Abstract
Electrochemiluminescence (ECL) luminophores with wavelength-tunable multicolor emissions are essential for multicolor ECL imaging detection and multiplexed analysis. In this work, silver nanoparticle (Ag NP)-decorated graphitic carbon nitride (g-CN@Ag) nanocomposites were synthesized. The morphology, chemical composition, structure, and ECL property of g-CN@Ag were investigated. The prepared g-CN, g-CN@Ag1, g-CN@Ag5, and g-CN@Ag10 can produce blue, blue-green, chartreuse, and yellow colored ECL emissions, respectively, by using K2S2O8 as the coreagent. The ECL emission wavelength of g-CN@Ag can be regulated from 460 to 565 nm by modulating the content of the immobilized Ag NPs. Then, a multicolor ECL detection array was fabricated by using g-CN, g-CN@Ag1, g-CN@Ag5, and g-CN@Ag10 as four ECL luminophores. Dopamine was detected based on its inhibition effect on the multicolor ECL emissions. The linear range is from 0.1 nM to 1 mM with the lowest detection limit of 44 pM. Then, machine learning-assisted multiparameter concentration prediction of dopamine was further carried out by combining the deep neural network (DNN) algorithm. This work provides a new avenue to regulate the ECL emission wavelength of g-CN by using the metal nanoparticle modification strategy and presents an effective machine learning-assisted multicolor ECL detection strategy for accurate multiparameter quantitative detection.

Abstract
Metal nanoclusters (Me NCs) have become a research hotspot in the field of electrochemiluminescence (ECL) sensing analysis. This is primarily attributed to their excellent luminescent properties and biocompatibility along with their easy synthesis and labeling characteristics. At present, the application of Me NCs in ECL mainly focuses on precious metals, whose high cost, to some extent, limits their widespread application. In this work, Cu NCs with cathode ECL emissions in persulfate (S2O82-) were prepared as signal probes using glutathione as ligands, which exhibited stable luminescence signals and high ECL efficiency. At the same time, CaMnO3 was introduced as a co-reaction promoter to increase the ECL responses of Cu NCs, thereby further expanding their application potential in biochemical analysis. Specifically, the reversible conversion of Mn3+/Mn4+ greatly promoted the generation of sulfate radicals (SO4•-), providing a guarantee for improving the luminescence signals of Cu NCs. Furthermore, a short peptide (NARKFYKGC) was introduced to enable the fixation of antibodies to specific targets, preventing the occupancy of antigen-binding sites (Fab fragments). Therefore, the sensitivity of the biosensor could be significantly enhanced by releasing additional Fab fragments. Considering the approaches discussed above, the constructed biosensor could achieve sensitive detection of CD44 over a broad range (10 fg/mL-100 ng/mL), with an ultralow detection limit of 3.55 fg/mL (S/N = 3), which had valuable implications for the application of nonprecious Me NCs in biosensing analysis.

Abstract
This review article comprehensively discusses the various electrochemical approaches for measuring and detecting oxidative stress biomarkers and enzymes, particularly reactive oxygen/nitrogen species, highly reactive chemical molecules, which are the byproducts of normal aerobic metabolism and can oxidize cellular components such as DNA, lipids, and proteins. First, we address the latest research on the electrochemical determination of reactive oxygen species generating enzymes, followed by detection of oxidative stress biomarkers, and final determination of total antioxidant activity (endogenous and exogenous). Most electrochemical sensing platforms exploited the unique properties of micro- and nanomaterials such as carbon nanomaterials, metal or metal oxide nanoparticles (NPs), conductive polymers and metal-nano compounds, which have been mainly used for enhancing the electrocatalytic response of sensors/biosensors. The performance of the electroanalytical devices commonly measured by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) in terms of detection limit, sensitivity, and linear range of detection is also discussed. This article provides a comprehensive review of electrode fabrication, characterization and evaluation of their performances, which are assisting to design and manufacture an appropriate electrochemical (bio)sensor for medical and clinical applications. The key points such as accessibility, affordability, rapidity, low cost, and high sensitivity of the electrochemical sensing devices are also highlighted for the diagnosis of oxidative stress. Overall, this review brings a timely discussion on past and current approaches for developing electrochemical sensors and biosensors mainly based on micro and nanomaterials for the diagnosis of oxidative stress.

