Abstract
Ivermectin (IVM) resistance in parasitic nematodes such as Haemonchus contortus has spurred a search for substances that help to recover its efficacy. One potential agent is the natural product curcumin (CUR). In this study, CUR was combined with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) (CUR/PVP) to improve its solubility and biological applicability. This study determined the effect of CUR preincubation on the effective concentration 50% (EC50) of IVM in three H. contortus isolates with different susceptibilities to IVM. The IVM EC50 was determined for three H. contortus isolates with different IVM susceptibilities using the larval migration inhibition (LMI) test. The three isolates were (i) PARAISO (IVM resistant), (ii) FMVZ-UADY (IVM susceptible), and (iii) CENID-SAI INIFAP (reference IVM susceptible). The L3 of each isolate were preincubated for 3 h with one of three concentrations of CUR (μg curcumin/mL): CONC-1 (3.67), CONC-2 (5.67), or CONC-3 (8.48). Corresponding controls were performed without CUR. The EC50 of IVM was determined for each isolate after they were exposed to the different CUR concentrations. The EC50 of IVM differed between the isolates PARAISO > FMVZ-UADY > CENID-SAI INIFAP (P < 0.05). The CUR preincubation at CONC-1 did not decrease the EC50 of IVM for any of the three isolates, suggesting a hormetic effect. By contrast, CUR preincubation at CONC-2 or CONC-3 decreased the IVM EC50 for the PARAISO isolate (P < 0.05) compared with the reference isolate and reduced the EC50 of IVM for the FMVZ-UADY and CENID-SAI INIFAP isolates below the EC50 for the CENID-SAI INIFAP isolate without CUR preincubation. In conclusion, preincubation of H. contortus L3 with CUR reduced the EC50 of IVM for field isolates classified as resistant and susceptible to IVM. The CUR preincubation reduced the IVM resistance factor in the different isolates tested.

Abstract
The selection of components within a formulation or for treatment must stop being arbitrary and must be focused on scientific evidence that supports the inclusion of each one. Therefore, the objective of the present study was to obtain a formulation based on ascorbic acid (AA) and Eudragit FS 30D microparticles containing curcumin-boric acid (CUR-BA) considering interaction studies between the active components carried out via Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) to minimize antagonistic effects, and comprehensively and effectively treat turkey poults infected with Salmonella enteritidis (S. enteritidis). The DSC and FTIR studies clearly demonstrated the interactions between AA, BA, and CUR. Consequently, the combination of AA with CUR and/or BA should be avoided, but not CUR and BA. Furthermore, the Eudragit FS 30D microparticles containing CUR-BA (SD CUR-BA MP) showed a limited release of CUR-BA in an acidic medium, but they were released at a pH 6.8-7.0, which reduced the interactions between CUR-BA and AA. Finally, in the S. enteritidis infection model, turkey poults treated with the combination of AA and SD CUR-BA MP presented lower counts of S. enteritidis in cecal tonsils after 10 days of treatment. These results pointed out that the use of an adequate combination of AA and CUR-BA as an integral treatment of S. enteritidis infections could be a viable option to replace the indiscriminate use of antibiotics.

Abstract
The use of the USP IV apparatus (flow-through cell) has gained acceptance in recent years due to its versatility and ability to discriminate due to its hydrodynamic conditions. Therefore, the objective of the present study was to develop a discriminative dissolution method in the USP IV apparatus using the open-loop configuration, as well as to propose a method to compare non-cumulative dissolution profiles obtained in the open-loop configuration considering kinetic parameters and validate its predictive power through its comparison with independent and dependent methods using five commercial immediate-release tablet drugs (one reference drug and four generic drugs) of metoprolol tartrate as a model drug. The comparison of the non-accumulated dissolution profiles consisted of determining the geometric ratio of Cmax, AUC0∞, AUC0Cmax, and Tmax (kinetic parameters) of the generic/reference drugs, whereby generic drugs "C" and "D" presented the highest probability of similarity since their 90% confidence intervals were included, or they were very close to the acceptance interval (80.00-125.00%). These results were consistent with the f2, bootstrap f2, and dissolution efficiency approaches (independent models). In conclusion, the proposed comparison method can be an important tool to establish similarity in dissolution profiles and to facilitate the development/selection of new formulations and positively ensure bioequivalence in clinical studies.

