-expression of the two proteins and the histological grade (aOR 2.66), the tumor depth (aOR 0.32) and the histological type (aOR 1.32), but not with the patients' age. Moreover, high expression of both proteins was observed in patients with shorter survival times. Interestingly, the co-expression of the two proteins exhibited some degree of monotony (Spearman's ρ = 0.768), indicating a common molecular pathway. This study provides evidence for a prognostic clinical potential of the combined study of GAL-3 and CRIP-1 in endometrial cancer. These factors are poorly studied in endometrium, and their role in the carcinogenetic process and on effective therapy awaits further elucidation.

A complete corticotropin releasing factor system localized in human fetal lung

OBJECTIVE

The Corticotropin Releasing Factor (CRF) system (neuropeptides CRF, Ucn I, II, III and binding sites CRFR1, CRFR2, CRF-BP) is responsible for stress regulation and the homeostasis of an organism. Herein we study the CRF system in human normal and pathological fetal lungs.

DESIGN

Lung tissues from 46 archival human fetuses were divided into Group A (normal), Group B (chromosomal abnormalities) and Group C (congenital disorders). Presence of elements of the CRF system was evaluated using immunohistochemistry and was correlated to pathology, lung developmental stage and clinicopathological characteristics.

RESULTS

Immunoreactivity for all antigens was found in both epithelial and mesenchymal lung cells of the bronchi and alveoli. Ucn I and CRFR1 were more frequently present in Group A. Ucns were more frequently localized at the pseudoglandular stage. There was a positive correlation between the presence of the CRF neuropeptides and between CRFR1 and CRF. Two fetuses with lung malformations showed low or no detectable presence of the CRF system.

CONCLUSIONS

We report the presence of a complete CRF system in human fetal lungs correlating its developmental stage and several pathologies. Our results are in agreement with findings in experimental animal models, implicating the CRF system in fetal lung development, its action being more significant in the early stages.

B7H4, HSP27 and DJ-1 molecular markers as prognostic factors in pancreatic cancer

OBJECTIVES

Pancreatic cancer (PC) is one of the most lethal tumors of the gastrointestinal tract. The ability to predict which patients would benefit most from surgical intervention and chemotherapy would be a great clinical tool. A large number of potential markers have been identified lately in pancreatic cancer and their clinical utilities as prognostic tools are under investigation.

METHODS

We recruited 41 patients who had undergone radical surgical resection for PC between 2003 and 2010. To investigate the prognostic factors, we evaluated 3 possible markers: B7H4, HSP27 and DJ-1 protein expressions in the tissue specimens of these 41 patients by immunohistochemistry and analyzed the clinical and pathological features of these specimens.

RESULTS

The expression of the three antigens was independently associated with a negative impact of chemotherapy with gemcitabine on patient's survival. Moreover, patients who overexpressed B7H4 had worse prognosis than the ones who did not.

CONCLUSIONS

B7H4, DJ-1 and HSP27 may be used in the future as prognostic markers that express resistance of pancreatic cancer patients to chemotherapy with gemcitabine.

pHH3 and survivin are co-expressed in high-risk endometrial cancer and are prognostic relevant

BACKGROUND

Phosphohistone-H3 (pHH3) is a promising reliable mitotic count biomarker. Our purpose was to study the relationship between the novel proliferation marker pHH3 and the established anti-apoptotic marker survivin and consider their prognostic relevance in endometrial cancer.

METHODS

A total of 106 patients with endometrial cancer (type I/endometrioid, n=81; type II carcinomas, n=18) and simple hyperplasia without atypia (n=7) were investigated. pHH3 and survivin expression were assessed using immunohistochemistry from paraffin-embedded tissue blocks.

RESULTS

A strong positive correlation was observed between pHH3 and survivin expression (P<0.0001). Patients with high-grade tumours and patients with type II carcinomas expressed significantly more pHH3 and survivin than low grade and endometrioid tumours (P<0.0001, P<0.0001, P<0.0001, and P<0.0001, respectively). In univariate survival analysis, overexpression of pHH3 and survivin were associated with increased recurrence and mortality (P<0.0001, P<0.0001, P<0.0001, and P<0.0001, respectively), in the multivariable Cox regression analyses both pHH3 and survivin could be identified as independent parameters for overall survival (P=0.004, and P=0.023, respectively).

CONCLUSION

In endometrial cancer, pHH3 and survivin were strongly positive correlated and were both associated with type II and high-grade tumours. Increasing expression levels of pHH3 and survivin were associated with adverse prognostic factors.

Survivin regulates the expression of VEGF-C in lymphatic metastasis of breast cancer

Background

As a known regulator of apoptosis, survivin has positive relationship with lymphatic metastasis in breast cancer. This study aims to detect the difference in expression between survivin and vascular endothelial growth factor-C (VEGF-C) in treated breast cancer cells and tissues, and to analyze the correlation among survivin, VEGF-C and lymphatic metastasis.

