DNA dendrimer-templated copper nanoparticles: self-assembly, aggregation-induced emission enhancement and sensing of lead ions

Copper nanomaterials based on DNA scaffold (DNA-Cu NMs) are becoming a novel fluorescent material, but it is still challenging to obtain highly fluorescent DNA-Cu NMs with excellent stability. In this work, we report a kind of copper nano-assemblies (Cu NASs) with aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) property using DNA dendrimers with sticky end as template. The sticky end of the DNA dendrimers induced the formation of much bigger Cu NASs with average size ranging from 131 to 264 nm, depending on the length of the DNA dendrimer sticky end from 6 bases to 27 bases. Compared with complete complementary DNA dendrimer, nearly 6-fold fluorescence enhancement was achieved using DNA dendrimer with 27 bases sticky end. Moreover, the DNA dendrimer-Cu NASs demonstrated excellent stability in serum and could be rapidly quenched by Pb²⁺ ions. Based on the above property, highly sensitive and selective fluorescent detection of Pb²⁺ ions was possible with a linear range of 2.0-100 nM and a detection limit of 0.75 nM. Due to the sensitive and rapid response to Pb²⁺ as well as excellent stability in complex matrix, the proposed fluorescent Cu NASs demonstrated high potential as an excellent fluorescent probe for Pb²⁺ in complex matrix.

Poly (deep eutectic solvents) as a new class of sustainable sorbents for solid phase extraction: application for preconcentration of Pb (II) from food and water samples

A new class of polymeric sorbents based on deep eutectic solvents (DESs) is introduced. These materials are obtained from simple and inexpensive precursors via an energy-efficient process. The primary benefit of these sorbents is that they possess the unique characteristics of DESs and porous materials simultaneously. Moreover, the possibility of tailoring deep eutectic solvents allows designing a specific polymer for a desired analyte, based on its physical and chemical properties. In this work, the deep eutectic solvent of tetrabutylammonium bromide and acrylic acid (1:2 molar ratio) was prepared and then polymerized under solventless condition. The synthesized polymer was characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Brunauer, Emmett and Teller analysis (BET) to evaluate the properties of the sorbent. The poly (TBAB-2AA DES) was applied as a selective sorbent for preconcentration of lead from food and water samples prior to its quantification by flame atomic absorption spectroscopy (FAAS). Variable factors affecting the extraction were optimized, and under the optimum conditions, the calibration plot was linear in the range 5.0-250.0 μg L^-1. The relative standard deviation was (for n = 5) (RSD) < 3%. The limit of detection (LOD) and the enhancement factor were found to be 2.0 μg L^-1 and 50, respectively. Finally, the accuracy of the method was assessed by comparison of the results with those obtained by direct determination of lead using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and spiked real samples. Colorimetric determination of Pb2+ ions based on surface leaching of Au@Pt nanoparticles as peroxidase mimic

We report the first use of metallic nanozyme as colorimetric probe for Pb²⁺ determination. The method is based on the surface leaching of Au@PtNP nanozyme by Pb²⁺-S₂O₃^2- ions, accompanied by a decreased catalytic activity of the metallic nanozyme. To construct this colorimetric determination, the Pt deposition onto the AuNPs was carefully investigated and other experimental factors including kind of substrate and buffer were optimized. With increasing Pb²⁺ concentration, the catalytic activity of the Au@PtNPs decreased gradually. As a result, the blue color at 650 nm from the oxidation of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine by H₂O₂ faded gradually. A determination limit of 3.0 nM Pb²⁺ with a linear range from 20 to 800 nM was obtained. The assay demonstrated negligible response to common metal ions even at elevated concentrations. This colorimetric method was applied to the determination of Pb²⁺ ions spiked in lake water samples, and good recoveries (96.8-105.2%) were obtained. The above results indicate the potential application of metallic nanozymes in developing robust colorimetric assays. A multi-functional minimally-disruptive portable electrochemical system based on yeast/Co3O4/Au/SPEs for blood lead (II) measurement

A minimally-disruptive portable electrochemical system is constructed by combining a hand-held syringe as reservoir with disposable screen-printed electrodes (SPEs) modified with a simple and efficient yeast/Co₃O₄/Au material for lead determination by a square-wave voltammetry (SWV) method. Not only can it preserve the operation and advantages of the conventional electrochemical procedure, but it also integrates sampling, filtering and analysis to make the determination of lead convenient and effective at higher and lower concentration levels. This is the first report of a microbial biosensor based on active yeast crosslinked to Co₃O₄/Au particles using glutaraldehyde as the crosslinking agent. The determination process is simplified by introducing a fiber filter and takes only 150 s with the developed system, which illustrates its simplicity, speed and detection accuracy. Also, the design shows a wide log-linear dynamic range (LDR) from 10^-8 to 10^-14 g·L^-1, with a limit of detection (LOD) of 3.45 × 10^-15 g·L^-1 (S/N = 3). Additionally, the proposed system was used to determine lead in blood samples, which demonstrated the potential of this biosensor for use in practical applications. Furthermore, this study provides a basis for the development of microscale blood devices for lead measurement.