Abstract
In this work, we utilized polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) derivatives as ligands to develop a zinc-based metal-organic framework (Zn-MOF) as an effective detection probe to construct an electrochemiluminescence (ECL) sensor for trenbolone detection. As traditional ECL emitters, PAHs and their derivatives have limited luminescence efficiency because of the aggregation-induced quenching (ACQ) effect. Therefore, Zn-PTC was designed by the coordination of 3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic (PTC) in the MOF to eliminate the ACQ effect. Meanwhile, Zn-PTC formed based on an aromatic ligand possessed the metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) effect, which could transfer the energy of Zn2+ to the aromatic ligand for strong luminescence. The ECL efficiency of Zn-PTC was calculated to be approximately 2.2 times that of the ligand (K4PTC). Second, the Ag@Fe core-shell bimetallic nanocrystal was prepared for efficient activation of persulfate (S2O82-), thereby generating more sulfate radicals (SO4•-) to further promote ECL emission. According to ECL characterizations, UV-vis and fluorescence spectra, and density functional theory calculations, the luminescence and signal amplification mechanisms were investigated. In addition, NKFRGKYKC (NKF) was introduced as an affinity ligand to directionally immobilize the target antibodies, thus releasing specific sites in their Fab fragment to enhance binding activity. Based on the above strategies, the constructed biosensor exhibited high sensitivity, realizing trace detection of TBE with a wide detection range (10 fg/mL-100 ng/mL) and a low detection limit (3.28 fg/mL). This study provided an important reference for sensitive monitoring of steroid pollutants in the environment.

A dual-recognition MIP-ECL sensor based on boric acid functional carbon dots for detection of dopamine. Mikrochim Acta 2022; 189:389. Abstract
We report a molecularly imprinted polymer electrochemiluminescence (MIP-ECL) sensor with dual recognition effects on dopamine (DA). Boric-acid-functionalized carbon dots (B-CDs) with good ECL performance at - 2.0 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) were prepared and immobilized on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE). The MIP was then introduced via electropolymerization using o-phenylenediamine (OPD) as a functional monomer and DA as a template molecule to fabricate the MIP-ECL sensor. The cavities in the MIP after elution were used to capture the target molecular DA. The affinity of boric acid of B-CDs to the cis-diol of DA, as well as the special recognition of MIP, provides dual recognition effects on DA. The selective readsorption of DA onto the sensor leads to the ECL quenching of B-CDs. The quenching effect was used to detect DA from 1.0 × 10-9 to 1.0 × 10-5 mol·L-1 with a detection limit of 2.1 × 10-10 mol·L-1. The dual recognition caused the MIP-ECL sensor exhibiting excellent selectivity and sensitivity toward DA. The sensor was successfully used to determine DA in real samples.

Abstract
In this study, a portable electrochemiluminescence sensor chip was designed for trenbolone (TBE) trace detection in environmental water. First, a stable ECL signal was obtained with low-toxicity 3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic acid (PTCA) as a luminophore and persulfate (S2O82-) as a coreactant. Second, hollow-structured Cu2MoS4 was introduced as a coreaction accelerator to catalyze S2O82- reduction. The reversible conversion of the mixed-valence transition metal ions in Cu2MoS4 (Cu+/Cu2+ and Mo4+/Mo6+) greatly promoted the generation of the sulfate radical (SO4•-). Meanwhile, the special porous structure of Cu2MoS4 possessed a large specific surface area, thus enhancing its catalytic performance. Based on these enhancement mechanisms, a strong ECL signal was acquired, which improved the detection sensitivity of the constructed sensor. Importantly, a microfluidic chip was introduced for sensing detection, thereby improving the practicality of the sensor. The developed sensor chip was miniature and portable, exhibiting high sensitivity for TBE detection with a wide linear range (10 fg/mL-100 ng/mL) and lower detection limit (3.32 fg/mL). This was of great significance for timely and rapid analysis of steroid pollutants in natural water.

