Recent advances in metal-organic frameworks for adsorption of common aromatic pollutants

Advanced Materials Design for Adsorption of Toxic Substances in Cigarette Smoke

Cigarettes, despite being economically important legal consumer products, are highly addictive and harmful, particularly to the respiratory system. Tobacco smoke is a complex mixture containing over 7000 chemical compounds, 86 of which are identified to have "sufficient evidence of carcinogenicity" in either animal or human tests. Thus, tobacco smoke poses a significant health risk to humans. This article focuses on materials that help reduce the levels of major carcinogens in cigarette smoke; these include nicotine, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, tobacco-specific nitrosamines, hydrogen cyanide, carbon monoxide, and formaldehyde. Specifically, the research progress on adsorption effects and mechanisms of advanced materials such as cellulose, zeolite, activated carbon, graphene, and molecularly imprinted polymers are highlighted. The future trends and prospects in this field are also discussed. Notably, with advancements in supramolecular chemistry and materials engineering, the design of functionally oriented materials has become increasingly multidisciplinary. Certainly, several advanced materials can play a critical role in reducing the harmful effects of cigarette smoke. This review aims to serve as an insightful reference for the design of hybrid and functionally oriented advanced materials.

Tetracycline hydrochloride degradation by activation of peroxymonosulfate with lanthanum copper Ruddlesden-Popper perovskite oxide: Performance and mechanism

ABO₃-type perovskite oxides have been regarded as a kind of potential catalyst for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. But some limitations such as specific pH conditions and coexisting ion interference restrict its practical application. Herein, a lanthanum copper Ruddlesden-Popper perovskite oxide (La₂CuO₄) was successfully synthesized through the sol-gel process and applied in the activation of PMS. And for the first time the La₂CuO₄/PMS system was used for tetracycline hydrochloride (TC-HCl) degradation. Results showed that La₂CuO₄ was a potential PMS activation catalyst in the removal of antibiotics. At optimized condition (0.2 g/L catalysts, 1 mM PMS, pH₀ 6.9), 96.05% of TC-HCl was removed in 30 min. In experiments of debugging control conditions, over a wide pH range of 3-11, more than 90% of TC-HCl can be removed. In the natural water treatment process, TC-HCl removal rates of about 84.2% and 70.3% were obtained in tap water and River water, respectively. According to the reusability and stability tests and the results of FTIR and XPS analysis, La₂CuO₄ had high structural and chemical stability. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) suggested that the active species including ·OH, SO₄^-· and ¹O₂ were detected in degradation reaction. Finally, reasonable reaction mechanisms and possible degradation pathways of TC-HCl were proposed. These results indicate that La₂CuO₄ can act as a potential catalyst for PMS activation to degrade TC-HCl in water.

Highly efficient degradation of reactive black KN-B dye by ultraviolet light responsive ZIF-8 photocatalysts with different morphologies

Zeolitic imidazolate framework ZIF-8, a type of metal-organic framework, has diverse applications in multiple catalytic fields due to its outstanding properties. Herein, ZIF-8 photocatalysts with three different morphologies (dodecahedral, pitaya-like, and leaf-like) are successfully synthesized under ambient conditions from zinc salts by altering the volume ratio of methanol and water used as a solvent. The as-synthesized ZIFs have high crystallinity with distinct BET surface areas. The experiments indicate that the ZIFs have high photocatalytic efficiency, in which the leaf-like structure (ZIF-8-F3) is the most efficient in the degradation of reactive black KN-B dye (RB5) under 365 nm UV irradiation. This is due to the efficient inhibition of electron-hole recombination or the higher migration of charge carriers in ZIF-8-F3, thus producing more reactive oxygen species, resulting in greater photocatalytic efficiency. At pH = 11, more than 95% of RB5 is degraded within 2 hours when using 1.0 g L^-1 of ZIF-8-F3. Besides, the photocatalytic and kinetic performances of ZIF-8-F3 are also investigated by optimizing the pH, initial RB5 concentration, and dosage of the used catalyst. These ZIF-8-F3 plates have been shown to be a promising material with high photostability and effective reusability, beneficial to various potential applications in environmental remediation issues.

