Fluorescent iridium nanoclusters for selective determination of chromium(VI)

Plate-Like Colloidal Metal Nanoparticles

The pseudo-two-dimensional (2D) morphology of plate-like metal nanoparticles makes them one of the most anisotropic, mechanistically understood, and tunable structures available. Although well-known for their superior plasmonic properties, recent progress in the 2D growth of various other materials has led to an increasingly diverse family of plate-like metal nanoparticles, giving rise to numerous appealing properties and applications. In this review, we summarize recent progress on the solution-phase growth of colloidal plate-like metal nanoparticles, including plasmonic and other metals, with an emphasis on mechanistic insights for different synthetic strategies, the crystallographic habits of different metals, and the use of nanoplates as scaffolds for the synthesis of other derivative structures. We additionally highlight representative self-assembly techniques and provide a brief overview on the attractive properties and unique versatility benefiting from the 2D morphology. Finally, we share our opinions on the existing challenges and future perspectives for plate-like metal nanomaterials.

Tungsten-based Nanomaterials in the Biomedical Field: A Bibliometric Analysis of Research Progress and Prospects

Tungsten-based nanomaterials (TNMs) with diverse nanostructures and unique physicochemical properties have been widely applied in the biomedical field. Although various reviews have described the application of TNMs in specific biomedical fields, there are still no comprehensive studies that summarize and analyze research trends of the field as a whole. To identify and further promote the development of biomedical TNMs, a bibliometric analysis method is used to analyze all relevant literature on this topic. First, general bibliometric distributions of the dataset by year, country, institute, referenced source, and research hotspots are recognized. Next, a comprehensive review of the subjectively recognized research hotspots in various biomedical fields, including biological sensing, anticancer treatments, antibacterials, and toxicity evaluation, is provided. Finally, the prospects and challenges of TNMs are discussed to provide a new perspective for further promoting their development in biomedical research.

Iridium and IrOx nanoparticles: an overview and review of syntheses and applications

Precious metals are key in various fields of research and precious metal nanomaterials are directly relevant for optics, catalysis, pollution management, sensing, medicine, and many other applications. Iridium based nanomaterials are less studied than metals like gold, silver or platinum. A specific feature of iridium nanomaterials is the relatively small size nanoparticles and clusters easily obtained, e.g. by colloidal syntheses. Progress over the years overcomes the related challenging characterization and it is expected that the knowledge on iridium chemistry and nanomaterials will be growing. Although Ir nanoparticles have been preferred systems for the development of kinetic-based models of nanomaterial formation, there is surprisingly little knowledge on the actual formation mechanism(s) of iridium nanoparticles. Following the impulse from the high expectations on Ir nanoparticles as catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction in electrolyzers, new areas of applications of iridium materials have been reported while more established applications are being revisited. This review covers different synthetic strategies of iridium nanoparticles and provides an in breadth overview of applications reported. Comprehensive Tables and more detailed topic-oriented overviews are proposed in Supplementary Material, covering synthesis protocols, the historical role or iridium nanoparticles in the development of nanoscience and applications in catalysis.

Recent advances in fluorescence anisotropy/polarization signal amplification

Fluorescence anisotropy/polarization is an attractive and versatile technique based on molecular rotation in biochemical/biophysical systems. Traditional fluorescence anisotropy/polarization assays showed relatively low sensitivity for molecule detection, because widespread molecular masses are too small to produce detectable changes in fluorescence anisotropy/polarization value. In this review, we discuss in detail how the potential of fluorescence anisotropy/polarization signal approach considerably expanded through the implementation of mass amplification, recycle the target amplification, fluorescence probes structure-switching amplification, resonance energy transfer amplification, and provide perspectives at future directions and applications.

