Abstract
Zonulin is a physiological modulator of intercellular tight junctions, which upregulation is involved in several diseases like celiac disease (CeD). The polyQ gliadin fragment binds to the CXCR3 chemokine receptor that activates zonulin upregulation, leading to increased intestinal permeability in humans. Here, we report a general hypothesis based on the structural connection between the polyQ sequence of the immunogenic CeD protein, gliadin, and enteric coccidian parasites proteins. Firstly, a novel interaction pathway between the parasites and the host is described based on the structural similarities between polyQ gliadin fragments and the parasite proteins. Secondly, a potential connection between coccidial infections as a novel environmental trigger of CeD is hypothesized. Therefore, this report represents a promising breakthrough for coccidian research and points out the potential role of coccidian parasites as a novel trigger of CeD that might define a preventive strategy for gluten-related disorders in general. Abstract

Abstract
Abstract
Endoparasites have the potential to cause significant health problems in humans and other animals. Consequently, particularly the endoparasites of a zoonotic nature are of great interest to health authorities and scientists. This study investigated the prevalence of different intestinal parasite species of carnivores kept in captivity. Altogether 36 pooled samples of faeces obtained from individual animal enclosures from the Neunkircher Zoo and Wolfspark Werner Freund in Germany were examined. The samples were analysed by means of a flotation concentration method with the use of Faust and Kozák-Mágrová solution. Out of a total of 36 samples, 19 were positive for endoparasites (52.78 %). Furthermore, 13 out of 19 positive samples were protozoans (68.42 %).

Abstract
Epidemiology and molecular characterization of Eimeria was carried in goats reared under semi-arid region of west Uttar Pradesh, India. A total of 1285 faecal samples from different goat breeds (Jamunapari, Jakhrana and Barbari) were examined for presence of Eimerian oocysts over a period of eight months along with faecal oocysts count. All raw data of faecal oocyst counts (FOC) were transformed by loge (OPG+ 100) before analysis. All fixed effects like breed, age, months of sample collections along with their interaction were considered in analysis. The overall prevalence of Eimeria infection in goats was 73.85%. Breed wise prevalence in Barbari, Jamunapari and Jakhrana breed was 68.62, 79.70 and 72% respectively. Prevalence observed in 2-6M, 6-12M and >12M was as 70.83, 79.88 and 71.74% respectively. Gender wise prevalence as observed in male and female goats was 71.95 and 74.43% respectively. In oocyst per gram (OPG) data analysis the fixed effects like breed, age, months of sample collection and age versus gender interaction had significant effect on log transformed faecal oocysts counts (LFOC). The overall least square means of OPG was 4.673±0.007 (1403OPG). Of the three goat breeds, Jamunapari had highest OPG (2886OPG) compared to Jakhrana (875OPG) and Barbari (523OPG). Mean OPG in 2-6month age goats was significantly higher than the corresponding values in 6-12 and >12months, significant variation was found among monthly OPG means and wet months showed higher faecal oocysts discharge. Nine Eimeria species were identified infecting goats and E. arloingi and E. ninakohlyakimovae were most frequent and predominant species. Molecular characterization for coccidial infection was conducted using two genes i.e. 18S rDNA and ITS-1 genes which amplified 637bp and <500bp (E. ninakohlyakimovae) and >500bp (E. christenseni and E. alijevi) respectively. The ITS1 gene was analysed by sequencing, E. christenseni was found showing nucleotide similarity with E. bovis and E. ellipsoidalis whereas 3' end of the sequence were highly conserved. The ITS1 gene of E. ninakohlyakimovae was found more homologous to E. bovis, E. ellipsoidalis and E. zuernii but for 33rd nucleotide thymidine residue deletion and 5th position G→A mutation. The 18S rDNA sequences of E. ninakohlyakimovae and E. christenseni were studied for evolutionary divergence analysis and maximum divergence was noticed between E. ninakohlyakimovae and E. christenseni (0.0605). The phylogenetic tree showed E. ninakohlyakimovae was placed in same clade with other Eimeria spp. compared, but E. christenseni being placed in a different clade as an out-group.

Abstract
The present study was designed to assess the dynamic patterns of pro-inflammatory cytokines, including IFN-γ, TNF-α, IL-4, IL-6, acute phase protein (α1-acid-glycoprotein, AGP), and an inflammation associated factor (adenosine deaminase; ADA) following experimental caprine coccidiosis. Ten kids aging from 2 to 4 months were infected orally with 5×104 sporulated oocysts and 10 animals served as controls. Blood samples were collected in both groups before infection and at days 3, 7, 14, 21, 28, and 35 post-infection (PI), and the levels of above-mentioned factors were measured. IFN-γ, TNF-α, IL-4, IL-6, AGP, and ADA activities were significantly higher in infected animals from day 7 PI (P<0.05). In conclusion, the circulatory levels of most systemic inflammatory markers, including pro-inflammatory cytokines (IFN-γ, TNF-α, IL-4, IL-6), AGP, and ADA increased significantly starting from day 3 to day 7 PI in caprine coccidiosis.

