Magnetite nanoparticles coated with covalently immobilized ionic liquids as a sorbent for extraction of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs from biological fluids

Fabrication of sea urchin shaped polyaniline-modified magnetic microporous organic network for efficient extraction of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs from animal-derived food samples

In this work, a novel polyaniline-modified magnetic microporous organic network (MMON-PANI) composite was fabricated for effective magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE) of five typical nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) from animal-derived food samples before high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) detection. The core-shell sea urchin shaped MMON-PANI integrates the merits of Fe3O4, MON, and PANI, exhibiting large specific surface area, rapid magnetic responsiveness, good stability, and multiple binding sites to NSAIDs. Convenient and effective extraction of trace NSAIDs from chicken, beef and pork samples is realized on MMON-PANI via the synergetic π-π, hydrogen bonding, hydrophobic, and electrostatic interactions. Under optimal conditions, the MMON-PANI-MSPE-HPLC-UV method exhibits wide linear ranges (0.2-1000 μg L-1), low limits of detection (0.07-1.7 μg L-1), good precisions (intraday and inter-day RSDs < 5.4 %, n = 3), large enrichment factors (98.6-99.9), and less adsorbent consumption (3 mg). The extraction mechanism and selectivity of MMON-PANI are also evaluated in detail. This work proves the incorporation of PANI onto MMON is an efficient way to promote NSAIDs enrichment and provides a new strategy to synthesize multifunctional MON-based composites in sample pretreatment.

Porphyrin-based magnetic porous organic polymer for efficient magnetic solid phase extraction of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs from water

The ubiquitous occurrence of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in the environmental water system has drawn significant concerns due to their adverse effects. The accurate monitoring the content of them is of great significance but challenging in terms of the complex matrix and trace concentration. In this work, a porphyrin-based magnetic porous organic polymer composite (PM-POP) was prepared through a solvent-free synthetic method. Owing to the highly porous structure and strong affinities, the as-prepared PM-POP could be utilized as a highly efficient adsorbent for the magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE) of NSAIDs. Combining with the high-performance liquid chromatography separation with ultraviolet detector (HPLC-UV), a sensitive analytical method was established, which exhibited wide linear ranges (0.1-400 μg/L) and large enrichment factors (EFs) (39.5-82.9 folds) along with good precision (intra-day RSD ≤ 4.9%) and repeatability (inter-day RSD ≤ 8.4%). Ultimately, it was applied to determinate trace NSAIDs in practical water samples successfully, demonstrating its good application prospect in environmental analysis.

Novel aqueous biphasic system based on ionic liquid for the simultaneous extraction of seven active pharmaceutical ingredients in aquatic environment

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and antibiotics are classes of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), which are continuously contaminating the ecosystem through various anthropogenic activities. Because of their pseudo-persistence in the aquatic environment and their potentially chronic effects on aquatic life, it is important to closely monitor their concentrations in the aquatic environment using a sensitive analytical method. Sustainable aqueous biphasic systems (ABSs) composed of ionic liquids and biodegradable organic salt (sodium malate) were proposed. The phase diagrams of the systems were firstly determined, and [N₄₄₄₄]Cl-based ABS was selected for the simultaneous extraction and preconcentration of seven APIs. With the developed ABS, extraction efficiencies of APIs close to 100% were obtained. For the developed method, limits of detection (LODs) of 45, 65, 76, 14, 60, 48, and 51 ng L^-1 were obtained for indomethacin, ibuprofen, diclofenac, naproxen, ketoprofen, flurbiprofen, and chloramphenicol, respectively, providing from 1216- to 1238-fold improvement as compared with the analysis without preconcentration. From an economic and environmental point of view, we can predict the prospects and competitive position of the method developed.

Application of magnetic nanomaterials in magnetic in-tube solid-phase microextraction

Development of magnetic nanomaterials has greatly promoted the innovation of in-tube solid-phase microextraction. This review article gives an insight into recent advances in the modifications and applications of magnetic nanomaterials for in-tube solid-phase microextraction. Also, different magnetic nanomaterials which have recently been utilized as in-tube solid-phase microextraction sorbents are classified. This study shows that magnetic nanomaterials have gained significant attention owing to large specific surface area, selective absorption, and surface modification. Magnetic in-tube solid-phase microextraction has been applied for the analysis of food samples, biological, and environmental. However, for full development of magnetic in-tube SPME, effort is still needed to overcome limitations, such as mechanical stability, selectivity and low extraction efficiency. To achieve these objectives, research on magnetic in-tube SPME is mainly focused in the preparation of new extractive phases.