Development of a fluorescent immunochromatographic assay based on quantum dots for the detection of fleroxacin

Fleroxacin (FLE) is a broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic widely used in animal husbandry, veterinary medicine and aquaculture. Eating animal-derived foods with FLE residues can cause allergies, poisoning or drug resistance. The water-soluble QDs (CdSe/ZnS) and anti-FLE monoclonal antibody (mAb) were used to prepare a fluorescent probe by the method of N-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-N'-ethylcarbodimide hydrochloride (EDC) activation. The fluorescent probe was characterized by dynamic light scattering (DLS). The better bioactivity and stability of the fluorescent probe was obtained under the pH value of 8.0, the molecule molar ratio of EDC (1 : 2000) and anti-FLE monoclonal antibodies (1 : 10). The control line (C line) and test line (T line) of a nitrocellulose (NC) filter membrane were sprayed with SPA (0.05 mg mL-1) and FLE-OVA (1.4 mg mL-1) solutions with optimal concentration, respectively. A novel method of fluorescent immunochromatographic assay based on quantum dots (QDs-ICA) in this work exhibited good accuracy, reproductivity and excellent specificity under the optimal experimental conditions. Compared with the traditional method for the visual detection of FLE, the developed QDs-ICA can successfully determine FLE residues in pork meat with a better cut-off value of 2.5 ng mL-1. The QDs-ICA could be adapted for the rapid preliminary detection of FLE residues in pork meat for the first time.

Immunoassays for rapid mycotoxin detection: state of the art

The widespread presence of mycotoxins in nature not only poses a huge health risk to people in terms of food but also causes incalculable losses to the agricultural economy. As a rapidly developing technology in recent years, the mycotoxin immunoassay technology has approached or even surpassed the traditional chromatography technology in some aspects. Using this approach, the lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) has attracted the interest of researchers due to its user-friendly operation, short time consumption, little interference, low cost, and ability to process a large number of samples at the same time. This paper provides an overview of the immunogens commonly used for mycotoxins, the development of antibodies, and the use of gold nanoparticles, quantum dots, carbon nanoparticles, enzymes, and fluorescent microsphere labeling materials for the construction of LFIAs to improve detection sensitivity. The analytical performance, detection substrates, detection limits or detection ranges of LFIA for mycotoxins have been listed in recent years. Finally, we describe the future outlook for the field, predicting that portable mobile detection devices and simultaneous quantitative detection of multiple mycotoxins is one of the important directions for future development.

A highly sensitive immunofluorescence sensor based on bicolor upconversion and magnetic separation for simultaneous detection of fumonisin B1 and zearalenone

Mycotoxins cause significant harm to human health, so it is imperative to develop a highly sensitive and easy-to-operate method for the detection of mycotoxins. Herein, a fluorescence-based magnetic separation immunoassay for simultaneous detection of mycotoxins fumonisin B1 and zearalenone is established. The method employed high fluorescent upconversion-nanoparticles(UCNPs) conjugated with biotinylated antigens as upconversion fluoroscent probes. Magnetic nanoparticles(MNPs) immobilized with monoclonal antibodies are used as immune-capture probes. Highly sensitive detection of FB1 and ZEN was achieved based on the luminescence properties of UCNPs and the separation effects of MNPs. The results showed a robust linear correlation between the enhanced fluorescence emission intensity and the logarithmic concentrations of FB1 and ZEN under the optimal conditions (R²(FB1) = 0.9965, R²(ZEN) = 0.9976), and the linear ranges were 0.05-5 ng mL^-1. Furthermore, the limits of detection (LOD) were 0.016 ng mL^-1 for FB1 and 0.012 ng mL^-1 for ZEN. The standard addition method was used to determine the content of FB1 and ZEN in the samples to evaluate the accuracy of the process. The average recoveries were 89.48% to 113.69% and 85.97% to 113.82%, respectively. Compared with the other five mycotoxins, this method had high selectivity. It is expected that the multi-component simultaneous detection can be further realized by using the multicolor labeling characteristics of UCNPs.

Cross β-alkylation of primary alcohols catalysed by DMF-stabilized iridium nanoparticles

A simple method for the cross β-alkylation of linear alcohols with benzyl alcohols in the presence of DMF-stabilized iridium nanoparticles was developed. The nanoparticles were prepared in one-step and thoroughly characterized. Furthermore, the optimum reaction conditions have a wide substrate scope and excellent product selectivity.

