Abstract
BACKGROUND The levels of soluble intracellular adhesion molecule-1 (sICAM-1) increased in cervical cancer patients and those patients with recurrence. However, the pattern of change in sICAM-1 and its association with prognosis in cervical cancer patients after radiotherapy remain unknown. MATERIALS AND METHODS sICAM-1 level was detected using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in different patient groups. The predictive value of sICAM-1 for cervical cancer occurrence was evaluated using receiver operating characteristics analysis. The association of sICAM-1 with clinical pathology was analyzed using Fisher's exact test. Association of sICAM-1 with prognosis was evaluated by alteration of sICAM-1 level in cervical cancer patients with or without complete remission at pre-radiotherapy, post-radiotherapy, and post-follow-up. The survival rate of cervical cancer patients with low or high sICAM-1 was plotted using the Kaplan-Meier curve. RESULTS sICAM-1 level significantly increased in cervical cancer patients and could predict the occurrence of cervical cancer. sICAM-1 was closely associated with tumor size, differentiation, and radiotherapy effect. Importantly, the level of sICAM-1 gradually decreased in patients with complete remission after radiotherapy, while it remained unchanged in those without complete remission. Furthermore, the cervical cancer patients with high expression of sICAM-1 had a shorter survival time. CONCLUSION The level of sICAM-1 could predict the occurrence of cervical cancer and is closely related to the prognosis of cervical cancer patients after radiotherapy.

Abstract
Interactions among leukocytes and leukocytes with immune-associated auxiliary cells represent an essential feature of the immune response that requires the involvement of cell adhesion molecules (CAMs). In the immune system, CAMs include a wide range of members pertaining to different structural and functional families involved in cell development, activation, differentiation and migration. Among them, β2 integrins (LFA-1, Mac-1, p150,95 and αDβ2) are predominantly involved in homotypic and heterotypic leukocyte adhesion. β2 integrins bind to intercellular (I)CAMs, actin cytoskeleton-linked receptors belonging to immunoglobulin superfamily (IgSF)-CAMs expressed by leukocytes and vascular endothelial cells, enabling leukocyte activation and transendothelial migration. β2 integrins have long been viewed as the most important ICAMs partners, propagating intracellular signalling from β2 integrin-ICAM adhesion receptor interaction. In this review, we present previous evidence from pioneering studies and more recent findings supporting an important role for ICAMs in signal transduction. We also discuss the contribution of immune ICAMs (ICAM-1, -2, and -3) to reciprocal cell signalling and function in processes in which β2 integrins supposedly take the lead, paying particular attention to T cell activation, differentiation and migration.

Abstract
Intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1) is a transmembrane protein in the immunoglobulin superfamily expressed on the surface of multiple cell populations and upregulated by inflammatory stimuli. It mediates cellular adhesive interactions by binding to the β2 integrins macrophage antigen 1 and leukocyte function-associated antigen 1, as well as other ligands. It has important roles in the immune system, including in leukocyte adhesion to the endothelium and transendothelial migration, and at the immunological synapse formed between lymphocytes and antigen-presenting cells. ICAM-1 has also been implicated in the pathophysiology of diverse diseases from cardiovascular diseases to autoimmune disorders, certain infections, and cancer. In this review, we summarize the current understanding of the structure and regulation of the ICAM1 gene and the ICAM-1 protein. We discuss the roles of ICAM-1 in the normal immune system and a selection of diseases to highlight the breadth and often double-edged nature of its functions. Finally, we discuss current therapeutics and opportunities for advancements.

