New approach for detection of chromate ion by preconcentration with mixed metal hydroxide coupled with fluorescence sensing of copper nanoclusters

Strategies for preparation of chitosan based water-soluble fluorescent probes to detect Cr3+ and Cu2+ ions

The low solubility of chitosan (CS) imposes adverse effects on its application. In this work, one of the aims is to improve the water solubility of CS. By introducing water-soluble side chains to CS, this aim was achieved. Besides, fluorescent moieties were incorporated into the side chains, the fluorescent copolymers were endowed with Cr3+ and Cu2+ ions recognition ability. Firstly, a reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization (RAFT) reagent with naphthalimide units and CC groups was prepared. Water-soluble monomer methyl acrylic acid (MAA) was employed in the RAFT polymerization. Thus, water-soluble polymer with fluorescent unit and -C ≡ C on both ends of the polymer was obtained. They were introduced into CS, and the CS-based fluorescent copolymers were obtained eventually. The amount of MAA introduced could be tuned to obtain three side chains of different lengths. It was found that the more MAA was introduced, the better the solubility of CS-TP was. The detection limits (LOD) of Cr3+ and Cu2+ were 44.6 nM and 54.5 nM, respectively. The detection of Cr3+ and Cu2+ ions is further combined with a mobile APP to realize real-time, portable, and visual detection. And the application in the logic gate, a new detection platform, is prepared.

The highly selective and sensitive fluorescence probe for detection of copper (II) ions and its bioimaging in vitro and vivo

We designed and developed the probe W-3 for detection of Cu2+. The results showed probe can selectively detect Cu2+, accompanied by noticeable color change. The probe can detect the Cu2+ in water samples and drinks based on absorption detection. In addition, the combination of portable test paper and the smartphone platform obtained great convenience for on-site and visual detection of Cu2+, with satisfactory sensitivity and reliability. More importantly, the fluorescence probe W-3 can be used for the detection of Cu2+ in cells and mice. Therefore, the W-3 provided potential chemical tools for detecting Cu2+ in vitro and vivo.

Synthesis of Copper Nanocluster and Its Application in Pollutant Analysis

Copper nanoclusters (Cu NCs) with their inherent optical and chemical advantages have gained increasing attention as a kind of novel material that possesses great potential, primarily in the use of contaminants sensing and bio-imaging. With a focus on environmental safety, this article comprehensively reviews the recent advances of Cu NCs in the application of various contaminants, including pesticide residues, heavy metal ions, sulfide ions and nitroaromatics. The common preparation methods and sensing mechanisms are summarized. The typical high-quality sensing probes based on Cu NCs towards various target contaminants are presented; additionally, the challenges and future perspectives in the development and application of Cu NCs in monitoring and analyzing environmental pollutants are discussed.

Recent Materials Developed for Dispersive Solid Phase Extraction

Solid phase extraction (SPE) is an analytical procedure developed with the purpose of separating a target analyte from a complex sample matrix prior to quantitative or qualitative determination. The purpose of such treatment is twofold: elimination of matrix constituents that could interfere with the detection process or even damage analytical equipment as well as enriching the analyte in the sample so that it is readily available for detection. Dispersive solid phase extraction (dSPE) is a recent development of the standard SPE technique that is attracting growing attention due to its remarkable simplicity, short extraction time and low requirement for solvent expenditure, accompanied by high effectiveness and wide applicability. This review aims to thoroughly survey recently conducted analytical studies focusing on methods utilizing novel, interesting nanomaterials as dSPE sorbents, as well as known materials that have been only recently successfully applied in dSPE techniques, and evaluate their performance and suitability based on comparison with previously reported analytical procedures.

Selective adsorption and determination of hexavalent chromium ions using graphene oxide modified with amino silanes

Novel adsorbents are described for the preconcentration of chromium(VI). Graphene oxide (GO) was modified with various amino silanes containing one, two, or three nitrogen atoms in the molecule. These include 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES), N-(3-trimethoxysilylpropyl)ethylenediamine (TMSPEDA), and N1-(3-trimethoxysilylpropyl)diethylenetriamine (TMSPDETA). The resulting GO derivatives were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (EDXRF). Adsorption studies show that these GO based sorbents are highly selective for Cr(VI) in the presence of Cr(III) at pH 3.5. Although the amino silanes applied in modification of GO contain different numbers of nitrogen atoms, the maximum adsorption capacities of GO derivatives are very similar (13.3-15.1 mg·g-1). Such results are in accordance with spectroscopy studies which show that the amount of amino silanes attached to GO decreases in the order of APTES > TMSPEDA > TMSPDETA. The APTES-modified GO was applied to selective and sensitive extraction of Cr(VI) ions prior to quantitation by low-power EDXRF using the Cr Kα line. The Cr(VI) ions need not be eluted from the solid adsorbent. The method has a 0.17 ng·mL-1 detection limit, and the recovery is 99.7 ± 2.2% at a spiking level of 10 ng·mL-1. The method was successfully applied to the determination of Cr(VI) in water samples.