Abstract
The electrochemiluminescence (ECL) bioassay is prominently carried out with the involvement of the coreactant. To remove the detrimental effects of the coreactant on the ECL of luminophores, herein, a promising ECL immunoassay strategy with biocompatible nanoparticles as the luminophore is proposed, which involves directly and electrochemically oxidizing the luminophore methionine-capped Au (Met@Au) nanocrystals (NCs) without the participation of any coreactant. Met@Au NCs are a kind of n-type nanoparticles, and they can be electrochemically injected with valence band (VB) holes around +0.80 and +1.10 V (vs Ag/AgCl). The electrochemically injected exogenous VB hole can recombine with the endogenous conduction band electron of Met@Au NCs and eventually bring out two coreactant-free and near-infrared ECL processes around 0.80 V (ECL-1) and 1.10 V (ECL-2). The intensity of coreactant-free ECL is primarily determined by the electrochemical oxidation-induced hole-injection process. ECL-2 is considerably stronger than ECL-1 and can be exploited for determining the carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) in a sandwich immunoassay procedure with a linear range from 0.1 to 50 pg/mL as well as a limit of detection of 0.03 pg/mL (S/N = 3).

Abstract
The photoluminescence, electroluminescence, and electrochemiluminescence from nanocrystals (NCs) have been extensively exploited for both fundamental and applied investigation over two decades, while the understanding of chemiluminescence (CL) from NCs is still far from clear by now. Herein, a general route for triggering CL from NC luminophore is proposed by extensively exploiting the charge transfer between n-type NCs and oxidants. Oxidants, such as K2S2O8, H2O2, KMnO4, and NaClO, can chemically inject the hole onto the valence band (VB) of methionine-capped n-type AuNCs (Met@AuNCs) and enable the occurrence of efficient radiative-charge-recombination between the chemically injected exogenous VB hole and the pre-existed endogenous conduction band (CB) electron, which eventually results in single-color and defect-involved CL with the maximum emission wavelength around 824 nm. The CL of Met@AuNCs/oxidant is qualified for ultrasensitive CL immunoassay in a similar procedure to the biotin-avidin and magnetic separation involved commercial CL immunoassay and exhibits acceptable performance for linearly determining carcinoembryonic antigen from 50 pg/mL to 100 ng/mL with a limit of detection of 10 pg/mL (S/N = 3). This strategy provides a general route to develop nanoparticulate CL luminophores and might eventually enable CL multiplexing assay via extensively exploiting the CL of different wavebands.

Abstract
Metal nanoclusters (MeNCs), composed of a few to hundreds of metal atoms and appropriate surface ligands, have attracted extensive interest in the electrochemiluminescence (ECL) realm owing to their molecule-like optical, electronic, and physicochemical attributes and are strongly anticipated for discrete energy levels, fascinating electrocatalytic activity, and good biocompatibility. Over the past decade, huge efforts have been devoted to the synthesis, properties, and application research of ECL-related MeNCs, and this field is still a subject of heightened concern. Therefore, this perspective aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the recent advances of MeNCs in the ECL domain, mainly covering the emerged ECL available MeNCs, unique chemical and optical properties, and the general ECL mechanisms. Synthesis strategies for desirable ECL performance are further highlighted, and the resulting ECL sensing applications utilizing MeNCs as luminophores, quenchers, and substrates are discussed systematically. Finally, we anticipate the future prospects and challenges in the development of this area.

Abstract
Metal nanoclusters (NCs), including Au, Ag, Cu, Pt, Ni and alloy NCs, have become more and more popular sensor probes with good solubility, biocompatibility, size-dependent luminescence and catalysis. The development of electrochemiluminescent (ECL) and chemiluminescent (CL) analytical methods based on various metal NCs have become research hotspots. To improve ECL and CL performances, many strategies are proposed, from metal core to ligand, from intermolecular electron transfer to intramolecular electron transfer. Combined with a variety of amplification technology, i.e., nanostructure-based enhancement and biological signal amplification, highly sensitive ECL and CL analytical methods are developed. We have summarized the research progresses since 2016. Also, we discuss the current challenges and perspectives on the development of this area.

