Abstract
Background: Oral graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) is characterized by mucosal lesions, salivary gland dysfunction etc., accompanied by pain and oral dysfunction. The efficacy of photobiomodulation (PBM) in managing pain and inflammation has been demonstrated. PBM has been applied in oral GVHD and is regarded as a potent adjunctive therapy. Objective: To review the application of PBM for oral GVHD and summarize its biological mechanisms and recommended parameters. Materials and Methods: The article provides an overview of the therapeutic effects of PBM in oral GVHD cases. It analyzes the biological mechanisms from different aspects and explores the potential prospects of PBM, and appropriate parameters and frequency for GVHD are recommended. Conclusions: The efficacy of PBM in oral GVHD has been demonstrated through symptom alleviation and function improvement. It is recommended as an adjuvant therapy for oral GVHD. However, further research is required to explore optimal devices, parameters, and potential complications associated with using PBM in oral GVHD.

Abstract
Bone repair is faced with obstacles such as slow repair rates and limited bone regeneration capacity. Delayed healing even nonunion could occur in bone defects, influencing the life quality of patients severely. Photobiomodulation (PBM) utilizes different light sources to derive beneficial therapeutic effects with the advantage of being non-invasive and painless, providing a promising strategy for accelerating bone repair. In this review, we summarize the parameters, mechanisms, and effects of PBM regulating bone repair, and further conclude the current clinical application of PBM devices in bone repair. The wavelength of 635-980 nm, the output power of 40-100 mW, and the energy density of less than 100 J/cm2 are the most commonly used parameters. New technologies, including needle systems and biocompatible and implantable optical fibers, offer references to realize an efficient and safe strategy for bone repair. Further research is required to establish the reliability of outcomes from in vivo and in vitro studies and to standardize clinical trial protocols.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) and Photobiomodulation (PBM) are recognized for their potential in treating head and neck conditions. The heterogeneity of human tissue optical properties presents a challenge for effective dosimetry. The porcine mandible cadaver serves as an excellent model and has several similarities to human tissues of the dental oral craniofacial complex. This study aims to validate a novel modeling system that will help refine PDT and PBM dosimetry for the head and neck region. METHODS AND MATERIALS Light transmission was analyzed through several tissue combinations at distances of 2 mm to 10 mm. Maximum light fluence rates (mW/cm2) were compared across tissue types to reveal the effects of tissue heterogeneity. RESULTS The study revealed that light fluence is affected by tissue composition, with dentin/enamel showing reduced transmission and soft tissue regions exhibiting elevated values. The porcine model has proven to be efficient in mimicking human tissue responses to light, enabling the potential to optimize future protocols. CONCLUSION The porcine mandible cadaver is a novel model to understand the complex interactions between light and tissue. This study provides a foundation for future investigations into dosimetry optimization for PDT and PBM.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The introduction of targeted therapy and immunotherapy has tremendously changed the clinical outcomes and prognosis of cancer patients. Despite innovative pharmacological therapies and improved radiotherapy (RT) techniques, patients continue to suffer from side effects, of which oral mucositis (OM) is still the most impactful, especially for quality of life. AREAS COVERED We provide an overview of current advances in cancer pharmacotherapy and RT, in relation to their potential to cause OM, and of the less explored and more recent literature reports related to the best management of OM. We have analyzed natural/antioxidant agents, probiotics, mucosal protectants and healing coadjuvants, pharmacotherapies, immunomodulatory and anticancer agents, photobiomodulation and the impact of technology. EXPERT OPINION The discovery of more precise pathophysiologic mechanisms of CT and RT-induced OM has outlined that OM has a multifactorial origin, including direct effects, oxidative damage, upregulation of immunologic factors, and effects on oral flora. A persistent upregulated immune response, associated with factors related to patients' characteristics, may contribute to more severe and long-lasting OM. The goal is strategies to conjugate individual patient, disease, and therapy-related factors to guide OM prevention or treatment. Despite further high-quality research is warranted, the issue of prevention is paramount in future strategies.

Abstract
In this work, we have studied the multi-photon excited photoluminescence from metal nanoclusters (NCs) of Au, Ag and Pt embedded in Al2O3matrix by ion implantation. The thermal annealing process allows to obtain a system composed of larger plasmonic metal nanoparticles (NPs) surrounded by photoluminescent ultra-small metal NCs. By exciting at 1064 nm, visible emission, ranging from 450 to 800 nm, was detected. The second and fourth-order nature of the multiphoton process was verified in a power-dependent study measured for each sample below the damage threshold. Experiments show that Au and Ag NCs exhibit a four-fold enhanced multiphoton excited photoluminescence with respect to that observed for Pt NCs, which can be explained as a result of a plasmon-mediated near-field process that is of less intensity for Pt NPs. These findings provide new opportunities to combine plasmonic nanoparticles and photoluminescent nanoclusters inside a robust inorganic matrix to improve their optical properties. Plasmon-enhanced multiphoton excited photoluminescence from metal nanoclusters may find potential application as ultrasmall fluorophores in multiphoton sensing, and in the development of solar cells with highly efficient energy conversion modules.

Abstract
The absence of an interdental papilla, termed "black triangle," presents a challenge in aesthetic restorations. Photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) is the non-thermal therapeutic use of light in order to positively modulate biological activity and has shown promise in tissue regeneration, wound healing, and inflammation reduction. This case report introduces a modified PBM protocol known as "hemolasertherapy" aimed at regenerating the gingival interdental papilla to fill the black triangle. In this case report, a 34-year-old female with an unaesthetic black triangle between the maxillary central incisors presented for treatment. Before surgical intervention, our suggested protocol was proposed and explained, detailing potential risks and outcomes. After proper scaling root planning, a suggested protocol with PBM was made. PBM application with a 635 nm wavelength diode laser at four points around the area between the two maxillary central incisors was made: coronal third and apical third of the papilla and mesial and distal of the papilla. Then, bleeding was provoked with a curette inside the sulcus between 11 and 21 (concerned area) by applying pressure on the junctional epithelium and the supracrestal connective tissue. After a few seconds, blood spontaneously filled the "black triangle" coronal to the interdental papilla and was left undisturbed. At this point, PBM was applied again on the same four points already described. The irradiation parameters during all PBM treatments were contact mode and continuous mode, 635 nm wavelength, spot size of 8mm, power of 50 mW, irradiation time on each point of 50 seconds, and energy density of 4.976 J/cm2. After the intervention, the patient was prohibited from smoking, using mouthwash, drinking, and brushing for two hours. The exact same procedure was repeated five and 10 days after the first intervention. Follow-up was made for three months after the intervention. The assessment indicated a minor increase in the papilla height, which was not enough for a complete closure of the "black triangle." However, there was a reduction in the appearance of the black triangle. This case report suggests that PBM if used within our suggested protocol can increase the height of the gingival interdental papilla leading to a more pleasant aesthetic appearance. It is important to note that its effectiveness might be limited to specific conditions. In summary, the presented case report showcased a slight extension of the gingival interdental papilla. Further studies are essential to validate these observations.