Methods

Plasmid with survivin and VEGF-C shRNA and lentivirus with survivin gene were constructed and transfected into breast cancer cell ZR-75-30. Then the expressions of the two genes were examined using western blot analysis and real-time PCR. The change of invasiveness of breast cancer cells was assessed using matrigel invasion assay. Using immunohistochemistry, the expression of survivin and VEGF-C were analyzed in 108 clinical breast cancer cases with breast cancer tissue and lymph node.

Results

Survivin regulated the expression of VEGF-C at both protein and mRNA levels in breast cancer cells. Immunohistochemical analysis showed that the level of VEGF-C expression was significantly related with that of survivin in breast cancer tissues (p<0.05). VEGF-C was found to participate in the process of breast cancer cells invasion mediated by survivin. The co-expression of the two and the single expression of any one took significant difference in positive lymph node (p<0.05).

Conclusions

Survivin takes an important part in regulating the expression of VEGF-C. VEGF-C could influence the invasive ability mediated by survivin. The co-expression of survivin and VEGF-C is more statistically significant to assess lymphatic metastasis in breast cancer.

Expression of matrix metalloproteinase-2 and survivin in endometrioid and nonendometrioid endometrial cancers and clinicopathologic significance

Objective

To determine matrix metalloproteinase-2 and survivin expressions in endometrial cancers, their relation to clinical and histologic parameters and to investigate any difference in the expression of these markers between endometrioid and nonendometrioid cancers.

Methods

Ninety-five patients with endometrial cancer, were included. Matrix metalloproteinase-2 and survivin expressions were analyzed immunohistochemically from paraffin-embedded tissues by using specific monoclonal antibodies.

Results

Survivin nuclear expression was higher in endometrioid cancer as compared to nonendometrioid cancer (p=0.040), but there was no difference for cytoplasmic survivin and matrix metalloproteinase-2 expressions between type I and type II carcinomas. Survivin cytoplasmic staining was significantly lower in patients with deep myometrial invasion (p=0.038). Nuclear expression of survivin is decreased in histologic grade 3 tumors compared to grade 1 and 2 tumors (p=0.013), but there is no difference between grade 1 and 2. We did not find any statistically significant difference between survivin or matrix metalloproteinase-2 expressions and survival.

Conclusion

Survivin and matrix metalloproteinase-2 are present in endometrioid and nonendometrioid cancers. Grade 1 and 2 tumors and carcinomas having myometrial invasion less than 50% have higher survivin expression. These results supports that, survivin may play an important role in early stage tumors and early phases of tumor development. We did not find any association between matrix metalloproteinase-2 expression and classical prognostic factors in endometrial cancer and both proteins were not associated with survival.

Molecular biomarkers in endometrial hyperplasias predict cancer progression

OBJECTIVE

The purpose of this study was to assess the value of the 2003 World Health Organization (WHO) and endometrial intraepithelial neoplasia (EIN) classifications, D-score, and molecular biomarkers in endometrial hyperplasia (EH) for cancer progression.

STUDY DESIGN

We conducted a review of 307 endometrial hyperplasias for WHO and EIN classifications and an analysis of biomarkers, D-score, and cancer progression-free survival.

RESULTS

The WHO, EIN, D-score, and many biomarkers were prognostic; 7.2% of the samples progressed to cancer. The WHO and EIN classifications correlated weakly with CK5/6 and p16. The D-score was strongest prognostically. When >1, it had the lowest false-negative progression rate of all features analyzed. COX2 negativity was the only other independent multivariate cancer progression predictor in endometrial hyperplasia, but only in cases with D-score <1. Eight of 13 cases (61%), with a combined D-score of <1 and negative COX2 progressed, which contrasted with 3 of 139 of all other cases (2.8%) (P < .0001; hazard ratio, 53.0). The biomarkers did not strengthen the prognostic value of the WHO or EIN classification.

CONCLUSION

Combined D-score <1 and COX2 negativity strongly predict cancer progression in endometrial hyperplasias.

The prostaglandin E2 receptor, EP2, regulates survivin expression via an EGFR/STAT3 pathway in UVB-exposed mouse skin

