A nanocarbon paste electrode modified with nitrogen-doped graphene for square wave anodic stripping voltammetric determination of trace lead and cadmium

Thiol-based chemically modified carbon screen-printed electrode for simultaneous quantification of trace level Pb(II) and Cd(II)

Present work reports, the development of a novel electrochemical sensor based on a diazonium-coupling reaction and covalent attachment of the -NH2 group of cysteamine (Cyst) on screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE), for simultaneous determination of Pb(II) and Cd(II). Initially, the in-situ generated 4-carboxyphenyl (4-CP) diazonium salt was electro-grafted to generate 4-CP/SPCE, followed by covalent bonding of terminal carboxylic group of 4-CP with -NH2 group of Cyst to give Cyst/4-CP/SPCE. The modified electrode showed an enhanced selectivity and sensitivity toward the quantification of Pb(II) and Cd(II) using square wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV) without mutual interference. Under optimal experimental conditions, the newly designed sensor showed a wide linear range of 0.01 µM to 0.7 µM. The limit of detection (LOD) obtained was 0.882 nM (0.09 ppb) and 0.65 nM (0.134 ppb) for Cd(II) and Pb(II), respectively. The modified SPCE exhibited good stability, selectivity, and reproducibility. Furthermore, the sensor was successfully applied for the determination of Pb(II) and Cd(II) ions in water samples which illustrated excellent recoveries in different spiked samples and the results were in line with the standard ICP-AES analysis.

Application of electrochemical sensors based on nanomaterials modifiers in the determination of antipsychotics

At present, the content of antipsychotics in samples is always analyzed by traditional detection methods, including mass spectrometry (MS), spectrophotometry, fluorescence, capillary electrophoresis (CE). However, conventional methods are cumbersome and complex, require a large sample volume, many pre-processing steps, long analysis cycles, expensive instruments, and need well-trained detection capabilities personnel. In addition, patients with schizophrenia require frequent and painful blood collection procedures, which adds additional treatment costs and time burdens. In view of these factors, electrochemical methods have become the most promising candidate technology for timely analysis due to their low cost, simple operation, excellent sensitivity and specificity. As we all know, nanomaterials play an extremely important role in electrochemical sensing applications. As the sensor modifiers, nanomaterials enable electrochemical analysis to overcome the time-consuming and labor-intensive shortcomings of traditional detection methods, and greatly reduce the research cost. Nanomaterials modified electrodes can be used as sensors to determine the concentration of antipsychotics in organisms quickly and accurately, which is a bright spot in the application of nanomaterials. The combination of different nanomaterials can even form a nanocomposite with a synergistic effect. This paper firstly reviews the application of nanomaterials-modified sensors on the basis of research in the past ten years, reviews the use of nanomaterial-modified sensors to quickly and accurately determine the concentration of antipsychotics in biological samples, and demonstrates a new idea of using nanomaterials sensors for drug monitoring and determination. At the end of this review, a brief overview is given of the limitations and the future prospects of nanomaterial sensors for the determination of antipsychotics concentrations.

An electrochemical DNA biosensor based on nitrogen-doped graphene nanosheets decorated with gold nanoparticles for genetically modified maize detection

A reliable electrochemical biosensor is reported based on nitrogen-doped graphene nanosheets and gold nanoparticle (Au/N-G) nanocomposites for the event-specific detection of GM maize MIR162. The differential pulse voltammetry response of methylene blue (MB) was chosen to monitor the target DNA hybridization event. Under the optimum conditions, the peak current increased linearly with the logarithm of the concentration of DNA in the range 1.0 × 10^-14 to 1.0 × 10^-8 M, and the detection limit was 2.52 × 10^-15 M (S/N = 3). It is also demonstrated that the DNA biosensor has high selectivity, good stability, and fabrication reproducibility. The biosensor has been effectively applied to detect MIR162 in real samples, showing its potential as an effective tool for GM crop analysis. These results will contribute to the development of new portable transgenic detection systems. Graphical abstract .

Graphene-derived nanomaterials as recognition elements for electrochemical determination of heavy metal ions: a review

This review (with 155 refs.) summarizes the progress made in the past few years in the field of electrochemical sensors based on graphene-derived materials for the determination of heavy metal ions. Following an introduction of this field and a discussion of the various kinds of modified graphenes including graphene oxide and reduced graphene oxide, the review covers graphene based electrodes modified (or doped) with (a) heteroatoms, (b) metal nanoparticles, (c) metal oxides, (d) small organic molecules, (e) polymers, and (f) ternary nanocomposites. Tables are provided that afford an overview of representative methods and materials for fabricating electrochemical sensors. Furthermore, sensing mechanisms are discussed. A concluding section presents new perspectives, opportunities and current challenges. A glassy carbon electrode modified with a bismuth film and laser etched graphene for simultaneous voltammetric sensing of Cd(II) and Pb(II)

Polyimide (PI) sheets were laser etched to obtain graphene-based carbon nanomaterials (LEGCNs). These were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy which confirmed the presence of stacked multilayer graphene nanosheets. Their large specific surface and large number of edge-plane active sites facilitate the accumulation of metal ions. A glassy carbon electrode (GCE) with an in-situ plated bismuth film was modified with the LEGCNs to give a sensor with satisfactory response for the simultaneous determination of cadmium(II) and lead(II) by means of square wave anodic stripping voltammetry. It appears that is the first report on an electrochemical sensor based on the use of laser etched graphene for determination of heavy metal ions. Figures of merit for detection of Cd(II) include (a) a low and well separated working potential of -0.80 V (vs. Ag/AgCl), (b) a wide linear range (from 7 to 120 μg·L^-1), and a low detection limits 0.47 μg·L^-1. The respective data for Pb(II) are (a) -0.55 V, (b) 5 to 120 μg·L^-1, and (c) 0.41 μg·L^-1. The modified GCE displays remarkable repeatability, reproducibility, selectivity and stability. The sensor was applied to the simultaneous determination of Cd(II) and Pb(II) in spiked real water samples. The results confirm that the laser etching technique is an efficient tool for the preparation of carbon nanomaterials with high quality and great sensing performance. Cu x O@DNA sphere-based electrochemical bioassay for sensitive detection of Pb2

The paper describes a one-step synthetic method to chemically reduce cupric sulfate by ascorbic acid in the presence of DNA strands to directly produce Cu _x O@DNA spheres. The DNA strands act as template to assist the preparation of Cu _x O, and also are capable of specifically binding  Pb(II) ions. The Cu _x O@DNA spheres possess high specific surface area and strong bioaffinity. They can be directly employed as platform for detecting Pb²⁺ sensitively. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy data showed that the assay exhibits high sensitivity and a wide linear analytical range that extends from 0.1 to 100 nM, and the detection limit is 6.8 pM at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3. The assay is selective, acceptably reproducible, stable, and well feasible for the detection of Pb²⁺ in blood serum.