3D-printed flow system for determination of lead in natural waters

The development of 3D printing in recent years opens up a vast array of possibilities in the field of flow analysis. In the present study, a new 3D-printed flow system has been developed for the selective spectrophotometric determination of lead in natural waters. This system was composed of three 3D-printed units (sample treatment, mixing coil and detection) that might have been assembled without any tubing to form a complete flow system. Lead was determined in a two-step procedure. A preconcentration of lead was first carried out on TrisKem Pb Resin located in a 3D-printed column reservoir closed by a tapped screw. This resin showed a high extraction selectivity for lead over many tested potential interfering metals. In a second step, lead was eluted by ammonium oxalate in presence of 4-(2-pyridylazo)-resorcinol (PAR), and spectrophotometrically detected at 520nm. The optimized flow system has exhibited a linear response from 3 to 120µgL^-1. Detection limit, coefficient of variation and sampling rate were evaluated at 2.7µgL^-1, 5.4% (n=6) and 4 sampleh^-1, respectively. This flow system stands out by its fully 3D design, portability and simplicity for low cost analysis of lead in natural waters.

Determination of cadmium and lead at sub-ppt level in soft drinks: An efficient combination between dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction and graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry

A DLLME method for extraction and preconcentration of Cd and Pb from soft drinks and further determination by GF AAS was developed. Important parameters of DLLME such as the type and volume of dispersive and extraction solvents, concentration of DDTC (complexing agent) and pH were evaluated. Better results were obtained using 500μL of acetone for Cd and 700μL of acetonitrile for Pb as dispersive solvents, 60μL of CCl₄ as extraction solvent for both analytes and 500μL of 1.5% DDTC solution. Accuracy was evaluated by recovery assays and ranged from 91 to 113% for Cd and from 95 to 108% for Pb, with RSD below 10 and 7%, respectively. The LODs were 0.006 and 0.072ngL^-1 for Cd and Pb, respectively. The optimized method was applied for the determination of Cd and Pb in soft drinks with different brands and flavours.

Ultrasound- and microwave-assisted extractions followed by hydride generation inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry for lead determination in geological samples

Followed the current idea of simplified sample pretratmet before analysis we evaluated the procedure for the determination of Pb in calcium-rich materials such as dolomites after ultrasound- or microwave- assisted extraction with diluted acids using hydride generation inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (HG-ICP-OES). Corresponding Pb hydride was generated in the reaction of an acidified sample solution with NaBH4 after pre-oxidation of Pb(II) to Pb(IV) by K3[Fe(CN)6]. Several chemical (acidic media: HCl, HNO3 or CH3COOH, concentration of the reductant as well as type and concentration of oxidazing agents) and physical (reagents flow rates, reaction coil length) parameters affecting the efficiency of plumbane formation were optimized in order to improve the detectability of Pb using HG-ICP-OES. Limitation of the method derived from the matrix effects was pointed out. Employing Pb separation by HG technique allows the significant reduction of interferences caused by sample matrix constituents (mainly Ca and Mg), nevertheless they could not be overcame at all, hence calibration based on the standard addition method was recommended for Pb quantification in dolomites. Under the selected conditions, i.e. 0.3 mol L(-1) HCl, HNO3 or CH3COOH, 1.5% NaBH4 and 3.0% K3[Fe(CN)6] the limits of detection (LODs) between 2.3-5.6 μg L(-1) (3.4-6.8 μg L(-1) considering matrix effects) and the precision below 5% were achieved. The accuracy of the procedure was verified by analysis of certified reference materials (NCS DC70308 (Carbonate Rock) and NIST 14000 (Bone Ash)) and recovery test with satisfactory results of Pb recoveries ranging between 94-108% (CRMs analysis) and 92-114% (standard addition method). The applicability of the proposed method was demonstrated by the determination of Pb in dolomites used by different fertiliser factories.