Mechanistic Insight into a Novel Ultrasensitive Nicotine Assay Base on High-Efficiency Quenching of Gold Nanocluster Cathodic Electrochemiluminescence. Anal Chem 2020; 92:11438-11443. Abstract
Monitoring nicotine concentrations in human fluids is extremely crucial owing to the harmful effect of nicotine on human health. Herein, it is shown that nicotine could quench the cathodic electrochemiluminescence (ECL) of gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) with high efficiency. The ECL quenching mechanism of nicotine was studied in detail using various experimental tools and theoretical calculations. It was concluded that the strongly oxidizing intermediate SO4•-, produced from K2S2O8, could oxidized nicotine, resulting in ECL emission quenching. On the basis of this high-efficiency ECL quenching of the AuNCs/K2S2O8 system, a recyclable, ultrasensitive, and selective ECL sensing platform for nicotine detection was proposed. Even in the absence of any complex signal amplification techniques, the ECL sensor for nicotine detection showed an unprecedentedly low detection limit of 7.0 × 10-13 M (S/N = 3) and a wide linear range over 8 orders of magnitude. Most remarkably, it could be successfully used for nicotine detection in human urine samples. This is expected to promote the investigations and applications on nicotine-related diseases. We believe that the proposed ECL platform can hold great prospects for commercialization in biomedical fields and tobacco industries.

Abstract
In this study, a wavelength-resolved electrochemiluminescence resonance energy transfer (ECL-RET) ratiometric immunosensor from Au nanoparticle functionalized graphite-like carbon nitride nanosheets (Au-g-C3N4) to Au nanoclusters (Au NCs) has been constructed for the first time. At a working voltage of 0 to -1.2 V, Au-g-C3N4 showed a strong cathodic ECL emission with a peak at 460 nm, which overlapped well with the absorption spectra of Au NCs thus stimulating the fluorescence emission of Au NCs at 610 nm. Moreover, within this voltage range, the Au NCs showed no ECL signal; therefore, they would not interfere with the detection of the system. We used cardiac troponin I (cTnI) as an analytical model to construct a sandwich immunosensor based on the ECL-RET ratiometric strategy. By measuring the responses of the ECL460 nm/FL610 nm ratio at different cTnI concentrations, the sensitive detection of cTnI with a wide range of 50 fg mL-1 to 50 ng mL-1 and a low detection limit of 9.73 fg mL-1 can be achieved. This work enriches the wavelength-resolved ECL-RET system and provides an innovative reference for the development of more efficient and sensitive ECL-RET ratiometry.

Abstract
Herein, a novel fluorescent material, boronic acid-functionalized molybdenum disulfide quantum dots (B-MoS2 QDs) produced by an amidation reaction between 3-aminobenzeneboronic acid and previously prepared molybdenum disulfide quantum dots (MoS2 QDs), was prepared to fabricate a rapid and sensitive platform for the quantitative analysis of dopamine. This material exhibits strong fluorescence, excellent salt tolerance and light fastness. In particular, the quantum yield of this material is about 21.1 times that of its fundamental material, MoS2 QDs. Notably, owing to an interesting synergistic effect between the inner filter effect and the aggregation quenching effect, this material was successfully applied for the determination of dopamine in the linear range 0.25-35 μmol L-1 with the detection limit of 0.087 μmol L-1; moreover, B-MoS2 QDs manifested better selectivity in the presence of multiple interferences due to their inert surface. As expected, this proposed material shows satisfactory performance in human serum; thus, the present study exploits a new avenue for the application of functionalized MoS2 QDs in fluorescence sensing.

Abstract
Dopamine (DA), a catecholamine neurotransmitter, is considered to be an important indicator for mental diseases detection in the clinic. In this study, a novel fluorescent sensing platform consisting of the ficin-H2O2-tyramine system for determining DA in cerebrospinal fluids (CSF) was established. The proposed method is based on the fact that ficin, a mimetic peroxidase, can catalyze H2O2 decomposition into OH radicals, which can oxidize non-fluorescent tyramine into fluorescent dityramine. When DA was introduced, DA can compete with tyramine for OH and resulting in the oxidation reaction of tyramine inhibited along with the fluorescence intensity of the system decreased, which provides a unique strategy for fluorescence detection of DA. Under optimal conditions, the fluorescence intensity decreased linearly with the DA level over a wide concentration range from 0.05 to 12.0 μM (R2 = 0.995) with a detection limit of 46 nM (3σ/k). More importantly, the proposed sensing approach exhibits high sensitivity, good selectivity and has been successfully applied to DA sensing in complex biological samples, which made it hold great potential for DA determination in chemical and biological analytical applications.
