Abstract
This study aimed to determine which performance assessment tools included in Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) are the most sensitive for the functional approach in the initial evaluation and during the therapy of old adults diagnosed with Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma (DLBCL). We prospectively recruited 31 patients aged 70 years or older presenting for an initial consultation in the Hematology Clinic of a tertiary hospital. We implemented an updated physical performance evaluation as part of CGA at baseline and during treatment. Baseline characteristics of the sample were compared according to age, Geriatric 8 (G8), frailty, Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB), and sarcopenia measured by hand grip strength (HGS). Functional changes were monitored during the treatment period using HGS, gait speed (GS) and SPPB. The mean age was 79.0 (5.5) years and 51.6% of the sample was frail; 65,5% were treated with standard chemotherapy and 35,5% with a therapeutic regimen with attenuated doses. All the assessment tools included in CGA found functional differences at baseline when the sample was stratified and compared according to frailty, sarcopenia, and SPPB, but not according to G8 score and age. Only SPPB was able to detect functional differences between groups stratified by age at baseline. GS was the only score that identified clinically significant functional changes during the treatment. In conclusion, HGS and SPPB are appropriate performance scores to complete the functional approach in the initial hematologic evaluation, and GS is a promising option to detect functional decline during therapy in old adults with DLBCL.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We compared the effects of resistance exercise (REx) and resistance exercise combined with neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES+REx) on muscle strength, functional lower extremity strength, and mobility in hematological cancer patients during chemotherapy. METHODS Forty-three adult patients were recruited and randomized into the REx group versus personalized and progressive NMES+REx. The lower extremity muscle strength (digital hand dynamometer) test and functional and mobility tests [30-s sit-to-stand test, Timed Up and Go test (TUG)] were performed pre-and postintervention. RESULTS The Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group-Performance Score (ECOG-PS) of 90% of all patients was ≥2. Increases in steroid dose after transplantation were associated with decreases in hip flexion and knee extension muscle strength values (respectively; rs:-0.468, p:0.008; rs:-0.527, p: 0.002). There was a significant improvement in strength measurement, functional and mobility tests, and ECOG-PS in both groups (p<0.05). The NMES+REx group had significantly higher hip flexion and knee extension values than the REx group (respectively; p=0.001; p=0.048). CONCLUSION REx training given to hematological cancer patients receiving intensive chemotherapy after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation improved muscle weakness. The combination of NMES training with resistance exercises resulted in significant results comparable to REx training alone in adult hematological patients with moderate-low ECOG-PS.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE/BACKGROUND Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is a treatment for benign and malignant hematological diseases. These aggressive treatments cause reduced levels of physical activity, decreased lung function, and worse quality of life. Alterations in pulmonary function tests before HSCT are associated with the risk of respiratory failure and early mortality. The objective of this study was to evaluate functional capacity and lung function before and after HSCT and identify the predictors of mortality after 2 years. METHODS A prospective cohort study was carried out with individuals with oncohematological diseases. The evaluations were carried out in two moments during hospitalization and at hospital discharge. Follow-up was carried out after 48 months. Assessments were carried out on 34 adults, using spirometry, manovacuometry, 6-Minute Walk Test (6MWT), Handgrip Strength Test, and 30-Second Chair Stand Test (30-s CST). RESULTS There was a statistically significant reduction for the variables in forced vital capacity, forced expiratory volume predicted in the 1st second, Tiffeneau index, handgrip strength, and distance covered (% predicted) on the 6MWT (p < .05). There was a significant difference in the 30-s CST when individuals were compared according to the type of transplant. We found that a 10% reduction in the values of maximum inspiratory pressure (MIP) can predict an increased risk for mortality. CONCLUSIONS Individuals undergoing HSCT have reduced functional capacity, lung function, and muscle strength during the hospitalization phase. Reduction in the values of MIP increases the risk of nonrelapse mortality.

Abstract
PURPOSE Amino acids are involved in many physiological processes in the body and serve as building blocks of proteins which are the main component of muscle mass. Often patients with cancer experience muscle wasting, which is associated with poor outcomes. The purpose of this paper is to discuss amino acid kinetics in cancer, review the evidence on the response to nutrition in patients with cancer, and to give recommendations on the appropriate level of amino acid or protein intake in cancer. Current evidence shows that amino acid kinetics in patients with cancer are disturbed, as reflected by increased and decreased levels of plasma amino acids, an increased whole body turnover of protein and muscle protein breakdown. A few studies show beneficial effects of acute and short-term supplementation of high protein meals or essential amino acid mixtures on muscle protein synthesis. CONCLUSIONS Cancer is associated with disturbances in amino acid kinetics. A high protein intake or supplementation of amino acids may improve muscle protein synthesis. Future research needs to identify the optimal level and amino acid mixtures for patients with cancer, in particular for those who are malnourished.

Abstract
PURPOSE We aimed to investigate the relationship between Borg scale and intensity of resistance training in patients who had undergone allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT). Furthermore, the relationship between Borg scale, heart rate (HR), and intensity of exercise tolerance test was also studied. METHODS The study included 28 patients (19 men and 9 women) who had undergone allo-HSCT between June 2015 and February 2017. Their knee extension strengths and exercise tolerances were evaluated. Patients were asked to grade between 0 and 10 on Borg scale based on the level of difficulty experienced during exercising, after 10 repetitions in randomized 20, 40, and 60% resistance training for knee extension. Additionally, we evaluated Borg scale, HR, and load intensity during exercise tolerance test, every minute of the exercise for 2 weeks before and 3 weeks after HSCT. RESULTS Knee extension strength and exercise tolerance were significantly decreased 3 weeks after HSCT from those before HSCT (p < 0.01). Additionally, rise in Borg scale with increase in load intensity during knee extension resistance training, both before and after HSCT (p < 0.01), was noted. Furthermore, Borg scale was found to be associated with HR and load intensity during exercise tolerance test in patients both before and after HSCT (p < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS A correlation was found between Borg scale with intensity of resistance training and exercise tolerance in patients who had undergone allo-HSCT. Therefore, Borg scale could be useful to determine the intensity of physical exercise in patients who have undergone allo-HSCT.
