Abstract
In the present work, a batch preconcentration technique using nanoclay with 5-(4-dimethylaminobenzylidene)rhodanine coupled with electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry was developed for the separation and determination of trace amounts of palladium. In this method, the sample solution was stirred with nanoclay as an adsorbent. Then, adsorbed palladium was subsequently eluted with HCl in acetone (1.5 mol L−1) and, finally, this eluate was injected to electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry. Under the optimum conditions, the limit of detection and linear dynamic range were found to be 2.6 and 10.0–133 ng L−1 (in original solution), respectively. Furthermore, the enrichment factor and relative standard deviation of seven replicate determinations were 148 and ±5.1 %, respectively. This suggested method is simple, selective and sensitive and can be applied to the extraction and determination of palladium in water, tea leaves, synthetic sample and certified reference material with satisfactory results.

Abstract
A novel, highly selective, efficient and reusable chelating resin, diphenyldiketone-monothiosemicarbazone modified silica gel, was prepared and applied for the on-line separation and preconcentration of Pd(II) ions in catalytic converter and spiked tap water samples. Several parameters like effect of pH, sample volume, flow rate, type of eluent, and influence of various ionic interferences, etc. were evaluated for effective adsorption of palladium at trace levels. The resin was found to be highly selective for Pd(II) ions in the pH range 4-5 with a very high sorption capacity of 0.73 mmol/g and preconcentration factor of 335. The present environment friendly procedure has also been applied for large-scale extraction by employing the use of newly designed reactor in which on-line separation and preconcentration of Pd can be carried out easily and efficiently in short duration of time.

Abstract
A new simple and reliable method for rapid and selective extraction and determination of the trace levels of Pd(2+) ion was developed by dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction preconcentration and flame atomic absorption spectrometry detection. In the proposed approach, thioridazine HCl (TRH) was used as a Pd(2+) ion selective complexing agent. The effective parameters on the extraction recovery were studied and optimized utilizing two decent optimization methods; factorial design and central composite design (CCD). Through factorial design the best efficiency of extraction acquired using ethanol and chloroform as dispersive and extraction solvents respectively. CCD optimization resulted in 1.50 mL of dispersive solvent; 0.15 mL of extraction solvent; 0.45 mg of TRH and 250 mg of potassium chloride salt per 5 mL of sample solution. Under the optimum conditions the calibration graph was linear over the range 100-2000 microgL(-1). The average relative standard deviation was 0.7% for five repeated determinations. The limit of detection was 90 microg L(-1). The average enrichment factor and recovery reached 45.7% and 74.2% respectively. The method was successfully applied to the determination of trace amounts of palladium in the real water samples.

Abstract
The univariate and multivariate calibration methods were applied for the determination of trace amounts of palladium based on the catalytic effect on the reaction between resazurine and sulfide. The decrease in absorbance of resazurine at 602 nm over a fixed time is proportional to the concentration of palladium over the range of 10.0-160.0 ng mL(-1). The calibration matrix for partial least squares (PLS) regression was designed with 14 samples. Orthogonal signal correction (OSC) is a preprocessing technique used for removing the information unrelated to the target variables based on constrained principal component analysis. OSC is a suitable preprocessing method for PLS calibration without loss of prediction ability using spectrophotometric method. The root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) for palladium determination with fixed-time, PLS and OSC-PLS were 3.71, 2.84 and 0.68, respectively. This procedure allows the determination of palladium in synthetic and real samples with good reliability of the determination.