Development of a Needle Trap Device Packed with HKUST-1 Sorbent for Sampling and Analysis of BTEX in Air

In this study, we developed a needle trap device packed with HKUST-1 (Cu-based metal-organic framework) for the sampling and analysis of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX) in ambient air for the first time. The HKUST-1 was synthesized via the electrochemical process. Afterwards, the adsorbent was packed into 22 gauge needles. To provide the different concentrations of BTEX, the syringe pump was connected to the glass chamber to inject a specific rate of the BTEX compounds. Design-expert software (version 7) was used to optimize the analytical parameters including breakthrough volume, desorption conditions and sampling conditions. The best desorption conditions were achieved at 548 K for 6 min, and the best sampling conditions were determined at 309 K of sampling temperature and 20 % of relative humidity. According to the results, the limit of quantification (LOQ) and limit of detection (LOD) of the developed needle trap device (NTD) were in the range of 0.52–1.41 and 0.16–0.5 mg/m3, respectively. In addition, the repeatability and reproducibility of the method were calculated to be in the range of 5.5–13.2 and 5.3–12.3 %, respectively. The analysis of needles stored in the refrigerator (>277 K) and room temperature (298 K) showed that the NTD can store the BTEX analytes for at least 10 and 6 days, respectively. Our findings indicated that the NTD packed with HKUST-1 sorbent can be used as a trustworthy and useful technique for the determination of BTEX in air.

Recent Development in Coordination Compounds as a Sensor for Cyanide Ions in Biological and Environmental Segments

Rapid detection of toxic ions has taken great attention in the last few decades due to its importance in maintaining a greener environment for human beings. The extreme toxicity of cyanide (CN-) ions is a great environmental concern as its continued industrial use generates interest in facile and sensitive methods for CN- ions detection. Since CN- ions act as a ligand in coordination chemistry which rapidly coordinates with suitable metals and forms complexes, this ability was mainly explored in its detection. It also attacks the central metal in coordination compounds and gives a fluorimetric response. Coordination compounds behave as a sensor for the detection of important ions like CN- ions and have gained great attention due to their facile synthesis, multianalyte detection, clear detection and low detection limit. Recently, considerable efforts have been devoted to the detection and quantification of hazardous multianalyte using a single probe. Cu2+ complexes are the main complexes used for CN- ions detection; however, the complexes of many other metals are also used as sensors. Four basic types of interaction have been discussed in coordination compound sensors for CN- detection. The performances of different sensors are compared with one another and the sensors which have the lowest detection limit are highlighted. This review comprises the progress made by coordination compounds as sensors for the detection of CN- ions in the last six years (2015-2021). To the best of our knowledge, there is no review on coordination compounds as a sensor for CN- ions during this period. [Figure: see text].

Recent Advances in the Application and Mechanism of Carbon Dots/Metal-Organic Frameworks Hybrids in Photocatalysis and the Detection of Environmental Pollutants

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of crystalline porous materials with simple synthesis conditions, large specific surface area, structural diversity, and a wide range of interesting properties. The integration of MOFs with other materials can provide new multifunctional composites that exhibit both component properties and new characteristics. In recent years, the integration of carbon dots (CDs) into MOFs to form composites has shown improved optical properties and fascinating new characteristics. This review focuses on the design and synthesis strategies of CDs@MOFs composites (including pore-confined synthesis, in situ encapsulation, post-synthesis modification and impregnation method) and their recent research progress in photocatalysis and detection of environmental pollutants. Both the achievements and problems are evaluated and proposed, and the opportunities and challenges of CDs@MOF composite are discussed.

Development of Amine-Functionalized Metal-Organic Frameworks Hollow Fiber Mixed Matrix Membranes for CO2 and CH4 Separation: A Review

CO2 separation from raw natural gas can be achieved through the use of the promising membrane-based technology. Polymeric membranes are a known method for separating CO2 but suffer from trade-offs between its permeability and selectivity. Therefore, through the use of mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) which utilizes inorganic or hybrid fillers such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) in polymeric matrix, the permeability and selectivity trade-off can be overcome and possibly surpass the Robeson Upper Bounds. In this study, various types of MOFs are explored in terms of its structure and properties such as thermal and chemical stability. Next, the use of amine and non-amine functionalized MOFs in MMMs development are compared in order to investigate the effects of amine functionalization on the membrane gas separation performance for flat sheet and hollow fiber configurations as reported in the literature. Moreover, the gas transport properties and various challenges faced by hollow fiber mixed matrix membranes (HFMMMs) are discussed. In addition, the utilization of amine functionalization MOF for mitigating the challenges faced is included. Finally, the future directions of amine-functionalized MOF HFMMMs are discussed for the fields of CO2 separation.