Abstract
We investigated the mechanism of action of photobiomodulation (PBM) with light-emitting diode (led) 640 nm of glutamine-dependent CT26 cells. Cells were exposed to 0.147-10.979 mW/cm2 of 640 ± 15 nm laser light for 15 min/day for 10 days. Cell proliferation and apoptosis were detected by MTT (3-(4,5)-dimethylthiahiazo (-z-y1)-3,5-diphenytetrazoliumromide) and annexin V-FITC assays. mRNA and protein levels of cell proliferation-related genes were measured by RT-PCR and western blotting, respectively. With Gln 7.94 mM, on Day 8 and 10, genes GLUT1, MEK1, ERK2, BCL2, E2F1, HO-1, Ctnnb1, and Per2 was significantly upregulated (p < 0.01) of glutamine addiction. In PBM therapy, compared with the non-illuminated group, 2.17 mW/cm2 can significantly reduce cell apoptosis, the mRNA level of gene mTOR1 was significantly upregulated, and the protein level of raptor of GLUT1 and mTOR1, MEK1/2, and ERK1/2 were upregulated. LED 640 nm inhibits cell apoptosis without increasing cell proliferation by regulating GLUT1, MEK/ERK, and PI3K/AKT/mTOR signals.

Abstract
Human umbilical cord matrix-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hUCMs) are considered as ideal tools for cell therapy procedures and regenerative medicine. The capacity of these cells to differentiate into neural lineage cells make them potentially important in the treatment of various neurodegenerative diseases. An electronic search was performed in Web of Science, PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus and Google Scholar databases for articles published from January 1990 to March 2022. This review discusses the current knowledge on the effect of various factors, including physical, chemical and biological stimuli which play a key role in the differentiation of hUCMs into neural and glial cells. Moreover, the currently understood molecular mechanisms involved in the neural differentiation of hUCMs under various environmental stimuli are reviewed. Various stimuli, especially physical stimuli and specifically different light sources, have revealed effects on neural differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells, including hUCMs; however, due to the lack of information about the exact mechanisms, there is still a need to find optimal conditions to promote the differentiation capacity of these cells which in turn can lead to significant progress in the clinical application of hUCMs for the treatment of neurological disorders.

Abstract
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a global health challenge. AMD causes visual impairment and blindness, particularly in older individuals. This multifaceted disease progresses through various stages, from asymptomatic dry to advanced wet AMD, driven by various factors including inflammation and oxidative stress. Current treatments are effective mainly for wet AMD; the therapeutic options for dry AMD are limited. Photobiomodulation (PBM) using low-energy light in the red-to-near-infrared range is a promising treatment for retinal diseases. This study investigated the effects of multi-wavelength PBM (680, 780, and 830 nm) on sodium iodate-induced oxidatively damaged retinal tissue. In an in vivo rat model of AMD induced by sodium iodate, multi-wavelength PBM effectively protected the retinal layers, reduced retinal apoptosis, and prevented rod bipolar cell depletion. Furthermore, PBM inhibited photoreceptor degeneration and reduced retinal pigment epithelium toxicity. These results suggest that multi-wavelength PBM may be a useful therapeutic strategy for AMD, mitigating oxidative stress, preserving retinal integrity, and preventing apoptosis.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to perform a systematic review to evaluate the impact of photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) for the prevention of oral mucositis (OM) on the quality of life (QoL) of patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) undergoing radiation therapy. This study followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis guidelines. The search strategy was performed in five electronic databases (Cochrane, Embase, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science). The included studies assessed the QoL of patients undergoing radiation therapy (RT) for HNC and undergoing PBMT for the management of OM. Seven articles met the eligibility criteria. Data extraction was performed in the selected studies including the PBMT parameters (active medium, application procedure, wavelength, fluence, power, irradiance, irradiation time, spot size, energy per point, schedule of irradiation, and total energy). The included studies were qualitatively analyzed, and descriptive analyses were performed. Also, summary results were evaluated for group comparison analysis. All included studies confirmed a decrease in the QoL of the patients that developed OM throughout the RT progress when compared to baseline. Of the informed cases, most of the patients who received PBMT showed grades 1 and 2 OM, while the control group showed more individuals with severe forms of OM (grades 3 and 4). In this sense, patients submitted to PBMT reported better QoL at the end of the treatment compared with the control group. PBMT used for the management of OM preserves the QoL of patients with head and neck cancer.

Abstract
Bones have an important role in the human body with their complex nature. Mesenchymal stem cells and endothelial cells together support their unique and complex nature. Photobiomodulation (PBM) is a promising method that provides cell proliferation, osteogenic differentiation, and bone regeneration. However, there are still unknowns in the mechanism of osteogenic differentiation induced by PBM. The main aim of the study is to understand the molecular mechanism of PBM at 655 and 808 nm of wavelengths and identify the most effective energy densities of both wavelengths for osteogenic differentiation. The effect of PBM on osteogenic differentiation of Human Bone Marrow Stem Cell (hBMSC) and Human Umbilical Vein Endothelial Cell (HUVEC) co-culture was examined at 1, 3, and 5 J/cm2 energy densities of red and near-infrared light through different analysis such as cell viability, scratch assay, intracellular reactive oxygen species production, and ATP synthesis, nitric oxide release, temperature monitoring, and osteogenic differentiation analyses. Even though all PBM-treated groups exhibited better results compared to the control group, 5 J/cm2 energy density induced faster cell proliferation and migration at both wavelengths. The increases in ATP and NO levels as signaling molecules, and the increases in DNA, ALPase, and calcium contents as osteogenic markers were higher in the groups treated with 5 J/cm2 energy density at both wavelengths. Only a slight change was obtained in the level of intracellular ROS after any light applications. It can be concluded that NO release has a very important role together with ATP production in PBM therapy to trigger DNA synthesis, ALPase activity, and mineralization for osteogenic differentiation of the hBMSC and HUVEC co-culture at 655 and 808 nm of wavelengths.

Abstract
Introduction: Despite a wide variety of clinical presentations in hereditary Mitochondrial Diseases, muscle fatigue is a common theme and impairs a patient's quality of life and ability to function. Current treatments are only supportive and include nutritional supplementation and physical therapy. Photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) using low-intensity, narrow spectrum light in the red/near infrared (NIR) range, from a low-level laser or light-emitting diode sources, enhances mitochondrial function in preclinical and clinical studies on a range of conditions. However, little research has been done on the effectiveness of photobiomodulation in hereditary mitochondrial disorders. Methods: We performed a scoping review of the evidence of the beneficial effects of photobiomodulation for treating the muscle-related symptoms of hereditary mitochondrial disease. Results: No studies regarding photobiomodulation in hereditary mitochondrial disease were identified. However, in other clinical conditions featuring acquired mitochondrial impairment, we identified studies that suggested improved function, although sample sizes were small in number and statistical power. Conclusion: There is emerging evidence of efficacy for PBMT for diseases involving acquired mitochondrial insufficiency. We identified no published research on PBMT in hereditary mitochondrial disease, but this review confirms a theoretical rationale for a positive effect and suggests further research.

Abstract
Objective: To systematically summarize the evidence for photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) in the prevention and treatment of oral mucositis (OM) in patients undergoing cancer treatment. An electronic search was conducted in 8 databases and grey literature. Background: PBMT is recommended for the management of OM resulting from cancer treatment, with several systematic reviews (SRs) being published in recent years on this topic. Methods: Only SRs with outcomes from clinical trials were included, with no language or year restriction. The AMSTAR 2 tool was used to assess the methodological quality of the SRs. Results: Five thousand eight hundred fifty-six references were found, and 16 were selected for this review. OM prevention and treatment were favorable for PBMT in most studies, with a significant reduction in OM severity. Most studies obtained moderate confidence. Conclusions: PBMT represents an effective strategy in the management of OM, and this evidence is supported by studies with acceptable methodological quality.