Abstract
Artemisia cina is a plant used in traditional Chinese medicine as a remedy for parasitic diseases. This study describes the isolation and chemical characterization of anthelmintic compounds of A. cina against Haemonchus contortus infective larvae (L3) through lethal testing. Previously, three extracts-n-hexane (HexAc), ethyl acetate (EtOAc) and methanol (MeOAc)-were evaluated at concentrations of 4 to 0.5 mg/mL, resulting in the HexAc extract with the greatest effect of 76.6% mortality of the larvae at 4 mg/mL. Then, this was chemically fractioned by polarity, obtaining seven fractions (C1F1-C1F7), and, when evaluated at concentrations from 2 to 0.25 mg/mL, the 2 mg/mL C1F5 fraction produced an effect against the nematode H. contortus of 100% mortality of the larvae. Thus, this fraction was fractionated again by column chromatography, obtaining twelve subfractions (C2F1-C2F12) which were evaluated from 1 to 0.125 mg/mL, with the C2F5 subfraction causing a nematicidal effect of 100% mortality. NMR analysis of one (1H, 13C and DEPT) and two dimensions (COSY, HSQC and HMBC) and mass spectrometry of this fraction allowed us to identify the mixture of 3'-demethoxy-6-O-demethylisoguaiacin and norisoguaiacin. Therefore, it can be assumed that the mixture of these compounds is responsible for the anthelmintic effect. These results indicate that A. cina containing anthelmintic compounds and might be used as an antiparasitic drug against H. contortus.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate an n-hexane extract of Artemisia cina (Acn-h) as a natural anthelmintic treatment for periparturient goats naturally infected with the nematodes Haemonchus contortus and Teladorsagia circumcincta. A total of 200 periparturient Alpine and Nubian goats were used. Deworming criteria were based on the following parameters: fecal egg account (epg), ocular mucosa color (OMC), and body condition (BC). A previous analysis using coprocultures of the flock revealed the presence of H. contortus (80%) and T. circumcincta (20%). The Acn-h contained two new compounds identified by mass spectrometry data as isoguaiacin and norisoguaiacin at 284.14 and 315 m/z. The lethal effects of Acn-h at 0.5, 1, 2, and 4 mg/mL on H. contortus adult stages were 31.6, 66.5, 81.3, and 86.9%, respectively (p < 0.05), showing similar efficacy at 2 and 4 mg/mL with albendazole (positive control group). Then, two experimental groups, with 100 goats in peripartum in each, were distributed randomly and treated at day 0 as follows: group 1 = 4 mg/kg of Acn-h as single oral dose, and group 2 = control group, treated with water (as a placebo). The epg, OMC, and BC parameters were recorded at 0 (periparturient period), 7 (birth period), and 23 (postpartum) days and analyzed using a completely randomized design with Duncan's test for comparison of means and analysis of variance. The following epg reductions were recorded in the Acn-h-treated group as follows: 20.1 ± 34.4 and 31.7 ± 38.2% at days 7 and 23 compared to the control group. During the whole experiment, no significant differences in OMC or BC were observed in relation to the control group, excepting at day 23 (p < 0.05) for BC in the group treated with A. cina. Thus, Acn-h can be a useful natural alternative tool for the control of the nematodes H. contortus and T. circumcincta in periparturient goat flocks.

