Theoretical modelling of tripodal CuN3 and CuN4 cuprous complexes interacting with O2, CO or CH3CN

Four-coordinate trispyrazolylboratomanganese and -iron complexes with a pyrazolato co-ligand: syntheses and properties as oxidation catalysts

A series of complexes of the type [(Tp(R1,R2))M(X)] (Tp = trispyrazolylborato) with R(1)/R(2) combinations Me/tBu, Ph/Me, iPr/iPr, Me/Me and for M = Mn or Fe coordinating [Pz(Me,tBu)](-) (Pz = pyrazolato) or Cl(-) as co-ligand X has been synthesised. Although the chloride complexes were very unreactive and stable in air, the pyrazolato series was far more reactive in contact with oxidants like O(2) and tBuOOH. The [(Tp(R1,R2))M(Pz(Me,tBu))] complexes proved to be active pre-catalysts for the oxidation of cyclohexene with tBuOOH, reaching turnover frequencies (TOFs) ranging between moderate and good in comparison to other manganese catalysts. Cyclohexene-3-one and cyclohexene-3-ol were always found to represent the main products, with cyclohexene oxide occasionally formed as a side product. The ratios of the different oxidation products varied with the reaction conditions: in the case of a peroxide/alkene ratio of 4:1, considerably more ketone than alcohol was obtained and cyclohexene oxide formation was almost negligible, whereas a ratio of 1:10 led to a significant increase of the alcohol proportion and to the formation of at least small amounts of the epoxide. Pre-treatment of the dissolved [(Tp(R1,R2))M(Pz(Me,tBu))] pre-catalysts with O(2) led to product distributions and TOFs that were very similar to those found in the absence of O(2), so that it may be argued that tBuOOH and O(2) both lead to the same active species. The results of EPR spectroscopy and ESI-MS suggest that the initial product of the reaction of [(Tp(Me,Me))Mn(Pz(Me,tBu))] with O(2) contains a Mn(III)(O)(2)Mn(IV) core. Prolonged exposure to O(2) leads to a different dinuclear complex containing three O-bridges and resulting in different TOFs/product distributions. Analogous findings were made for other complexes and formation of these overoxidised products may explain the deviation of the catalytic performances if the reactions are carried out in an O(2) atmosphere.

Transmission coefficients for chemical reactions with multiple states: role of quantum decoherence

Transition-state theory (TST) is a widely accepted paradigm for rationalizing the kinetics of chemical reactions involving one potential energy surface (PES). Multiple PES reaction rate constants can also be estimated within semiclassical approaches provided the hopping probability between the quantum states is taken into account when determining the transmission coefficient. In the Marcus theory of electron transfer, this hopping probability was historically calculated with models such as Landau-Zener theory. Although the hopping probability is intimately related to the question of the transition from the fully quantum to the semiclassical description, this issue is not adequately handled in physicochemical models commonly in use. In particular, quantum nuclear effects such as decoherence or dephasing are not present in the rate constant expressions. Retaining the convenient semiclassical picture, we include these effects through the introduction of a phenomenological quantum decoherence function. A simple modification to the usual TST rate constant expression is proposed: in addition to the electronic coupling, a characteristic decoherence time τ(dec) now also appears as a key parameter of the rate constant. This new parameter captures the idea that molecular systems, although intrinsically obeying quantum mechanical laws, behave semiclassically after a finite but nonzero amount of time (τ(dec)). This new degree of freedom allows a fresh look at the underlying physics of chemical reactions involving more than one quantum state. The ability of the proposed formula to describe the main physical lines of the phenomenon is confirmed by comparison with results obtained from density functional theory molecular dynamics simulations for a triplet to singlet transition within a copper dioxygen adduct relevant to the question of dioxygen activation by copper monooxygenases.

Spectroscopic and computational studies of an end-on bound superoxo-Cu(II) complex: geometric and electronic factors that determine the ground state

A variety of techniques including absorption, magnetic circular dichroism (MCD), variable-temperature, variable-field MCD (VTVH-MCD), and resonance Raman (rR) spectroscopies are combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations to elucidate the electronic structure of the end-on (η(1)) bound superoxo-Cu(II) complex [TMG(3)trenCuO(2)](+) (where TMG(3)tren is 1,1,1-tris[2-[N(2)-(1,1,3,3-tetramethylguanidino)]ethyl]amine). The spectral features of [TMG(3)trenCuO(2)](+) are assigned, including the first definitive assignment of a superoxo intraligand transition in a metal-superoxo complex, and a detailed description of end-on superoxo-Cu(II) bonding is developed. The lack of overlap between the two magnetic orbitals of [TMG(3)trenCuO(2)](+) eliminates antiferromagnetic coupling between the copper(II) and the superoxide, while the significant superoxo π*(σ) character of the copper dz(2) orbital leads to its ferromagnetically coupled, triplet, ground state.