La/LaF3 co-modified MIL-53(Cr) as an efficient adsorbent for the removal of tetracycline

Chromium based metal-organic framework (MIL-53(Cr)) has enormous potential in the removal of organic contaminants from aqueous solutions due to its outstanding water stability, whereas its poor adsorption capacity limits the application. In this study, La/LaF₃-MIL-53(Cr) was successfully synthesized by taking the advantages of La doping and LaF₃ encapsulation with one-step hydrothermal method. Diverse analysis tools were utilized to verify that La not only existed in the framework, but also was loaded in the pores in the form of LaF₃. The adsorption experiment results demonstrated that 0.3-La/LaF₃-MIL-53(Cr) exhibited significantly improved adsorption capacity by four times compared with the pristine MIL-53(Cr) material. XPS and FTIR revealed that the affinity of La to tetracycline was significantly stronger than that of Cr and the excellent dispersion of LaF₃ in the material may also be the cause of the increase in adsorption capacity. This study described a simple method to combine two different forms of modification and the modified material was potential for tetracycline adsorption.

Monodispersed mesoporous SiO2@metal-organic framework (MSN@MIL-101(Fe)) composites as sorbent for extraction and preconcentration of phytohormones prior to HPLC-DAD analysis

The monodispersed mesoporous SiO₂@metal-organic framework (MSN@MIL-101(Fe)) composites were prepared by grafting MSN-NH₂ onto MIL-101(Fe) particles with a solvothermal method. The adsorption ability of the composites was greatly improved compared to that of pristine MSNs or MIL-101(Fe) for phytohormones (Phys). The MSN@MIL-101(Fe) composites were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, energy dispersive spectrometer, and mapping analysis. Using MSN@MIL-101(Fe) composites as sorbent, a dispersive solid-phase extraction procedure (dSPE) was developed to extract three endogenous Phys (abscisic acid (ABA), indole-3-aceticacid (IAA), and indole-3-butyric acid (IBA)) and two exogenous Phys (1-naphthylacetic acid (1-NAA) and 2-naphthylacetic acid (2-NAA)) prior to HPLC-DAD analysis. The experimental parameters including sample volume, sorbent amount, adsorption time, adsorption pH, desorption time, and desorption solvent on extraction efficiency were optimized and evaluated. Under optimized conditions, the working range of 0.08 to 0.45 ng mL^-1 with enrichment factors from 144 to 207 were achieved. The linear range is 0.75-200 ng mL^-1 for IAA, 0.20-200 ng mL^-1 for ABA, and 1.0-200 ng mL^-1 for IBA, 1-NAA, and 2-NAA. With MSN@MIL-101(Fe) as sorbent for extraction of Phys and determination by HPLC-DAD, two endogenous Phys (IAA and ABA) were detected from mung bean sprouts which were made in a laboratory, and the results were further confirmed by high-resolution mass spectrometry. The composites can be applied to extract other small molecules, which have similar chemical structures with Phys in biological, environmental, and food samples. Layered porous organic frameworks as a novel adsorbent for the solid phase extraction of chlorophenols prior to their determination by HPLC-DAD

A layered porous organic framework (L-POF) with high surface area and porous volume was used as a novel adsorbent for adsorption of chlorophenols (CPs). The L-POF showed much higher adsorption capacity for four CPs (2-CP, 3-CP, 2,3-CP, 2,4-CP) compared with corresponding amorphous POF and some commercial adsorbents. Then, an L-POF-based solid-phase extraction method combined with high-performance liquid chromatography for analyzing CPs at the wavelength of 280 nm in water and honey samples was established. Under the optimum conditions, four CPs exhibited good linearity in the range 0.10-80.0 ng mL^-1 for water and 2-400 ng g^-1 for honey samples with determination coefficient r² > 0.996. The method has low limits of detection of 0.03-0.10 ng mL^-1 for water and 0.5-1.0 ng g^-1 for honey samples. The method presented satisfactory precision and accuracy with relative standard deviations ≤ 7.8% and recoveries of 80-115%. High enrichment factors of 123-190 for water and 63-97 for honey were obtained. The validated method was successfully used to determine CPs in water and honey samples. The L-POF also displayed prominent adsorption performance for many other dyes and organic contaminants. This suggests that it can be an ideal candidate as adsorbent for wide application in separation and analysis. Graphical Abstract.

Electrochemical determination of Salmonella typhimurium by using aptamer-loaded gold nanoparticles and a composite prepared from a metal-organic framework (type UiO-67) and graphene