Abstract
Anticancer treatments induce vulvovaginal complications that alter the quality of life and sexuality of patients. New technologies, such as photobiomodulation, could address this problem, for which few effective therapeutic solutions exist. The objective of this study was to describe the characteristics of patients seeking treatment and to observe the effects of photobiomodulation. This is a prospective cohort of patients treated for cancer, in failure of first-line medical treatment, managed at the University Hospital of Nîmes. The history, symptoms and impact of the disorders on their quality of life were collected. At follow-up, improvement was assessed using the PGI-I and FSFI questionnaires. Twenty-eight patients were treated. They were all menopausal, half of them after anticancer treatments [chemotherapy (78%), radiotherapy (36%), hormone therapy (36%)]. The main symptom reported was vaginal dryness (72%). Seventy-one percent of patients (n=20) felt that their daily life was affected≥8/10. All patients had sexual dysfunction. Twenty-two patients received at least 6 sessions of photobiomodulation. Seventy-two percent (n=18) of patients felt better or much better after treatment (PGI-I≤2). The median improvement estimated by the patients was 65% (Q1=50%; Q3=72.5%). There was also a significant clinical improvement. No serious adverse events were reported. Due to the small number of patients in a heterogeneous population with no control group, we cannot extrapolate our results. However, the objective was to assess the status of these pathologies and the contribution of photobiomodulation in patients who have failed first-line treatment; and these results are encouraging.

Abstract
Introduction: Different kinds of treatments have been developed to fight cancers. Low-level laser therapy (LLLT), also known as photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT), is a low-power monochromatic and coherent light that has been used successfully for healing injuries and combating malignancies. However, there are concerns about the application of LLLT to cancers due to the increased proliferation of some cancer cells after LLLT. Methods: This study investigated the effects of 650 nm and 870 nm lasers on the proliferation of HT29 colorectal cancer cell lines in vitro and in vivo. Results: The results showed that the laser with a wavelength of 870 nm did not meaningfully alter the proliferation of cultured cells. However, cell proliferation was promoted when the laser was applied within a wavelength of 650 nm. Treatment of HT29-derived tumors in nude mice with the 650 nm laser resulted in the decline of the tumor progression rate compared to controls. This result was inconsistent with the proliferative effects of the laser on the cultured cells. Conclusion: Cell behavior in response to LLLT might be different between cell culture and xenograft models.

Abstract
Malocclusion is one of the three major diseases, the incidence of which could reach 56% of the imperiled oral and systemic health in the world today. Orthodontics is still the primary method to solve the problem. However, it is clear that many orthodontic complications are associated with courses of long-term therapy. Photobiomodulation (PBM) therapy could be used as a popular way to shorten the course of orthodontic treatment by nearly 26% to 40%. In this review, the efficacy in cells and animals, mechanisms, relevant cytokines and signaling, clinical trials and applications, and the future developments of PBM therapy in orthodontics were evaluated to demonstrate its validity. Simultaneously, based on orthodontic mechanisms and present findings, the mechanisms of acceleration of orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) caused by PBM therapy were explored in relation to four aspects, including blood vessels, inflammatory response, collagen and fibers, and mineralized tissues. Also, the cooperative effects and clinical translation of PBM therapy in orthodontics have been explored in a growing numbers of studies. Up to now, PBM therapy has been gaining popularity for its non-invasive nature, easy operation, and painless procedures. However, the validity and exact mechanism of PBM therapy as an adjuvant treatment in orthodontics have not been fully elucidated. Therefore, this review summarizes the efficacy of PBM therapy on the acceleration of OTM comprehensively from various aspects and was designed to provide an evidence-based platform for the research and development of light-related orthodontic tooth movement acceleration devices.

Abstract
Introduction Pain management becomes important in the treatment of oral mucosal diseases since it can impair the quality of life. Photobiomodulation (PBM) as an alternative therapy, has potency in reducing pain through several mechanisms targeting peripheral nerves in the target tissue. Purpose To discuss the effectiveness of PBM in the management of four cases of oral mucosal diseases. Case Four patients, two females and two males, with an age ranging from 24 to 63 years came to the Oral Medicine Department complaining of painful lesions in their oral cavity. Three cases showed ulceration of the oral mucosa and had been diagnosed with recurrent aphthous stomatitis, recalcitrant chronic ulcer, and non-specific chronic sialadenitis. One patient who complained of intense pain and swelling on the right side of the face was diagnosed with post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN). Case Management PBM was administered in all four cases (976 nm diode laser, three cases with spot size 0.01 cm2, fluency 10 J/cm2, and one case with spot size 0.5 cm2; fluency 3 J/cm2). Visual analog scale (VAS) control was performed before and after the PBM at each visit. The recorded VAS results show a reduction in pain that started at the post-laser time, with VAS before PBM ranging from 5 to 7 and after PBM ranging from 0 to 4. Three patients were given triamcinolone acetonide 0.1%, chlorhexidine gluconate 0.2% mouthwash, petroleum jelly, and multivitamins. One patient was given mefenamic acid and multivitamins. Conclusion PBM can be a useful adjunctive treatment to relieve the pain of oral mucosal diseases due to its ability to reduce pain intensity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This scoping review and analysis were designed to assess the amount of time spent delivering photobiomodulation (PBM) light therapy after dental extraction to improve postoperative pain and wound healing. TYPES OF STUDIES REVIEWED The scoping review was performed according to the Cochrane Collaboration and Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses criteria. Publications were specific for human randomized controlled clinical trials, PBM after dental extraction therapy, and related clinical outcomes. Online databases searched included PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Web of Science. Analyses were conducted to analyze the prescribed intervals of time (seconds) per application of PBM. RESULTS Of the 632 studies initially identified, 22 studies fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Postoperative pain and PBM were reported in 20 articles for 24 treatment groups, with treatment times ranging from 17 through 900 seconds and wavelengths from 550 through 1,064 nm. Clinical wound healing outcomes were reported in 6 articles for 7 groups with treatment times ranging from 30 through 120 seconds and wavelengths from 660 through 808 nm. PBM therapy was not associated with adverse events. CONCLUSIONS AND PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS There is future potential to integrate PBM after dental extraction therapy to improve postoperative pain and clinical wound healing. The amount of time spent delivering PBM will vary by wavelength and the type of device. Further investigation is needed to translate PBM therapy into human clinical care.

Abstract
Cancer resistance is a primary concern in cancer treatment, and developing an effective modality or strategy to improve therapeutic outcomes is imperative. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a treatment modality that targets the tumor with a photoactive molecule and light for the specific destruction of cancer cells. Photobiomodulation (PBM) is a light exposure of cells to energize their biomolecules to respond to therapy. In the present study, we used PBM to mediate and improve the anti-tumor efficacy of zinc phthalocyanine tetrasulfonic acid (ZnPcS4)-PDT on resistant MCF-7 breast cancer cells and explore molecular changes associated with cell death. Different laser irradiation models were used for PBM and PDT combination. The combined treatment demonstrated an additive effect on the viability and Annexin-V/PI-staining cell death assessed through MTT assay and mitochondrial release of cytochrome c. Rhodamine (Rh123) showed increased affinity to mitochondrial disruption of the strategic treatment with PBM and PDT. Results from the autophagy assay indicate an interplay between the mitochondrial and autophagic proteins. These findings were indicative that PBM might improve the anti-tumor of PDT by inducing autophagy in resistant MCF-7 breast cancer cells that evade apoptosis.