Abstract
Clenbuterol (Clb) can be present in Mexico often but not all over the world in animal tissues and organs, therefore, potentially is derived from animal sources as well. The aims of this study were to develop and validate a method for detecting traces of clenbuterol in beef sausages. A calibration curve showed linearity in the range of 20–500 pg ml−1. The limit of detection (LOD) and lower limit of quantification (LLOQ) were 5 and 10 pg g−1, respectively. The analyte recovery was from 95.70% to 100.40% with an intraday relative standard deviation (RSD%) of 0.99%–2.10% and an interday RSD% of 0.54%–2.34%, R2 = 0.9998. The methodology developed was applied successfully in 15 samples of beef sausage, and 73.3% of the samples tested contained racemic clenbuterol in concentrations between 30 and 471 pg g−1. The UHPLC–MS/MS method developed combines high sensitivity with good selectivity and short chromatographic run time. Additionally, the enantiomeric analysis of clenbuterol performed in beef sausages showed a 59% for R‐(−)‐Clb and 41% for S‐(+)‐Clb. The presence of clenbuterol in beef sausages could represent a risk of unintentional doping in sport field, because the clenbuterol is a banned substance included in the World Anti‐Doping Agency's (WADA) list of prohibited substances.

Abstract
Zilpaterol is a β-agonist compound which promotes fat loss and muscle gain in cattle, providing economic benefits. However, zilpaterol residues in the animal might introduce a significant risk to humans after consumption. In the present manuscript, a highly specific, sensitive method using Selected Reaction Monitoring (SRM) in positive electrospray ionization (ESI +) mode by liquid chromatography coupled to triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) for plasma, muscle, liver and kidney is presented. For method development, composition of the aqueous mobile phase, precipitation agent, and solid phase extraction (SPE) conditions were optimized. The method was fully validated showing a good linearity and recovery average greater than or equal to 97 % for all matrices. The method was applied to residue depletion studies in cattle after withdrawal of zilpaterol supplementation at 3, 4, 5 and 6 days showing that tissues can be consumed by humans after 4th day of zilpaterol withdrawal.

Abstract
Zilpaterol and clenbuterol are two β-adrenergic agonist drugs used in animal production. Both drugs have anabolic effects with advantages on carcass yield. Meanwhile, zilpaterol is approved for animal feed in authorized countries. Clenbuterol is a banned substance due to the risk of toxicity; however, it is still being used in unknown dose levels in many farm species. Therefore, the use and abuse of these substances should be closely monitored, considering the clenbuterol ability and the not proved yet of zilpaterol to produce reactive oxygen and nitrogen species. Regarding glutathione which is the main intracellular antioxidant plays detoxification functions on liver metabolism; in this work, it is our interest to know the capacity of chitosan-glutathione nanoparticles (CS/GSH-NP) as a complementary source of exogenous GSH to modify the oxide-reduction status on bovine precision-cut liver slice cultures (PCLS) exposed to clenbuterol and zilpaterol. A single drug assay was performed in first instance by adding clenbuterol, zilpaterol, chitosan nanoparticles (CS-NP), and CS/GSH-NP. Then combinate drug assay was carried out by testing clenbuterol and zilpaterol combined with CS-NP or CS/GSH-NP. The results showed that both β-adrenergic agonists modify in a dose-dependent manner in oxide-reduction response through ROS generation. The activity or content of glutathione peroxidase activity, intracellular GSH, gamma glutamyl-transpeptidase, aspartate aminotrasnferase and alanine aminotrasnferase were modified. The exogenous GSH delivered by nanoparticles could be used to modulate these markers.

Abstract
trans-Resveratrol, a phytochemical compound with antioxidant power and various therapeutic effects, such as cardioprotective, chemopreventive, and neuroprotective, among others, has disadvantages of poor solubility and limited stability, creating difficulties for the development of new strategies for its quantification. This study developed and validated an analytical stability method for trans-resveratrol by high-pressure liquid chromatography with photodiode-array detection (HPLC-PDA), which allowed its quantification in the presence of its degradation products. The quantification of trans-resveratrol occurred at a retention time of 2.6 min, with ammonium formate (10 mM, pH = 4)/acetonitrile, 70/30 v/v, as mobile phase. The validation met the ICH Q2 criteria of specificity, method linearity (2.8-4.2 μg/ml), precision and accuracy, robustness, quantification limit (0.176 μg/ml), and detection (0.058 μg/ml). As degradation products, cis-resveratrol was observed at 3.9 min, which could be resveratrone in 3.2 min and five unidentified products in 0.7, 1.0, 1.4, 1.8, and 5 min. Some solutions subjected to temperature stress of 40 and 60°C, UV light, and acidic and basic hydrolysis exhibited colour changes. An analytical method was obtained by HPLC-PDA, which allowed quantifying the stability of trans-resveratrol in a fast and specific manner in the presence of its degradation products.