Abstract
Coccidiosis is an economically disease that caused by Eimeria spp. Small and large intestines are target tissues of this protozoan parasite. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of coccidial infection and pathology of coccidiosis of goats in Kerman, southeastern Iran, from February 2010 to July 2011. Faecal samples (approximately 3-5 g) were obtained from the rectum of 208 goats. The samples were determined microscopically for the presence of oocysts. Eimeria species were identified following sporulation of faeces in a thin layer of 2.5 % potassium dichromate for one or 2 weeks at 27 °C. Results showed the presence of multiple species in 187 out of 208 analyzed samples (89.91 %). Nine different Eimeria species were identified: E. arloingi (68.26 %), E. christenseni (50.9 %), E. ninakohlyakimovae (41.8 %), E. caprina (31.7 %), E. alijevi (29.8 %), E. jolchijevi (26.92 %), E. apsheronica (22.59 %), E. hirci (11.05 %), and E. pallida (5.2 %). Goats were considered in three age groups (less than 2 years old, 2-3 years old and over 3 years old). Obtained data indicated that coccidiosis was relatively common among the goats in this area. The highest rate of oocyte counts were observed in goats over 3 years old and females were more affected than male. The sex and age of the goat had not significant effects on the prevalence of coccidiosis, as well. There was no significant difference in oocyte per gram during different months. Coccidial lesions occurred in the jejunum and ileum more than other parts of intestine. Grossly, the affected tissues revealed non-pedunculated whitish nodules. Histopathologically, these nodules were characterized as proliferative enteritis with presence of different stages of the Eimeria in the hyperplastic epithelium and mild inflammatory reaction. Parasitological, gross and microscopic examinations revealed Eimeria infection was common in goats of Kerman, southeastern Iran.

Abstract
Among the 16 species of Eimeria from goats, Eimeria arloingi and Eimeria ninakohlyakimovae are regarded as the most pathogenic species in the world and cause clinical caprine coccidiosis. E. arloingi is known to be an important cause of coccidiosis in Iranian kids. Molecular analyses of two portions of nuclear ribosomal DNA (internal transcribed spacer1 (ITS1) and 18S rDNA) were used for the genetic characterization of the E. arloingi. Comparison of the sequencing data of E. arloingi obtained in the present study (ITS1: KC507793 and 18S rDNA: KC507792) with other Eimeria species in the GenBank database revealed a particularly close relationship between E. arloingi and Eimeria spp. from the cattle and sheep. The phylogram based on the ITS1 sequences shows that the E. arloingi, Eimeria bovis, and Eimeria zuernii formed a distinct group separate from the other remaining Eimeria spp. in cattle and poultry. In pairwise alignment, 18S rDNA sequence derived from E. arloingi showed 99% similarity to Eimeria ahsata with differences observed at only three nucleotides. This study showed that the ITS1 and 18S rDNA gene are useful genetic markers for the specific identification and differentiation of Eimeria spp. in ruminants.

Abstract
In order to provide information on hematological and biochemical changes in Eimeria arloingi infection, eighteen newborn kids were allocated to three equal groups. Two groups, A and B were inoculated with a single dose of 1 × 10(3) and 1 × 10(5) sporulated oocysts of E. arloingi, respectively. The third group C remained uninfected as control. Blood samples were collected from jugular vein before inoculation as control and at 7, 14, 21, 28, 35 and 42 days post inoculation (DPI). Total erythrocyte and total leukocyte counts, hemoglobin (Hb), packed cell volume (PCV) and differential leukocyte counts were determined. Serum biochemical parameters including total protein (TP), albumin, chloride (Cl(-)), sodium (Na(+)), potassium (K(+)), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and gamma glutamyltransferase (GGT) were measured. All infected animals showed symptoms of clinical coccidiosis including diarrhea and oocyst excretion after the prepatent period that varied from 16 to 18 days after inoculation. The oocysts output did not stop until the end of the experiment. The diarrhea was associated with a reduction in ALP activity, increases in PCV and Hb and decreases in Na(+), Cl(-) and K(+). No significant differences were found in AST, ALT, GGT, albumin and TP during 42 DPI. There was no hepatic damage.

Abstract
The progressive morphohistopathologic changes, distribution pattern of lesions and ultrastructural characteristics in Eimeria arloingi infection were investigated in experimentally infected kids. The 18 newborn animals allocated to 3 equal groups. Two of groups, A, B were inoculated with a single dose of 1 × 10(3) and1 × 10(5) sporulated oocysts of E. arloingi, respectively. At 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, and 42 days postinoculation (DPI), 1 kid from each group was necropsied for pathologic and ultrastructural studies. Progressive lesions were present at 21, 28, 35 and 42 DPI in the jejunum, ileum, cecum with fewer in the duodenum and proximal colon. The oocysts shedding begin between 16 to 18 DPI. Grossly, minimal changes were observed at 21 DPI as few whitish plaques or nodules and advanced lesions at 42 DPI as pseudoadenomatous pattern in the mucosa and a cerebriform pattern on the serosal surface of jejunum and ileum. Early histopathologic lesions due to schizogony phase were including presence of intracytoplasmic developmental stages of the parasite such as trophozoites, immature to mature schizonts and mild infiltration of inflammatory cells. In late lesions due to various stages of gametogony, the histological pattern was mainly remarkable hyperplasia of the villi and crypts epithelial cells, eventually developed into papillary projections of reactive epithelium. The mesenteric lymph nodes showed a few numbers of large schizonts in the cortical lacteals. This study showed E. arloingi as a highly pathogenic species for kids, the incubation period was 16-18 days and the main target organ was jejunum with characteristic morphohistopathologic lesions.