We previously reported that cycloogenase (COX)-2-generated prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) had anti-apoptotic effects in UVB-exposed mouse skin that involved EP2-mediated signaling (Chun et al., Cancer Res. 2007; 67: 2015). Because survivin is a regulator of cell survival, the possible involvement of COX-2 and EP2 in survivin expression following UVB exposure of mouse skin was investigated. In wild type mice, UVB exposure time-dependently increased the levels of survivin and phosphorylated-signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (p-STAT3), a transcription factor that regulates survivin expression; and COX-2- or EP2-deficiency significantly reduced their induction. Topical application of the COX-2 inhibitor, celecoxib, also reduced UVB-induced survivin levels. To further investigate the roles of PGE2 and EP2 in the regulation of survivin, indomethacin was used to inhibit UVB-induced endogenous PG production. UVB-induced survivin levels were reduced by indomethacin, and PGE2 and the EP2 agonist, butaprost, partially restored survivin levels. The epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) is a downstream effector of EP2 and EGFR inhibition (AG1478) significantly reduced UVB activation of STAT3 and survivin levels. UVB-induced epidermal apoptosis in COX-2-/- mice was reduced by butaprost and EGFR inhibition blocked butaprost’s protective effects. Furthermore, butaprost in the absence of UVB exposure time-dependently increased p-EGFR, p-STAT3, and survivin levels in naïve mouse skin, whereas the EP4 agonist, PGE1 alcohol, did not significantly increase p-STAT3 or survivin levels. These data suggest that COX-2-generated PGE2 regulates survivin expression in mouse skin, in part, via an EP2-mediated EGFR/STAT3 pathway. Therefore, targeting the EP2/survivin pathway may provide a strategy for the chemoprevention/chemotherapy of skin cancer.

LAPTM4B-35 overexpression is an independent prognostic marker in endometrial carcinoma

BACKGROUND

Lysosomal protein transmembrane 4 β-35 (LAPTM4B-35), a novel oncoprotein that belongs to the mammalian 4-tetratransmembrane spanning protein superfamily, has been implicated in oncogenesis and cancer progression in several solid malignances. However, the expression of LAPTM4B-35 and its role in endometrial cancer progression remain unknown.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

We investigated the expression of the LAPTM4B-35 protein by immunohistochemistry in 30 normal endometrium specimens and 165 endometrial carcinomas and analyzed its correlation with various clinicopathologic features, including patient outcome.

RESULTS

LAPTM4B-35 immunoreactivity was overexpressed in endometrial carcinoma cases compared with normal endometrium (P < 0.001). High LAPTM4B-35 expression was found in 117 (70.91%) of these 165 carcinomas and was positively correlated with the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics stage, histological grade, depth of myometrial invasion, lymph node metastasis, lymph vascular space involvement, and recurrence, but not with age and histological type. Patients with high LAPTM4B-35 expression had significantly poorer overall survival and disease-free survival compared with patients with low expression of LAPTM4B-35 (P = 0.001 and P = 0.002, respectively). Multivariate analysis showed that high LAPTM4B-35 expression was an independent prognostic factor for both overall survival and disease-free survival of patients with endometrial carcinoma (both P = 0.005).

CONCLUSIONS

These results showed that high LAPTM4B-35 expression was associated with progression and prognosis of endometrial carcinoma.

Cyclooxygenase-2 and Survivin in Superficial Urothelial Carcinoma of the Bladder and Correlation with Intratumoural Microvessel Density

This study was designed to investigate the protein levels of cyclooxyogenase-2 (COX-2) and survivin in superficial urothelial carcinoma (UC) and their correlation with microvessel density (MVD). High-grade UC was positive for both COX-2 and survivin protein, and the proportion of tumours positive for both proteins increased with increasing tumour grade. The presence of COX-2 protein was significantly correlated with the presence of survivin protein. Both COX-2 and survivin positivity were significantly correlated with MVD in all patients regardless of tumour grade, but there was no correlation between MVD and COX-2 and survivin positivity by individual tumour grade. Although there was no significant difference in the proportion of COX-2-positive tumours when patients were stratified by tumour stage, a significantly higher proportion of patients with pT1 stage tumours were survivin-positive compared with patients with pTa stage tumours. COX-2 and survivin positivity were significantly correlated in all patients regardless of tumour grade or stage. COX-2 and survivin were significantly correlated in patients with pTa, but there was no correlation in pT1 tumours. These findings demonstrate that together, COX-2, survivin and MVD may play an important role in UC.

MicroRNAs and their role in gynecological tumors

There have been only few events in the history of molecular biology that could be compared to the discovery of microRNAs and their role in cell physiology and pathology. MicroRNAs are small, single-stranded, noncoding RNAs composed of 19-25 nucleotides (∼22 nt), which have been proven to regulate gene expression at the posttranscriptional level. The regulatory function of microRNAs was demonstrated in normal and diseased conditions. In particular, it has been linked to cell cycle regulation, cell proliferation and differentiation, inflammatory response, and apoptosis. Altered expression profiles of microRNA have been observed in many pathologies, including diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and several cancers. To date, more than 700 human microRNAs have been identified and in silico-based analyses estimate at least 500 more to be identified. The purpose of this review is to present the current perspective on microRNAs structure and biogenesis as well as their contribution to the etiopathogenesis of gynecological tumors. We discuss results of the recent publications that indicate possibilities of microRNAs use as novel markers for tumors screening, early diagnosis, and treatment monitoring. The possible utilization of microRNAs as prognostic factors and specific therapy targets is also reviewed.