Abstract
Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is a relatively common pathology occurring in around 5% of patients taking bisphosphate and other antiresorptive or anti-angiogenic medications. Despite the efforts, as of today there is still no consensus on its management. In this case report, the successful management of stage II MRONJ was performed for an eighty-three-year-old female patient suffering from pain and alteration in her normal oral functions (swallowing and phonation). The treatment consisted of three sessions of photobiomodulation therapy (PBM), followed by minimal surgical intervention and three other sessions of PBM. PBM was applied on the sites of osteonecrosis with the follow parameters: 4 J/cm2; a power of 50 mW; 8 mm applicator diameter; a continuous contact mode. Irradiation was performed on three points, including the vestibular, occlusal and lingual parts of each of the bone exposure areas. Each point was irradiated for 40 s, and, in total, nine points were made per session, and nine sessions were conducted. To assess the pain, a visual analogue scale was used in which zero represented no pain at all and ten represented the greatest pain. At the first session and before any intervention, the patient stated that her pain was 8 out of 10. At the end of the treatment, a significant reduction in VAS was noted (2/10) and, clinically, a healing of the soft tissue in the previously exposed bone was observed. This case report suggests that the combination of PBM with surgical intervention is promising in the management of MRONJ.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate the role of photobiomodulation (PBM) in patients undergoing head and neck cancer (HNC) treatment. We focused on the consequences of the main complications, such as quality of life (QoL), analgesia, functional impairment, and nutritional status, as well as on the impact on survival/ recurrences, radiotherapy (RT) interruption, adherence, cost-effectiveness, safety, feasibility, and tolerability. METHODS An electronic search in PubMed and Scopus databases was performed. Full texts were carefully assessed, and data were assimilated into a tabular form for discussion and consensus among the expert panel. RESULTS A total of 22 papers were included. Overall, a beneficial effect of PBM was evidenced in the amelioration of QoL, nutritional status, the reduction of pain, and functional impairment. Preventive PBM may reduce the incidence and duration of RT interruptions, potentially contributing to improved cancer treatment outcomes. PBM treatments are safe and recommended for routine use, with the caveat of avoiding direct tumor exposures where feasible. However, it does not appear to impact cancer survivorship/recurrences directly. Despite additional clinical efforts involving routine PBM use, the individual and public health benefits will positively impact oncology care. CONCLUSIONS Quality of life, pain and functional impairment, nutritional status, and survival may be effectively improved with PBM. Given its established efficacy also in reducing RT interruptions and its safety, feasibility, and tolerability, PBM should be included in the field of supportive cancer care in HNC patients. Improved understanding of PBM mechanisms and precise dose parameters is enabling the generation of more robust, safe, and reproducible protocols; thus, it is imperative to support further clinical implementation as well as both applied and basic science research in this novel field.

Abstract
BACKGROUND High-energy irradiation eliminates cancer cells by destroying their genetic components. However, there are several side effects from doing this, such as fatigue, dermatitis, and hair loss, which remain obstacles to this treatment. Here, we propose a moderate method that uses low-energy white light from a light-emitting diode (LED) to selectively inhibit cancer cell proliferation without affecting normal cells. METHODS The association between LED irradiation and cancer cell growth arrest was evaluated based on cell proliferation, viability, and apoptotic activity. Immunofluorescence, polymerase chain reaction, and western blotting were performed in vitro and in vivo to identify the metabolism related to the inhibition of HeLa cell proliferation. RESULTS LED irradiation aggravated the defective p53 signaling pathway and induced cell growth arrest in cancer cells. Consequently, cancer cell apoptosis was induced by the increased DNA damage. Additionally, LED irradiation inhibited the proliferation of cancer cells by suppressing the MAPK pathway. Furthermore, the suppression of cancer growth by the regulation of p53 and MAPK was observed in cancer-bearing mice irradiated with LED. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that LED irradiation can suppress cancer cell activity and may contribute to preventing the proliferation of cancer cells after medical surgery without causing side effects.

Abstract
PURPOSE Approximately 95% of patients undergoing radiotherapy (RT) experience radiation dermatitis (RD). Evidence has suggested that photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) can stimulate skin renewal and minimize RD. The aim of the present paper was to investigate the efficacy of PBMT in RD prevention through a comprehensive literature review. METHODS A literature search of Ovid MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane databases was conducted from 1980 to March 2021 to identify RCT on the use of PBMT for RD prevention. Forest plots were developed using RevMan software to quantitatively compare data between studies. RESULTS Five papers were identified: four in breast and one in head and neck cancer patients. Patients receiving PBMT experienced less severe RD than the control groups after 40 Gray (Gy) of RT (grade 3 toxicity: Odds Ratio (OR): 0.57, 95% CI 0.14-2.22, p = 0.42) and at the end of RT (grade 0 + 1 vs. 2 + 3 toxicity: OR: 0.28, 95% CI 0.15-0.53, p < 0.0001). RT interruptions due to RD severity were more frequent in the control group (OR: 0.81, 95% CI 0.10-6.58, p = 0.85). CONCLUSION Preventive PBMT may be protective against the development of severe grades of RD and reduce the frequency of RT interruptions. Larger sample sizes and other cancer sites at-risk of RD should be evaluated in future studies to confirm the true efficacy of PBMT, also in preventing the onset of RD and to finalize a standardized protocol to optimize the technique. At present, starting PBMT when RT starts is recommendable, as well as performing 2 to 3 laser sessions weekly.

Abstract
Non-invasive laser irradiation can induce photobiomodulation (PBM) effects in cells and tissues, which can help reduce inflammation and pain in several clinical scenarios. The purpose of this study is to review the current literature to verify whether PBM can produce dose effects in anti-inflammatory experiments by summarizing the clinical and experimental effects of different laser parameters of several diseases. The so-called Arndt-Schulz curve is often used to describe two-phase dose reactions, assuming small doses of therapeutic stimulation, medium doses of inhibition, and large doses of killing. In the past decade, more and more attention has been paid to the clinical application of PBM, especially in the field of anti-inflammation, because it represents a non-invasive strategy with few contraindications. Although there are different types of lasers available, their use is adjusted by different parameters. In general, the parameters involved are wavelength, energy density, power output, and radiation time. However, due to the biphasic effect, the scientific and medical communities remain puzzled by the ways in which the application of PBM must be modified depending on its clinical application. This article will discuss these parameter adjustments and will then also briefly introduce two controversial theories of the molecular and cellular mechanisms of PBM. A better understanding of the extent of dualistic dose response in low-intensity laser therapy is necessary to optimize clinical treatment. It also allows us to explore the most dependable mechanism for PBM use and, ultimately, standardize treatment for patients with various diseases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The effects of laser therapy on normal cells are well known and accepted, but the impact of this therapy on malignant cells are not yet fully understood. This review aims to map and outline what the scientific literature addresses on the effects of laser therapy on malignant cells. METHODS This review article followed the guidelines of the PRISMA-ScR protocol, being all the search, analysis, and selection of articles based on it. RESULTS After all application of the predetermined criteria, five studies were included, dated between the years 2013 and 2021. With the complete reading of the selected studies, 100% of the articles were classified as category III of the Agency for Healthcare as Research and Quality classification. Similar themes among the papers included were investigated and compared. In these five studies, the visible red and near infrared wavelengths were used, and energy densities varied between 1 and 5 J/cm2 . It was observed that low-level laser could alter the expression of cell proliferation and migration proteins, such as cyclin D1, E-cadherin, and β-catenin. In addition, changes related to increased cell viability and metabolism were also identified. CONCLUSION The low-level laser seems to positively regulate the proliferative, migratory, and viability capacity of neoplastic cells, depending on the protocol used. All these studies included in the review are equivalent to in vitro studies; the cells are not in such a complex environment as is an organized tissue, making it necessary to carry out more complex tests, such as in vivo research.

