Abstract
A fluorescence ratio sensor based on dansyl-peptide, Dansyl-Glu-Cys-Glu-Glu-Trp-NH2 (D-P5), was efficiently synthesized by Fmoc solid phase peptide synthesis. The sensor exhibits high selectivity and sensitivity for Ag+ over 16 metal ions in 100 mM sodium perchlorate and 50 mM 2-[4-(2-hydroxyethyl)piperazin-1-yl]ethanesulfonic acid buffer solution by fluorescence resonance energy transfer. The 1:1 binding stoichiometry of the sensor and Ag+ is measured by fluorescence ratio response and the job's plot. The dissociation constant of the sensor with Ag+ was calculated to be 6.4 × 10-9 M, which indicates that the sensor has an effective binding affinity for Ag+. In addition, the limit of detection of the sensor for Ag+ was determined to be 80 nM, which also indicates that the sensor has a high sensitivity to Ag+. Result showed that the sensor is an excellent Ag+ sensor under neutral condition. Furthermore, this sensor displays good practicality for Ag+ detection in river water samples without performing tedious sample pretreatment, as well as for silver chloride detection.

Abstract
A novel multifunctional fluorescent peptide sensor based on pentapeptide dansyl-Gly-His-Gly-Gly-Trp-COOH (D-P5) was designed and synthesized efficiently using Fmoc solid-phase peptide synthesis (SPPS). This fluorescent peptide sensor shows selective and sensitive responses to Hg2+ and Cu2+ among 17 metal ions and six anions studied in N-2-hydroxyethylpiperazine-N-2-ethane sulfonic acid (HEPES) buffer solution. The peptide probe differentiates Hg2+ and Cu2+ ions by a 'turn-on' response to Hg2+ and a 'turn-off' response to Cu2+ . Upon addition of Hg2+ or Cu2+ ions, the sensor displayed an apparent color change that was visible under an ultraviolet lamp to the naked eye. The limits of detection (LOD) of DP-5 were 25.0 nM for Hg2+ and 85.0 nM for Cu2+ ; the detection limits for Cu2+ were much lower than the drinking water maximum contaminant levels set out by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA). It is noteworthy that both D-P5-Hg and D-P5-Cu systems were also used to detect S2- successfully based on the formation of ternary complexes. The LODs of D-P5-Hg and D-P5-Cu systems for S2- were 217.0 nM and 380.0 nM, respectively. Furthermore, the binding stoichiometry, binding affinity and pH sensitivity of the probe for Hg2+ and Cu2+ were investigated. This study gives new possibilities for using a short fluorescent peptide sensor for multifunctional detection, especially for anions.

Abstract
The authors describe an "off-on" colorimetric and fluorometric assay for the determination of Cu(II). It is based on the use of upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) of type NaYF4:Yb(III),Er(III) that were functionalized with branched polyethylenimine (BPEI). A color change from colorless to blue occurs within 2 s after addition of Cu(II) to a solution of the modified UCNPs. The color change can be visually detected at Cu(II) concentrations down to 80 μM. The upconversion fluorescence of the modified UCNPs, measured at excitation wavelength of 980 nm, is reduced due to the predominant inner filter effect caused by the formation of the BPEI-Cu(II) complex. Normalized fluorescence intensity drops linearly in the 50 nM to 10 μM Cu(II) concentration range, and the fluorometric detection limit is 45 nM. Both the color and the fluorescence are recovered on addition of EDTA. Excellent selectivity over other metal ions and anions is achieved. Graphical abstract Upconversion nanoparticles of type NaYF4:Yb,Er were functionalized with branched polyethylenimine (UCNP/BPEI) and used in an "off-on" colorimetric and fluorometric assay for Cu(II). The upconversion fluorescence is selectively quenched on addition of Cu(II), and this is accompanied by a rapid colorless-to-blue color switch. The colorimetric changes and quenched fluorescence can be reversed by adding EDTA.

Abstract
Antibiotic abuse has been bringing serious pollution in water, which is closely related to human health. It is desirable to develop a new strategy for antibiotic detection. To address this problem, a sensitive fluorescent aptasensor for antibiotic detection was developed by utilizing gold nanoparticles modified magnetic bead composites (AuNPs/MBs) and nicking enzyme. AuNPs/MBs were synthesized with the help of polyethylenimine (PEI). The prepared AuNPs/MBs acted as dual-functional scaffolds that owned excellent magnetic separation capacity and strong covalent bio-conjugation. The non-specifically absorbed aptamers in AuNPs/MBs were less than that in MBs. Hence, the fluorescent aptasensor based on AuNPs/MBs show a better signal to background ratio than that based on carboxyl modified magnetic beads (MBs). In this work, ampicillin was employed as a model analyte. In the presence of ampicillin, the specific binding between ampicillin and aptamer induced structure-switching that led to the release of partial complementary DNA (cDNA) of aptamer. Then, the released cDNA initiated the cycle of nicking enzyme assisted signal amplification (NEASA). Therefore, a large amount of taqman probes were cleaved and fluorescence signal was amplified. The prepared fluorescent aptasensor bring sensitive detection in range of 0.1-100 ng mL-1 with the limit of detection of 0.07 ng mL-1. Furthermore, this aptasensor was also successfully applied in real sample detection with acceptable accuracy. The fluorescent aptasensor provides a promising method for efficient, rapid and sensitive antibiotic detection.

Abstract
We use the multiple antibiotic resistance regulator (MarR), as a highly selective biorecognition elements in a multipath colourimetric sensing strategy for the fast detection of Cu2+ in water samples. The colourimetric assay is based on the aggregation of MarR-coated gold nanoparticles in the presence of Cu2+ ions, which induces a red-to-purple colour change of the solution. The colour variation in the gold nanoparticle aggregation process can be used for qualitative and quantitative detection of Cu2+ by the naked eye, and with UV–vis and smartphone-based approaches. The three analysis techniques used in the multipath colourimetric assay complement each other and provide greater flexibility for differing requirements and conditions, making the assay highly applicable for Cu2+ detection. Under optimal conditions, the Cu2+ concentration was quantified in less than 5 min with limits of detection for the naked eye, UV–vis and smartphone-based approaches of 1 μM, 405 nM and 61 nM, respectively. Moreover, the sensing system exhibited excellent selectivity and practical application for Cu2+ detection in real water samples. Thus, our strategy has great potential for application in on-site monitoring of Cu2+, and the unique response of MarR towards copper ions may provide a new approach to Cu2+ sensing.

Abstract
Melamine is nitrogen rich chemical compound used as an adulterant in dairy products by unscrupulous people to increase the apparent protein content. This incident prompted the researchers to develop simple methods for easy detection of melamine in food samples. In the present paper, we report a simple and sensitive colorimetric method for detection of melamine in milk based on silver nanoparticles. This method relies upon the principle that melamine causes the aggregation of silver nanoparticles, resulting in abrupt color change from yellow to red under optimized conditions. The concentration of melamine in adulterated sample can be quantitated by monitoring the absorption spectra of silver nanoparticles using ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectrometer. The present colorimetric method which utilizes silver nanoparticles of 35 nm can reliably detect melamine down to a concentration of 0.04 mg l(-1).