Abstract
Zilpaterol and Clenbuterol are β-adrenergic agonists that have been widely used to feed cattle. Although the use of Zilpaterol has been approved, Clenbuterol is still used illegally at unknown doses. However, the research of both substances has been based mainly on the evaluation of residues. To our knowledge, this is the first time that a cellular model using Hep G2 cells treated with Zilpaterol and Clenbuterol is presented as an alternative approach to quantify both drugs at the cellular level. Thus, a complete analytical methodology has been developed for the accurate quantitation of these β-adrenergic agonists in both cellular compartments. We propose the use of ultra-performance liquid chromatography with photodiode array detector (UPLC-PDA) for extracellular determinations while UPLC coupled to a tandem mass spectrometer (UPLC-MS/MS) for intracellular analysis. The methods were fully validated in terms of selectivity, linearity, accuracy, and precision, limits of detection and quantitation (LOD and LOQ, respectively), stability, carryover, and matrix effect. The method for intracellular content was linear ranging from 0.25 to 8 ng/mL while for extracellular content, the concentration of Zilpaterol and Clenbuterol ranged from 0.125 to 4 μg/mL, with correlation coefficients of R > 0.98 and >0.99, respectively. The combination of the two methodologies in the cellular model showed intracellular concentrations of 0.344 ± 0.06 μg/mL and 2.483 ± 0.36 μg/mL for Zilpaterol and Clenbuterol, respectively. Extracellular concentration was 0.728 ± 0.14 μg/mL and 0.822 ± 0.11 μg/mL for Zilpaterol and Clenbuterol, respectively. This work shows the potential applications of cellular modelling in the study of toxicity for the mentioned drugs.

Abstract
Los minerales traza son nutrientes esenciales para el mantenimiento de la vida, el crecimiento y la reproducción. Las deficiencias de minerales en rumiantes afectan las funciones fisiológicas y metabólicas que con frecuencia causan enfermedades. El diseño y uso de los bolos intrarruminales de liberación controlada (BILC) es una alternativa para corregir la falta de los microelementos en el organismo. El propósito de esta revisión es evidenciar la información disponible sobre los diferentes tipos de BILC de minerales traza, así como de los métodos de fabricación que incluye: técnicas de extrusión en caliente, granulación por fusión y fusión directa. Además, se describen los efectos de BILC relacionados en la salud, en los parámetros productivos y reproductivos en rumiantes.

Abstract
The anthelmintic resistance problem is widely recognized in sheep production. Therefore, new methods of control against gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) need to be integrated. The aim of this work was to assess the toxicity of A. cina 30 CH as a homeopathic product against Haemonchus contortus in in vitro and in vivo assays. A. cina 30 CH was obtained from a commercial laboratory, and confirmation of artemisinin as a key ingredient was performed with mass spectrophotometry. The A. cina 30 CH and the artemisinin pure reagent were used for the inhibition of egg hatching (IEH) and for the inhibition of larval migration of H. contortus L3 (ILM). In addition, three groups of 10 naturally infected lambs with GIN were treated with A. cina 30 CH and albendazole, and 10 were used as control. The parasitic infection was monitored at 0, 7, 14 and 28 d postreatment (PT) to determine the number of eggs per gram (epg) and FAMACHA index. The in vitro data showed 100 % IEH and 64.7 % ILM by A. cina 30 CH, and nonlethal activity was observed with the artemisinin pure reagent. The toxicity of A. cina 30 CH against H. contortus in infected lambs was observed after 7 d of infection. Administration of the A. cina 30 CH yielded a 69 % reduction in the epg at 28 d PT, similar to the albendazole (P<0.05). In conclusion, A. cina 30 CH had the ability to IEH and ILM of H. contortus in in vitro assays and reduced the number of eggs of H. contortus, which is the primary parasitic nematode in grazing lambs, thereby reducing infection.