Abstract
Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have been shown to suppress tumor growth, inhibit angiogenesis, regulate cellular signaling, and induce apoptosis in cancer cells. We have earlier reported that placenta-derived decidua parietalis mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (DPMSCs) not only retained their functional characteristics in the cancer microenvironment but also exhibited increased expression of anti-apoptotic genes, demonstrating their anti-tumor properties in the tumor setting. In this study, we have further evaluated the effects of DPMSCs on the functional outcome of human breast cancer cell line MDA231. MDA231 cells were exposed to DPMSCs, and their biological functions, including adhesion, proliferation, migration, and invasion, were evaluated. In addition, genomic and proteomic modifications of the MDA231 cell line, in response to the DPMSCs, were also evaluated. MDA231 cells exhibited a significant reduction in proliferation, migration, and invasion potential after their treatment with DPMSCs. Furthermore, DPMSC treatment diminished the angiogenic potential of MDA231 cells. DPMSC treatment modulated the expression of various pro-apoptotic as well as oncogenes in MDA231 cells. The properties of DPMSCs to inhibit the invasive characteristics of MDA231 cells demonstrate that they may be a useful candidate in a stem-cell-based therapy against cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Many recent studies have investigated the prognostic, diagnostic, and progressive features of soluble intercellular cell adhesion molecule-1 (sICAM-1) in lung cancer patients, but the results remained inconsistent. This study aimed to explore the value of serum sICAM-1 in patients with lung cancer. METHODS A comprehensive systematic literature search in the Wanfang databases, china national knowledge infrastructure, Pubmed, and Embase was carried out update to June 15, 2019. The standard mean difference (SMD), hazard ratio (HR), and 95% confidence interval (95% CI) were applied to investigate the effect sizes. RESULTS 23 observational studies were included. According to our results, the serum sICAM-1 concentrations in patients with lung cancer were significantly higher than that in controls (healthy controls: SMD: 4.08, 95% CI: 3.14-5.02, P < 0.001; benign lung diseases controls : SMD: 1.48, 95% CI: 0.23-2.73,P = 0.02). Fortunately, a subgroup analysis was performed by language, treatment status, and lung cancer types, and the statistical results were similar. Serum sICAM-1 levels were markedly higher in stage III/IV than stage I/II (SMD: 1.96, 95% CI: 1.08-2.84, P < 0.001), Additionally, lung cancer patients with lymph node metastasis had a higher concentrations of serum sICAM-1(SMD: 1.83, 95% CI: 0.95-2.72, P < 0.001), as well as with distant metastasis (SMD: 0.86, 95% CI: 0.47-1.25, P < 0.001). Additionally, patients with higher sICAM-1 levels were related to a significantly poorer prognosis (progression free survival: HR: 1.16, 95% CI: 1.07-1.26, P < 0.001; overall survival: HR: 1.45, 95% CI: 1.17-1.79, P = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Our study suggested that serum sICAM-1 levels may act as a potential marker for diagnosing lung cancer and predicting its staging, and were negatively correlated with prognosis of lung cancer.

Abstract
ICAM-1 is a cell surface glycoprotein and an adhesion receptor that is best known for regulating leukocyte recruitment from circulation to sites of inflammation. However, in addition to vascular endothelial cells, ICAM-1 expression is also robustly induced on epithelial and immune cells in response to inflammatory stimulation. Importantly, ICAM-1 serves as a biosensor to transduce outside-in-signaling via association of its cytoplasmic domain with the actin cytoskeleton following ligand engagement of the extracellular domain. Thus, ICAM-1 has emerged as a master regulator of many essential cellular functions both at the onset and at the resolution of pathologic conditions. Because the role of ICAM-1 in driving inflammatory responses is well recognized, this review will mainly focus on newly emerging roles of ICAM-1 in epithelial injury-resolution responses, as well as immune cell effector function in inflammation and tumorigenesis. ICAM-1 has been of clinical and therapeutic interest for some time now; however, several attempts at inhibiting its function to improve injury resolution have failed. Perhaps, better understanding of its beneficial roles in resolution of inflammation or its emerging function in tumorigenesis will spark new interest in revisiting the clinical value of ICAM-1 as a potential therapeutic target.

Abstract
Background: Leptin is considered a tumorigenic adipokine, suggested to promote tumorigenesis and progression in many cancers. On the other hand, intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) shows altered expression in a variety of benign and malignant diseases. Histologically, ICAM-1 expression is reported as proportional to cancer stage and considered as a potential diagnosis biomarker. The altered expressions of ICAM-1 and its soluble form in malignant diseases have gained interests in recent years. Material and methods: The expression of ICAM-1 and its regulatory signaling were examined by Western blot or flow cytometry. The effect of soluble ICAM-1 on osteoclast formation was investigated by tartrate-resistance acid phosphatase staining of RAW cells and tumor-induced osteolysis in vivo. Results: In our study, we found that leptin enhanced soluble ICAM-1 production but not surface ICAM-1 expression in lung and breast cancer cells, and this effect was regulated through leptin receptor (ObR), while silencing ObR abrogated leptin-induced soluble ICAM-1 expression. In addition, we revealed that leptin administration provoked the JAK1/2, STAT3, FAK, ERK, and GSK3αβ signaling cascade, leading to the elevation of ICAM-1 expression. Moreover, soluble ICAM-1 secreted by leptin-stimulated cancer cells synergize with the receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-B ligand (RANKL) in inducing osteoclast formation. Soluble ICAM also enhanced tumor-induced osteolysis in vivo. Conclusion: These findings suggest that soluble ICAM-1 produced under leptin treatment enhances osteoclast formation and is involved in tumor-induced osteolysis. Leptin plays an important role in physiology in health and diseases. Leptin affects immune responses that may induce inflammation and carcinogenesis. Abstract
Intercellular adhesion molecule (ICAM)-1, is a transmembrane glycoprotein of the immunoglobulin (Ig)-like superfamily, consisting of five extracellular Ig-like domains, a transmembrane domain and a short cytoplasmic tail. ICAM-1 is expressed in various cell types, including endothelial cells and leukocytes, and is involved in several physiological processes. Furthermore, it has additionally been reported to be expressed in various cancer cells, including melanoma, colorectal cancer and lymphoma. The majority of studies to date have focused on the expression of the ICAM-1 on the surface of tumor cells, without research into ICAM-1 expression at sites of metastasis. Cancer cells frequently metastasize to the liver, due to its unique physiology and specialized liver sinusoid capillary network. Liver sinusoidal endothelial cells constitutively express ICAM-1, which is upregulated under inflammatory conditions. Furthermore, liver ICAM-1 may be important during the development of liver metastasis. Therefore, it is necessary to improve the understanding of the mechanisms mediated by this adhesion molecule in order to develop host-directed anticancer therapies.