An aptamer based assay is described for the determination of Salmonella typhimurium (S.typhimurium). A metal-organic framework-graphene composite of type UiO-67/GR is used as the substrate, and an aptamer-gold nanoparticles-horseradish peroxidase (Apt-AuNP-HRP) conjugate the signal amplification probe. A phosphate-terminal and partially complementary DNA (cDNA) of the aptamer is covalently bound to UiO-67/GR via the chemical complexation between phosphate and Zr-OH groups of UiO-67, and then S. typhimurium and cDNA will compete for the binding sites. The binding of Apt-AuNP-HRP to S.typhimurium leads to the formation of strong conjugates. The unbound signal probes then attach to the surface of a glassy carbon electrode via hybridization with cDNA. This generates a large current response (best measured at a potential as low as -0.02 V vs. saturated calomel electrode) under the catalytic action of HRP on the H₂O₂-hydroquinone system. Under the optimal conditions, the differential pulse voltammetric signal decreases linearly in the 2 × 10¹ - 2 × 10⁸ cfu·mL^-1 S.typhimurium concentration range, with a lower detection limit of 5 cfu·mL^-1 (based on S/N = 3). The method was successfully applied to the detection of S. typhimurium in spiked milk samples. Metal-organic frameworks for the sorption of acetone and isopropanol in exhaled breath of diabetics prior to quantitation by gas chromatography

A method is described for non-invasive glucose monitoring of diabetics by means of breath analysis. The metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) ZIF-7, UiO-66 and MOF-5 were chosen as sorbents in packed tubes for sampling and preconcentration of acetone and isopropanol which are established diabetes biomarkers. The MOF UiO-66 was found to be the most appropriate sorbent. Following thermal desorption, acetone and isopropanol where quantified by GC. The method has low limits of detection (0.79-0.84 μg·L^-1) and wide linear ranges (5-2000 μg·L^-1). It is assumed that the good performance of UiO-66 as a sorbent results from its large surface area and unique porous structure, and from van der Waals interactions. The relative standard deviation for six replicate cycles of sampling and preconcentration using one 50 mg UiO-66 packed tube ranged between 2.3 and 6.7% for intra-day assays, and from 2.7 to 4.3% for inter-day assays. A tube packed with 50 mg of UiO-66 packed tube can be used in over 120 cycles of adsorption/desorption without significant loss of collection efficiency. The GC method has been applied for the analysis of diabetic breath samples, and the recoveries from spiked samples ranged from 89.1 to 107.6%. Magnetic fiber headspace solid-phase microextraction coupled to GC-MS for the extraction and quantitation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

A technique was developed for magnetic fiber headspace-solid phase microextraction (MF-HS-SPME) of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The efficiency of the extraction of a steel SPME fiber coated with an aminoethyl-functionalized SBA-15 (Santa Barbara Amorphous 15; a nanoporous sorbent) is substantially improved after its magnetization during HS-SPME. The effects of magnetic field strength, extraction temperature, extraction time, moisture content of the sample, desorption time and desorption temperature were optimized using a simplex method. The application of a moderately strong magnetic field to the fiber results in up to 135% increase in the extraction efficiency and wider linear dynamic ranges. The PAHs (specifically naphthalene, acenaphthene, fluorene, anthracene, phenanthrene, fluoranthene and pyrene) were then quantified by GC-MS analysis. Comparison of an electromagnet and a permanent magnet indicated the superior effect of the permanent magnet for the target analytes due to the Ohmic heating of the magnetic coil and its negative effect on the extraction of some of the PAHs. The limits of detections of the PAHs are between 0.17 to 0.57 ng g^-1 by using the electromagnet, and between 0.10 and 0.32 ng g^-1 for the permanent magnet. Relative standard deviations of 2.9 to 7.6% were obtained for six replicated analyses of the analytes. The method was applied to some polluted soil samples, and satisfactory results were obtained. A magnetic covalent aromatic polymer as an efficient and recyclable adsorbent for phenylurea herbicides

A magnetic covalent aromatic polymer (Fe₃O₄-NH₂-CAP) was synthesized by grinding a covalent aromatic polymer (CAP) and amino-functionalized magnetic nanoparticles (Fe₃O₄-NH₂ NPs). The CAP was prepared by a Friedel-Crafts reaction between biphenyl and 1,3,5-benzenetricarbonyl trichloride. The interaction in the Fe₃O₄-NH₂-CAP is based on hydrogen bond formation between the carbonyl groups in the CAP and the amino groups in the Fe₃O₄-NH₂ NPs. The adsorbent inherits the advantages of the CAP and also has the superior magnetic property of the Fe₃O₄ NPs. The adsorbent was applied to magnetic solid-phase extraction of six phenylurea herbicides (metoxuron, monuron, chlortoluron, isoproturon, monolinuron, buturon) from soil and water samples. Following elution with 600 μL methanol, the herbicides were quantified by HPLC. The calibration plots are linear in the 1.00-100 ng g^-1 herbicide concentration ranges in case of spiked soil samples, and in the 0.10-40 ng mL^-1 concentration range for spiked water samples. The limits of detection range from 0.3 to 0.5 ng g^-1 (soil) and from 0.01 to 0.03 ng mL^-1 (water), with relative standard deviations of <8.0% and < 6.9%, respectively.