Abstract
Abstract
Clenbuterol (4-amino-α-[(tert-butylamino)methyl]-3,5-dichlorobenzylalcohol) is a β2-adrenergic agonist. The consumption of meat contaminated with clenbuterol can lead to increased heart rate, blood pressure, anxiety, palpitations and skeletal muscle tremors. Several analytical methods have been developed to identify and quantify clenbuterol in different biological matrices. In this report, we have developed a specific and sensitive analytical method for quantifying clenbuterol and performed an in-depth enantiomeric analysis in bovine urine. The method was evaluated in accordance with international guidelines, and we used an isotopically labeled analog as an internal standard. The extraction efficiency for clenbuterol in bovine urine was > 98%, the limit of detection was 0.05 ng/mL and the limit of quantification was 0.10 ng/mL. Our assay showed high specificity, no carryover was observed and the assay was linear in the range 0.10–8.0 ng/mL. Fifteen bovine urine samples were analyzed (containing clenbuterol), and an enantiomeric analysis was performed. The clenbuterol concentration range was 0.10–10.56 ng/mL across these samples. The levorotatory enantiomer was detected at greater concentrations than the dextrorotatory enantiomer, the ratio being 1.7 ± 0.6 (n = 15), and a statistical difference was observed (P < 0.05) using the Wilcoxon test.

Abstract
Clenbuterol is known to improve competition resistance and muscular growth in athletes. Although it is an illegal drug, its use by farmers is widely spread to induce growth of their cattle. Thus, when clenbuterol is found in the urine of an athlete, there is doubt whether it was consumed with doping purposes or if it is due to the consumption of meat from a clenbuterol-fed animal. Previous studies suggest that enantiomeric relationship of clenbuterol may be different according to the intake source. However, the enantiomeric relationship throughout a doping cycle or a continuous intake of contaminated meat has not yet been explored. In this first approximation, our aim was the development and validation of a sensitive and rapid method for the determination of S- (+) and R- (─) clenbuterol enantiomers to be used in a controlled study in rats fed for one week with contaminated meat or simulating a doping cycle. Enantiomers were measured using liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry with a triple quadrupole analyzer (LC-TQ-MS) and were separated on an AGP Chiralpak column. The method was fully validated following the VICH (Veterinary International Conference on Harmonization guidelines) and was linear in the range of 12.5-800 pg/mL with a correlation coefficient of ≥0.98 for each enantiomer, and with a limit of quantitation and detection (LOQ and LOD) of 12.5 pg/mL and 6.5 pg/mL, respectively, for both enantiomers. The application of this method pointed out the shift of the enantiomeric relationship in urine from rats during the first five days of the doping cycle compared to those fed with contaminated meat. This finding can be of substantial importance in further doping studies.