Abstract
Soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1(sICAM-1) has been implicated in tumor progression and metastasis. However the expression of circulating sICAM-1 as well as its diagnostic and prognostic value in patients with lung cancer remains controversial. We performed an electronic database (including PubMed, Web of Science, and Medline) search with the terms "ICAM", "intercellular adhesion molecule" and "lung cancer", and summarized the results of eligible studies in order to review the expression of sICAM-1 as well as its clinical significance in lung cancer. According to our literature search, we conducted a final analysis of 1258 patients from 16 studies. And we revealed that the circulating concentration of sICAM-1 in lung cancer patients was significantly higher than that in healthy controls. Additionally, baseline sICAM-1 levels apparently were associated with ECOG performance status, gender, histology type and disease stages. Furthermore, there seems to be a significantly inverse association between sICAM-1 levels, prognosis and response rate in NSCLC patients. In conclusion, sICAM-1 appeared to be a potential diagnostic and prognostic biomarker in lung cancer patients. Additional prospective studies are required to confirm this issue.

Abstract
Systemic inflammation plays an important role in the initiation, promotion, and progression of lung carcinogenesis. The effects of interventions to lower inflammation have not been explored. Accordingly, we conducted a pilot study to explore the effects of exercise training on changes in biomarkers of systemic inflammation among patients with malignant lung lesions. Using a single-group design, 12 patients with suspected operable lung cancer were provided with structured exercise training until surgical resection. Participants underwent cardiopulmonary exercise testing, 6 min walk testing, pulmonary function testing, and blood collection at baseline and immediately prior to surgical resection. Systemic inflammatory markers included intracellular adhesion molecule (ICAM)-1, macrophage inflammatory protein-1alpha, interleukin (IL)-6, IL-8, monocyte chemotactic protein-1, C-reactive protein, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha. The overall exercise adherence rate was 78%, with patients completing a mean of 30 +/- 25 sessions. Mean peak oxygen consumption increased 2.9 mL.kg-1.min-1 from baseline to presurgery (p = 0.016). Results indicate that exercise training resulted in a significant reduction in ICAM-1 (p = 0.041). Changes in other inflammatory markers did not reach statistical significance. Change in cardiorespiratory fitness was not associated with change in systemic inflammatory markers. This exploratory study provides an initial step for future studies to elucidate the potential role of exercise, as well as identify the underlying mechanisms of action, as a means of modulating the relationship between inflammation and cancer pathogenesis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Pulmonary resection may cause inflammatory changes with subsequent injury to the remaining lung and deterioration in respiratory function. This study investigated the pattern of serum inflammatory markers and exhaled breath condensate (EBC) in patients undergoing major lung resection due to bronchial carcinoma compared with minimally invasive thoracic surgery. METHODS The pro-inflammatory markers IL-1-beta, IL-6, IL-8, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) and soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (sICAM-1) were measured preoperatively (day -1) and on three postoperative days (day 1, 3, 7) in serum and EBC in patients after lobectomy or pneumonectomy due to bronchial carcinoma (test group) and in patients undergoing thoracoscopy with minimal wedge resection (control group). RESULTS All mediators were detectable in serum and all but IL-8 were detectable in EBC. No patient suffered postoperative respiratory failure. In the test group, serum IL-6 was significantly higher postoperatively compared with day -1 (P < 0.001). For EBC (test group), the postoperative values of IL-1-beta were significantly higher compared with day -1 (P = 0.005). In EBC (test group), day -1 TNF-alpha and sICAM-1 were significantly higher compared with controls (P < 0.029 and P = 0.032, respectively). There was no correlation between the levels of mediators and the extent of resection. CONCLUSIONS Pro-inflammatory markers are detected in EBC following pulmonary surgery. Mediators are detectable in both serum and EBC in patients with bronchial carcinoma undergoing pulmonary resection, but the levels are higher in EBC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Adhesion molecules are related to cell-to-cell interaction and inflammatory interaction. In addition, adhesive interactions between tumor cells and adjacent cells and/or extracellular matrix play important roles in the complex process of tumor growth and development. Among these adhesion molecules, expression of intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) has been identified in colon cancer, bladder cancer, lung cancer, melanoma, pancreatic cancer and hepatocellular carcinoma. In the current study, we analyzed serum ICAM-1 concentrations to investigate the relationship between the serum ICAM-1 level and prognosis in patients with lung cancer. METHODS Serum ICAM-1 was measured in 84 patients with lung cancer according to the pathologic type and clinical stage using the ICAM-1 ELISA kit. The Kaplan-Meier method was used to analyse survival time. RESULTS There was no difference in serum ICAM-1 concentration among the different stages of lung cancer. Furthermore, there was no difference observed between histologic tumor type with regard to serum ICAM-1 concentration. Although the difference was not significant, the overall survival times of patients with a low serum ICAM-1 concentration (< 306 ng/mL) was longer than that of patients with a high concentration (> or = 306 ng/mL) in non-small cell lung cancer patients. CONCLUSION These results suggest that high levels of serum ICAM-1 reflect poor prognosis for patients with non-small cell lung cancer.

