A magnetic nanocomposite prepared from electrospun CoFe2O4 nanofibers and graphene oxide as a material for highly sensitive determination of rutin

Development of isoniazid electrochemical sensor using nickel ferrite - nitrogen and sulfur co-doped graphene quantum dot nanocomposite as a new electrode modifier

This work reports the synthesis of nickel ferrite decorated nitrogen and sulfur co-doped graphene quantum dot (NF@N, S:GQD) and its use as an electrode modifier. The developed NF@N, S:GQD modified glassy carbon electrode (NF@N, S:GQD/GCE) was applied to assess isoniazid (INZ) concentration based on its oxidation at the surface of the proposed electrode. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) were used as appropriate electrochemical techniques to study the electrochemical behavior of INZ and determine it. Based on combined evidence from surveys, research, and personal results, it is thought that the combination of nickel ferrite and doped graphene quantum dots can synergistically affect results, leading to increased sensitivity and reduced detection limits. This is probably mainly due to the high electrical conductivity of N, S-GQD structure, the electrocatalytic effect of nickel ferrite, and increased surface area resulting from the nano size of the modifier. The optimum conditions for preparing of the modified electrode and determination of INZ are selected by performing electrochemical experiments. The voltammetric response of the sensor is linear from 0.3 to 40 nM INZ under optimal conditions and the detection limit of the sensor is 0.1 nM. The validity and performance of the prepared sensor were confirmed by determining the amount of INZ in the drug and urine as real samples. The composite of doped nanoparticles and nickel ferrite is an innovative modification material to create electrochemical sensors with high sensitivity and selectivity that can be used in pharmaceutical applications.

Electrochemistry of Flavonoids: A Comprehensive Review

Flavonoids represent a large group of aromatic amino acids that are extensively disseminated in plants. More than six thousand different flavonoids have been isolated and identified. They are important components of the human diet, presenting a broad spectrum of health benefits, including antibacterial, antiviral, antimicrobial, antineoplastic, anti-mutagenic, anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, immunomodulatory, vasodilatory and cardioprotective properties. They are now considered indispensable compounds in the healthcare, food, pharmaceutical, cosmetic and biotechnology industries. All flavonoids are electroactive, and a relationship between their electron-transfer properties and radical-scavenging activity has been highlighted. This review seeks to provide a comprehensive overview concerning the electron-transfer reactions in flavonoids, from the point of view of their in-vitro antioxidant mode of action. Flavonoid redox behavior is related to the oxidation of the phenolic hydroxy groups present in their structures. The fundamental principles concerning the redox behavior of flavonoids will be described, and the phenol moiety oxidation pathways and the effect of substituents and experimental conditions on flavonoid electrochemical behavior will be discussed. The final sections will focus on the electroanalysis of flavonoids in natural products and their identification in highly complex matrixes, such as fruits, vegetables, beverages, food supplements, pharmaceutical compounds and human body fluids, relevant for food quality control, nutrition, and healthcare research.

Fabrication of High-Density Vertical Closed Bipolar Electrode Arrays by Carbon Paste Filling Method for Two-Dimensional Chemical Imaging

In this study, a carbon paste filling method was proposed as a simple strategy for fabricating high-density bipolar electrode (BPE) arrays for bipolar electrochemical microscopy (BEM). High spatiotemporal resolution imaging was achieved using the fabricated BPE array. BEM, which is an emerging microscopic system in recent years, achieves label-free and high spatiotemporal resolution imaging of molecular distributions using high-density BPE arrays and electrochemiluminescence (ECL) signals. We devised a simple method to fabricate a BPE array by filling a porous plate with carbon paste and succeeded in fabricating a high-density BPE array (15 μm pitch). After a detailed observation of the surface of the BPE array using a scanning electron microscope, the basic electrochemical and ECL emission characteristics were evaluated using potassium ferricyanide solution as a sample solution. Moreover, inflow imaging of the sample molecules was conducted to evaluate the imaging ability of the prepared BPE array. In addition, Prussian Blue containing carbon ink was applied to the sample solution side of the BPE array to provide catalytic activity to hydrogen peroxide, and the quantification and inflow imaging of hydrogen peroxide by ECL signals was achieved. This simple fabrication method of the BPE array can accelerate the research and development of BEM. Furthermore, hydrogen peroxide imaging by BEM is an important milestone for achieving bioimaging with high spatiotemporal resolution such as biomolecule imaging using enzymes.