Abstract
One of the novel strategies for bone tissue regeneration is photobiomodulation (PBM) which depends on the red and near-infrared light absorption by mitochondria and may trigger bone tissue regeneration via the production of intracellular ROS and ATP, NO release, etc. It is also important to identify the changes in those signal molecule levels in an in vivo mimicking platform such as 3-Dimensional (3D) Scaffold Free Microtissues (SFMs) that may serve more natural osteogenic differentiation responses to PBM. Herein, we aimed to increase the osteogenic differentiation capability of the co-culture of Human Bone Marrow Stem Cells (hBMSC) and Human Umbilical Vein Endothelial Cells (HUVECs) on 3D SFMs by triple light treatment at 655 and 808-nm of wavelengths with the energy densities of 1, 3, and 5 J/cm2. We performed the analysis of cell viability, diameter measurements of SFMs, intracellular ROS production, NO release, ATP activity, temperature measurements, DNA content, ALPase activity, calcium content, and relative gene expressions of ALP, Collagen, and Osteopontin by qRT-PCR. It was found that both wavelengths were effective in terms of the viability of SFMs. 1 and 5 J/cm2 energy densities of both wavelengths increased the SFM diameter with significant changes in intracellular ROS, ATP, and NO levels compared to the control group. We concluded that PBM therapy was successful to induce osteogenesis. 1 J/cm2 at 655 nm of wavelength and 5 J/cm2 at 808 nm of wavelength were the most effective energy densities for osteogenic differentiation on SFMs with triple light treatment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Our objective was to review the first 20 years of photobiomodulation (PBM) clinical studies for oral mucositis (OM) mitigation. STUDY DESIGN A scoping review screened controlled clinical studies. The PBM devices, protocols, and clinical outcomes were analyzed. RESULTS Seventy-five studies met the inclusion criteria. The first study dated from 1992, and the term "PBM" was first published in 2017. Public services, placebo-controlled randomized trials, and patients with head and neck chemoradiation were predominant among included studies. Prophylactic red intraoral laser protocols were mostly used. Comparing the outcomes of all protocols was unfeasible due to missing treatment parameters and nonhomogeneous measurements. CONCLUSIONS The main barrier to optimizing clinical protocols of PBM for OM was the lack of standardization in clinical studies. Although PBM use is now globally present in oncology settings and generally marked by good outcomes reported, additional randomized clinical trials with well-described methods are necessary.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to compare the historical incidence rate of severe oral mucositis (OM) in head and neck cancer patients undergoing definitive concurrent chemoradiation therapy (CRT) versus a prospective cohort of patients with locally advanced head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) treated with prophylactic photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT). METHODS This US-based, institutional, single-arm, phase Ⅱ prospective clinical trial was initiated in 50 patients (age ≥ 18 years, Karnofsky Performance Scale Index > 60, with locally advanced HNSCC (excluding oral cavity) receiving definitive or adjuvant radiation therapy (RT) with concurrent platinum-based chemotherapy (CT). PBMT was delivered three times per week throughout RT utilizing both an intraoral as well extraoral delivery system. Primary outcome measure was incidence of severe OM utilizing both the National Cancer Institute Common Toxicity Criteria, version 4.0 (NCI-CTCAE) Grade ≥3 and the World Health Organization Mucositis Grading Scale (WHO) Grade ≥3 versus historical controls; secondary outcome measures included time to onset of severe OM following therapy initiation. RESULTS At baseline, all patients included in final analysis (N = 47) had OM Grade 0. Average RT and CT dose was (66.3 ± 5.1) Gy and (486.1 ± 106.8) mg/m2, respectively. Severe OM was observed in 11 of 47 patients (23%, confidence interval: 12, 38). OM toxicity grade trended upward during treatment, reaching a maximum at 7 weeks (WHO: 1.8 vs. NCI-CTCAE: 1.7). Subsequently, OM grade returned to baseline 3 months following completion of RT. The mean time to onset of severe OM was (35 ± 12) days. The mean time to resolution of severe OM was (37 ± 37) days. CONCLUSIONS Compared to historical outcomes, PBMT aides in decreasing severe OM in patients with locally advanced HNSCC. PBMT represents a minimally invasive, prophylactic intervention to decrease OM as a major treatment-related side effect.

Abstract
This case series presents four cases of scapholunate interosseous ligament (SLIL) injury. We discuss the process of early recognition and highlight difficulties encountered in current diagnostic and conservative management strategies. The cases profile interdisciplinary management of four scapholunate (SL) injuries that have different clinical presentations and injury mechanisms. Three sport-related SL injuries were managed conservatively by a sport specialist chiropractor and one sport-related case was self-managed. Management strategies included early wrist immobilization, soft tissue manual therapy, low-level laser therapy, proprioceptive and strengthening exercises, and early orthopedic referral. This case series highlights: (1) the spectrum of SL injuries (2) the importance of early specialty referral, (3) the paucity of literature with respect to conservative management of these injuries and (4) the role of manual therapy and rehabilitation professionals as part of the healthcare team in detecting and helping manage these wrist injuries.

Abstract
In this retrospective study, data for three different laser-assisted approaches for the management of dentinal hypersensitivity (DH) was collected (n = 920 teeth). In total, 387 teeth were treated with photobiomodulation (PBM) therapy with 660 nm red light laser (PBM group), 327 were treated with the Nd:YAG laser (1064 nm) and 206 were treated with the Nd:YAP laser (1340 nm). To assess the effectiveness of each treatment, a visual analogue scale (VAS) was used, where zero represented no pain at all and ten represented the greatest pain. VAS was used before (T0), immediately after (T1), one week after (T2), four weeks after (T3), six months after (T4) and one year after treatment (T5). Means and standard deviations of VAS at different follow-up times were calculated. Values were compared within and between groups. Statistical significance was considered to be achieved when p-value was less than 0.05. Confidence level was proposed to be 99% with a P value lower than 0.001. Within groups, a statistically significant reduction was obtained when the mean value of VAS at T0 was compared with T5. At T5, the PBM group had the highest reduction of VAS (with mean value of 0), while the Nd:YAG and Nd:YAP groups had scores of 1.065 ± 0.674 and 4.665 ± 0.674, respectively. Conclusion: this retrospective study showed that PBM therapy and irradiation with Nd:YAG and Nd:YAP lasers are effective in managing DH pain. However, PBM therapy was the only procedure that showed complete pain relief at six and twelve months after treatment.

Abstract
This review article mapped and analyzed the most cited articles on the association of photobiomodulation (PBM) with oral mucositis (OM) and the evolution of clinical protocols in the area. A comprehensive search was performed on the Web of Science Core Collection (WoS-CC) database, leading to the extraction of information such as title, authors, abstract, journal name, number, average of citations, study design, year of publication, institutions, continents, countries, type of laser used, irradiated anatomical points, primary anti-cancer therapy, and laser parameters. Among those, clinical trials and literature reviews were the most common study designs. The main type of laser used was the InGaAlP diode, with a wavelength ranging from 630-660 nm, power going in 40-100 mW, and energy density ranging from 0.375-22 J/cm2. As for the anatomical sites irradiated by PBM, the cheek mucosa, upper and lower lips, lateral tongue, and bottom of the mouth stood out. This analysis highlights an increasing interest in PBM as a supportive treatment in cases of OM, as well as the evolution of the technique, types of laser devices, and protocols used.

