Influence of exercise training and eating behavior on arterial stiffness in young healthy students

Association between eating behaviour and 13-year cardiovascular damages in the initially healthy STANISLAS cohort

AIMS

Several dimensions of eating behaviour (EB), such as restrained eating (RE), appear to be cross-sectionally associated with certain cardiovascular (CV) diseases and metabolic risk factors although little is known regarding longitudinal associations. This study aimed to assess the associations between EB and CV damage or metabolic syndrome after 13 years, in initially healthy individuals.

METHODS AND RESULTS

This study included 1109 participants from the familial STANISLAS (Suivi Temporaire Annuel Non-Invasif de la Santé des Lorrains Assurés Sociaux) cohort study. Emotional eating (EmE), RE, and external eating were assessed using the Dutch Eating Behaviour Questionnaire. Metabolic syndrome and CV damages such as carotid-femoral pulse-wave velocity (cfPWV), left ventricular mass, carotid intima-media thickness, and diastolic dysfunction (DD) were measured after a period of 13 years. Mixed model analysis with a family random effect and adjustment for age, sex, education, temporal gap, physical activity, metabolic factors at baseline, and the onset of CV disease during follow-up, and mediation analysis were performed in adults and adolescents separately. Among adults, EmE was associated with a 38% increased risk of DD 13 years later [odds ratio = 1.38 (1.05; 1.83)]. Stress level mediated 31.9% of this association (P = 0.01). Emotional eating was positively associated with cfPWV (β=0.02 [0.01; 0.04]). External eating was slightly associated with lower cfPWV (β=-0.03 [-0.05; -0.01]). No associations were observed between EB dimensions and metabolic syndrome. Energy intake was not found to be a mediator of any associations.

CONCLUSION

Our results suggest that CV prevention should also take into account EB and include emotion regulation skills teaching.

INFLUENCE OF SQUAT TRAINING ON LOWER LIMB MUSCULAR STRENGTH IN KUNG FU ATHLETES

ABSTRACT Introduction Aerobic and anaerobic skills are essential characteristics in Kung Fu competitions. Research concerning their repercussions on athletes’ body composition has gained emphasis due to increased sports competitiveness. Squat training is used in martial arts, but there are no reports about the results in kung fu practitioners. Objective Investigate the effects of squat training on lower limb strength in Kung Fu athletes. Methods 18 martial arts athletes were randomly divided into dynamic preparation activities with stretching (control), squat and half-squat exercises. Results The paired T-test result of the control subjects was P=0.578, and the paired squat test result, relative to the control group, before and after the experiment was P=0.164. The power gain in the body posture trained with squat was 24.14 z 9.81KG, and in the half squat was 23.10±11.75KG. The strength gain in the body posture with half squat is 29.75±10.79KG versus 20.59±12.59KG in the squat test. Conclusion After six weeks of training, both the squat and half squat groups significantly improved the maximum results of the lower limb strength tests. The muscular strength of athletes is improved throughout the range of motion, reducing the injury risk on the athletes. Evidence Level II; Therapeutic Studies - Investigating the result.

College Students' Learning Performance, Teaching Skills, and Teaching Innovation in Intercultural Communication Class: Evidence Based on Experiential Learning Theory

In China, the improvement of the learner performance is critical a challenge for the teaching staff and the management in intercultural communication class. Indeed, the administration of the Chinese schools is failed to provide effective learning to the students with innovative methods. The objective of this study was to identify the role of college students' learning performance, teaching skills, and teaching innovation in intercultural communication class. This study is based on the quantitative data collected on a five-point Likert scale from the target respondents who were the students of different colleges and 700 questionnaires distributed for it. The study concludes that there is a significant relationship among abstract conceptualization, active participation, and reflective observation in students' learning performance. Furthermore, this study highlights that the mediating role of teaching innovation is critical for students' learning performance. This study contributes to the literature with a significant theoretical framework. Finally, this study provides significant theoretical implications and practical implications which are key game-changers for improving the performance of the students in the intercultural communication class.