A Comprehensive Review on the Electrochemical Sensing of Flavonoids

Flavonoids are bioactive polyphenolic compounds, widespread in the plant kingdom. Flavonoids possess broad-spectrum pharmacological effects due to their antioxidant, anti-tumor, anti-neoplastic, anti-mutagenic, anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, immunomodulatory, and vasodilatory properties. Care must be taken, since excessive consumption of flavonoids may have adverse effects. Therefore, proper identification, quantification and quality evaluations of flavonoids in edible samples are necessary. Electroanalytical approaches have gained much interest for the analysis of redox behavior and quantification of different flavonoids. Compared to various conventional methods, electrochemical techniques for the analysis of flavonoids offer advantages of high sensitivity, selectivity, low cost, simplicity, biocompatibility, easy on-site evaluation, high accuracy, reproducibility, wide linearity of detection, and low detection limits. This review article focuses on the developments in electrochemical sensing of different flavonoids with emphasis on electrode modification strategies to boost the electrocatalytic activity and analytical efficiency.

Application of Electrospun Nanofibers for Fabrication of Versatile and Highly Efficient Electrochemical Devices: A Review

Electrochemical devices convert chemical reactions into electrical energy or, vice versa, electricity into a chemical reaction. While batteries, fuel cells, supercapacitors, solar cells, and sensors belong to the galvanic cells based on the first reaction, electrolytic cells are based on the reversed process and used to decompose chemical compounds by electrolysis. Especially fuel cells, using an electrochemical reaction of hydrogen with an oxidizing agent to produce electricity, and electrolytic cells, e.g., used to split water into hydrogen and oxygen, are of high interest in the ongoing search for production and storage of renewable energies. This review sheds light on recent developments in the area of electrospun electrochemical devices, new materials, techniques, and applications. Starting with a brief introduction into electrospinning, recent research dealing with electrolytic cells, batteries, fuel cells, supercapacitors, electrochemical solar cells, and electrochemical sensors is presented. The paper concentrates on the advantages of electrospun nanofiber mats for these applications which are mostly based on their high specific surface area and the possibility to tailor morphology and material properties during the spinning and post-treatment processes. It is shown that several research areas dealing with electrospun parts of electrochemical devices have already reached a broad state-of-the-art, while other research areas have large space for future investigations.

Electrochemical determination of rutin by using NiFe2O4 nanoparticles-loaded reduced graphene oxide

A binary transition metal oxide containing nickel and iron (NiFe2O4) and hybridization of this nanomaterial with reduced graphene oxide (rGO) are synthesized by the hydrothermal method. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy confirm the successful synthesis of these materials. Also, scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) images illustrated the particle morphology with the particle size of 20 nm. The synthesized material is then examined as a sensor on the surface of the glassy carbon electrode to detect a very small amount of rutin. Some electrochemical tests such as cyclic voltammetry, differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), and impedance spectroscopy indicate the remarkable accuracy of this sensor and its operation in a relatively wide range of concentrations of rutin (100 nM-100 µM). The accuracy of the proposed electrochemical sensors is approximately 100 nM in 0.1 M PBS, (pH = 3) which is relatively impressive and can be reported. Also, the stability rate after 100 DPV was about 95 %, which is a considerable and relatively excellent value. Considering the very good results, it seems that the NiFe2O4-rGO can be considered as a new proposal in the development of accurate and inexpensive electrochemical sensors.