Probing the mechanism of O2 activation by a copper(I) biomimetic complex of a C-H hydroxylating copper monooxygenase

In this paper, we report, for the first time, a plausible full reaction pathway for the activation of O(2) by a tetraazamacrocyclic monocopper(I) complex and for the subsequent intramolecular alkylic hydroxylation to yield the alkoxide product. This theoretical insight offers remarkable support to the fundamental hypothesis in the field that a hydroperoxo complex of the type Cu(II)OOH intermediate is the key intermediate in this class of reactions. Overall, we give insight into an intramolecular alkylic C-H bond activation due to the O(2) binding to copper(I) with an end-on eta(1)-O(2) ligation. The loss of a water molecule involves the final substrate oxygenation. The complex we consider is a biomimetic of several systems of biological relevance, such as amine oxidases, peptidylglycine-alpha-hydroxylating monooxygenase, and dopamine-beta monooxygenases.

Long Distance Electron-Transfer Mechanism in Peptidylglycine α-Hydroxylating Monooxygenase: A Perfect Fitting for a Water Bridge

The active sites of copper enzymes have been the subject of many theoretical and experimental investigations from a number of years. Such studies have embraced topics devoted to the modeling of the first coordination sphere at the metallic cations up to the development of biomimetic, or bioinspired, catalytic systems. At least from the theoretical viewpoint, fewer efforts have been dedicated to elucidate how the two copper cations act concertedly in noncoupled dicopper enzymes such as peptidylglycine alpha-hydroxylating monooxygenase (PHM) and dopamine beta-monooxygenase (DbetaM). In these metalloenzymes, an electronic transfer is assumed between the two distant copper cations (11 A). Recent experimental results suggest that this transfer occurs through water molecules, a phenomenon which has been theoretically evidenced to be of high efficiency in the case of cytochrome b5 (Science, 2005, 310, 1311). In the present contribution dedicated to PHM, we overpass the common theoretical approaches dedicated to the electronic and geometrical structures of sites CuM or CuH restricted to their first coordination spheres and aim at directly comparing theoretical results to the experimentally measured activity of the PHM enzyme. To achieve this goal, molecular dynamics simulations were performed on wild-type and various mutants of PHM. More precisely, we provide an estimate of the electron-transfer efficiency between the CuM and CuH sites by means of such molecular dynamics simulations coupled to Marcus theory joined to the Beratan model to approximate the required coupling matrix elements. The theoretical results are compared to the kinetics measurements performed on wild and mutated PHM. The present work, the dynamic aspects of which are essential, accounts for the experimental results issued from mutagenesis. It supports the conclusion that an electronic transfer can occur between two copper(I) sites along a bridge involving a set of hydrogen and chemical bonds. Residue Gln170 is evidenced to be the keystone of this water-mediated pathway.

Mononuclear Cu-O2 complexes: geometries, spectroscopic properties, electronic structures, and reactivity

Using interwoven experimental and theoretical methods, detailed studies of several structurally defined 1:1 Cu-O 2 complexes have provided important fundamental chemical information useful for understanding the nature of intermediates involved in aerobic oxidations in synthetic and enzymatic copper-mediated catalysis. In particular, these studies have shed new light on the factors that influence the mode of O 2 coordination (end-on vs side-on) and the electronic structure, which can vary between Cu(II)-superoxo and Cu(III)-peroxo extremes.

Singlet-triplet gaps in large multireference systems: Spin-flip-driven alternatives for bioinorganic modeling

The proper description of low-spin states of open-shell systems, which are commonly encountered in the field of bioinorganic chemistry, rigorously requires using multireference ab initio methodologies. Such approaches are unfortunately very CPU-time consuming as dynamic correlation effects also have to be taken into account. The broken-symmetry unrestricted (spin-polarized) density functional theory (DFT) technique has been widely employed up to now to bypass that drawback, but despite a number of relative successes in the determination of singlet-triplet gaps, this framework cannot be considered as entirely satisfactory. In this contribution, we investigate some alternative ways relying on the spin-flip time-dependent DFT approach [Y. Shao et al. J. Chem. Phys. 118, 4807 (2003)]. Taking a few well-documented copper-dioxygen adducts as examples, we show that spin-flip (SF)-DFT computed singlet-triplet gaps compare very favorably to either experimental results or large-scale CASMP2 computations. Moreover, it is shown that this approach can be used to optimize geometries at a DFT level including some multireference effects. Finally, a clear-cut added value of the SF-DFT computations is drawn: if pure ab initio data are required, then the electronic excitations revealed by SF-DFT can be considered in designing dramatically reduced zeroth-order variational spaces to be used in subsequent multireference configuration interaction or multireference perturbation treatments.