Abstract
Mexico City's Metropolitan Area (MCMA) includes Mexico City and 60 municipalities of the neighbor states. Inhabitants are exposed to emissions from over five million vehicles and stationary sources of air pollutants such as particulate matter (PM) and ozone. MCMA PM contains elemental carbon and organic carbon (OC). OCs include polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), many of which induce mutagenic and carcinogenic DNA adducts. Gestational exposure to air pollution has been associated with increased risk of intrauterine growth restriction, preterm birth or low birth weight risk, and PAH-DNA adducts. These effects also depend on the presence of risk alleles. We investigated the presence of bulky PAH-DNA adducts, plasma 8-iso-PGF2α (8-iso-prostaglandin F2α ) and risk allele variants in neonates cord blood and their non-smoking mothers' leucocytes from families that were living in a highly polluted area during 2014-2015. The presence of adducts was significantly associated with both PM2.5 and PM10 levels, mainly during the last trimester of gestation in both neonates and mothers, while the last month of pregnancy was significant for the association between ozone levels and maternal plasma 8-iso-PGF2α . Fetal CYP1B1*3 risk allele was associated with increased adduct levels in neonates while the presence of the maternal allele significantly reduced the levels of fetal adducts. Maternal NQO1*2 was associated with lower maternal levels of adducts. Our findings suggest the need to reduce actual PM limits in MCMA. We did not observe a clear association between PM and/or adduct levels and neonate weight, length, body mass index, Apgar or Capurro score. Environ. Mol. Abstract
Decreases in the use of antibiotics and anticoccidials in the poultry industry have risen the appearance of necrotic enteritis (NE). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of a Bacillus direct-fed microbial (DFM) on growth performance, intestinal integrity, NE lesions and ileal microbiota using a previously established NE-challenged model. At day-of-hatch, chicks were randomly assigned to three different groups: Negative control (NC), Positive control (PC) challenged with Salmonella Typhimurium (day 1), Eimeria maxima (EM, day 13) and Clostridium perfringens (CP, day 18-19), and Bacillus-DFM group (DFM) challenged as the PC. Body weight (BW) and body weight gain (BWG) were measured weekly. Total feed intake (FI) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) were evaluated at day 21. Liver samples were collected to assess bacterial translocation and blood samples were used to measure superoxide dismutase (SOD) and fluorescein isothiocyanate-dextran (FITC-d). Intestinal contents were obtained for determination of total IgA and microbiota analysis. NE lesion scores (LS) were performed at day 21. Chickens consuming the DFM significantly improved BW and had a numerically more efficient FCR compared to PC at day 21. Additionally, there were no significant differences in FCR between the DFM group and NC. Furthermore, the DFM group showed significant reductions in LS, IgA and FITC-d levels compared to the PC. However, there were no significant differences in SOD between the groups. The microbiota analysis indicated that the phylum Proteobacteria was significantly reduced in the DFM group in comparison to PC. At the genus level, Clostridium, Turicibacter, Enterococcus, and Streptococcus were reduced, whereas, Lactobacillus and Bacillus were increased in the DFM group as compared to PC (p < 0.05). Likewise, the DFM significantly reduced CP as compared to PC. In contrary, no significant differences were observed in bacterial composition between NC vs. DFM. In addition, beta diversity showed significant differences in the microbial community structure between NC vs. PC, and PC vs. DFM. These results suggest that the dietary inclusion of a selected DFM could mitigate the complex negative impacts caused by NE possibly through mechanism(s) that might involve modulation of the gut microbiota.

Abstract. Curcumin has gained great attention in the last decades due to its fascinating properties for humans, such as anti-inflammatory or as cytotoxic against cancer. These effects are also claimed for pets such as cats and dogs, where curcumin administration is a daily practice routine. However, curcumin presents poor oral bioavailability, driving scientists to look for new delivery systems. In the last decades, several analytical methods for the quantification of curcumin in plasma have been published. To our knowledge there are no published reports on the effect of the level of hemolysis in the determination of this compound. In the present paper, a highly specific, sensitive and selective method is presented using Molecular Reaction Monitoring (SRM) using positive ionization (ESI+) mode. Curcumin and clopidogrel bisulfate – used as internal standard (IS) – were separated on an Acquity UPLC BECH Shield RP 18 column (1.7µm, 2.1 X 100mm) with 0.1% formic acid in acetonitrile and water in proportion of 60:40 (v/v). The analyte transitions were 369.3→177.06 m/z for curcumin and 322→212.05 m/z for IS. The method was fully validated and showed good linearity (R2 ≥ 0.999) over the range of 3-160 ng/mL. The Relative Standard Deviation (RSD) were less than 6% for intra-and inter-day analysis and recovery spanned 85-95%. We proved that the degree of hemolysis impaired curcumin quantitation. This method was applied to test curcumin bioavailability in both a mucoadhesive nanocapsule formulation and traditional capsules in dogs that attended routine veterinary consultation.Resumen. La curcumina ha ganado gran atención en las últimas décadas debido a sus propiedades terapéuticas para los humanos, como antiinflamatorio o citotóxico contra el cáncer. Estos efectos también se observan en pequeñas especies como gatos y perros, donde la administración de curcumina se ha vuelto una alternativa. Sin embargo, la curcumina presenta una baja biodisponibilidad oral, lo que impulsa a los científicos a buscar nuevos sistemas de administración. En las últimas décadas, se han publicado varios métodos analíticos para la cuantificación de curcumina en plasma. Actualmente, no hay informes publicados sobre el efecto del grado de hemólisis en la determinación de este compuesto. En este trabajo se desarrolló un método específico, sensible y selectivo utilizando el Monitoreo de reacción seleccionado (SRM) en modo de ionización positiva (ESI +). La curcumina y el bisulfato de clopidogrel, utilizado como patrón interno (IS), se separaron en una columna Acquity UPLC BECH Shield RP 18 (1,7 μm, 2,1 X 100 mm) con ácido fórmico al 0,1% en acetonitrilo y agua a una proporción de 60:40 (v/v). Las transiciones de los analitos fueron 369.3 → 177.06 m/z para curcumina y 322 → 212.05 m/z para IS. El método fue validado y demostró ser lineal (r2 ≥ 0.999) en el rango de 3-160 ng/mL. La desviación relativa estándar (RSD) fue inferior al 6% para el análisis intra e interdía y el porcentaje de recuperación fue 85-95%. Se descubrió que el grado de hemólisis afecta la cuantificación de curcumina. El método desarrollado se aplicó para evaluar la biodisponibilidad de curcumina tanto en una formulación de nanocápsulas mucoadhesivas como en cápsulas tradicionales en perros que asistieron a consultas veterinarias de rutina.