The Influence of Ionic Liquids on the Effectiveness of Analytical Methods Used in the Monitoring of Human and Veterinary Pharmaceuticals in Biological and Environmental Samples-Trends and Perspectives

Recent years have seen the increased utilization of ionic liquids (ILs) in the development and optimization of analytical methods. Their unique and eco-friendly properties and the ability to modify their structure allows them to be useful both at the sample preparation stage and at the separation stage of the analytes. The use of ILs for the analysis of pharmaceuticals seems particularly interesting because of their systematic delivery to the environment. Nowadays, they are commonly detected in many countries at very low concentration levels. However, due to their specific physiological activity, pharmaceuticals are responsible for bioaccumulation and toxic effects in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems as well as possibly upsetting the body's equilibrium, leading to the dangerous phenomenon of drug resistance. This review will provide a comprehensive summary of the use of ILs in various sample preparation procedures and separation methods for the determination of pharmaceuticals in environmental and biological matrices based on liquid-based chromatography (LC, SFC, TLC), gas chromatography (GC) and electromigration techniques (e.g., capillary electrophoresis (CE)). Moreover, the advantages and disadvantages of ILs, which can appear during extraction and separation, will be presented and attention will be given to the criteria to be followed during the selection of ILs for specific applications.

A nanohybrid composed of polyoxotungstate and graphene oxide for dispersive micro solid-phase extraction of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs prior to their quantitation by HPLC

A nanohybrid was prepared from polyoxotungstate anion and graphene oxide (POT/GO) and characterized in terms of porosity by applying Fourier transform infrared and transmission electron microscopy. The nanohybrid was applied as a sorbent for the dispersive micro solid-phase extraction of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) ibuprofen, diclofenac, and naproxen. Different types of sorbents were compared, and the POT/GO nanohybrid was found to have the best adsorption affinity. The NSAIDs were quantified via HPLC with UV detection. Under the optimum conditions, the limits of detection (at an S/N ratio of 3) range between 0.02-0.03 ng.mL^-1, and the linear response ranges extend from 0.08-200 ng.mL^-1, respectively. The relative standard deviations (RSDs) for five replicates at three concentration levels (0.1, 5 and 100 ng.mL^-1) of NSAIDs ranged from 4.1 to 6.1%. The applicability of the method was confirmed by analyzing spiked real water samples, and satisfactory results were obtained, with recoveries between 95.6 and 99.6%. Fabrication of calixarene-grafted bio-polymeric magnetic composites for magnetic solid phase extraction of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in water samples

Calixarene framework functionalized bio-polymeric magnetic composites (MSp-TDI-calix) were synthesized and utilized as magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) sorbent for the extraction of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), namely indoprofen (INP), ketoprofen (KTP), ibuprofen (IBP) and fenoprofen (FNP), from environmental water samples. MSp-TDI-calix was characterized by FT-IR, XRD, FESEM, EDX, VSM and BET analysis, and the results were compared with Sp-TDI and Sp-TDI-calix. To maximize the extraction performance of MSp-TDI-calix decisive MSPE affective parameters such as sorbent amount, extraction time, sample volume, type of organic eluent, volume of organic eluent, desorption time and pH were comprehensively optimized prior to HPLC-DAD determination. The analytical validity of the proposed MSPE method was evaluated under optimized conditions and the following figures of merit were acquired: linearity with good determination coefficient (R² ≥ 0.991) over the concentration range of 0.5–500 µg/L, limits of detection (LODs) ranged from 0.06–0.26 µg/L and limits of quantitation (LOQ) between 0.20–0.89 µg/L. Excellent reproducibility and repeatability under harsh environment with inter-day and intra-day relative standard deviations were obtained in the range of 2.5–3.2% and 2.4–3.9% respectively. The proposed method was successfully applied for analysis of NSAIDs in tap water, drinking water and river water with recovery efficiency ranging from 88.1–115.8% with %RSD of 1.6–4.6%.

Supercritical fluid extraction of papaverine and noscapine from poppy capsules followed by preconcentration with magnetic nano Fe3O4@Cu@diphenylthiocarbazone particles

A novel magnetite adsorbent modified with copper and diphenylthiocarbazone was synthesized and used as a sorbent for magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE) of two opium alkaloids: papaverine and noscapine.