Application of magnetic nanomaterials in electroanalytical methods: A review

Magnetic nanomaterials (MNMs) have gained high attention in different fields of studies due to their ferromagnetic/superparamagnetic properties and their low toxicity and high biocompatibility. MNMs contain magnetic elements such as iron and nickel in metallic, bimetallic, metal oxide, and mixed metal oxide. In electroanalytical methods, MNMs have been applied as sorbents for sample preparation before the electrochemical detection (sorbent role), as the electrode modifier (catalytic role), and the integration of the above two roles (as both sorbent and catalytic agent). In this paper, the application of MNMs in electroanalytical methods have been classified based on the main role of the nanomaterial and discussed separately. Furthermore, catalytic activities of MNMs in electroanalytical methods such as redox electrocatalytic, nanozymes catalytic (peroxidase, catalase activity, oxidase activity, superoxide dismutase activity), catalyst gate, and nanocontainer have been discussed.

Surfactant-free solvothermal synthesis of Cu-MOF via protonation-deprotonation approach: A morphological dependent electrocatalytic activity for therapeutic drugs

A copper-1,4-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid-based organic framework (Cu-NDCA MOF) with different morphologies was synthesized by solvothermal synthetic route via a simple protonation-deprotonation approach. The synthesized Cu-NDCA MOFs were analyzed by diverse microscopic and spectral techniques. The FE-SEM and TEM image results exhibited the flake-like (FL), partial anisotropic (PAT), and anisotropic (AT)-Cu-NDCA MOFs formation obtained at different pH (3.0, 7.0, and 9.0) of the reaction medium. The AT-Cu-NDCA MOF/GC electrode not only increases the electroactive surface area but also boosts the electron transfer rate reaction compared to other modified electrodes (PAT- and FL-Cu-NDCA MOFs/GCEs). Under the optimized conditions, the modified electrode (AT-Cu-NDCA MOF) exhibited a sharp oxidation peak (+ 0.46 V vs. Ag/AgCl) and higher current response for rutin. The electrode provides a wide linear range from 1 × 10^-9 to 50 × 10^-6 M, a low detection limit of 1.21 × 10^-10 M, LOQ of 0.001 μM, and sensitivity of 0.149 μA μM^-1 cm^-2. The AT-Cu-NDCA MOF/GC electrode exhibited good stability (RSD = 3.52 ± 0.02% over 8 days of storage), and excellent reproducibility (RSD = 2.62 ± 0.02% (n = 3)). The modified electrode was applied to the determination of rutin in apple, orange, and lemon samples with good recoveries (99.79-99.91, 99.24-99.69, and 99.53-99.83, respectively). Microstructure of Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 Nanofiber with Metal Nitrates in Electrospinning Precursor

Electrospun NiZn ferrite nanofibers have great potential due to their one-dimensional structure and electrical properties, but they have a low reproducibility resulting from many process confounders, so much research effort is needed to achieve optimized process control. For structure control, the viscosity of the precursor solution is a likely parameter. One solution is to use polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) and metal nitrate to obtain the desired viscosity by increasing the nitrate content, even if the polymer content is decreased. Ni_0.5Zn_0.5Fe₂O₄ ferrite nanofiber was electrospun with various precursor conditions. Fifteen different precursor solutions, with a content of five polymers and three metal nitrates, were prepared, with precursor solutions composed of Fe(NO₃)₂·9H₂O, Ni(NO₃)₂·6H₂O, Zn(NO₃)₂·6H₂O, polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP), and N,N-dimethylmethanamide. The fiber diameter changed from the lowest, of 62.41 nm, to 417.54 nm. This study shows that the average diameter can be controlled using the metal nitrate concentration without a difference in crystal structure when PVP is used. In a 24.0 mmol metal nitrate precursor solution, the process yield was improved to 140% after heat treatment. There was also no significant difference in the crystal structure and morphology. This system reduces the cost of raw materials for electrospinning and increases the process yield of NiZn ferrite nanofibers.