Abstract
A new, rapid, simple and specific method to determine 5-chloro 8-hydroxyquinoline (5-HQ) and 5,7-dichloro 8-hydroxyquinoline (5,7-HQ) stability in swine feed was optimized and validated. A system consisting of an ACQUITY UPLC BEH C18 column (1.7 μm, 2.1 mm × 100 mm), a mobile phase of acetonitrile-0.1% o-phosphoric acid (55:45 v/v) with a 0.5 mL/min flow rate, and a PDA detector (247 nm) were used. The retention times of 5-HQ and 5,7-HQ, were 0.77 min and 1.6 min, respectively. The pure drug was subjected to acid and alkali hydrolysis, chemical oxidation and UV light degradation to perform forced degradation studies. 5,7-HQ was more susceptible to degradation than 5-HQ. The figures of merit of the method (linearity, accuracy, precision, and robustness) were determined. The method was successfully applied to estimate the stability of both analytes in medicated feed.

Abstract
Experiments were carried out to evaluate the effectiveness of three different biosorbents (banana peel, Pyracantha leaves, and Aloe powder) in removing aflatoxin B₁ (AFB₁). A noncommercial mycotoxin binder (zeolite) was used as a reference material. A laboratory model that simulated the in vivo conditions of the poultry gastrointestinal tract was utilized to prove the removal efficiency of the biosorbents when added to AFB₁-contaminated diet (100 µg/kg). The concentration of AFB₁ was determined using antibody-based immunoaffinity column and spectrofluorometry methodologies. Z potential (ζ), point of zero charge (pHpzc), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy with attenuated total reflection (FTIR-ATR), and UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) techniques were used to further characterize the biosorbents. The addition of the biosorbents (1.5%, w/w) to the diet significantly reduced the bioavailability of AFB₁ in the intestinal section. The highest aflatoxin adsorption values were 69% and 70% using Aloe powder and zeolite, respectively. A moderate biosorption uptake of 46% was achieved using Pyracantha leaves. The biomaterial with the lowest removal capacity was banana peel (28%). In conclusion, Aloe powder could be used as an alternative to conventional systems for AFB₁ removal.