Differences between Elite Male and Female Badminton Athletes Regarding Heart Rate Variability, Arterial Stiffness, and Aerobic Capacity

Cardiovascular health and aerobic capacity play crucial roles in determining the performance of athletes in the highly competitive sport of badminton. Few studies have directly compared heart rate variability (HRV), arterial stiffness, and aerobic capacity between male and female athletes, especially among badminton athletes. This study investigated sex differences in HRV, arterial stiffness, and aerobic capacity in badminton athletes. Elite badminton athletes were recruited and divided into male (n = 20, 21.0 ± 1.8 years old) and female (n = 16, 21.2 ± 2.3 years old) groups. Both groups performed an incremental treadmill running test for the evaluation of maximal oxygen consumption (V.O2max), anaerobic threshold, and time to exhaustion. They started exercising at a treadmill speed of 2.7 km/h and an inclination of 10% gradient for 3 min, and the speed and inclination were gradually increased every 3 min until they were exhausted or fatigued volitionally. HRV was examined using the Polar heart rate monitor over a period of 5 min at rest in the supine position. Subsequently, the index of arterial stiffness was examined under the same condition. Our results revealed significant differences between the male and female athletes in V.O2max (men: 60.38 ± 8.98 mL/kg/min, women: 48.13 ± 7.72 mL/kg/min, p < 0.05), anaerobic threshold (men: 41.50 ± 7.26 mL/kg/min, women: 32.51 ± 6.19 mL/kg/min, p < 0.05), time to exhaustion (men: 902.15 ± 120.15 s, women: 780.56 ± 67.63 s, p < 0.05), systolic blood pressure (men: 125.27 ± 7.76 mmHg, women: 107.16 ± 11.09 mmHg, p < 0.05), and arterial stiffness index (men: 63.56 ± 12.55, women: 53.83 ± 8.03, p < 0.05). However, no significant differences in HRV measures were observed between the two groups. These findings suggested that the male badminton athletes demonstrated significantly higher aerobic capacity than did the female athletes, but there were no significant differences in HRV measures. The female athletes exhibited superior arterial function, compared with their male counterparts.

Role of politically motivated internet addiction and ideological passion in linking college student's mental health education and wellbeing

College students are increasingly reporting common mental health issues like depression and anxiety, raising severe concerns for students' psychological wellbeing. Specifically, after the emergence of Post-COVID-19, digitization caused a potential role in mitigating students' psychological concerns. Therefore, the role of mental health education has been regarded as a topic of interest in managing the issue of Chinese college students' mental wellbeing. This study intends to look into the relationship between mental health education and psychological wellbeing, along with the moderating role of politically motivated internet addiction and the ideological passion of college students. For the given reason, the random sampling method was employed for collecting data from target respondents. The study uses 750 questionnaires prepared on a five-point Likert scale that were distributed to the respondents with an expected response rate of 50%. The partial least square (PLS) software was used to analyze the data for this study. The study concludes that there is a significant moderating role of politically motivated internet addiction and ideological passion in the relationship between college students' mental health and wellbeing. The study meaningfully contributes to the body of knowledge by establishing the unique, positive moderating role of Politically motivated internet addition in strengthening the relationship which undoubtedly will assist in improving the psychological wellbeing of college students through mental health education policies and implications.

The Relationship Between Dietary Choices and Health and Premature Vascular Ageing

The paper aims to review the available data about the main mechanisms enabling improvement or accelerating vascular ageing due to food choices, considering recent experimental and clinical data, and emphasising potential implications for clinical practice and therapy. The main food choices which will be discussed are diets rich in fruits and vegetables, the Mediterranean diet, polyunsaturated fatty acids, cocoa, caffeine, tea, meat, dairy products, sodium, and potassium intake.