Abstract
Intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) is an adhesion molecule that plays a crucial role in cell-cell interactions involved in the recruitment of cells and immune responses. Under some circumstances, ICAM-1 is found as a soluble protein that has the potential to influence the nature of immunoinflammatory responses. By examining cells and fluid from the pleural compartment of patients with cancer, tuberculosis, and congestive heart failure, the cellular source, conformation, control, and biological activity of soluble ICAM-1 (sICAM-1) were investigated. The results suggest that dimeric sICAM-1 was released locally in the pleural compartment of tuberculous and malignant effusions. sICAM-1 was shed from preexpressed surface ICAM-1 rather than produced de novo, and both CD45-positive leukocytes and cytokeratin-positive epithelial and mesothelial cells expressed ICAM-1, suggesting multiple cellular sources for sICAM-1. The expression of sICAM-1 was regulated because pleural macrophages caused release of sICAM-1 via a tumor necrosis factor-alpha-dependent mechanism. The functional significance of sICAM-1 was demonstrated by showing that pleural sICAM-1 interfered with conjugate formation between LAK cells and K562 cells, suggesting that pleural sICAM-1 plays an immunosuppressive role by inhibiting adhesion of cytotoxic lymphocytes and tumor cells. Thus, sICAM-1 is shed from the surface of cells in a regulated manner and has the potential to influence the immune response in the pleural space.

Abstract
To date, no soluble markers can discriminate benign from malignant breast lesions; therefore, to assess the diagnostic potential of circulating intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (sICAM-1), serum concentrations of sICAM-1 were quantitated in 230 consecutive patients that underwent surgery for breast neoplasias, utilizing an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Histological diagnosis revealed that 177 patients had breast cancer and 53 had a benign breast disease. In the cancer patient group, 90 subjects had pT1 tumors without (pT1N0M0, n = 46) or with (pT1N1M0, n = 41; pT1N2M0, n = 3) regional lymph node metastases. Mean levels of serum sICAM-1 of patients with pT1 breast cancer, without or with regional lymph node involvement, were significantly (P < 0.05) higher than those of patients with benign breast lesions and of 49 age-matched control subjects. Elevated levels of serum sICAM-1 were detected in 27/90 (30%) pT1 breast tumors and in 1/53 (2%) benign breast lesions; thus, among subjects with high levels of sICAM-1, 96% had breast cancer. No significant correlation was found between levels of serum sICAM-1 and breast cancer progression. These observations, altogether, suggest that in the presence of a suspicious breast neoplasm the quantitative analysis of serum sICAM-1 can orient clinical diagnosis towards malignancy.

Abstract
Background: Adhesion proteins such as soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (sICAM-1) may be important markers for early atherosclerosis and some other diseases. To devise optimum specimen collection procedures, we investigated the effects on serum sICAM-1 of several preanalytical factors (factors that occur before a specimen is analyzed) such as the time of the day, food ingestion, and physical and psychological stress.
Methods: Three sets of experiments were conducted: (a) 30 subjects were investigated during the morning, after an overnight fast, and then after the usual breakfast and at 1200; (b) 20 subjects were studied before and after exposure to thermal stress (sauna + swimming in ice-cold water); and (c) 15 volunteers were investigated after their driving license examination and during a (stress-free) control session. Conventional methods and kits were used to determine the blood picture and serum sICAM-1.
Results: All of these preanalytical factors induced a significant increase (∼10%) in the concentration of sICAM-1.
Conclusion: It is advisable to consider timing, food intake, and stress when collecting specimens and analyzing data on the concentration of sICAM-1 in serum.