Abstract
RATIONALE Isoprostane 8-iso-PGF2α is a biomarker of lipid peroxidation in cell membranes. The method developed to measure plasma total levels (esterified + free) of 8-iso-PGF2α must be reproducible and be able to reduce the use of solvents in solid phase extraction. It should be useful to evaluate oxidative stress due to the excess of free radicals that are generated by some disorder or disease. METHODS The method was developed using solid-phase microextraction with Oasis®MAX μElution plates and ultra-performance liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC/MS/MS). Electrospray ionization was performed in the negative mode (ESI-); the multiple reaction monitoring mode (MRM) was used. The development of the method included the optimization of the chromatographic conditions to achieve the separation of PGF2α and 8-iso-PGF2α as well as the optimization of the microextraction conditions of the analyte of interest in ovine and goat plasma. RESULTS The developed method was validated with a calibration curve of plasma samples fortified with standards at five concentration levels in the range 49-639 pg/mL. The average recovery was 89% with a standard deviation of 10.73%. The inter-day precision was evaluated, obtaining a coefficient of variance (CV) less than 15%. The limit of quantification was 20 pg/mL and the limit of detection was 10 pg/mL. 8-iso-PGF2a was determined in the plasma of 14 sheep and 20 goats of 5 months of age and 6 goats of 24 months of age. The concentrations found were 50-300 pg/mL. CONCLUSIONS The method developed is precise, accurate and reliable with low reagent consumption compared with conventional solid-phase extraction. The analysis time was decreased because, with the use of the microextraction plate, the step of the evaporation and reconstitution of the analyte was avoided. The method is applicable to quantify the plasma total levels (esterified + free) of 8-iso-PGF2α.

Abstract
AIMS To compare the conventional plating method vs a fluorometric method using PrestoBlue® as a dye by determining the antimicrobial activity of two organic acids and curcumin (CUR) against Salmonella Enteritidis in an avian in vitro digestion model that simulates the crop, proventriculus and intestine. METHODS AND RESULTS A concentration of 108 CFU per ml of S. Enteritidis was exposed to groups with different rates of ascorbic acid (AA), boric acid (BA) and CUR. Significant differences were observed when the means of the treatments were compared with the controls in the compartments that simulate the crop and intestine (P < 0·05). Ascorbic acid alone and high rates of AA in the mixtures were the most efficient treatments in the crop compartment. However, in the intestinal compartment BA alone and at different rates in the mixture BA-CUR (1 : 1) were the best treatments to decrease the concentration of S. Enteritidis. CONCLUSIONS The results of this study suggest that there could be an antagonistic bactericidal effect between AA and CUR and AA and BA as well as a synergistic bactericidal effect between BA and CUR. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY These findings may contribute to the development of a formulation with microencapsulated compounds to liberate them in different compartments to combat S. Enteritidis infections in broiler chickens.

Abstract
Mycotoxins are secondary toxic metabolites that are produced by fungi representing threats to human and animal health. The objective of this study was to evaluate the adsorption capacity of Chitosan (CHI), and three cellulosic polymers (HPMC, CMC, and MCC), on six mycotoxins (AFB1; FUB1; OTA; T-2; DON; and, ZEA) using an in vitro digestive model for poultry. The adsorbent capacity of the materials in the supernatant of each compartment was evaluated by a non-competitive chemiluminescent assay. Control groups with no adsorbent material had an adsorption value of 0.00% against all six mycotoxins that were evaluated. All four materials tested showed significant (p < 0.05) binding activity against all of the mycotoxins when compared with the control non-treated group. However HPMC, CMC, and MCC showed better adsorbent capacity when compared with CHI.

Abstract
A reversed phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) method for determination of Thimerosal (TMS) in topical creams was optimized and validated according to the ICH guidelines which include accuracy, precision, selectivity, robustness, limit of detection (LOD), limit of quantification (LOQ), linearity and range. For topical creams, sample treatment is often an overwhelming step essentially due to its oily nature. For the first time a simple and robust extraction procedure for TMS using phosphate buffer (pH 5.5, 0.2M) was successfully developed. This method describes the TMS quantitation by HPLC in a topical product containing 0.01% fluocinolone acetonide (FLA) as the active molecule. The HPLC separation was achieved on a Column Symmetry® and a methanol: phosphate buffer (pH 2.5, 0.05M) 70:30 v/v mobile phase and wavelength 218 nm. Results from both standards and samples showed adequate validation parameters. Noteworthy, linearity was within the range 1.2 - 2.8 μg/mL. Additionally, robustness and TMS stability were established after sample extraction. The method provides an efficient and safe quality control tool for determination of TMS in topical creams.
