Generative Deep Learning-Based Thermographic Inspection of Artwork

Infrared thermography is a widely utilized nondestructive testing technique in the field of artwork inspection. However, raw thermograms often suffer from problems, such as limited quantity and high background noise, due to limitations inherent in the acquisition equipment and experimental environment. To overcome these challenges, there is a growing interest in developing thermographic data enhancement methods. In this study, a defect inspection method for artwork based on principal component analysis is proposed, incorporating two distinct deep learning approaches for thermographic data enhancement: spectral normalized generative adversarial network (SNGAN) and convolutional autoencoder (CAE). The SNGAN strategy focuses on augmenting the thermal images, while the CAE strategy emphasizes enhancing their quality. Subsequently, principal component thermography (PCT) is employed to analyze the processed data and improve the detectability of defects. Comparing the results to using PCT alone, the integration of the SNGAN strategy led to a 1.08% enhancement in the signal-to-noise ratio, while the utilization of the CAE strategy resulted in an 8.73% improvement.

Human Arm Workout Classification by Arm Sleeve Device Based on Machine Learning Algorithms

Wearables have been applied in the field of fitness in recent years to monitor human muscles by recording electromyographic (EMG) signals. Understanding muscle activation during exercise routines allows strength athletes to achieve the best results. Hydrogels, which are widely used as wet electrodes in the fitness field, are not an option for wearable devices due to their characteristics of being disposable and skin-adhesion. Therefore, a lot of research has been conducted on the development of dry electrodes that can replace hydrogels. In this study, to make it wearable, neoprene was impregnated with high-purity SWCNTs to develop a dry electrode with less noise than hydrogel. Due to the impact of COVID-19, the demand for workouts to improve muscle strength, such as home gyms and personal trainers (PT), has increased. Although there are many studies related to aerobic exercise, there is a lack of wearable devices that can assist in improving muscle strength. This pilot study proposed the development of a wearable device in the form of an arm sleeve that can monitor muscle activity by recording EMG signals of the arm using nine textile-based sensors. In addition, some machine learning models were used to classify three arm target movements such as wrist curl, biceps curl, and dumbbell kickback from the EMG signals recorded by fiber-based sensors. The results obtained show that the EMG signal recorded by the proposed electrode contains less noise compared to that collected by the wet electrode. This was also evidenced by the high accuracy of the classification model used to classify the three arms workouts. This work classification device is an essential step towards wearable devices that can replace next-generation PT.

Hybrid Multilevel Thresholding Image Segmentation Approach for Brain MRI

A brain tumor is an abnormal growth of tissues inside the skull that can interfere with the normal functioning of the neurological system and the body, and it is responsible for the deaths of many individuals every year. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) techniques are widely used for detection of brain cancers. Segmentation of brain MRI is a foundational process with numerous clinical applications in neurology, including quantitative analysis, operational planning, and functional imaging. The segmentation process classifies the pixel values of the image into different groups based on the intensity levels of the pixels and a selected threshold value. The quality of the medical image segmentation extensively depends on the method which selects the threshold values of the image for the segmentation process. The traditional multilevel thresholding methods are computationally expensive since these methods thoroughly search for the best threshold values to maximize the accuracy of the segmentation process. Metaheuristic optimization algorithms are widely used for solving such problems. However, these algorithms suffer from the problem of local optima stagnation and slow convergence speed. In this work, the original Bald Eagle Search (BES) algorithm problems are resolved in the proposed Dynamic Opposite Bald Eagle Search (DOBES) algorithm by employing Dynamic Opposition Learning (DOL) at the initial, as well as exploitation, phases. Using the DOBES algorithm, a hybrid multilevel thresholding image segmentation approach has been developed for MRI image segmentation. The hybrid approach is divided into two phases. In the first phase, the proposed DOBES optimization algorithm is used for the multilevel thresholding. After the selection of the thresholds for the image segmentation, the morphological operations have been utilized in the second phase to remove the unwanted area present in the segmented image. The performance efficiency of the proposed DOBES based multilevel thresholding algorithm with respect to BES has been verified using the five benchmark images. The proposed DOBES based multilevel thresholding algorithm attains higher Peak Signal-to-Noise ratio (PSNR) and Structured Similarity Index Measure (SSIM) value in comparison to the BES algorithm for the benchmark images. Additionally, the proposed hybrid multilevel thresholding segmentation approach has been compared with the existing segmentation algorithms to validate its significance. The results show that the proposed algorithm performs better for tumor segmentation in MRI images as the SSIM value attained using the proposed hybrid segmentation approach is nearer to 1 when compared with ground truth images.

Gait Event Prediction Using Surface Electromyography in Parkinsonian Patients

Gait disturbances are common manifestations of Parkinson's disease (PD), with unmet therapeutic needs. Inertial measurement units (IMUs) are capable of monitoring gait, but they lack neurophysiological information that may be crucial for studying gait disturbances in these patients. Here, we present a machine learning approach to approximate IMU angular velocity profiles and subsequently gait events using electromyographic (EMG) channels during overground walking in patients with PD. We recorded six parkinsonian patients while they walked for at least three minutes. Patient-agnostic regression models were trained on temporally embedded EMG time series of different combinations of up to five leg muscles bilaterally (i.e., tibialis anterior, soleus, gastrocnemius medialis, gastrocnemius lateralis, and vastus lateralis). Gait events could be detected with high temporal precision (median displacement of <50 ms), low numbers of missed events (<2%), and next to no false-positive event detections (<0.1%). Swing and stance phases could thus be determined with high fidelity (median F1-score of ~0.9). Interestingly, the best performance was obtained using as few as two EMG probes placed on the left and right vastus lateralis. Our results demonstrate the practical utility of the proposed EMG-based system for gait event prediction, which allows the simultaneous acquisition of an electromyographic signal to be performed. This gait analysis approach has the potential to make additional measurement devices such as IMUs and force plates less essential, thereby reducing financial and preparation overheads and discomfort factors in gait studies.

In-Home Older Adults' Activity Pattern Monitoring Using Depth Sensors: A Review

The global population is aging due to many factors, including longer life expectancy through better healthcare, changing diet, physical activity, etc. We are also witnessing various frequent epidemics as well as pandemics. The existing healthcare system has failed to deliver the care and support needed to our older adults (seniors) during these frequent outbreaks. Sophisticated sensor-based in-home care systems may offer an effective solution to this global crisis. The monitoring system is the key component of any in-home care system. The evidence indicates that they are more useful when implemented in a non-intrusive manner through different visual and audio sensors. Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Computer Vision (CV) techniques may be ideal for this purpose. Since the RGB imagery-based CV technique may compromise privacy, people often hesitate to utilize in-home care systems which use this technology. Depth, thermal, and audio-based CV techniques could be meaningful substitutes here. Due to the need to monitor larger areas, this review article presents a systematic discussion on the state-of-the-art using depth sensors as primary data-capturing techniques. We mainly focused on fall detection and other health-related physical patterns. As gait parameters may help to detect these activities, we also considered depth sensor-based gait parameters separately. The article provides discussions on the topic in relation to the terminology, reviews, a survey of popular datasets, and future scopes.