Associations between Intrinsic Heart Rate, P Wave and QT Interval Durations and Pulse Wave Analysis in Patients with Hypertension and High Normal Blood Pressure

The present study aimed to explore the relationship between electrocardiographic (ECG) and pulse wave analysis variables in patients with hypertension (HT) and high normal blood pressure (HNBP). A total of 56 consecutive, middle-aged hypertensive and HNBP patients underwent pulse wave analysis and standard 12-lead ECG. Pulse wave velocity (PWV), heart rate, intrinsic heart rate (IHR), P wave and QT interval durations were as follows: 7.26 ± 0.69 m/s, 69 ± 11 beats/minute, 91 ± 3 beats/minute, 105 ± 22 mm and 409 ± 64 mm, respectively. Significant correlations were obtained between PWV and IHR and P wave duration, respectively, between early vascular aging (EVA) and P wave and QT interval durations, respectively. Linear regression analysis revealed significant associations between ECG and pulse wave analysis variables but multiple regression analysis revealed only IHR as an independent predictor of PWV, even after adjusting for blood pressure variables and therapy. Receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis revealed P wave duration (area under curve (AUC) = 0.731; 95% CI: 0.569-0.893) as a predictor of pathological PWV, and P wave and QT interval durations were found as sensitive and specific predictors of EVA. ECG provides information about PWV and EVA in patients with HT and HNBP. IHR and P wave durations are independent predictors of PWV, and P wave and QT interval may predict EVA.

Effects of Whole-Body Vibration Exercises on Parameters Related to the Sleep Quality in Metabolic Syndrome Individuals: A Clinical Trial Study

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is an undesirable clinical condition with physiological, biochemical, clinical, and metabolic factors that contribute to increased cardiovascular risks (CR). A poor sleep quality might be found in obese and MetS individuals. Whole-body vibration (WBV) exercise has been used on the management of MetS individuals. This clinical trial investigated the effect of WBV exercise on parameters related to the sleep quality in MetS individuals. After randomization, nine individuals (seven women and two men) were exposed to a fixed frequency (FF) and ten individuals (eight women and two men) were exposed to a variable frequency (VF). Both groups performed the protocol twice a week, for 6 weeks. All of the evaluations were performed before the first and after the last sessions. Anthropometric and cardiovascular parameters were measured before and after the 6-week intervention. Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), and Berlin Questionnaire were also used to evaluate the quality of the sleep. A significant (p ≤ 0.05) reduction of the waist circumference in the VFG and an increase of the heart rate were found in the FFG and VFG group. The score of the PSQI of the both groups decreased significantly (p = 0.01). The score of the ESS decreased (p = 0.04) only in the VF group. The scores of the Berlin Questionnaire were not altered in both groups. In conclusion, WBV intervention was capable in interfering with physiological mechanisms with effects on the WC and HR, leading to the improvement of the quality of sleep in MetS individuals. WBV exercise might be an important clinical intervention to the management of some factors associated with poor quality of sleep (FFG and VFG) and in the daytime sleepiness in MetS individuals with variable frequencies (5–16 Hz) (VFG).

Correlations between Vascular Stiffness Indicators, OPG, and 25-OH Vitamin D3 Status in Heart Failure Patients

Background and objectives: The purpose of the study is to correlate vascular calcification biomarkers osteoprotegerin (OPG) and 25-hydroxyvitamin D₃ (25-OH-D₃), indicators of arterial stiffness carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (c-f PWV) and renal resistive index (RRI), with parameters of left ventricular function in heart failure patients versus control. Materials and methods: Our case-control study compared 60 patients with ischemic heart failure and reduced left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) (<40%) with a control group of 60 healthy age-matched subjects (CON). Serum levels of OPG and 25-OH-D₃ were determined by ELISA. Left ventricular volumes (LVESV, LVEDV) and LVEF were measured by echocardiography. C-f PWV was determined using the arteriograph device. RRI was measured by duplex Doppler. Peak systolic velocity (PSV) and minimum end-diastolic velocity (EDV) were determined using angle correction. The estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was calculated using the MDRD equation. The Pearson’s correlation coefficient was used for interpretation of results. Results: OPG values were significantly higher in heart failure (HF) patients vs. CON (4.7 ± 0.25 vs. 1.3 ± 0.67 ng/mL, p < 0.001). 25-OH vitamin D₃ levels were significantly lower in HF patients vs. CON (20.49 ± 7.31 vs. 37.09 ± 4.59 ng/mL, p < 0.001). Multiple regression analysis considering 25-OH D3 as a dependent variable demonstrated indicators of vascular stiffness RRI, c-f PWV and vascular calcification biomarker OPG as predictors. OPG values were significantly correlated with cardiac parameters LVEDV (r = 0.862, p < 0.001), LVEF (r = −0.832, p < 0.001), and c-f PWV(r = 0.833, p < 0.001), and also with 25-OH-D₃ (r = −0.636, p < 0.001). RRI values were significantly correlated with cardiac parameters LVEDV (r = 0.586, p < 0.001) and LVEF (r = −0.587, p < 0.001), and with eGFR (r = −0.488, p < 0.001), c-f PWV(r = 0.640, p < 0.001), and 25-OH-D₃ (r = −0.732, p < 0.001). Conclusions: This study showed significant correlations between vitamin D deficit and vascular stiffness indicators in heart failure patients with reduced ejection fraction, demonstrating the importance of these examinations for a better evaluation of these patients. Together with the evaluation of renal function, the measurement of vascular stiffness indicators and biomarkers might play a key role in identifying patients at greater risk for worsening disease prognosis and for shorter life expectancy, who could benefit from vitamin D supplementation. Benefits of multiple micronutrient supplementation in heart failure: A comprehensive review