Abstract
Objective: The present study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the application of photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) in the prevention of recurrent herpes labialis (RHL) through a randomized controlled clinical trial. Background data: RHL is a lifelong infection that effects patients' quality of life. In the literature PBMT has shown positive results preventing RHL, decreasing recurrences and severity of lesions. Despite the good results reported, there are still few controlled clinical studies published on the subject. Methods: For this study, 158 volunteers were recruited and were randomly divided into three study groups: Laser 1-1 J/point (L1J): n = 61, Laser 2-2 J/point (L2J): n = 50, and placebo-0 J/point: n = 47. The treatment consisted of a protocol of 15 sessions throughout 6 months and 2 years of follow-up posttreatment. Results: The results showed that L1J presented the most satisfactory results concerning the reduction of the number of lesions per year and less severity of recurrences in the long-term evaluation when compared with L2J. Both Laser Groups (L1J and L2J) were statistically more efficient than placebo in all aspects analyzed. All patients who received laser treatment (L1J and L2J) and presented recurrences had significant improvement in frequency and/or severity of lesions. No patient had side effects from treatment. Conclusions: PBMT can be effective in the reduction of the frequency of recurrences of RHL and in the severity of postirradiation lesions that may appear.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Radiation-associated soft tissue injury is a potentially devastating complication for head and neck cancer patients. The damage can range from minor sequelae such as xerostomia, which requires frequent daily maintenance, to destructive degenerative processes such as osteoradionecrosis, which can contribute to flap failure and delay or reverse oral rehabilitation. Despite the need for effective radioprotectants, the literature remains sparse, primarily focused on interventions beyond the surgeon's control, such as maintenance of good oral hygiene or modulation of radiation dose. METHODS This narrative review aggregates and explores noninvasive, systemic treatment modalities for prevention or amelioration of radiation-associated soft tissue injury. RESULTS We highlighted nine modalities with the most clinical potential, which include amifostine, melatonin, palifermin, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, photobiomodulation, pentoxifylline-tocopherol-clodronate, pravastatin, transforming growth factor-β modulators, and deferoxamine, and reviewed the benefits and limitations of each modality. Unfortunately, none of these modalities are supported by strong evidence for prophylaxis against radiation-associated soft tissue injury. CONCLUSION While we cannot endorse any of these nine modalities for immediate clinical use, they may prove fruitful areas for further investigation.

Abstract
The demand for aesthetic procedures is significantly increasing worldwide. In this case report, an in-office laser-assisted protocol coupled with rejuvenating concentrate serum (Gluage, TEBISKIN Gluage, SkinMed, Italy) was made. A 24-year-old female patient presented with a chief complaint of abundant facial acne and localized pigmentation. Clinical examination revealed the presence of abundant acne on the forehead and cheeks and the presence of localized pigmentation. Laser-assisted protocol coupled with rejuvenating concentrate serum was suggested. The protocol consisted of a thorough cleansing of the face followed by irradiation with a 980 nm diode laser (Smart M, Lasotronix, Poland), followed by a 405 nm diode laser (Smart M, Lasotronix, Poland), the application of rejuvenating concentrate serum (Gluage, TEBISKIN Gluage, SkinMed, Italy), and irradiation with the 635 nm diode laser (Smart M, Lasotronix, Poland). The protocol was made once per week for three weeks (three sessions in total), and a three-month follow-up was made after the end of the last session to confirm the effectiveness of the treatment. Stomatology 1 diode laser (Smart M, Lasotronix, Poland) was used in this case report as a 980 nm, 405 nm, and 635 nm diode laser (Smart M, Lasotronix, Poland). During the follow-up period, an almost total reduction of the acne was observed with the total disappearance of the localized pigmentation. This case report confirms the effectiveness of the proposed laser-assisted facial aesthetic treatment. We invite further studies to be made within the same suggested promising protocol.

DisclaimerThis article is based on recommendations from the 12th WALT Congress, Nice, October 3-6, 2018, and a follow-up review of the existing data and the clinical observations of an international multidisciplinary panel of clinicians and researchers with expertise in the area of supportive care in cancer and/or PBM clinical application and dosimetry. This article is informational in nature. As with all clinical materials, this paper should be used with a clear understanding that continued research and practice could result in new insights and recommendations. The review reflects the collective opinion and, as such, does not necessarily represent the opinion of any individual author. In no event shall the authors be liable for any decision made or action taken in reliance on the proposed protocols.ObjectiveThis position paper reviews the potential prophylactic and therapeutic effects of photobiomodulation (PBM) on side effects of cancer therapy, including chemotherapy (CT), radiation therapy (RT), and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT).BackgroundThere is a considerable body of evidence supporting the efficacy of PBM for preventing oral mucositis (OM) in patients undergoing RT for head and neck cancer (HNC), CT, or HSCT. This could enhance patients’ quality of life, adherence to the prescribed cancer therapy, and treatment outcomes while reducing the cost of cancer care.MethodsA literature review on PBM effectiveness and dosimetry considerations for managing certain complications of cancer therapy were conducted. A systematic review was conducted when numerous randomized controlled trials were available. Results were presented and discussed at an international consensus meeting at the World Association of photobiomoduLation Therapy (WALT) meeting in 2018 that included world expert oncologists, radiation oncologists, oral oncologists, and oral medicine professionals, physicists, engineers, and oncology researchers. The potential mechanism of action of PBM and evidence of PBM efficacy through reported outcomes for individual indications were assessed.ResultsThere is a large body of evidence demonstrating the efficacy of PBM for preventing OM in certain cancer patient populations, as recently outlined by the Multinational Association for Supportive Care in Cancer/International Society of Oral Oncology (MASCC/ISOO). Building on these, the WALT group outlines evidence and prescribed PBM treatment parameters for prophylactic and therapeutic use in supportive care for radiodermatitis, dysphagia, xerostomia, dysgeusia, trismus, mucosal and bone necrosis, lymphedema, hand-foot syndrome, alopecia, oral and dermatologic chronic graft-versus-host disease, voice/speech alterations, peripheral neuropathy, and late fibrosis amongst cancer survivors.ConclusionsThere is robust evidence for using PBM to prevent and treat a broad range of complications in cancer care. Specific clinical practice guidelines or evidence-based expert consensus recommendations are provided. These recommendations are aimed at improving the clinical utilization of PBM therapy in supportive cancer care and promoting research in this field. It is anticipated these guidelines will be revised periodically.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: One of the most debilitating side effects of chemotherapy is oral mucositis (OM). Photobiomodulation (PBM) demonstrates high efficacy in the management of OM. The aim of the study was to investigate the incidence of oral mucositis and evaluation of the effectiveness of PBM therapy. Materials and Methods: A total of 23 children diagnosed with leukaemia or lymphoma affected by chemotherapy-induced OM were enrolled in the study. OM grade was assessed with the World Health Organization (WHO) scale. Patients completed an approved questionnaire, and blood cell counts were read every 2 days. OM lesions were treated with class IV laser therapy with a frequency of every 48 h and density of 2, 4, 8, 16 or 30 J/cm2. The level of pain was measured with VAS scale. Results: The 23 patients developed a total of 41 OM episodes with a mean duration of 7.61 days ± 4.70. Laser therapy showed a great reduction regarding pain and a better function of patients even with neutropenia. Conclusions: Oral mucositis represents a significant burden to children. PBM brings positive aspects for patients; however, the optimal treatment parameters require further study.