'Turn-off' fluorescence strategy for determination of hexavalent chromium ions based on copper nanoclusters

Cu nanoclusters (CuNCs) capped by tannic acid (TA) (CuNCs@TA) can be used as a highly sensitive fluorescent probe for Cr(VI) detection. Therefore, a fluorescence detection method for Cr(VI) can be established according to the fluorescence quenching of CuNCs@TA that is caused immediately after the addition of Cr(VI). The fluorescence quenching efficiency of CuNCs@TA was linearly correlated with Cr(VI) concentration within the range 0.03-60 μM, and the detection limit for Cr(VI) was 5 nM. This method was demonstrated to be suitable for detecting Cr(VI) in actual water samples. We found that sodium thiosulfate (ST) can redox with Cr(VI) and therefore restore the fluorescence of CuNCs@TA. The mechanism of CuNCs@TA fluorescence quenching and enhancement by Cr(VI) and ST was investigated in detail. The 'turn-on' fluorescent sensor is of practical significance and has broad application prospects.

An improved structure-switch aptamer-based fluorescent Pb2+ biosensor utilizing the binding induced quenching of AMT to G-quadruplex

An improved aptamer-based fluorescent Pb²⁺ biosensor utilizing the binding induced quenching of AMT to G-quadruplex has been rationally designed with a LOD of 3.6 nM. The utility of the developed biosensor was demonstrated by the successful detection of Pb²⁺ in real complex clinical samples with satisfactory recovery and good reproducibility.

Highly sensitive detection of rutin in pharmaceuticals and human serum using ITO electrodes modified with vertically-ordered mesoporous silica–graphene nanocomposite films

A vertically-ordered silica–graphene nanocomposite film modified transparent ITO electrode was prepared by a one-step electrodeposition method for antifouling detection of rutin in pharmaceuticals and human serum.

Cysteamine-capped gold-copper nanoclusters for fluorometric determination and imaging of chromium(VI) and dopamine

Highly emissive cysteamine-capped gold-copper bimetallic nanoclusters (CA-AuCu NCs) with a quantum yield of 18% were synthesized via one-pot anti-galvanic reduction. The CA-AuCu NCs were characterized by HR-TEM, XPS, FTIR, MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, DLS, and zeta potential analyses. The NCs are shown to be viable fluorescent probes for Cr(VI) ions and dopamine (DA) via quenching of the blue fluorescence, typically measured at excitation/emission wavelengths of 350/436 nm. During DA recognition, a dark brown color appears, which is distinguishable from that of Cr(VI) detection. The aggregation induced quenching due to electron transfer was demonstrated by photoluminescence, HR-TEM, FTIR, DLS, and zeta potential interrogations. In buffer of pH 7, response is linear in the 0.2 ~ 100 μM for Cr(VI) and from 0.4 ~ 250 μM for DA. The respective detection limits are 80 and 135 nM. The method was applied to the determination of both Cr(VI) and DA in (spiked) tap, lake and sea water, and in human urine samples. The low toxicity of CA-AuCu NCs was validated by the MTT assay, and their responses to Cr(VI) ions and DA was also proven by Raw 264.7 cell imaging. Chromium speciation by isophthalic acid-doped polymer dots as sensitive and selective fluorescent probes

Hexavalent chromium is a known carcinogen, among all species of chromium ions, for the respiratory tract in humans. In the present work, a new facile probe is developed for rapid and sensitive determination of Cr(VI) based on utilizing highly fluorescent conjugated poly[(9,9-dioctylfluorenyl-2,7-diyl)-alt-co-(1,4-benzo-(2,1',3) thiadiazole)] (PFBT) polymer dots (PDs). The PDs are easily functionalized by doping of isophthalic acid (IPA) into the target PDs during a single step preparation. The prepared PDs with an average diameter of 30 nm illustrated a strong fluorescence with an emission peak centered at 530 nm (photo-excited at 480 nm). The strong fluorescence of PDs is selectively and significantly quench with Cr(VI), while it does not change by Cr(III) ion and, thus, can facilitate a chromium speciation process. The proposed mechanism is an inner filter effect (IFE) mechanism, in which the absorption bands of Cr(IV) overlaps with the emission and excitation bands of the modified PDs. The prepared PDs revealed a good linear relationship from 0.1 to 1000 μmol L^-1 for Cr(VI) with a detection limit of 0.03 μmol L^-1, which further used to track the Cr distribution in water samples. Finally, the IPA-doped PDs with excellent optical properties, biocompatibility, and high quantum yield showed promising potential in tracking Cr species and specifying of different Cr ions inside the human cells, which opening a new door toward getting a better insight into the cell function and metabolism in the presence of heavy metal ions, and especially chromium ions.