BACKGROUND

Multiple micronutrient supplementation has been suggested to have a role on health outcomes in patients with heart failure (HF), but the evidence is inconclusive.

OBJECTIVE

To elucidate the role of multiple micronutrient supplementation in heart failure we performed a comprehensive review of the literature.

METHODS AND RESULTS

The search in databases included PUBMED (until June 2018) to detect randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and meta-analyzes that investigated the impact of micronutrient supplementation in HF.

RESULTS

With more than 2357 titles and abstracts reviewed, we included only the studies suitable for the final review. Whether alone or in combination, micronutrients have been found to improve the health outcomes of patients with HF by improving symptoms, work capacity and left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), thus increasing the quality of life in these patients.

CONCLUSION

Future studies are needed to document the effects of multiple micronutrient associations in order to include them in nutritional guidelines to increase survival and to improve quality of life in patients with heart failure.

Relationship between pulmonary function and peripheral vascular function in older Chinese: Guangzhou biobank cohort study-CVD

BACKGROUND

Findings describing the relationship between pulmonary function and peripheral vascular function have been inconclusive. We explored this relationship in Guangzhou Biobank Cohort Study-Cardiovascular Subcohort (GBCS-CVD).

METHODS

Brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) and ankle brachial index (ABI) were measured by a waveform analyser, and pulmonary function by turbine flowmeter spirometry. Predicted forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) and forced vital capacity (FVC) were derived using equations for Chinese. Regression analyses were used to investigate the association.

RESULTS

Of 1528 older Chinese, 980 (64.1%) had arterial stiffness (baPWV ≥1400 cm/s), but only 29 (1.9%) had peripheral arterial disease (PAD) (ABI < 0.9). The mean (±standard deviation, SD) baPWV was 1547 (±298) cm/s and mean (±SD) ABI 1.09 (±0.09). Before and after adjusting for potential confounders, baPWV was negatively associated with FEV1 and FVC % predicted (% predicted = observed/predicted × 100%) (adjusted β: - 0.95 and - 1.16 respectively, p < 0.05), and ABI was marginally non-significantly positively associated with FEV1% predicted (adjusted β 0.02, p = 0.32) and FVC% predicted (adjusted β 0.02, p = 0.18). Compared to participants in the highest tertile of pulmonary function, those in the lowest had higher risk of arterial stiffness (adjusted odds ratio (AOR) 1.51, 95% CI 1.09-2.10 for FEV1 and AOR 1.69, 95% CI 1.22-2.33 for FVC), but the higher risk of PAD was marginally non-significant (AOR 1.64, p = 0.42 for FEV1 and AOR 1.65, p = 0.24 for FVC).

CONCLUSION

In older relatively healthy normal weight Chinese, pulmonary function was inversely dose-dependently associated with arterial stiffness, while the association with PAD was much weaker.