Abstract
Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) has become an important part of the therapeutic process in various diseases. However, despite the broad use of LLLT in everyday clinical practice, the full impact of LLLT on cell life processes has not been fully understood. This paper presents the current state of knowledge concerning the mechanisms of action of LLLT on cells. A better understanding of the molecular processes occurring within the cell after laser irradiation may result in introducing numerous novel clinical applications of LLLT and potentially increases the safety profile of this therapy.

Abstract
Background Radiotherapy and chemotherapy are frequently employed in head and neck cancer (HNC) patients causing significant side effects that impair life quality and prognosis. Photobiomodulation (PBM) has become a growing approach to managing such oral complications. Despite its proven efficacy and absence of contraindications, there is still a lack of universally accepted disease-specific PBM protocols. Objective A narrative review was conducted to identify the current proposals relating to the use of PBM to treat complications of oncological treatments in HNC patients. Methods An electronic search in PubMed and Scopus databases was performed with the following keywords: (“photobiomodulation” OR “PBM” OR “laser therapy” OR “LLLT” OR “laser”) AND (“head and neck cancer” OR “oral cancer”) AND (“mucositis” OR “oral mucositis” OR “dysgeusia” OR “oedema” OR “xerostomia” OR “dermatitis” OR “trismus”) until October 2021. Results A total of 35 papers were included in the narrative review. Oral mucositis was the most studied complication, and advisable protocols are conceivable. Although there is a growing interest in PBM to manage of xerostomia, radiodermatitis, pain, and trismus, literature is still scarce to propose a universally feasible protocol. Conclusions PBM therapy could significantly prevent or reduce the severity of many side effects related to cancer therapies. More research is needed to obtain recommendations over the preferable parameters.

Abstract
The 5-year survival rate of non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is still low (<21%) despite recent improvements. Since conventional therapies have a lot of side effects, combined therapy is strongly recommended. Here, we report a patient with advanced NSCLC who received combined therapy, including ceritinib, photobiomodulation (PBM), ACGL (Antrodia cinnamomea (A. cinnamomea), and Ganoderma lucidum (G. lucidum)). Based on combined therapy, suitable doses of A. cinnamomea, G. lucidum, and PBM are important for tumor inhibition. This case report presents clinical evidence on the efficacy of combined therapy in advanced NSCLC patients, including computed tomography (CT) scan, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), and blood tests. The effective inhibition of human lung adenocarcinoma cells is demonstrated. Our case highlights important considerations for PBM and ACGL applications in NSCLC patients, the side effects of ceritinib, and long-term health maintenance.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In 2019, a viral and respiratory pathology called COVID-19 emerged in Wuhan, China, and spread to other continents. Its main symptoms include fever, cough, dyspnea, myalgia, anorexia and respiratory distress in the most severe cases, which can lead to death. Furthermore, manifestations in the oral cavity such as ageusia and dysgeusia, as well as lesions in other regions of the oral cavity, can be observed. MAIN BODY This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to critically assess the clinical evidence on the use of photobiomodulation (PBMT) and antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) for the treatment of oral lesions in patients infected with Sars-Cov-2. The literature extracted from electronic databases such as PubMed, Medline, CINAHL, and Google Scholar was screened for eligibility, and relevant articles were included. The review is limited to manuscripts published in English, Spanish and Portuguese language between December 2019 and October 2021. A total of 5 articles with 11 cases retracting PBMT and aPDT as therapeutic strategies for the regression of oral lesions and painful symptoms. The results show favoring the associated use of PBMT with aPDT (P = 0.004), and the isolated use of PBMT with the result of significant "P = 0.005" and good confidence interval (7.18, 39.20) in ulcerative lesions, herpetic, aphthous, erythematous, petechiae and necrotic areas. CONCLUSIONS PBMT and aPDT could be effective in the treatment of oral lesions of patients infected with Sars-Cov-2 in a short period of time; however, more long-term randomized clinical trials studies are needed to define the therapeutic strategy.

Abstract
In 2021, our group published a laboratory study on the impact of PBM on human gingival fibroblasts. The in vitro results confirmed the fact that the appropriately selected wavelength and properly selected parameters of the laser settings can increase cell proliferation, modulate inflammatory markers, and decrease the susceptibility of human gingival fibroblasts to apoptosis. Therefore, this case report was aimed at the clinical evaluation of the proposed settings and treatment regimen in a very difficult situation of an immunocompromised patient with extensive changes and stagnation of symptoms for many weeks. A 65-year-old man, during his oncological treatment, was diagnosed with oral mucositis grade 3 according to the World Health Organization and National Cancer Institute scales. Due to pain sensation, long-lasting and not healing oral lesions, and problems with solid food intake, he was qualified for laser photobiomodulation therapy. For the management of oral lesions, a diode laser 635 nm (SmartMPro, Lasotronix, Poland) was intraorally applied at an energy density of 4 J/cm2, the 20 s of irradiation, the output power of 100 mW, and in continuous wave mode. Seven treatment procedures were performed two times a week using the spot technique in contact and non-contact mode. Within 21 days of monotherapy, all ailments disappeared. The patient was also able to reuse dental dentures and return to a solid diet. The obtained results confirm the efficiency of at least 3 PBM protocols. Our case shows that the use of PMB therapy contributes to faster healing of painful oral lesions in oncological patients, and thus the treatment time and return to the appropriate quality of life is shorter.

Abstract
Unclear optical parameters make photo-biomodulation (PBM) difficult to implement in diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) clinically. Here, 12 wavelengths (400-900 nm) were used to conduct PBM to heal DFU wounds in vitro and in vivo. PBM at 10 mW/cm2 and 0.5-4 J/cm2 with all 12 wavelengths promoted proliferation of diabetic wound cells. In a mimic DFU (mDFU) rat model, PBM (425, 630, 730, and 850 nm, and a combination light strategy) promoted mDFU healing. The positive cell proliferation, re-epithelialization, angiogenesis, collagen synthesis, and inflammation were possible mechanisms. The combination strategy had the best effect, which can be applied clinically.

Abstract
Neuropathic pain (NP) can be challenging to treat effectively as analgesic pharmacotherapy (MED) can reduce pain, but the majority of patients do not experience complete pain relief. Our pilot approach is to assess the feasibility and efficacy of an evidence-based photobiomodulation (PBM) intervention protocol. This would be as an alternative to paralleled standard analgesic MED for modulating NP intensity-related physical function and quality of life (QoL) prospectively in a mixed neurological primary burning mouth syndrome and oral iatrogenic neuropathy study population (n = 28). The study group assignments and outcome evaluation strategy/location depended on the individual patient preferences and convenience rather than on randomisation. Our prospective parallel study aimed to evaluate the possible pre/post-benefit of PBM and to allow for a first qualitative comparison with MED, various patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) based on Initiative on Methods, Measurement, and Pain Assessment in Clinical Trials (IMMPACT-II) were used for up to a nine-month follow-up period in both intervention groups (PBM and MED). The PBM protocol applied to the PBM group was as follows: λ810 nm, 200 mW, 0.088 cm2, 30 s/point, 9 trigger and affected points, twice a week for five consecutive weeks, whereas the MED protocol followed the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidelines. Our results showed that despite the severe and persistent nature of the symptoms of 57.50 ± 47.93 months at baseline in the PBM group, a notably rapid reduction in PISmax on VAS from 7.6 at baseline (T0) to 3.9 at one-month post-treatment (T3) could be achieved. On the other hand, mean PISmax was only reduced from 8.2 at baseline to 6.8 at T3 in the MED group. Our positive PBM findings furthermore support more patients' benefits in improving QoL and functional activities, which were considerably impaired by NP such as: eating, drinking and tasting, whereas the analgesic medication regimens did not. No adverse events were observed in both groups. To the best knowledge of the authors, our study is the first to investigate PBM efficacy as a monotherapy compared to the gold standard analgesic pharmacotherapy. Our positive data proves statistically significant improvements in patient self-reported NP, functionality, psychological profile and QoL at mid- and end-treatment, as well as throughout the follow-up time points (one, three, six and nine months) and sustained up to nine months in the PBM group, compared to the MED group. Our study, for the first time, proves the efficacy and safety of PBM as a potent analgesic in oral NP and as a valid alternative to the gold standard pharmacotherapy approach. Furthermore, we observed long-term pain relief and functional benefits that indicate that PBM modulates NP pathology in a pro-regenerative manner, presumably via antioxidant mechanisms.