Organosilane-functionalized carbon quantum dots and their applications to "on-off-on" fluorometric determination of chromate and ascorbic acid, and in white light-emitting devices

Organosilane-functionalized carbon quantum dots (Si-CQDs) were synthesized by reacting glucosamine and 3-[2-(2-aminoethylamino)ethylamino]propyl-trimethoxysilane in acetone. The surface morphology, crystal structure, functional groups, elemental composition, and optical properties of the Si-CQDs were characterized using TEM (HRTEM), XRD, FT-IR, XPS, UV-vis absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy. They show that N-containing groups including C=N and C-N, and Si-containing groups including Si-O-C and Si-O-Si have been formed on the surface of Si-CQDs. The element doping and surface functionalization of Si-CQDs endow their novel chemical, physical and optical properties. The Si-CQDs dispersed in acetone are almost monodisperse with an average particle diameter of 3.6 nm. The Si-CQDs dispersed in acetone display blue fluorescence (excitation/emission maxima of 380/460 nm). In contrast, the solid-state Si-CQDs exhibited yellow fluorescence (with excitation/emission maxima of 470/595 nm). The fluorescence emission spectra of acetone-suspended Si-CQDs are concentration-dependent, and the emission peak becomes red-shifted as the concentration is increased. The Si-CQDs are sensitive and selective fluorescent "on off on" nanoprobes for chromate [Cr(VI)] and ascorbic acid (AA). Fluorescence is quenched by Cr(VI) via an inner filter effect from the absorption of Si-CQDs excitation at 380 nm by Cr(VI). Upon addition of AA, fluorescence is restored because of reduction of Cr(VI) by AA. Under optimal conditions (excitation/emission wavelength of 380/460 nm), the response is linear in the 0.4-160 μM Cr(VI) concentration range, and the detection limit is 34 nM. The respective data for AA are 1-80 μM and 84.6 nM. The practical use of the nanoprobe for Cr(VI) determination in real river water samples is also demonstrated successfully. Their concentration-dependent fluorescence, good thermal stability and self-crosslinking behavior also make the Si-CQDs a candidate material for white light-emitting diodes that displays color conversion and can act as an encapsulation layer in a blue light-emitting diode (LED) chip. A label-free nano-probe for sequential and quantitative determination of Cr(VI) and ascorbic acid in real samples based on S and N dual-doped carbon dots

A fluorescent sulfur and nitrogen dual-doped carbon dots (S,N-CDs) was prepared by a simple and one-step acid-base neutralization and exothermic carbonization method. Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) could effectively quench the fluorescence of S,N-CDs based on inner filter effect (IFE) and dynamic quenching, whereas ascorbic acid (AA) could recover the fluorescence of S,N-CDs/Cr(VI) because of IFE weakening. So an "on-off-on" and label-free nano-probe consecutive determination of Cr(VI) and AA was constructed. This nano-probe system demonstrated excellent selectivity and sensitivity to Cr(VI) and AA with linear range of 0.065-198 μmol/L (3.38-10,296 μg/L) and 6.6-892 μmol/L (1.16-157 mg/L), respectively. Meanwhile, the as-prepared S,N-CDs possess low toxicity and could be used for multi-color cell imaging in SMMC 7721 cells. More importantly, this nano-probe was successfully employed for detection of Cr(VI) in tap water and AA in food samples. In view of its simple detection condition, rapid response, wide linear range, low detection limit and inexpensive instrument, the as-constructed nano-probe system could have a wide range of potential application, including water quality monitoring and evaluation, food inspection and testing and biomedical analysis.

A N,N-dimethylformamide protected rhodium nanocluster with engrossing optical properties and its application

Here, we present the synthesis and characterization of a new N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) protected rhodium nanocluster (Rh NC) and its interesting optical properties. These small clusters are emissive and exhibit inhomogeneous broadening. The origin of the inhomogeneous broadening and emission behavior were investigated through detailed photo-physical studies. In this study, we demonstrated that the charge transfer from ligand to metal (DMF to Rh) was the source of the emission. Interactions between the polar DMF protected Rh NC and the solvent in the ground state generate inhomogeneous broadening. We probed the emission behavior for the detection of toxic metal ions. Photo-physical studies established the static mechanism of this sensing behavior.
