Evolving deep convolutional neutral network by hybrid sine-cosine and extreme learning machine for real-time COVID19 diagnosis from X-ray images

The COVID19 pandemic globally and significantly has affected the life and health of many communities. The early detection of infected patients is effective in fighting COVID19. Using radiology (X-Ray) images is, perhaps, the fastest way to diagnose the patients. Thereby, deep Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) can be considered as applicable tools to diagnose COVID19 positive cases. Due to the complicated architecture of a deep CNN, its real-time training and testing become a challenging problem. This paper proposes using the Extreme Learning Machine (ELM) instead of the last fully connected layer to address this deficiency. However, the parameters' stochastic tuning of ELM's supervised section causes the final model unreliability. Therefore, to cope with this problem and maintain network reliability, the sine-cosine algorithm was utilized to tune the ELM's parameters. The designed network is then benchmarked on the COVID-Xray-5k dataset, and the results are verified by a comparative study with canonical deep CNN, ELM optimized by cuckoo search, ELM optimized by genetic algorithm, and ELM optimized by whale optimization algorithm. The proposed approach outperforms comparative benchmarks with a final accuracy of 98.83% on the COVID-Xray-5k dataset, leading to a relative error reduction of 2.33% compared to a canonical deep CNN. Even more critical, the designed network's training time is only 0.9421 ms and the overall detection test time for 3100 images is 2.721 s.

Prognostic Nutritional Index, Controlling Nutritional Status (CONUT) Score, and Inflammatory Biomarkers as Predictors of Deep Vein Thrombosis, Acute Pulmonary Embolism, and Mortality in COVID-19 Patients

Background: Numerous tools, including nutritional and inflammatory markers, have been evaluated as the predictors of poor outcomes in COVID-19 patients. This study aims to verify the predictive role of the prognostic nutritional index (PNI), CONUT Score, and inflammatory markers (monocyte to lymphocyte ratio (MLR), neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR), systemic inflammatory index (SII), Systemic Inflammation Response Index (SIRI), and Aggregate Index of Systemic Inflammation (AISI)) in cases of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and acute pulmonary embolism (APE) risk, as well as mortality, in COVID-19 patients. Methods: The present study was designed as an observational, analytical, retrospective cohort study, and included 899 patients over the age of 18 who had a COVID-19 infection, confirmed through real time-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), and were admitted to the County Emergency Clinical Hospital and Modular Intensive Care Unit of UMFST “George Emil Palade” of Targu Mures, Romania between January 2020 and March 20212. Results: Non-Surviving patients were associated with a higher incidence of chronic kidney disease (p = 0.01), cardiovascular disease (atrial fibrillation (AF) p = 0.01; myocardial infarction (MI) p = 0.02; peripheral arterial disease (PAD) p = 0.0003), malignancy (p = 0.0001), tobacco (p = 0.0001), obesity (p = 0.01), dyslipidemia (p = 0.004), and malnutrition (p < 0.0001). Multivariate analysis showed that both nutritional and inflammatory markers had a high baseline value and were all independent predictors of adverse outcomes for all enrolled patients (for all p < 0.0001). The presence of PAD, malignancy, and tobacco, were also independent predictors of all outcomes. Conclusions: According to our findings, higher MLR, NLR, PLR, SII, SIRI, AISI, CONUT Score, and lower PNI values at admission strongly predict DVT risk, APE risk, and mortality in COVID-19 patients. Moreover, PAD, malignancy, and tobacco, all predicted all outcomes, while CKD predicts APE risk and mortality, but not the DVT risk.

New Real-Time Impulse Noise Removal Method Applied to Chest X-ray Images

In this paper, we propose a new Modified Laplacian Vector Median Filter (MLVMF) for real-time denoising complex images corrupted by "salt and pepper" impulsive noise. The method consists of two rounds with three steps each: the first round starts with the identification of pixels that may be contaminated by noise using a Modified Laplacian Filter. Then, corrupted pixels pass a neighborhood-based validation test. Finally, the Vector Median Filter is used to replace noisy pixels. The MLVMF uses a 5 × 5 window to observe the intensity variations around each pixel of the image with a rotation step of π/8 while the classic Laplacian filters often use rotation steps of π/2 or π/4. We see better identification of noise-corrupted pixels thanks to this rotation step refinement. Despite this advantage, a high percentage of the impulsive noise may cause two or more corrupted pixels (with the same intensity) to collide, preventing the identification of noise-corrupted pixels. A second round is then necessary using a second set of filters, still based on the Laplacian operator, but allowing focusing only on the collision phenomenon. To validate our method, MLVMF is firstly tested on standard images, with a noise percentage varying from 3% to 30%. Obtained performances in terms of processing time, as well as image restoration quality through the PSNR (Peak Signal to Noise Ratio) and the NCD (Normalized Color Difference) metrics, are compared to the performances of VMF (Vector Median Filter), VMRHF (Vector Median-Rational Hybrid Filter), and MSMF (Modified Switching Median Filter). A second test is performed on several noisy chest x-ray images used in cardiovascular disease diagnosis as well as COVID-19 diagnosis. The proposed method shows a very good quality of restoration on this type of image, particularly when the percentage of noise is high. The MLVMF provides a high PSNR value of 5.5% and a low NCD value of 18.2%. Finally, an optimized Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) design is proposed to implement the proposed method for real-time processing. The proposed hardware implementation allows an execution time equal to 9 ms per 256 × 256 color image.

Distributed messaging and light streaming system for combating pandemics: A case study on spatial analysis of COVID-19 Geo-tagged Twitter dataset

Real-time data processing and distributed messaging are problems that have been worked on for a long time. As the amount of spatial data being produced has increased, coupled with increasingly complex software solutions being developed, there is a need for platforms that address these needs. In this paper, we present a distributed and light streaming system for combating pandemics and give a case study on spatial analysis of the COVID-19 geo-tagged Twitter dataset. In this system, three of the major components are the translation of tweets matching with user-defined bounding boxes, name entity recognition in tweets, and skyline queries. Apache Pulsar addresses all these components in this paper. With the proposed system, end-users have the capability of getting COVID-19 related information within foreign regions, filtering/searching location, organization, person, and miscellaneous based tweets, and performing skyline based queries. The evaluation of the proposed system is done based on certain characteristics and performance metrics. The study differs greatly from other studies in terms of using distributed computing and big data technologies on spatial data to combat COVID-19. It is concluded that Pulsar is designed to handle large amounts of long-term on disk persistence.
