A hybrid material composed of multiwalled carbon nanotubes and MoSe2 nanorods as a sorbent for ultrasound-assisted solid-phase extraction of lead(II) and copper(II)

Electrochemical Detection of Melphalan in Biological Fluids Using a g-C3N4@ND-COOH@MoSe2 Modified Electrode Complemented by Molecular Docking Studies with Cellular Tumor Antigen P53

Melphalan (Mel) is a potent alkylating agent utilized in chemotherapy treatments for a diverse range of malignancies. The need for its accurate and timely detection in pharmaceutical preparations and biological samples is paramount to ensure optimized therapeutic efficacy and to monitor treatment progression. To address this critical need, our study introduced a cutting-edge electrochemical sensor. This device boasts a uniquely modified electrode crafted from graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4), decorated with activated nanodiamonds (ND-COOH) and molybdenum diselenide (MoSe2), and specifically designed to detect Mel with unparalleled precision. Our rigorous testing employed advanced techniques such as cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry. The outcomes were promising; the sensor consistently exhibited a linear response in the range of 0.5 to 12.5 μM. Even more impressively, the detection threshold was as low as 0.03 μM, highlighting its sensitivity. To further enhance our understanding of Mel's biological interactions, we turned to molecular docking studies. These studies primarily focused on Mel's interaction dynamics with the cellular tumor antigen P53, revealing a binding affinity of -5.0 kcal/mol. A fascinating observation was made when Mel was covalently conjugated with nanodiamond-COOH (ND-COOH). This conjugation resulted in a binding affinity that surged to -10.9 kcal/mol, clearly underscoring our sensor's superior detection capabilities. This observation also reinforced the wisdom behind incorporating ND-COOH in our electrode design. In conclusion, our sensor not only stands out in terms of sensitivity but also excels in selectivity and accuracy. By bridging electrochemical sensing with computational insights, our study illuminates Mel's intricate behavior, driving advancements in sensor technology and potentially revolutionizing cancer therapeutic strategies.

Use of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) in analytical sample preparation applications

Since the discovery of graphene, nano-sized two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) such as MoS2, MoSe2, MoTe2, NbS2, NbSe2, WS2, WSe2, TaS2 and TaSe2, which have been classified as next-generation nanomaterials resembling graphene (G) have complementary basic properties with those of graphene in terms of their practical applications. TMDs are attracting great attention due to their attractive physical, chemical and electronic properties. Despite being overshadowed by graphene in terms of frequency of use, TMDs have been used frequently in many areas in recent years instead of carbon-based materials such as graphene (G), graphene oxide (GO), carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and nanodiamonds (NDs). It is seen that the first and frequent uses of TMDs, which are classified as new generation materials, are in the fields of catalysis, electronic applications, hydrogen production processes and energy storage, but it has been used as an adsorbent in sample preparation techniques in recent years. Similar to graphene, layers of TMDs are held together by weak van der Waals interactions. The sandwiched layers of TMDs provide sufficient and effective interlayer spaces so that foreign molecules, ions and atoms can easily enter these spaces between the layers. Intermolecular interactions increase with the entry of different materials into these spaces, and thus, high activity, adsorption capacity and efficiency are obtained in adsorption-based analytical sample preparation methods. Although there are about 35 research articles using TMDs, which are classified as promising materials in analytical sample preparation techniques, no review studies have been found. This review, which was designed with this awareness, contains important informations on the properties of metal dichalcogenides, their production methods and their use in analytical sample preparation techniques.

Carbon nanotube-wastewater treatment nexus: Where are we heading to?

Water treatment is crucial in solving the rising people's appetite for water and global water shortages. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have considerable promise for water treatment because of their adjustable and distinctive arbitrary, physical, as well as chemical characteristics. This illustrates the benefits and risks of integrating CNT into the traditional water treatment resource. Due to their outstanding adsorbent ability and chemical and mechanical properties, CNTs have gained global consideration in environmental applications. The desalination and extraction capability of CNT were improved due to chemical or physical modifications in pure CNTs by various functional groups. The CNT-based composites have many benefits, such as antifouling performance, high selectivity, and increased water permeability. Nevertheless, their full-scale implementations are still constrained by their high costs. Functionalized CNTs and their promising nanocomposites to eliminate contaminants are advised for marketing and extensive water/wastewater treatment.

Poly (deep eutectic solvents) as a new class of sustainable sorbents for solid phase extraction: application for preconcentration of Pb (II) from food and water samples

A new class of polymeric sorbents based on deep eutectic solvents (DESs) is introduced. These materials are obtained from simple and inexpensive precursors via an energy-efficient process. The primary benefit of these sorbents is that they possess the unique characteristics of DESs and porous materials simultaneously. Moreover, the possibility of tailoring deep eutectic solvents allows designing a specific polymer for a desired analyte, based on its physical and chemical properties. In this work, the deep eutectic solvent of tetrabutylammonium bromide and acrylic acid (1:2 molar ratio) was prepared and then polymerized under solventless condition. The synthesized polymer was characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Brunauer, Emmett and Teller analysis (BET) to evaluate the properties of the sorbent. The poly (TBAB-2AA DES) was applied as a selective sorbent for preconcentration of lead from food and water samples prior to its quantification by flame atomic absorption spectroscopy (FAAS). Variable factors affecting the extraction were optimized, and under the optimum conditions, the calibration plot was linear in the range 5.0-250.0 μg L^-1. The relative standard deviation was (for n = 5) (RSD) < 3%. The limit of detection (LOD) and the enhancement factor were found to be 2.0 μg L^-1 and 50, respectively. Finally, the accuracy of the method was assessed by comparison of the results with those obtained by direct determination of lead using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and spiked real samples. The obtained recoveries were between 92 and 106%. Graphical abstract.

Poly(lauryl methacrylate)-Grafted Amino-Functionalized Zirconium-Terephthalate Metal-Organic Framework: Efficient Adsorbent for Extraction of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons from Water Samples

In this study, a novel porous hybrid material, poly(lauryl methacrylate) polymer-grafted UiO-66-NH₂ (UiO = University of Oslo), was synthesized for efficient extraction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from aqueous samples. The polymer end-tethered covalently to the MOF's surface was synthesized by surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization, revealing a distinct type of morphology. The adsorbent was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, N₂ adsorption-desorption analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. The analyses were carried out by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Parameters including the type and volume of the eluent, the amount of the adsorbent, and adsorption and desorption times were investigated and optimized. Under optimal conditions, the limit of detection, intraday precision, and interday precision were in the range of 3-8 ng L^-1, 1.4-3.1, and 4.1-6.5%, respectively. The procedure was used for analysis of PAHs from natural water samples.