Abstract
Introduction: Oral mucositis (OM) is a common side effect of radiotherapy (RT) or radio-chemotherapy (RT/CT) for head and neck cancers. It causes lesions leading to impairment of the quality of life, dysphagia, pain, and in up to 20% of cases, a dosimetry concession, decreasing local tumor control, thereby impacting the survival rate. Positive results of photobiomodulation (PBM) to treat it have been reported in the literature. PBM has multiple parameters (type of laser, emission mode, number of sessions to be performed, wavelength, power, energy, fluence, exposure time, number of points) making it difficult to implement in clinical practice. Materials and methods: A literature search strategy was applied in Medline by selecting articles published between 2010 and 2020 to answer the following research question: “In patients treated with RT or RT/CT, what is the place of PBM in the management of OM?”, in accordance with PICO (patient, intervention, comparison and outcomes) criteria. The inclusion criteria were all original articles (clinical cases and clinical studies) which answered the research question. Meta-analyses, systematic reviews of the literature and journals, animal or in vitro studies, studies published in a language other than French or English, and full-text articles not accessible via inter-university credits were excluded. Results: Seventeen articles were included, representing 1576 patients. The PBM was intraoral in 16 papers and combined intra- and extra-oral emission in 1 paper. InGaAlP diode laser and HeNe laser significantly reduced OM compared with placebo in 62.5% and 75% of the studies, respectively. Pain reduction was poorly or not documented and when it was, it did not correlate with the reduction of analgesics. Temporary or permanent interruption of radiotherapy was also poorly documented. Discussion: The MASCC/ISOO (2019) report is an important step forward to establish a reproducible protocol for PBM, which as our results show, is heterogeneous in use. Our results showed that the studies started PBM on the first day of RT, using a wavelength of 660 nm for diode laser and 632.8 nm for HeNe laser. However, there is no scientific evidence vis-à-vis the values for power, energy, fluence, exposure time, or number of points. Although PBM appears to be effective in reducing OM scores, its effectiveness on improving patient quality of life, pain, painkiller consumption, compliance with treatment and the occurrence of complications remains to be defined. The relationship between PBM and survival rate was not an objective of this work. We found that of the 17 articles, 15 stated that they did not illuminate the tumor site during PBM sessions. Conclusion: The main objective of this work was to determine the place of PBM in the treatment of OM. Overall, the results on OM scores were favorable in almost ¾ of the studies. Despite its efficacy, the questions of the adjustment of the parameters of PBM, the harmonization on OM scale and its safety on carcinologic recurrence remain to be studied. In view of the lack of comparability of studies and the lack of reported data, studies that harmonize endpoints and follow-up criteria are needed to establish a standard protocol.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of photobiomodulation (PBM) therapy for the prevention of chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) in breast cancer patients. METHODS A prospective, randomized placebo-controlled pilot trial (NEUROLASER) was set up with 32 breast cancer patients who underwent chemotherapy (ClinicalTrials.gov; NCT03391271). Patients were randomized to receive PBM (n = 16) or placebo treatments (n = 16) (2 × /week) during their chemotherapy. The modified Total Neuropathy Score (mTNS), six-minute walk test (6MWT), Numeric pain Rating Scale (NRS), and Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy/Gynecologic Oncology Group Taxane (FACT/GOG-Taxane) were used to evaluate the severity of CIPN and the patients' quality of life (QoL). Outcome measures were collected at the first chemotherapy session, 6 weeks after initiation of chemotherapy, at the final chemotherapy session, and 3 weeks after the end of chemotherapy (follow-up). RESULTS The mTNS score increased significantly over time in both the control and the PBM group. A significantly higher score for FACT/GOG-Taxane was observed in the PBM group during chemotherapy compared to the control group. Questions of the FACT/GOG-Taxane related to sensory peripheral neuropathy symptoms showed a significant increase in severeness over time in the control group, whereas they remained constant in the PBM group. At follow-up, a (borderline) significant difference was observed between both groups for the 6MWT and patients' pain level, in benefit of the PBM group. CONCLUSIONS This NEUROLASER trial shows promising results concerning the prevention of CIPN with PBM in breast cancer patients. Furthermore, a better QoL was observed when treated with PBM.

Abstract
Despite its significant negative impact on the quality of life, the methods for the management of the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) injury are still limited. In this case report, the patient did not show any improvement from the day of the iatrogenic accident until 6 months. A significant improvement of the symptoms started to appear only at 6 months when PBMT was applied. A total of 42 sessions of PBMT took place. The application zone included intraoral and extraoral areas. The parameters were: Delivery power of 0.1 W, for 40 s, continuous wave (CW), contact mode, and delivered energy of 4 J. The delivered energy density related to the fiber diameter was 1415 J/cm2. Each treated point was considered to be 1 cm2 of diameter. At the end of the treatment, all of the symptoms disappeared except for an abnormal sensation on touching the mucosa and gingiva of the concerned area. No side effects were noted. This case report shows that PBMT can be a very promising approach for the management of severe cases that are not improving with conventional methods.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the effectiveness of photobiomodulation (PBMT) in preventing dysgeusia in breast cancer patients treated with doxorubicin-cyclophosphamide (AC). METHODS This is a phase II, randomized, triple-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial involving 112 breast cancer patients treated with AC. The patients were divided equally into two groups: a test group treated with 2 J red laser and 3 J infrared laser on 21 points that were symmetrically distributed on the tongue on day 0 of four cycles of AC, and an equal placebo group treated with simulated PBMT to blind the patient, evaluator, and statistician. The clinicopathological and sociodemographic data, results of taste test, and subjective taste analysis, and the QoL, ECOG performance status, body mass index, and other side effects were recorded. The data were analyzed using ANOVA-RM/Bonferroni, Friedman/Dunn, and chi-square/Fisher's exact tests. RESULTS PBMT patients showed less objective and subjective taste loss (p<0.05). On the other hand, the placebo group showed a higher ECOG status (p=0.037) and more significant weight loss (p<0.001) after four cycles of AC. The QoL was significantly higher in the PBMT group (p<0.05) at all assessment periods, and PBMT treatment also reduced the incidence of cachexia (p=0.020), anorexia (p<0.001), diarrhea (p=0.040), oral mucositis (p=0.020), and vomiting (p=0.008). CONCLUSION PBMT reduced the taste loss and improved the overall health status and QoL of patients with breast cancer treated with AC.
